Abstract:An execution trace is a model of a single system behavior. Execution traces occur everywhere in the system's lifecycle as they can typically be produced by executable models, by prototypes of (sub)systems, and by the system itself during its operation. An execution trace can be visualized and analyzed with various techniques, providing insight into the dynamic behavior, performance, bottlenecks, etc., of the system. In this paper, we present the Trace tool of the Eclipse Trace4cps project for the visualization and analysis of execution traces. A prominent application is the trace-based performance engineering of embedded or cyber-physical systems. Performance is an important system quality, as it can give a competitive advantage. Reasoning about system-level performance in such systems, however, is hard due to its cross-cutting nature. We show how the Trace tool can support this by various examples. Performance engineering is not the only application of the Trace tool, however: it supports system analysis in a wide range of situations.

TRACE: Real-time Compression of Streaming Trajectories in Road Networks

Abstract:The deployment of vehicle location services generates increasingly massive vehicle trajectory data, which incurs high storage and transmission costs. A range of studies target offline compression to reduce the storage cost. However, to enable online services such as real-time traffic monitoring, it is attractive to also reduce transmission costs by being able to compress streaming trajectories in real-time. Hence, we propose a framework called TRACE that enables compression, transmission, and querying of network-constrained streaming trajectories in a fully online fashion. We propose a compact two-stage representation of streaming trajectories: a speed-based representation removes redundant information, and a multiple-references based referential representation exploits subtrajectory similarities. In addition, the online referential representation is extended with reference selection, deletion and rewriting functions that further improve the compression performance. An efficient data transmission scheme is provided for achieving low transmission overhead. Finally, indexing and filtering techniques support efficient real-time range queries over compressed trajectories. Extensive experiments with real-life and synthetic datasets evaluate the different parts of TRACE, offering evidence that it is able to outperform the existing representative methods in terms of both compression ratio and transmission cost.
Adaptive Path Profiling Using Arithmetic Coding

Abstract:Path profiling, which aims to trace a program's execution path, has been widely adopted in various areas such as record and replay, program optimizations, performance diagnosis, and etc. Many path profiling approaches have been proposed in the literature, including B.L. algorithm, and PAP. Unfortunately, both approaches suffer from large tracing overhead for representing long execution paths. In this paper, we propose AdapTracer, a path profiling approach based on arithmetic coding. There are two salient features in Adap-Tracer. First, it is space efficient by adopting a path profiling algorithm based on arithmetic coding. Second, it is adaptive by explicitly considering the execution frequency of each edge. We have implemented AdapTracer to profile Android applications. Our experimental evaluation uses modified JGF benchmarks to show AdapTracer's efficiency. Experimental results show that AdapTracer reduces the trace size by 44% on average and incurs execution overhead by 10% at most compared to PAP.
TRACES: TEE-based Runtime Auditing for Commodity Embedded Systems

Abstract:Control Flow Attestation (CFA) offers a means to detect control flow hijacking attacks on remote devices, enabling verification of their runtime trustworthiness. CFA generates a trace (CFLog) containing the destination of all branching instructions executed. This allows a remote Verifier (Vrf) to inspect the execution control flow on a potentially compromised Prover (Prv) before trusting that a value/action was correctly produced/performed by Prv. However, while CFA can be used to detect runtime compromises, it cannot guarantee the eventual delivery of the execution evidence (CFLog) to Vrf. In turn, a compromised Prv may refuse to send CFLog to Vrf, preventing its analysis to determine the exploit's root cause and appropriate remediation actions. In this work, we propose TRACES: TEE-based Runtime Auditing for Commodity Embedded Systems. TRACES guarantees reliable delivery of periodic runtime reports even when Prv is compromised. This enables secure runtime auditing in addition to best-effort delivery of evidence in CFA. TRACES also supports a guaranteed remediation phase, triggered upon compromise detection to ensure that identified runtime vulnerabilities can be reliably patched. To the best of our knowledge, TRACES is the first system to provide this functionality on commodity devices (i.e., without requiring custom hardware modifications). To that end, TRACES leverages support from the ARM TrustZone-M Trusted Execution Environment (TEE). To assess practicality, we implement and evaluate a fully functional (open-source) prototype of TRACES atop the commodity ARM Cortex-M33 micro-controller unit.

