Abstract:Herein, the processing of multi-material vitrimers with heterogenous properties along their x-,y- and z-axis is demonstrated using dual-vat digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing. The printer is based on a conventional vat exchange set-up containing two vats and a cleaning station, which are positioned on a linearly moving platform, and are exchanged automatically during the layer-by-layer build-up of the object. Two thiol-acrylate resins are selected bearing ample -OH and ester moieties, which undergo thermo-activated transesterification in the presence of an organic phosphate as catalyst. Based on the functionality of the acrylate monomers, printing of multi-material structures with flexible ( σ = 1.1 MPa, ε = 14.0%) and rigid ( σ = 33.3 MPa, ε = 4.4%) domains is feasible. A good interlayer adhesion between the soft and hard domains is evidenced by uniaxial tensile tests, whilst optical microscopy is used to study the interface. Dynamic mechanical analysis further shows that the stiffness of the photopolymers varies over several orders of magnitude ( E ' 23°C = 209 kPa - 507 MPa). Jacobs working curves of the two different resins reveal comparable printing parameters at higher exposure doses, which do not only facilitate the printing of multiple materials between individual layers (z-heterogeneity) but also within the same layer (x,y-heterogeneity). This is confirmed by the printing of a multi-material gripper as "proof of concept" demonstrator, which contains soft inner teeth and a stiff outer core. Gripping and releasing of objects is shown by exploiting the glass transition-based shape memory properties of the stiff domains. Moreover, due to the dynamic nature of the covalent bonds, damages inserted into the gripper are intrinsically repairable due to a thermo-activated macroscopic reflow. Shape memory experiments further confirmed that the multi-material gripper fully regains its function after the thermal mending process. Thus, the results clearly show that objects with a high degree of functionality can be realized by combining multi-material 3D printing with the chemistry of vitrimers. This is of particular interest for future soft robotic applications and for mimicking biological composite structures.

Abstract:As an energy-efficient additive manufacturing process, vat photopolymerization 3D-printing has become a convenient technology to fabricate functional devices with high resolution and freedom in design. However, due to their permanently crosslinked network structure, photopolymers are not easily reprocessed or repaired. To improve the environmental footprint of 3D-printed objects, herein, we combine the dynamic nature of hydroxyl ester links, undergoing a catalyzed transesterification at elevated temperature, with an acrylate monomer derived from renewable resources. As a sustainable building block, we synthesized an acrylated linseed oil and mixed it with selected thiol crosslinkers. By careful selection of the transesterification catalyst, we obtained dynamic thiol-acrylate resins with a high cure rate and decent storage stability, which enabled the digital light processing (DLP) 3D-printing of objects with a structure size of 550 μm. Owing to their dynamic covalent bonds, the thiol-acrylate networks were able to relax 63% of their initial stress within 22 min at 180 °C and showed enhanced toughness after thermal annealing. We exploited the thermo-activated reflow of the dynamic networks to heal and re-shape the 3D-printed objects. The dynamic thiol-acrylate photopolymers also demonstrated promising healing, shape memory, and re-shaping properties, thus offering great potential for various industrial fields such as soft robotics and electronics.

Abstract:Two new vitrimeric materials have been studied for potential additive manufacturing applications such as 3D-printing. A monomer containing disulfide bonds and β-hydroxyesters was easily synthesized from two low-cost and commercially available reagents. Another disulfide-containing monomer was synthesized for comparison purposes. Materials were prepared through a UV-light radical polymerization of methacrylates. The addition of two reactive diluents such as poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMA) and ethylene glycol phenyl ether methacrylate (EGPMA) was necessary to achieve a suitable viscosity for the curing as well as for their printability. The curing process was controlled by FTIR. Thermomechanical properties were investigated by means of DMTA analysis revealing near-ambient T g values. Stress relaxation tests revealed that both materials were capable to relax the 63% of the initial stress in less than 10 min at 110 °C. The recyclability of the materials was achieved, and the mechanical and thermomechanical properties of the recycled samples were compared to the virgin ones revealing a great recovery of the initial properties. Finally, Digital Light Processing (DLP) technique was used to print complex structures with high resolution highlighting the great potential of these vitrimeric materials in 3D printing.

