Abstract:In this paper,we consider a mathematical model of cell-to-cell spread of HIV-I with double distribution delays. By using two average time delays as bifurcation parameters,we obtain conditions in which the model undergoes the Hopf bifurcation,conditions in which the positive equilibrium is always unstable,conditions in which the positive equilibrium is always asymptotically stable,and conditions in which stability changes from stable to unstable to stable.
Stability analysis of a novel Delay Differential Equation of HIV Infection of CD4$^+$ T-cells

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate a novel 3-compartment model of HIV infection of CD4$^+$ T-cells with a mass action term by including two versions: one baseline ODE model and one delay-differential equation (DDE) model with a constant discrete time delay. Similar to various endemic models, the dynamics within the ODE model is fully determined by the basic reproduction term $R_0$. If $R_0<1$, the disease-free (zero) equilibrium will be asymptotically stable and the disease gradually dies out. On the other hand, if $R_0>1$, there exists a positive equilibrium that is globally/orbitally asymptotically stable within the interior of a predefined region. To present the incubation time of the virus, a constant delay term $\tau$ is added, forming a DDE model. In this model, this time delay (of the transmission between virus and healthy cells) can destabilize the system, arising periodic solutions through Hopf bifurcation. Finally, numerical simulations are conducted to illustrate and verify the results.

Abstract:Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection involves complex interactions between the virus and the immune system, including latency, viral reservoirs, and variable replication rates. Fractional-order models can more accurately describe these dynamics compared to conventional integer-order models. In this paper, we consider E. Beretta et al.'s marine bacteriophage infection model and transform this framework to formulate an HIV infection model. Our main objective is to observe the complex dynamics of the proposed HIV model through the application of fractional calculus. We examine the dynamics of the fractional-order model, addressing aspects such as non-negativity, boundedness, and the existence and uniqueness of the solution. We conduct a comprehensive mathematical analysis of the model through various steady-states and Hopf-bifurcation analyses. We explore rich dynamics through memory effects by using the fractional order for T-cell populations. Extensive numerical simulations are conducted using the Fractional Forward Euler Method, and the numerical outcomes indicate that the memory effects characterized by significantly influence the system's stability. When the infection rate is exceedingly high, the system exhibits instability; however, reducing the value of stabilizes the system, whereas increasing induces destabilization. We generate a bifurcation diagram, which confirms that the system possesses periodic solutions and demonstrates stability transitions when certain key parameters are altered. Finally, we discuss our numerical findings and elucidate the potential biological implications, thereby concluding our manuscript.

Abstract:In this paper, an in-host HIV infection model with latent reservoir, delayed CTL immune response and immune impairment is investigated. By using suitable Lyapunov functions and LaSalle's invariance principle, it is shown that when time delay is equal to zero, the immunity-inactivated reproduction ratio is a threshold determining the global dynamics of the model. By means of the persistence theory for infinite dimensional systems, it is proven that if the immunity-inactivated reproduction ratio is greater than unity, the model is permanent. Choosing time delay as the bifurcation parameter and analyzing the corresponding characteristic equation of the linearized system, the existence of a Hopf bifurcation at the immunity-activated equilibrium is established. Numerical simulations are carried out to illustrate the theoretical results and reveal the effects of some key parameters on viral dynamics.

Abstract:Considering two kinds of delays accounting, respectively, for (i) a latent period between the time target cells are contacted by the virus particles and the time the virions enter the cells and (ii) a virus production period for new virions to be produced within and released from the infected cells, we develop and analyze a mathematical model for HIV-1 therapy by fighting a virus with another virus. For the different values of the basic reproduction number and the second basic reproduction number, we investigate the stability of the infection-free equilibrium, the single-infection equilibrium and the double-infection equilibrium. We conclude that increasing delays will decrease the values of the basic reproduction number and the second basic reproduction number. Our results have potential applications in HIV-1 therapy. The approach we use here is a combination of analysis of characteristic equations, Fluctuation Lemma and Lyapunov function.

Abstract:This paper explores the dynamics analysis of a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) model with saturated cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) immune response and Beddington–DeAngelis infection rate. There are two time delays in the model to describe the time needed for infection of cell and CTL immune response generation, respectively. We obtain two thresholds and three possible equilibria from the model. By analyzing the corresponding characteristic equations, we study the stabilities of equilibrium and the effect of delays on CTL immune response. The results indicate that when immune delay is present, the steady state of equilibrium is disrupted and leads to a Hopf bifurcation. Finally, we use sensitivity analyses to show the effect of parameters on thresholds and numerical simulations to illustrate the theoretical results.