OpenTracer: A Dynamic Transaction Trace Analyzer for Smart Contract Invariant Generation and Beyond

Abstract:Smart contracts, self-executing programs on the blockchain, facilitate reliable value exchanges without centralized oversight. Despite the recent focus on dynamic analysis of their transaction histories in both industry and academia, no open-source tool currently offers comprehensive tracking of complete transaction information to extract user-desired data such as invariant-related data. This paper introduces OpenTracer, designed to address this gap. OpenTracer guarantees comprehensive tracking of every execution step, providing complete transaction information. OpenTracer has been employed to analyze 350,800 Ethereum transactions, successfully inferring 23 different types of invariant from predefined templates. The tool is fully open-sourced, serving as a valuable resource for developers and researchers aiming to study transaction behaviors or extract and validate new invariants from transaction traces. Abstract:This paper presents a framework that has been developed to support code-level tracing of the algorithm visualization capabilities of the Map-based Educational Tools for Algorithm Learning (METAL) project. METAL provides graph data based on real-world highway systems and tools to visualize that data and algorithms which operate on it. Data is shown plotted on maps and in text, color-coded to indicate the progress of the algorithm. The new code-level tracing framework allows specific algorithms to be implemented as a series of small actions, most of which correspond to lines of code that can be highlighted as they are executed. This allows a student to see how specific lines of code affect the data structures and variables as the algorithm makes progress toward a solution.
Design and Implementation of a Tracer Driver: Easy and Efficient Dynamic Analyses of Constraint Logic Programs

Abstract:Tracers provide users with useful information about program executions. In this article, we propose a ``tracer driver''. From a single tracer, it provides a powerful front-end enabling multiple dynamic analysis tools to be easily implemented, while limiting the overhead of the trace generation. The relevant execution events are specified by flexible event patterns and a large variety of trace data can be given either systematically or ``on demand''. The proposed tracer driver has been designed in the context of constraint logic programming; experiments have been made within GNU-Prolog. Execution views provided by existing tools have been easily emulated with a negligible overhead. Experimental measures show that the flexibility and power of the described architecture lead to good performance. The tracer driver overhead is inversely proportional to the average time between two traced events. Whereas the principles of the tracer driver are independent of the traced programming language, it is best suited for high-level languages, such as constraint logic programming, where each traced execution event encompasses numerous low-level execution steps. Furthermore, constraint logic programming is especially hard to debug. The current environments do not provide all the useful dynamic analysis tools. They can significantly benefit from our tracer driver which enables dynamic analyses to be integrated at a very low cost.

ATOS: Adaptive Program Tracing with Online Control Flow Graph Support

Abstract:Program tracing solutions (i.e., tracers) can faithfully record runtime information about a program's execution and enable flexible and powerful offline analysis. Therefore, they have become fundamental techniques extensively utilized in software analysis applications. However, few tracers have paid attention to the size of traces and corresponding overheads introduced to offline analysis, as well as the Control Flow Graph (CFG) support. This paper presents ATOS, an efficient tracing solution, to address these issues. It adaptively adjusts the granularity of tracing while conservatively preserving the essential execution information. We implement a prototype of ATOS and evaluate it on several benchmarks. The results show that ATOS can greatly reduce the size of a trace and accelerate offline analysis, while preserving the execution states and supporting existing applications seamlessly. For example, using ATOS, the trace produced by the application CryptoHunt is reduced by 46 times, while the analysis time is reduced by 34 times.

Abstract:Digital forensic practitioners will encounter digital traces during their examinations which they must take steps to understand. This may involve trying to attribute an ' activity ' to a trace (what created it) or determine where it came from (its ' source ') – Trace-to-Activity/Source interpretation. Alternatively, they may need to determine if an activity has taken place on a system by identifying traces denoting it – Activity-to-Trace interpretation. In both instances, practitioners may need to conduct tests and/or identify research which will help them understand a trace, and compare any results of their testing/research to the traces in their casework. This work describes both the Trace-to-Activity/Source and Activity-to-Trace interpretive journeys, as well as the steps contained in both. In addition, six 'trace comparison criteria' are proposed and discussed to help those carrying out a trace comparison, notably: 'trace location', 'trace structure', 'trace examination method', 'trace metadata', 'trace content', and 'trace context'.

