Abstract:Assessing the regional impact of climate change on agriculture, hydrology, and forests is vital for sustainable management. Trustworthy projections of climate change are needed to support these assessments. In this paper, 18 global climate models (GCMs) from the fifth phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) are evaluated for their ability to simulate regional climate change in Zhejiang Province, Southeast China. Simple graphical approaches and three indices are used to evaluate the performance of six key climatic variables during simulations from 1971 to 2000. These variables include maximum and minimum air temperature, precipitation, wind speed, solar radiation, and relative humidity. These variables are of great importance to researchers and decision makers in climate change impact studies and developing adaptation strategies. This study found that most GCMs failed to reproduce the observed spatial patterns, due to insufficient resolution. However, the seasonal variations of the six variables are simulated well by most GCMs. Maximum and minimum air temperatures are simulated well on monthly, seasonal, and yearly scales. Solar radiation is reasonably simulated on monthly, seasonal, and yearly scales. Compared to air temperature and solar radiation, it was found that precipitation, wind speed, and relative humidity can only be simulated well at seasonal and yearly scales. Wind speed was the variable with the poorest simulation results across all GCMs.
A comparative assessment of CMIP5 and CMIP6 in hydrological responses of the Yellow River Basin, China

Abstract:Investigation of the role of multiple general circulation model (GCM) ensembles in obtaining comprehensive knowledge of hydrological responses across the Yellow River Basin (YRB), China, is still of substantial importance. This study evaluates the performance of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) models in simulating the hydrological regime in the YRB and compares the results with those from CMIP 5 (CMIP5). The comparison is performed between 21 GCMs from CMIP6 under three Shared Socioeconomic Pathway scenarios and 18 GCMs from CMIP5 under three Representative Concentration Pathway scenarios. Raw CMIP outputs are first corrected and down-scaled by the Bias Correction and Spatial Disaggregation method, and the bias-corrected GCM outputs are then employed to drive the Soil and Water Assessment Tool hydrological model and project streamflow. After correction and downscaling, areal averages for future changes (relative to 1971-2000) of temperature and precipitation are found larger in CMIP6 than in CMIP5. The emblematic annual mean temperature of CMIP6 increases by 1.64-2.20 and 2.31-5.29 degrees C for the future period of 2026-2055 and 2066-2095, while the counterpart of CMIP5 is 1.92-2.39 and 1.68-4.76 degrees C, respectively. In terms of precipitation, for CMIP6, it increases by 3.45-4.70 and 6.77-15.40%, and for CMIP5 by 2.58-2.96 and 3.83-9.95%. It is further concluded that: (1) future streamflow will probably decrease less under CMIP6 than that under CMIP5 in most cases, and climate changes of this kind will affect regional water supply and security in the YRB; (2) uncertainty in the projected streamflow is dominated by GCMs uncertainty with the contribution rate of >75%; (3) the streamflow is more sensitive to precipitation changes in comparison with temperature changes in the near future. In contrast, streamflow reduction is more attributed to an increase in temperature with a contribution rate of almost >60% than in precipitation in the far future.

Abstract:Precipitation's temporal and spatial patterns under climate change significantly impact global terrestrial ecology and human social activities. Climate models are essential tools for assessing the impacts of climate change and formulating policies to address climate change. The evaluation results of historical climate model simulations can represent the reliability of their future simulations. This study evaluated the simulation capabilities of 41 historical All‐Forcing monthly precipitation simulations and three integrated models over global land in the Coupled Model Comparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6). The results show that the simulation capability of GCMs in CMIP6 is highly variable overland around the world. This variability is manifested in two aspects: the spatial variability of the comprehensive simulation ability of each model in different geographical regions and climatic zones of the world and the significant difference in the simulation ability of different models in each region. These GCMs generally overestimate global monthly precipitation over land, with the exception of southeast Asia and tropical rainforest climate (Af), where all models underestimate monthly precipitation. Some GCMS can perform well regionally but poorly on the global scale. One example shows that EC‐Earth3's best capability at Cwc climatic zone, surpassing the integrated model, but failed to rank in the top 10 in 22 of the 29 climate zones. Our results highlight the need to select appropriate models for integration when conducting climate change studies at global and regional scales as a critical factor in studying climate change predictions.
Evaluation and Hydrological Application of Precipitation Estimates Derived from PERSIANN‐CDR, TRMM 3B42V7, and NCEP‐CFSR over Humid Regions in China