Abstract:Orthogonal photoreactions provide a unique way to locally and independently control (thermo)mechanical properties and functionality of polymer networks simply by choice of the wavelength. Herein, we synthetized a library of acrylate functional coumarin monomers, which were cured by sequence dependent wavelength orthogonality. In the presence of a long wavelength absorbing photoinitiator, the monomers underwent rapid curing by visible light induced radical chain growth polymerization. Subsequent irradiation with light in the UV-A region selectively initiated the [2+2] photocycloaddition of the coumarin chromophores, which was confirmed by FTIR and UV-Vis experiments. Through a well-targeted design, acrylate-based and thiol-acrylate resin formulations were prepared, whose fast curing rate, low viscosity and prolonged storage stability enabled the one-step fabrication of multi-material structures by digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing. By using a dual-wavelength printer, which operated at two different wavelengths (405 and 365 nm), we printed objects comprising soft (ε = 22%, σ = 7.5 MPa) and stiff (ε = 2%, σ = 8.3 MPa) domains with a single resin vat. Along with tensile properties, the wavelength selective change in the network structure featured a local control of the glass transition temperature (∆Tg = 17 °C) in the 3D printed objects. Soft active devices were fabricated by dual-wavelength DLP 3D printing, with distinct domains having a higher Tg and the local programming of multi shapes was demonstrated. 3D Printing of Strong and Room-temperature Reprocessable Silicone Vitrimers

Abstract:Silicones find use in a myriad of applications from sealants and adhesives to cooking utensils and medical implants. However, state-of-the-art silicone parts fall short in terms of shape complexity and reprocessability. Advances in three-dimensional printing and the discovery of vitrimers have recently led to new opportunities for the shaping and recycling of silicone objects. Here, we report the 3D printing via Direct Ink Writing of silicone vitrimers into complex-shaped parts with high strength and room- temperature reprocessability. The reprocessing properties of the printed objects result from the adaptive nature of the silicone vitrimer, which can deform under stress without losing its network connectivity. Rheological and mechanical experiments reveal that printable inks can be tuned to generate strong parts with high creep resistance and room-temperature reprocessability, two properties that are usually challenging to reconcile in vitrimers. By combining printability, high strength and room-temperature reprocessability, the reported silicone vitrimers represent an attractive sustainable alternative to currently available elastomers in a broad range of established and prospective applications.

Abstract:Additive manufacturing is one of the most promising processing techniques for fabricating customized 3D objects. For the 3D printing of functional and stimuli-triggered devices, interest is steadily growing in processing materials with magnetic properties. Synthesis routes for magneto-responsive soft materials typically involve the dispersion of (nano)particles into a non-magnetic polymer matrix. Above their glass transition temperature, the shape of such composites can be conveniently adjusted by applying an external magnetic field. With their rapid response time, facile controllability, and reversible actuation, magnetically responsive soft materials can be used in the biomedical field (e.g. drug delivery, minimally invasive surgery), soft robotics or in electronic applications. Herein, we combine the magnetic response with thermo-activated healability by introducing magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles into a dynamic photopolymer network, which undergoes thermo-activated bond exchange reactions. The resin is based on a radically curable thiol-acrylate system, whose composition is optimized towards processability via digital light processing 3D printing. A mono-functional methacrylate phosphate is applied as a stabilizer to increase the resins' shelf life by preventing thiol-Michael reactions. Once photocured, the organic phosphate further acts as a transesterification catalyst and activates bond exchange reactions at elevated temperature, which render the magneto-active composites mendable and malleable. The healing performance is demonstrated by recovering magnetic and mechanical properties after the thermally triggered mending of 3D-printed structures. We further demonstrate the magnetically driven movement of 3D-printed samples, which gives rise to the potential use of these materials in healable soft devices activated by external magnetic fields.
Architectured Silicone Vitrimers with Light-Tunable Mechanical and Self-Healing Behavior