Abstract:In this paper, a class of virus-to-cell HIV model with intracellular delays, saturated incidence and Logistic growth is proposed to characterize the interaction between two types HIV strains, i.e., wild-type and drug-resistant strains. First, a series of threshold criteria on the locally and globally asymptotic stability of (infection-free, dominant, coexistence) equilibria are discussed based on the basic reproduction number R0 . Furthermore, a detailed Hopf bifurcation analysis is performed on the coexistence equilibrium using two delays as bifurcation parameters. We find that the Hopf bifurcations induced by double-strains are evidently different and more complicated than that of single strain, the former switches from stability (periodic branches) to un-stability (chaos) more frequently and earlier than the latter since double-strains would yield more pairs of imaginary roots in the characteristic equations. Meanwhile, the total viral load of double-strains would be higher than that of single-strain as well. The emergence of drug resistance imposes either negative or positive influences on the survival of wild-type strain, which would further facilitate the transmission of HIV.

Abstract:This study investigates a symmetric fractional-order epidemic model with time delays and non-monotonic incidence rates, considering two viral strains. By confirming the existence, uniqueness, and boundedness of the system's solutions, the research ensures the model's well-posedness, guaranteeing its mathematical soundness and practical relevance. The study calculates and evaluates the equilibrium points and the basic reproduction numbers R01 and R02 to understand the dynamic behavior of the model under different parameter settings. Through the application of the Lyapunov method, the research examines the asymptotic global stability of the system, determining whether it will converge to a particular equilibrium state over time. Furthermore, Hopf bifurcation theory is employed to investigate potential periodic solutions and bifurcation scenarios, highlighting how the system might shift from stability to periodic oscillations under certain conditions. By utilizing the Adams-Bashforth-Moulton numerical simulation method, the theoretical results are validated, reinforcing the conclusions and demonstrating the model's applicability in real-world contexts. It emphasizes the importance of fractional-order models in addressing epidemiological issues related to time delays (τ), individual heterogeneity (m, k), and memory effects (θ), offering greater accuracy compared with traditional integer-order models. In summary, this research provides a theoretical foundation and practical insights, enhancing the understanding and management of epidemic dynamics through fractional-order epidemic models.

Abstract:In this paper, considering full Logistic proliferation of CD4^+ T cells, we study an HIV pathogenesis model with antiretroviral therapy and HIV replication time. We first analyze the existence and stability of the equilibrium, and then investigate the effect of the time delay on the stability of the infected steady state. Sufficient conditions are given to ensure that the infected steady state is asymptotically stable for all delay. Furthermore, we apply the Nyquist criterion to estimate the length of delay for which stability continues to hold, and investigate the existence of Hopf bifurcation by using a delay @t as a bifurcation parameter. Finally, numerical simulations are presented to illustrate the main results.

Abstract:We make a mathematical analysis of an age structured HIV infection model with both virus-to-cell and cell-to-cell transmissions to understand the dynamical behavior of HIV infection in vivo. In the model, we consider the proliferation of uninfected CD[Formula: see text] T cells by a logistic function and the infected CD[Formula: see text] T cells are assumed to have an infection-age structure. Our main results concern the Hopf bifurcation of the model by using the theory of integrated semigroup and the Hopf bifurcation theory for semilinear equations with nondense domain. Bifurcation analysis indicates that there exist some parameter values such that this HIV infection model has a nontrivial periodic solution which bifurcates from the positive equilibrium. The numerical simulations are also carried out.

Abstract:Throughout the last few decades, fractional-order models have been used in many fields of science and engineering, applied mathematics, and biotechnology. Fractional-order differential equations are beneficial for incorporating memory and hereditary properties into systems. Our paper proposes an asymptomatic COVID-19 model with three delay terms [Formula: see text] and fractional-order [Formula: see text]. Multiple constant time delays are included in the model to account for the latency of infection in a vector. We study the necessary and sufficient criteria for stability of steady states and Hopf bifurcations based on the three constant time-delays, [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text]. Hopf bifurcation occurs in the addressed model at the estimated bifurcation points [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text]. The numerical simulations fit to real observations proving the effectiveness of the theoretical results. Fractional-order and time-delays successfully enhance the dynamics and strengthen the stability condition of the asymptomatic COVID-19 model.

Abstract:In this paper, we study an age-structured HIV model with intracellular delay, logistic growth and antiretrowviral therapy. We first rewrite the model as an abstract non-densely defined Cauchy problem and obtain the existence of the unique positive steady state. Then through the linearization arguments we investigate the asymptotic behavior of steady states by determining the distribution of eigenvalues. We obtain successfully the globally asymptotic stability for the null equilibrium and (locally) asymptotic stability for the positive equilibrium respectively. Moreover, we also prove that Hopf bifurcations occur around the positive equilibrium under some conditions. In addition, we address the persistence of the semi-flow by showing the existence of a global attractor. Finally, some numerical examples are provided to illustrate the main results.

