Biomass Conversion and Biorefinery
Abstract:Brewer's spent grains account for 85% of solid waste generated in beer manufacturing, and the incorrect disposal of this material causes severe environmental damage. In most cases, the reuse of this residue is limited to animal feed, although researchers have been exploring other possibilities. Biochar production is one of them, an ecological and low-cost adsorbent material. Most review articles on brewer's spent grains have provided only a general overview of possible applications for this byproduct. Therefore, this paper sought to emphasize the utilization of brewer's spent grains for biochar production and its application to pollutant removal. The thermochemical conversion of biomass, biochar activation methods, and their use in adsorption operations were presented. As for the thermochemical conversion is concerned, pyrolysis and hydrothermal carbonization processes were highlighted, with temperature and residence time identified as critical factors influencing biochar yield and its properties. Subsequently, physical and chemical activation methods were reviewed to enhance the characteristics of the obtained material. Physical activation was considered a lower-cost process, albeit requiring high temperatures. Chemical activation stood out for improving pore development in the biochar structure, thereby increasing its specific surface area. Finally, the review of various adsorption studies using biochar derived from brewer's spent grains demonstrated the effectiveness of this material for pollutant removal. The use of biochar for beverage clarification was also suggested based on observed product characteristics, such as large specific surface area and predominantly mesoporous structure, which are essential for color removal.