Abstract:Satellite-based and reanalysis quantitative precipitation estimates are attractive for hydrologic prediction or forecasting and reliable water resources management, especially for ungauged regions. This study evaluates three widely used global high-resolution precipitation products [Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information using Artificial Neural Networks-Climate Data Record (PERSIANN-CDR), Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission 3B42 Version 7 (TRMM 3B42V7), and National Centers for Environment Prediction-Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (NCEP-CFSR)] against gauge observations with seven statistical indices over two humid regions in China. Furthermore, the study investigates whether the three precipitation products can be reliably utilized as inputs in Soil and Water Assessment Tool, a semi-distributed hydrological model, to simulate streamflows. Results show that the precipitation estimates derived from TRMM 3B42V7 outperform the other two products with the smallest errors and bias, and highest correlation at monthly scale, which is followed by PERSIANN-CDR and NCEP-CFSR in this rank. However, the superiority of TRMM 3B42V7 in errors, bias, and correlations is not warranted at daily scale. PERSIANN-CDR and 3B42V7 present encouraging potential for streamflow prediction at daily and monthly scale respectively over the two humid regions, whilst the performance of NCEP-CFSR for hydrological applications varies from basin to basin. Simulations forced with 3B42V7 are the best among the three precipitation products in capturing daily measured streamflows, whilst PERSIANN-CDR-driven simulations underestimate high streamflows and high streamflow simulations driven by NCEP-CFSR mostly are overestimated significantly. In terms of extreme events analysis, PERSIANN-CDR often underestimates the extreme precipitation, so do extreme streamflow simulations forced with it. NCEP-CFSR performs just the reverse, compared with PERSIANN-CDR. The performance pattern of TRMM 3B42V7 on extremes is not certain, with coexisting underestimation and overestimation. Abstract:In the context of global climate change, it is important to monitor abnormal changes in extreme precipitation events that lead to frequent floods. This research used precipitation indices to describe variations in extreme precipitation and analyzed the characteristics of extreme precipitation in four climatic (arid, semi-arid, semi-humid and humid) regions across China. The equidistant cumulative distribution function (EDCDF) method was used to downscale and bias-correct daily precipitation in eight Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) general circulation models (GCMs). From 1961 to 2005, the humid region had stronger and longer extreme precipitation compared with the other regions. In the future, the projected extreme precipitation is mainly concentrated in summer, and there will be large areas with substantial changes in maximum consecutive 5-day precipitation (Rx5) and precipitation intensity (SDII). The greatest differences between two scenarios (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5) are in semi-arid and semi-humid areas for summer precipitation anomalies. However, the area of the four regions with an increasing trend of extreme precipitation is larger under the RCP8.5 scenario than that under the RCP4.5 scenario. The increasing trend of extreme precipitation in the future is relatively pronounced, especially in humid areas, implying a potential heightened flood risk in these areas.

Abstract:<p>Precipitation simulation and projection in global climate models (GCMs) play an important role in regional water resource management. Since multiple climate simulations from CMIP6 are already available, we evaluated the precipitation performance over the Yangtze River basin (YRB) from 18 models against observations during 1961–2014, before using the relevant simulations for scientific investigation and policy making. Our results suggest that CMIP6 models generally capture the increasing pattern of precipitation from the source region to the lower reaches of the YRB. However, most models overestimate precipitation (wet bias), by about 28.6% for multi-model ensemble mean (MEM). Spatially, the most significant wet bias could reach 70.1% in the source region. Seasonally, the wet bias is more pronounced in the cold season (56.2% in winter and 45.1% in spring). For precipitation change during 1961–2014, most models reproduce the observed increasing trend in the most northwest YRB, but they display large spatial discrepancies in the other regions. In CMIP6 projections (2015–2099), the precipitation over the YRB keep a consistently increasing trend under both scenarios SSP1-2.6 (14.76 mm/10a) and SSP5-8.5 (22.47 mm/10a). From near term (2015–2060) to long term (2061–2099), this wetting trend slows down under SSP1-2.6, but it accelerates under SSP5-8.5.</p>