Abstract:Architectured materials synergistically harness chemical and microstructural features to create monoliths with antagonistic properties. Although it is a hallmark of biological composites, this material design concept has only recently been applied to synthetic elastomers and vitrimers. Here, we propose a light-based platform to manufacture architectured silicone vitrimers with locally tunable mechanical properties. Vitrimers are created through photocuring of polymer mixtures containing silica particles, silicone prepolymers and thiol crosslinkers. Dioxaborolane groups are incorporated in the silicone prepolymers to form dynamic bonds in the covalent adaptive network. Experiments showed that the mechanical properties and self-healing behavior of the silicone vitrimers are strongly influenced by the illumination conditions used during photo-curing. This dependence is exploited to manufacture architectured silicone vitrimers combining high stretchability and locally programmable mechanical stiffness. The high stretchability, tunable local properties and adaptive nature of these polymers makes them attractive for applications in soft robots, biomedical implants, and wearable devices.

Abstract:Digital light processing (DLP) is a 3D printing technology offering high resolution and speed. Printable materials are usually based on multifunctional monomers, resulting in the formation of thermosets that cannot be reprocessed or recycled. Some efforts have been made in DLP 3D printing of thermoplastic materials. However, these materials exhibit limited and poor mechanical properties. Here, we present a new strategy for DLP 3D printing of thermoplastics using two polymers with contrasting mechanical properties, where stiff and flexible linear polymers are sequentially constructed. The inks consist of two vinyl monomers, which lead to the stiff linear polymer, and α-lipoic acid to form the flexible linear polymer via thermal ring-opening polymerization in a second step. By varying the ratio of stiff and flexible polymers, the mechanical properties can be tuned with Young's modulus ranging from 1.1 GPa to 0.7 MPa, while the strain at break increased from 4% to 574%. Furthermore, these 3D-printed thermoplastics allow for a variety of reprocessability pathways including self-healing, solvent casting, reprinting, and closed-loop recycling of the flexible polymer, contributing to the development of a sustainable materials economy. Last, we demonstrate the potential of the new material in applications ranging from soft robotics to electronics.

Abstract:Vat photopolymerization 3D printing provides new opportunities for the fabrication of tissue scaffolds and medical devices. However, for the manufacturing of biodegradable elastomers, it usually requires the use of organic solvents to dissolve the solid photoinitators and achieve low resin viscosity, making this process environmentally unfriendly and not optimal for biomedical applications. Here, we report solvent-free 3D printing of biodegradable elastomers by digital light processing with well-defined photoinitiator-polymer conjugates. Being in liquid state at room temperature, the macrophotoinitiators enabled high-quality 3D printing in the absence of any organic solvents that are usually used in digital light 3D printing. This allowed the systematic investigation of structure-property relationships of 3D-printed biodegradable elastomers without the interference from reactive diluents. The developed macrophotoinitiators were compatible with various photopolymers and could be applied for solvent-free fabrication of biodegradable shape-memory devices. This work offers new perspectives for the solvent-free additive manufacturing of bioresorbable medical implants and other functional devices.
Photopolymerizable semi-crystalline polymers for thermally reversible, 3D printable cast molds

Abstract:Objectives This study demonstrates the use of photopolymerization to create semi-crystalline linear polymers suitable for thermally reversible materials in dental cast moldings produced from 3D printing. Methods An aromatic diallyl, aliphatic dithiol chain extender, and monofunctional thiol were used in a photoinitiated system. The photopolymerization and crystallization kinetics as a function of chemistry and temperature were investigated using spectroscopy and calorimetry. These insights were used to realize vat photopolymerization-based 3D printing of functional objects that could be remotely melted and thereby removed using induction heating. Results The addition of monothiol was shown to decrease the polymer molecular weight which correspondingly increased the crystallization rate. Photopolymerization kinetics are independent of temperature while crystallization was slowed as the temperature approaches the melting point of the materials. Through inclusion of chromium oxide, semicrystalline materials could be melted through induction heating. These materials were implemented in vat photopolymerization 3D printing to realize high-resolution objects that could be used as releasable dental molds following printing and induction heating. Significance This work demonstrates a proof-of-concept methodology to realize directly printable, thermally reversible semicrystalline materials for potential use as dental molding materials.

