Abstract:Regular physical activity is important for maintaining a good health, but a large percentage of the population does not exercise enough. Exercise games can improve motivation by combining exercise with game play. However, such games do not appeal to everyone and can become rapidly boring. Numerous motivational strategies have been investigated within exergames, but most focus on individual players or competition between players. Many teenagers and young adults spend significant time with social networks. In this research we develop a social exergame and evaluate users’ first impressions of such a game and its effect in intrinsic motivation. First impressions are important because they can shape users’ decisions to try something new, such as a game or exercise activity. We did a user study with 52 participants and using a quantitative and qualitative analysis show that our social exergame motivates users more than an equivalent single player game and that users perceive it as more enjoyable. Our research provides a new avenue to increase physical activity in young adults and to potentially appeal to user segments not interested in traditional exercise games.