Abstract:This study assesses the improvement of the latest Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) over Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) for precipitation simulation. Precipitation simulations under different future climate scenarios are also compared in this work. The results show that: 1) CMIP6 has no overall advantage over CMIP5 in simulating total precipitation (PRCPTOT) and maximum consecutive dry days (CDD). The performance of CMIP6 increases or decreases regionally in PRCPTOT and consecutive dry days. But it is slightly worse than CMIP5 in simulating very wet days (R95pTOT). 2) Comparing the trend test results of CMIP5 and CMIP6 in the future, there are more areas with significant trend based on Mann–Kendall test in CMIP6 compared with that of CMIP5. The differences in PRCPTOT are mainly found in Amazon Basin and Western Africa. The differences between the R95pTOT trends mainly noticeable in South America and Western Africa, and the differences in CDD are mainly reflected in Central Asia, Sahara Desert and central South America. 3) In Southern South America and Western North America, the PRCPTOT changing rate of CMIP6 in the future under various scenarios is always greater than that of CMIP5; in Alaska, Western Africa, Southern Africa, the PRCPTOT changing rate of CMIP6 in the future under various scenarios is always less than that of CMIP5. In Southern South America, the R95pTOT changing rate of CMIP6 in the future under various scenarios is always greater than that of CMIP5; in Alaska, East Asia, North Asia, the R95pTOT changing rate of CMIP6 in the future under various scenarios is always less than that of CMIP5. In almost half of the regions, the CDD changing rate of CMIP6 is less than that of CMIP5 under all scenarios, namely Australia, Amazon Basin, Southern South America, Central America, Western North America, Central North America, Eastern North America, Central Asia, Tibet.

Abstract:The High Resolution Model Intercomparison Project (HighResMIP) experiment within the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6), for the first time, has provided an opportunity to evaluate the performance of climate models over complex topographies. Based on the HighResMIP's historical simulations of atmospheric general circulation models, the performances of global high-resolution models, with a horizontal resolution finer than 50 km, in representing precipitation over Central Asia were evaluated using rain gauge observation datasets. All the models successfully reproduce the large precipitation regions that are located over the mountainous areas and Northern Central Asia. However, nearly all the models overestimate precipitation frequency over Central Asia and large overestimations of precipitation amount and frequency are located over the mountainous areas. Although the HighResMIP multi-model ensemble mean performs better than all individual models at simulating the spatial pattern of precipitation frequency, it is inferior to HadGEM3-GC31-HM and ECMWF-IFS-HR at simulating that of precipitation amount. The simulation performance exhibits remarkable regional differences. Over the Qilian Mountains, the relationship between precipitation and elevation is totally captured by climate models. In contrast, over the Tianshan Mountains, the models fail to simulate the decrease in precipitation frequency after elevation higher than the maximum precipitation elevation. Most models successfully reproduce the annual cycle shape of precipitation amount over the Southern Central Asia, Qilian Mountains and Tianshan Mountains, but fail to reproduce it over the Northern Central Asia. More than half of the high-resolution GCMs have a reduced bias relative to the corresponding low-resolution GCMs. The performances of most high-resolution GCMs in simulating precipitation pattern are well over the Tianshan Mountains.