Abstract:The present study highlights the synthesis of a photosensitive norbornene monomer containing an o -nitrobenzyl ester ( o -NBE) group, which undergoes controlled bond cleavage upon UV exposure. As the o -NBE chromophores are transparent in the visible light region, photopolymers are readily formed by visible light-induced thiol-ene chemistry using a long-wavelength absorbing photoinitiator. Selective photolysis of the o -NBE moieties is then obtained by irradiation with light in the UV-A spectral region. The sequence-dependent orthogonality of the curing and cleavage reaction are confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy. Owing to their constrained ring system, norbornene moieties are highly reactive in radical-induced thiol-ene reactions, which enables the vat photopolymerization 3D printing of functional structures with reasonable build speed. Once printed, the wettability of the 3D objects' surface was conveniently tuned by UV-induced cleavage of the o -NBE groups (release of free carboxylic acids) and related photo-oxidation of the non-reacted thiol moieties (formation of sulfonic acids). With this approach, we were able to introduce wettability gradients onto 3D-printed objects, which is interesting for microfluidic devices and lab-on-chip technologies.

Abstract:<p>This work reports the preparation and 3D printing of a custom‐made photopolymer based on acrylate‐polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), for the fabrication of complex‐shaped 3D printed microfluidic chips. By selecting and combining the proper materials during the preparation of the resins along with the freedom of design of light‐based 3D printers, 3D microfluidic PDMS‐like chips are obtained with excellent optical features, high chemical stability, and good mechanical properties. Furthermore, taking advantage of unreacted functional groups exposed on the sample's surface after the 3D printing step, the surface properties of the devices are easily and selectively modified during the postcuring step through UV‐induced grafting polymerization techniques, giving an added value to the printed devices in terms of surface treatment compared to conventional methods. The 3D printing of the PDMS‐based resins developed here may potentially transforms the fabrication methodology of PDMS microfluidic devices by decreasing manufacturing costs and time, allowing the production of complex‐shaped and truly 3D microdevices.</p>

Abstract:We developed and constructed a novel digital light processing-based microstereolithography three-dimensional printing system capable of producing high-resolution components made of multiple materials in a fully automated, efficient, layer-by-layer manner. A high-contrast digital micro display with a pixel size of 15 mu m was used to project customized 405 nm images through a borosilicate glass plate coated with optically clear polytetrafluoroethylene to induce polymerization in a variety of acrylate-based photocurable polymeric resins, where each layer contained multiple resin types. The new minimal-waste material exchange mechanism involves an air jet to remove residual liquid resin attached to the substrate after each exposure, which eliminated the need to use cleaning solutions that have been known to damage printed features. Complex, multimaterial microlattice structures were printed about 58% faster than existing studies that used cleaning solutions. Mechanical tests of tensile specimens demonstrated that the printing process formed sufficiently strong bonds between differing materials. The multimaterial capabilities of the new system, demonstrated as proof-of-concept in this article using photocurable polymer varieties, open doors for potential high-resolution high-efficiency multimaterial fabrication of a broad range of microarchitectures with novel functionalities and optimized performance made of ceramic, metallic, and biomaterials that find applications in the fields of metamaterials, bioinspired soft robotics, biodevices, microelectromechanical systems, optics, and microfluidics. System optimization to facilitate such capabilities remains as motives for complementary studies.
Remoldable Thiol–Ene Vitrimers for Photopatterning and Nanoimprint Lithography