Automatic Traceability Maintenance via Machine Learning Classification

Abstract:Previous studies have shown that software traceability, the ability to link together related artifacts from different sources within a project (e.g., source code, use cases, documentation, etc.), improves project outcomes by assisting developers and other stakeholders with common tasks such as impact analysis, concept location, etc. Establishing traceability links in a software system is an important and costly task, but only half the struggle. As the project undergoes maintenance and evolution, new artifacts are added and existing ones are changed, resulting in outdated traceability information. Therefore, specific steps need to be taken to make sure that traceability links are maintained in tandem with the rest of the project. In this paper we address this problem and propose a novel approach called TRAIL for maintaining traceability information in a system. The novelty of TRAIL stands in the fact that it leverages previously captured knowledge about project traceability to train a machine learning classifier which can then be used to derive new traceability links and update existing ones. We evaluated TRAIL on 11 commonly used traceability datasets from six software systems and compared it to seven popular information Retrieval (IR) techniques including the most common approaches used in previous work. The results indicate that TRAIL outperforms all IR approaches in terms of precision, recall, and F-score.

Abstract:Previous work, mostly published, developed two-shell recursive trading systems. An inner-shell of Canonical Momenta Indicators (CMI) is adaptively fit to incoming market data. A parameterized trading-rule outer-shell uses the global optimization code Adaptive Simulated Annealing (ASA) to fit the trading system to historical data. A simple fitting algorithm, usually not requiring ASA, is used for the inner-shell fit. An additional risk-management middle-shell has been added to create a three-shell recursive optimization/sampling/fitting algorithm. Portfolio-level distributions of copula-transformed multivariate distributions (with constituent markets possessing different marginal distributions in returns space) are generated by Monte Carlo samplings. ASA is used to importance-sample weightings of these markets. The core code, Trading in Risk Dimensions (TRD), processes Training and Testing trading systems on historical data, and consistently interacts with RealTime trading platforms at minute resolutions, but this scale can be modified. This approach transforms constituent probability distributions into a common space where it makes sense to develop correlations to further develop probability distributions and risk/uncertainty analyses of the full portfolio. ASA is used for importance-sampling these distributions and for optimizing system parameters.

Abstract:Software traceability is the process of establishing and maintaining relationships between artifacts in a software system. This process is crucial to many engineering processes, particularly for safety critical projects; however, it is labor-intensive and error-prone. Automated traceability has been a long awaited tool for project managers of these systems, and due to the semantic similarities between linked artifacts, NLP techniques, such as transformer models, may be leveraged to accomplish this task. <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://SAFA.ai" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> is a startup focusing on fine-tuning project-specific models that deliver automated traceability in a near real-time environment. The following paper describes the challenges that characterize commercializing software traceability and highlights possible future directions.

Abstract:Previous work in the area of tracing CLP(FD) programs mainly focuses on providing information about control of execution and domain modification. In this paper, we present a trace structure that provides information about additional important aspects. We incorporate explanations in the trace structure, i.e. reasons for why certain solver actions occur. Furthermore, we come up with a format for describing the execution of the filtering algorithms of global constraints. Some new ideas about the design of the trace are also presented. For example, we have modeled our trace as a nested block structure in order to achieve a hierarchical view. Also, new ways about how to represent and identify different entities such as constraints and domain variables are presented.

Abstract:While backtracking analysis has been successful in assisting the investigation of complex security attacks, it faces a critical dependency explosion problem. To address this problem, security analysts currently need to tune backtracking analysis manually with different case-specific heuristics. However, existing systems fail to fulfill two important system requirements to achieve effective backtracking analysis. First, there need flexible abstractions to express various types of heuristics. Second, the system needs to be responsive in providing updates so that the progress of backtracking analysis can be frequently inspected, which typically involves multiple rounds of manual tuning. In this paper, we propose a novel system, APTrace, to meet both of the above requirements. As we demonstrate in the evaluation, security analysts can effectively express heuristics to reduce more than 99.5% of irrelevant events in the backtracking analysis of real-world attack cases. To improve the responsiveness of backtracking analysis, we present a novel execution-window partitioning algorithm that significantly reduces the waiting time between two consecutive updates (especially, 57 times reduction for the top 1% waiting time).
Tracing Optimization for Performance Modeling and Regression Detection

Abstract:Software performance modeling plays a crucial role in developing and maintaining software systems. A performance model analytically describes the relationship between the performance of a system and its runtime activities. This process typically examines various aspects of a system's runtime behavior, such as the execution frequency of functions or methods, to forecast performance metrics like program execution time. By using performance models, developers can predict expected performance and thereby effectively identify and address unexpected performance regressions when actual performance deviates from the model's predictions. One common and precise method for capturing performance behavior is software tracing, which involves instrumenting the execution of a program, either at the kernel level (e.g., system calls) or application level (e.g., function calls). However, due to the nature of tracing, it can be highly resource-intensive, making it impractical for production environments where resources are limited. In this work, we propose statistical approaches to reduce tracing overhead by identifying and excluding performance-insensitive code regions, particularly application-level functions, from tracing while still building accurate performance models that can capture performance degradations. By selecting an optimal set of functions to be traced, we can construct optimized performance models that achieve an R-2 score of up to 99% and, sometimes, outperform full tracing models (models using non-optimized tracing data), while significantly reducing the tracing overhead by more than 80% in most cases. Our optimized performance models can also capture performance regressions in our studied programs effectively, demonstrating their usefulness in real-world scenarios. Our approach is fully automated, making it ready to be used in production environments with minimal human effort.