Abstract:Projecting the climate change impacts on the hydrology and water resources relies on the climate scenarios simulated by general circulation models (GCMs), which requires a systematic and comprehensive assessment of the GCMs’ simulation performances at a regional scale. This study evaluates the performances of precipitation simulation over the Hanjiang River Basin (HRB) by six climate models from the Phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6), the corresponding six previous models from the CMIP5, and their multi-model ensemble (MME) based on the observational data in the CN05.1. To our knowledge, this is the first preliminary study in the HRB. The Taylor diagram (including standard deviation, root-mean-square difference, and correlation coefficient) and Taylor skill score are used for the evaluation of GCMs’ precipitation simulation performances. The spatial pattern and temporal pattern over the HRB simulated by CMIP6 and CMIP5 models are compared by relative biases. The results of the Taylor diagram and skill score show that CMIP6 models don't necessarily perform better than the corresponding previous CMIP5 models in simulating precipitation over the HRB. The MME exhibits superior performance than that of any individual model, and the CMIP6-MME is more skillful than the CMIP5-MME. As to the spatial and temporal variation characteristics, the precipitation biases are both present in CMIP6 and CMIP5 models, and the bias of the CMIP6-MME is lower than that of the CMIP5-MME. The CMIP6 and CMIP5 models overestimate the precipitation from January to June, and simulate larger precipitation biases in the areas and seasons with less precipitation, while lower with more precipitation over the HRB. The findings obtained in this study could provide a scientific reference for the research of future hydrological cycle predictions over the HRB.
Evaluating the Diurnal and Semidiurnal Cycle of Precipitation in CMIP6 Models Using Satellite- and Ground-Based Observations

Abstract:The diurnal and semidiurnal cycle of precipitation simulated from CMIP6 models during 1996-2005 are evaluated globally between 60 degrees S and 60 degrees N as well as at 10 selected locations representing three categories of diurnal cycle of precipitation: 1) afternoon precipitation over land, 2) early morning precipitation over ocean, and 3) nocturnal precipitation over land. Three satellite-based and two ground-based rainfall products are used to evaluate the climate models. Globally, the ensemble mean of CMIP6 models shows a diurnal phase of 3 to 4 h earlier over land and 1 to 2 h earlier over ocean when compared with the latest satellite products. These biases are in line with what were found in previous versions of climate models but reduced compared to the CMIP5 ensemble mean. Analysis at the selected locations complemented with in situ measurements further reinforces these results. Several CMIP6 models have shown a significant improvement in the diurnal cycle of precipitation compared to their CMIP5 counterparts, notably in delaying afternoon precipitation over land. This can be attributed to the use of more sophisticated convective parameterizations. Most models are still unable to capture the nocturnal peak associated with elevated convection and propagating mesoscale convective systems, with a few exceptions that allow convection to be initiated above the boundary layer to capture nocturnal elevated convection. We also quantify an encouraging consistency between the satellite- and ground-based precipitation measurements despite differing spatiotemporal resolutions and sampling periods, which provides confidence in using them to evaluate the diurnal and semidiurnal cycle of precipitation in climate models.
Evaluation of CMIP6 Models and Multi-Model Ensemble for Extreme Precipitation over Arid Central Asia

Abstract:Simulated historical extreme precipitation is evaluated for Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) models using precipitation indices defined by the Expert Team on Climate Change Detection and Indices (ETCCDI). The indices of 33 Global Circulation Models (GCMs) are evaluated against corresponding indices with observations from the Global Climate Center Precipitation Dataset (GPCC V2020) over five sub-regions across Arid Central Asia (ACA), using the Taylor diagram, interannual variability skill score (IVS) and comprehensive rating index (MR). Moreover, we compare four multi-model ensemble approaches: arithmetic average multi-model ensemble (AMME), median multi-model ensemble (MME), pattern performance-based multi-model ensemble (MM-PERF) and independence weighted mean (IWM). The results show that CMIP6 models have a certain ability to simulate the spatial distribution of extreme precipitation in ACA and the best ability to simulate simple daily intensity (SDII), but it is difficult to capture the spatial bias of consecutive wet days (CWD). Almost all models represent different degrees of wet bias in the southern Xinjiang (SX). Most GCMs are generally able to capture extreme precipitation trends, but to reproduce the performance of interannual variability for heavy precipitation days (R10mm), SDII and CWD need to be improved. The four multi-model ensemble methods can reduce the internal system bias and variability within individual models and outperform individual models in capturing the spatial and temporal variability of extreme precipitation. However, significant uncertainties remain in the simulation of extreme precipitation indices in SX and Tianshan Mountain (TM). Comparatively, IWM simulations of extreme precipitation in the ACA and its sub-regions are more reliable. The results of this study can provide a reference for the application of GCMs in ACA and sub-regions and can also reduce the uncertainty and increase the reliability of future climate change projections through the optimal multi-model ensemble method.