Abstract:Here, we introduce photocuring as a tool for the spatiotemporal control of vitrimer network synthesis via a photoinitiated thiol-ene polymerization. A difunctional norbomene monomer was synthesized containing ester linkages and pendant alcohol groups to participate in transesterification bond reshuffling reactions. The transesterification catalyst 1,5,7-triazabicydo [4.4.0]dec-5-ene (TBD) was shown to be highly effective in promoting transesterification in these networks at high temperatures, without interfering with external spatiotemporal, photoinitiated control over the thiol-ene polymerization and associated network formation. A strong Arrhenius dependence of the stress relaxation time with inverse temperature was observed from 14.5 to 175 degrees C, which suggests a relaxation controlled by the transesterification reaction rate, similar to previously studied thermally cured vitrimers. These thiol ene vitrimers are implemented in nanoimprint lithography (NIL) for creating surface features, where imprinting may be performed repeatedly on the same sample due to the reversible nature of the bond exchange reactions. Because the networks are photocurable, hierarchical structures were generated by photopatteming and developing a microscale pattern and then performing NIL on the surface of this pattern.
Microscale manipulation of bond exchange reactions in photocurable vitrimers with a covalently attachable photoacid generator

Abstract:Vitrimers are polymer networks with covalent bonds that undergo reversible exchange reactions and rearrange their topology in response to an external stimulus. The temperature-dependent change in viscoelastic properties is conveniently adjusted by selected catalysts. In these thermo-activated systems, the lack in spatial control can be overcome by using photolatent catalysts. Herein, we advance this concept to locally manipulate bond exchange reactions on a single digit microscale level. For this, we synthetize a linkable non-ionic photoacid generator, which is covalently attached to a thiol-click photopolymer. UV induced deprotection of the photoacid yields a strong immobilized sulfonic acid species, which is able to efficiently catalyze transesterification reactions. Covalent attachment of the formed acid prevents migration/leaching processes and enables a precise tuning of material properties. As proof of concept, positive toned microstructures with a resolution of 5 μm are inscribed in thin films using direct two-photon absorption laser writing and subsequent depolymerization. In addition, the possibility to locally reprogram bulk material properties is demonstrated by performing a post-modification reaction with ethylene glycol and carboxylic acids. The Young's modulus is varied between 3.3 MPa and 11.9 MPa giving rise to the versatility of the newly introduced catalysts for creating light processable and transformable materials.

Abstract:Herein, a family of thiourea containing silicone-based photoresins suitable for creating silicone objects with excellent elasticity was developed for use in conventional digital light processing 3D printers. Rapid manufacturing of silicone products is highly desirable for small-volume manufacturing, especially for the application of customer-specific medical devices. However, because of their intrinsic high viscosity and lack of intermolecular interactions, 3D printing with silicone remains an ongoing challenge as suitable resins are not commercially available. To improve the elasticity of 3D-printed silicones, dynamic noncovalent intermolecular interactions between polymer chains were increased through the introduction of thiourea groups. Furthermore, a molecular design strategy was implemented based on utilizing "oligomeric" and "polymeric" PDMS units to adjust the ratio of thiourea segments. The cured silicone elastomer developed here displayed a maximum elongation of up to 1000% under tensile load and excellent cyclic compression durability. Moreover, this approach allowed for the 3D printing of PDMS-based objects with complex microarchitectures, high resolution, excellent surface finishing, and low cytotoxicity. Abstract:Bottlebrush elastomers have attracted significant attention as a class of super-soft materials with a storage modulus (G′) less than the intrinsic entanglement shear modulus (Ge), but current processing strategies have been limited to molding or extrusion-based 3D printing. Here, the ability to 3D print bottlebrush elastomers via digital light processing (DLP) is demonstrated through the design of novel resin components and building blocks. In particular, mono-telechelic poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) macromonomers with a 1,2-dithiolane end group derived from α-lipoic acid (LA) undergo fast and efficient copolymerization with PEG diacrylates under light (≤405 nm) in the presence of a photoinitiator to generate crosslinked bottlebrush networks containing dynamic disulfide backbones. This allows objects that are both super-soft and solvent-free to be printed with a commercial DLP printer. The resulting materials undergo dynamic disulfide exchange when exposed to ultraviolet light (365 nm) or elevated temperatures, facilitating reprocessing and postfabrication healing. These results establish a simple design strategy for the preparation of DLP resins based on natural building blocks (α-lipoic acid), leading to materials with unique properties that broaden the utility of light-based 3D printing with user-friendly chemistry.