Abstract:Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) adopting passive mitigation strategies are currently the most promising technology for the near term deployment of nuclear power generation. Different SMRs designs are currently under development and are, in general, characterized by some common features with the current reactors and by other features typical of their designs. Therefore, though numerous code validation study against natural circulation (NC) have been performed for large scale reactors, further analyses are necessary to characterize the capability of codes against available experimental data representative of SMR phenomenology. Though different scaling methodologies have been developed, considering the complex geometry and phenomena of a NPP, in the design of scaled-down experimental facilities it is not possible to avoid distortions, which should be limited to non-dominant phenomena. Even if dominant phenomena are preserved, due to the missing data at NPP scale, the code accuracy should be tested at different scales. Therefore, in a verification and validation process, the uncertainty related to the code scaling-up capability should be addressed, for example using counter-part tests. Since NC tests at different scales in integral test facilities devoted to SMR are currently not available, a numerical scaling methodology is here proposed. Based on previous activities, having as a reference the NC DOE tests developed in the OSU-MASLWR facility, the USNRC best estimate thermal hydraulic TRACE code has been validated for simulating NC in steady and transient conditions. Since the OSU-MASLWR is volume and height scaled, the target of this paper is to assess the scaling-up capability of the OSU-MASLWR Reactor Pressure Vessel nodalization in the prediction at different scales of NC and other phenomena typical of SMR, having as a base the OSU-MASLWR-002 single phase NC data. This, also, gives some first insights about the TRACE scaling-up capability against single-phase NC in integral type configurations.

Abstract:Vulnerability discovery and exploiting are critical to software security. Emerging intelligent vulnerability discovery solutions usually require a large number of training data. Studying exploits also requires a set of existing exploit samples. As a result, building a dataset for vulnerability and exploit research is necessary. In this paper, we present CBTracer, able to catch real-time I/O traffic of target applications and monitor their runtime executions, to build an evolving dataset for kinds of security analysis, including vulnerability discovery and exploit generation. CBTracer is a lightweight framework designed to be deployed easily in various CTF competitions by different organizers to build a bigger dataset. We used CBTracer to collect data from CGC challenges and deployed it in several real-world CTF challenges, showing that it could efficiently collects security-related data.
TRAC: a tool for data-aware coordination (with an application to smart contracts)

Abstract:We propose TRAC, a tool for the specification and verification of coordinated multiparty distributed systems. Relying on finite-state machines (FSMs) where transition labels look like Hoare triples, \thetool can specify the coordination of the participants of a distributed protocol for instance an execution model akin blockchain smart contracts (SCs). In fact, the transitions of our FSMs yield guards, and assignments over data variables, and with participants binders. The latter allow us to model scenarios with an unbounded number of participants which can vary at run-time. We introduce a notion of well-formedness to rule out meaningless or problematic specifications. This notion is verified with TRAC and demonstrated on several case studies borrowed from the smart contracts domain. Then, we evaluate the performance of TRAC using a set of randomised examples, studying the correlations between the features supported and the time taken to decide well-formedness.

Validating Traces of Distributed Programs Against TLA+ Specifications

Abstract:TLA+ is a formal language for specifying systems, including distributed algorithms, that is supported by powerful verification tools. In this work we present a framework for relating traces of distributed programs to high-level specifications written in TLA+. The problem is reduced to a constrained model checking problem, realized using the TLC model checker. Our framework consists of an API for instrumenting Java programs in order to record traces of executions, of a collection of TLA+ operators that are used for relating those traces to specifications, and of scripts for running the model checker. Crucially, traces only contain updates to specification variables rather than full values, and developers may choose to trace only certain variables. We have applied our approach to several distributed programs, detecting discrepancies between the specifications and the implementations in all cases. We discuss reasons for these discrepancies, best practices for instrumenting programs, and how to interpret the verdict produced by TLC.