Abstract:Based on 20 models from phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6), this article explored possible reasons for differences in simulation biases and projected changes in precipitation in northern China among the all-model ensemble (AMME), "highest-ranked" model ensemble (BMME), and "lowest-ranked" model ensemble (WMME), from the perspective of atmospheric circulations and moisture budgets. The results show that the BMME and AMME reproduce the East Asian winter circulations better than the WMME. Compared with the AMME and WMME, the BMME reduces the overestimation of evaporation, thereby improving the simulation of winter precipitation. The three ensemble simulated biases for the East Asian summer circulations are generally similar, characterized by a stronger zonal pressure gradient between the mid-latitudes of the North Pacific and East Asia and a northward displacement of the East Asian westerly jet. However, the simulated vertical moisture advection is improved in the BMME, contributing to the slightly higher performance of the BMME than the AMME and WMME on summer precipitation in North and Northeast China. Compared to the AMME and WMME, the BMME projects larger increases in precipitation in northern China during both seasons by the end of the 21st century under the Shared Socioeconomic Pathway 5–8.5 (SSP5-8.5). One of the reasons is that the increase in evaporation projected by the BMME is larger. The projection of a greater dynamic contribution by the BMME also plays a role. In addition, larger changes in the nonlinear components in the BMME projection contribute to a larger increase in winter precipitation in northern China.

Assessment of GCMs simulation performance for precipitation and temperature from CMIP5 to CMIP6 over the Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:General circulation models (GCMs) are indispensable for climate change adaptive study over the Tibetan Plateau (TP), which is the potential trigger and amplifier in global climate fluctuations. With the release of Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6), twenty‐four GCMs respectively from CMIP5 and CMIP6 were comparatively evaluated for precipitation and air temperature simulations based on the China Meteorological Forcing Dataset (CMFD). Rank score results showed that CMIP6 models generally performed better than CMIP5 for precipitation and surface air temperature over the TP. According to multi‐model ensembles (MMEs) of the optimal GCMs for each climate variable, the overestimation of precipitation was both present in CMIP5 and CMIP6, but the results of CMIP6 MMEs were relatively lower in the midwest and northern edge of the TP. Furthermore, CMIP6 offered a better performance of precipitation in summer and autumn. For temperature, CMIP6 MMEs were able to reduce the relatively large cold bias that appeared in CMIP5 MMEs in northwest areas to about 1°C, and had a smaller bias in spring and winter. Moreover, the investigation into the simulation effects of precipitation at different elevation zones demonstrated that the improved ability of CMIP6 MMEs to reduce bias was mainly concentrated in the elevation zones of 2000–3,000 m and over 5,000 m, where the precipitation bias was more than 200%. Additionally, CMIP6 MMEs of temperature were able to reduce the bias to less than 2°C in each elevation zone, with the minimum bias of −0.22°C distributed in the region with altitudes from 3,000 m to 4,000 m, while the biases of CMIP5 MMEs in the region of 4,000–5,000 m and over 5,000 m were smaller than those of CMIP6 MMEs. Findings obtained in this study could provide a scientific reference for related climate change research over the TP. GCMs of CMIP6 perform better than those of CMIP5 for precipitation and temperature over the Tibetan Plateau. Multi‐model ensembles (MMEs) of CMIP6 effectively reduce the overestimation of precipitation from CMIP5 MMEs by 40 mm at the annual scale. Improved ability of CMIP6 MMEs shows a significant elevation dependency, especially in elevation zones of 2000–3,000 m and over 5,000 m for precipitation.