Abstract:In this paper, we incorporate the periodic therapy from antiretroviral drugs for HIV into the standard within-host virus model, and study the stability and bifurcation of the system. It is shown that when the basic reproduction number of virus is less than one, there is an infection-free equilibrium which is globally stable. Further, if it is greater than one, the HIV infection is uniformly persistent. Besides, subharmonic bifurcation occurs under suitable conditions, and chaotic attractor may emerge through period doubling routes, which can be used to explain the HIV patients' unpredictable unstable health states, even after a long and hard treatment.

Abstract:Homeostatic proliferation plays an important role in cell proliferation. In this paper, we developed a delayed HIV infection model incorporating two modes of infection along with homeostatic proliferation. We showed the positivity of the solution and the existence of the steady state for the dimensionless model. We derived the conditions for local stability and the occurrence of Hopf bifurcation at the infected steady state. We also established the direction and stability of Hopf bifurcation by using the center manifold theorem and normal form method. Numerical simulations were conducted to demonstrate the analytical results and explore the effect of delays on the virus dynamics. Our findings indicate that homeostatic proliferation or an intracellular time delay can destabilize the infected steady state. However, cell-to-cell transmission alone cannot induce a stability switch in the infected steady state. Furthermore, as the intracellular time delay or the homeostatic proliferation rate increases, the time required for the model to reach an infected steady state also increases.

Abstract:The economic impact of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) goes beyond individual levels and it has a significant influence on communities and nations worldwide. Studying the transmission patterns in HIV dynamics is crucial for understanding the tracking behavior and informing policymakers about the possible control of this viral infection. Various approaches have been adopted to explore how the virus interacts with the immune system. Models involving differential equations with delays have become prevalent across various scientific and technical domains over the past few decades. In this study, we present a novel mathematical model comprising a system of delay differential equations to describe the dynamics of intramural HIV infection. The model characterizes three distinct cell sub-populations and the HIV virus. By incorporating time delay between the viral entry into target cells and the subsequent production of new virions, our model provides a comprehensive understanding of the infection process. Our study focuses on investigating the stability of two crucial equilibrium states the infection-free and endemic equilibriums. To analyze the infection-free equilibrium, we utilize the LaSalle invariance principle. Further, we prove that if reproduction is less than unity, the disease free equilibrium is locally and globally asymptotically stable. To ensure numerical accuracy and preservation of essential properties from the continuous mathematical model, we use a spectral scheme having a higher-order accuracy. This scheme effectively captures the underlying dynamics and enables efficient numerical simulations.

Abstract:This paper investigates bifurcations and stability of an HIV model that incorporates the immune responses. The conditions for the global stability of infection-free equilibrium and infection equilibrium are respectively established by the Lyapunov method and the geometric approach. The backward bifurcation from the infection-free equilibrium is examined by analytical analysis. More interestingly, with the aid of mathematical analysis, we find a new type of bifurcations from an infection equilibrium, where a backward bifurcation curve emerges and can be continued to the place where the basic reproduction number is less than unity. By numerical simulations, we find a variety of dynamical behaviors of the model, which reveal the importance and complexity of immune responses in fighting HIV replication.

Abstract:In this study, we explore a mathematical model of the transmission of HIV/AIDS. The model incorporates a fractal fractional order derivative with a power-law type kernel. We prove the existence and uniqueness of a solution for the model and establish the stability conditions by employing Banach's contraction principle and a generalized α - ψ -Geraghty type contraction. We perform stability analysis based on the Ulam–Hyers concept. To calculate the approximate solution, we utilize Gegenbauer polynomials via the spectral collocation method. The presented model includes two fractal and fractional order derivatives. The influence of the fractional and fractal derivatives on the outbreak of HIV is investigated by utilizing real data from the Cape Verde Islands in 1987–2014.

Abstract:A HIV virus-to-cell dynamical model with distributed delay and Beddington-DeAngelis functional response is proposed in this paper. Using the characteristic equations and analytical means, the principle reproduction number R0 on the local stability of infection-free and chronic-infection equilibria is established. Furthermore, by constructing suitable Lyapunov functionals and using LaSalle invariance principle, we show that if R0 ≤ 1 the infection-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable, while if R0 > 1 the chronic-infection equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable. Numerical simulations are presented to illustrate the theoretical results. Comparing the effects between discrete and distributed delays on the stability of HIV virus-to-cell dynamical models, we can see that they could be same and different even opposite.