Climate Change Projections over China Using Regional Climate Models Forced by Two CMIP5 Global Models. Part I: Evaluation of Historical Simulations

Abstract:ABSTRACTForced by two Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5 (CMIP5) global models, EC‐EARTH and IPSL‐CM5A, both regional climate models (RCMs) of Regional Climate Model system version 4 (RegCM4) and Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) are used to perform regional climate simulations over China for 1980–2000. In general, the simulations in Institute Pierre Simon Laplace‐Climate Model version 5A (IPSL‐CM5A) are improved by the downscaling of many aspects of both precipitation and surface air temperature, with improvements including the significant enhancement of the resolution and presentation of regional processes in the RCMs. However, the improvement over EC‐EARTH is limited. In addition, the added values also depend on the seasons, geophysical locations over the country and the variables presented. For the mean climates, both RCMs are able to exhibit better annual and winter precipitation measurements when downscaling IPSL‐CM5A over most areas. The superiority of the RCMs over IPSL‐CM5A for the surface air temperature is only obtained in summer. Seasonal cycles of both precipitation and surface air temperature are well simulated by all the models. The RCMs succeed in improving the seasonal cycles of precipitation over both GCMs in most sub‐regions, but the seasonal cycles of temperature are only improved over IPSL‐CM5A. In addition, the downscaling demonstrates more consistent probability distribution functions (PDFs) of precipitation with those of the observations in most sub‐regions. For extreme precipitation, the RCMs provide outstanding convective wet days (CWD) with reduced biases and enhanced presentations of spatial patterns. For the other three extreme precipitation indices, the improvement of the RCMs is relatively weak, with superior over the IPSL‐CM5A in several areas. The extreme temperature indices are better modelled by the RCMs, except for the minimum values of the daily minimum temperatures (TNn), with greater added values over IPSL‐CM5A than those over EC‐EARTH. Comparing two RCMs, WRF shows advantages in the downscaling precipitation, while RegCM4 works better for the surface air temperature.
Historical assessment and future projection of extreme precipitation in CMIP6 models: Global and continental

Abstract:CMIP6 models can reproduce the spatial distribution characteristics and temporal evolution trends of global and continental extreme precipitation. Extreme precipitation will significantly increase in the future, with higher Shared Socioeconomic Pathway (SSP) emission scenarios being associated with more significant increases in extreme precipitation events. In the future, global precipitation will become more uneven: with higher SSP scenarios changes in extreme precipitation become more pronounced. In this study, the new gridded daily precipitation dataset REGEN (Rainfall Estimates on a Gridded Network) was used to verify the performance of 23 global climate models participating in the 6th phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) in terms of extreme precipitation over global and continents during 1950–2014. Projected changes were also evaluated using CMIP6 multi‐model ensemble (MME) under different Shared Socioeconomic Pathway (SSP) by the end of the 21st century. Although positive biases exist in the climatology of most extreme precipitation indices simulated by the CMIP6 MME compared with observations, most of the CMIP6 models can reproduce the spatial distribution characteristics and temporal evolution trends of global extreme precipitation. The simulation is improved by using the CMIP6 MME, relative to the results from individual models. The projected results showed that in most regions of the world, extreme precipitation will significantly increase in the future, with more significant increase under higher SSPs. By the end of the 21st century, total precipitation of wet days (PRCPTOT), simple daily intensity (SDII), the number of very heavy rain days (R20mm), maximum 1‐day precipitation (Rx1day) and maximum consecutive 5‐day precipitation (Rx5day) over the global will increase by up to 50%, 20%, 70%, 50% and 50%, respectively, under the SSP5‐8.5 scenario. Nevertheless, marked uncertainties exist in the projection of extreme precipitation in South America and in the global for consecutive dry days (CDD) index. Noteworthy, average PRCPTOT, Rx1day and Rx5day over Asia, Europe and North America, as well as of the whole world, have significantly increased where the CDD index is also higher, shown by projected results. In summary, global extreme precipitation will increase in the future, and precipitation will become more uneven in space and time. Moreover, as the SSP scenario becomes higher, the uneven distribution of precipitation will become more pronounced.

Abstract:Based on four reanalyses or gridded data sets (ERA5, 20CR, APHRODITE and REGEN), we provide an overview of 23 Historical and 7 HighResMIP experiments’ performance from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) (for short, 6-Hist, HighRes) in simulating seven extreme precipitation indices over Asia defined by the Expert Team on Climate Change Detection and Indices (ETCCDI). We compare them with 28 Historical experiments in CMIP5 (5-Hist). CMIP5 and CMIP6 models are generally able to reproduce extreme precipitation’s spatial distribution and their trend patterns in comparison to the benchmark data set (APHRODITE). The overall performance of individual model is summarized by a “portrait” diagram based on four statistics for each index. We divide all 58 models into three groups (A, the top 20%; B, the median 60% and C group, the last 20%) according to MR rankings (the comprehensive ranking measure). Based on the “portrait” diagram and MR rankings, models that perform relatively well for all seven extreme precipitation indices include HadCM3, HadGEM2-AO, HadGEM2-CC and HadGEM2-ES from 5-Hist, EC-Earth3, EC-Earth3-Veg from 6-Hist and ECMWF-IFS-HR, ECMWF-IFS-LR, ECMWF-IFS-MR from HighRes. The simulated performance of CMIP6 is polarized, for the top four and the last five ranking models are both from CMIP6. Compared with the counterpart models in CMIP6 and CMIP5, the improvement of PCC (pattern correlation coefficient) is more obvious. Furthermore, the dry biases of CMIP6 (both 6-Hist and HighRes) in Southern China and India and the wet biases of CMIP6 in Tibet are reduced compared to CMIP5. This may benefit from the improvement that CMIP6 models can capture the characteristics of meridional moisture flux convergence, and improve the overestimation or underestimation of meridional and zonal specific humidity eddies compared to CMIP5.

Abstract:The capabilities of 23 global climate models (GCMs) from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 were evaluated for six extreme precipitation indices from 1961 to 2010 using interannual variability and Taylor skill scores in the Yellow River Basin and its eight subregions. The temporal variations and spatial distributions of extreme precipitation indices were projected from 2021 to 2050 under the shared socioeconomic pathway scenarios (SSP2–4.5 and SSP5–8.5). The results show that most GCMs perform well in simulating extreme values (1-day maximum precipitation (RX1day) and 5-day maximum precipitation (RX5day)), duration (consecutive dry days), and intensity index (simple daily intensity index (SDII)), and perform poor in simulating the threshold indices (precipitation on very wet days (R95p) and number of heavy precipitation days (R10mm)). The projected changes in extreme precipitation indicate that under the SSP2-4.5 scenario, future extreme precipitation will increase by 15.7% (RX1day), 15.8% (RX5day), 30.3% (R95p), 1d (R10mm), and 6.6% (SDII), respectively, decrease by 2.1d (CDD). The aforementioned changes are further enhanced under the SSP5-8.5 scenario. Extreme precipitation changes widely in Hekou Town to Longmen, in the northeastern part of the region from Longmen to Sanmenxia, below Huayuankou, and in the interflow basin.

Abstract:A reliable projection of precipitation over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) is crucial for climate adaptation activities in this climate‐sensitive region, but existing studies show a large spread in magnitude. Based on Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 models, we investigate the TP summer precipitation projection and understand the sources of uncertainty. The results show that the TP exhibits a profound wetting trend throughout the 21st century, with precipitation increasing by 0.64 ± 0.06 mm day−1 during 2050–2099 under the SSP5–8.5 scenario. The moisture budget analysis indicates that the thermodynamical response to global warming determines the precipitation increase. However, both the thermodynamical and dynamical components contribute to the uncertainty of precipitation projection. The inter‐model spread of the thermodynamic term arises from divergent global mean warming, which is closely related to model climate sensitivity. The uncertainty of the dynamic component is driven by model‐dependent circulation changes induced by different equatorial Pacific warming rates.

Abstract:Selecting appropriate global climate models (GCMs) is crucial for minimizing uncertainty in regional climate projections under future scenarios. Previous studies have predominantly assessed the modeling capability of GCMs for regional precipitation climatology and its long-term patterns based on annual and seasonal precipitation data. Building upon these, we primally evaluated the performance of five GCMs from phase 3b of the Inter-Sectoral Impact Model Intercomparison Project (ISIMIP3b) in simulating precipitation concentration and its variations in the Southwest River Basin (SWRB) of China using the precipitation concentration index (PCI). The results indicate that: (1) The 5 GCMs generally capture the spatial distribution of annual average precipitation in the SWRB but significantly overestimate its magnitude, with a maximum regional average deviation of 207.80 mm. Furthermore, all models tend to overestimate the overall drying trend in the SWRB and show limited capability in simulating interdecadal variations of annual precipitation. (2) While the 5 GCMs reasonably simulate the spatial distribution of annual average PCI in the SWRB, they tend to overestimate its values, with a maximum regional average deviation of 1.54. Additionally, their simulation performance in capturing PCI trends and interdecadal variations is also limited. (3) The 5 GCMs tend to overestimate seasonal precipitation in the SWRB, with the best simulation performance for the distribution of autumn precipitation, followed by spring and summer, and the poorest for winter. Significant differences exist in the simulation performance of the models for seasonal precipitation proportions, which result in discrepancies in the models' representation of PCI. Moreover, the models' poor simulation performance of PCI trends is partly due to their inadequate modeling of trends in seasonal precipitation proportions. The findings will contribute to laying the foundation for meteorological hydrological research and water resource management in the SWRB.

Abstract:The Qilian Mountains (QMs) act as the "water tower" of the Hexi Corridors, playing an important role in the regional ecosystem security and economic development. Therefore, it is of great significance to understand the spatiotemporal characteristics of precipitation in the QMs. This study evaluated the performance of 21 models of phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) from 1959 to 1988 based on ERA5 and in situ datasets. In addition, the precipitation changing trend from 2015 to 2100 was projected according to four shared socioeconomic pathways (SSPs): namely, SSP126, SSP245, SSP370, and SSP585. The results have shown the following: (1) all CMIP6 models could reflect the same precipitation changing trend, based on the observed datasets (−2.01 mm·10a−1), which was slightly lower than that of ERA5 (2.82 mm·10a−1). Multi-mode ensemble averaging (MME) showed that the projected precipitation-change trend of the four scenarios was 5.73, 9.15, 12.23, and 16.14 mm·10a−1, respectively. (2) The MME and ERA5 showed the same precipitation spatial pattern. Also, during the period 1959–1988, the MME in spring, summer, autumn and winter was 130.07, 224.62, 95.96, and 29.07 mm, respectively, and that of ERA5 was 98.57, 280.77, 96.85, and 22.64 mm, respectively. The largest precipitation difference in summer was because of strong convection and variable circulation. (3) From 2015 to 2100, the snow-to-rain ratio was between 0.1 and 1.1, and the snow-to-rain ratio climate tendency rate was concentrated in the range of −10~0.1 mm·10a−1. Both of these passed the significance test (p < 0.05). The projected rainfall of all four SSPs all showed an increasing trend with values of 6.20, 11.31, 5.64, and 20.41 mm·10a−1, respectively. The snowfall of the four SSPs all showed a decreasing trend with values of 0.42, 2.18, 3.34, and 4.17 mm·10a−1, respectively.
