Abstract:Development of advanced energetic materials with promising properties has been intensely-pursued over the past decades. However, traditional strategies for integrating fuel skeleton and oxidizing groups into an organic molecule are very difficult to balance the contradictory relationship between high energy and low sensitivity of energetic materials. In this work, we present a promising approach to develop advanced energetic materials through intermolecular assembly of nitrogen-rich triazine energetic compounds and high-energy oxidants. Under the direction of electrostatic potential and proton affinity calculations, a novel energetic compound 2,4,6-triamino-1,3,5-triazine-1,3-dioxide (TTDO) was rationally designed and synthesized. The easy and effective self-assembly of TTDO with high-energy oxidants afforded a series of novel advanced energetic materials with a good balance between energy and sensitivity. Among these self-assembled energetic materials, TTDOP (a self-assembled energetic material between TTDO and HClO4) showed a very high density (2.047 g cm−3 at 100 K), detonation properties (9284 m s−1 and 41 GPa) as high as that of HMX and better mechanical sensitivity (13 J and 144 N). Moreover, TTDOP exhibited great promise as a substitute for ammonium perchlorate (AP) in solid propellant formulations due to its high combustion and propulsion performances. This work opens a new avenue to develop intermolecular energetic materials with well balanced energy & sensitivity and versatile functionality.

Abstract:Three novel energetic salts (2, 3, and 4) based on 3-amino-5-hydrazinopyrazole were synthesized and were fully characterized. The corresponding thermal and kinetic behaviors were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TG) for the first time. Accurate kinetic models based on the analysis were selected to describe the decomposition by applying an isoconversional methods and nonlinear regressions to data of DSC and the most probable mechanism function of decomposition for salts 2–4 were obtained. Their physicochemical properties, such as densities, heat of formation, detonation performances and mechanical sensitivities acquired from experimental measurements or theoretical calculations were investigated. The results show that the strong hydrogen bond interactions make energetic salts have high densities and good detonation properties while maintaining reasonable mechanical sensitivities. The energetic salts 2–4 show superior detonation performance than TNT or exhibit comparable detonation parameters with RDX while having more insensitive mechanical sensitivities and higher nitrogen contents. These properties provide them as promising energetic materials.

Abstract:1,2,4,5-tetrazine ring is a common structure for the construction of energy-containing compounds, and its high nitrogen content and large conjugation effect give it the advantage of a good balance between energy and mechanical stability as a high-nitrogen energy-containing material. However, most of the reported works about tetrazine energetic materials (EMs) are symmetrically substituted tetrazines due to their easy accessibility. A small number of reports show that asymmetrically substituted tetrazines also have good properties, such as high density and generation of enthalpy and energy. Herein, two asymmetrically substituted tetrazines and their five energetic salts were prepared and fully characterized by IR spectroscopy, NMR spectra, elemental analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The structure of the two compounds was further confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The thermal behaviors and thermodynamic parameters were determined and calculated. In addition, the energetic properties and impact sensitivities of all the compounds were obtained to assess their application potential. The results show that compounds 2 – 4 and 7 – 9 show higher detonation velocities than TNT, and the hydrazinium salt 9 possesses the best detonation properties ( D = 8,232 m s −1 and p = 23.6 GPa). Except for 4 and 3 , all the other compounds are insensitive, which may be applied as insensitive explosives. Noncovalent interaction analysis was further carried out, and the result shows that the strong and high proportion of hydrogen bonds may contribute to the low-impact sensitivity.

Abstract:Design and synthesis of new compounds with both high detonation performances and good safety properties have always been a formidable task in the field of energetic materials. By introducing -ONO2 and -NHNO2 moieties into 1,2,4-oxadiazole- and 1,2,5-oxadiazole-based backbones, a new family of energetic materials, including ammonium 3-nitramino-4-(5-hydroxymethyl-1,2,4-oxadiazol-3-yl)-furazan (4), 3,3′-bis[5-nitroxymethyl-1,2,4-oxadiazol-3-yl]-4,4′-azofuroxan (6), [3-(4-nitroamino-1,2,5-oxadiazol-3-yl)-1,2,4-oxadiazol-5-yl]-methylene nitrate (8), and its energetic ionic salts (10–12), were synthesized and fully characterized. The energetic and physical properties of the materials were investigated through theoretical calculations and experimental determination. The results show that the oxadiazole-based compounds exhibit high enthalpy of formations, good detonation performances, and extraordinary insensitivities. In particular, the hydrazinium salt (11) shows the best energetic properties (11: d = 1.821 g cm−3; P = 35.1 GPa, vD = 8,822 m s−1, IS = 40 J, FS > 360N). The ESP and Hirshfeld surface analysis indicated that a large number of hydrogen bonds as well as π-π stacking interactions within molecules might be the key reason for their low sensitivities and high energy-density levels.

Abstract:Multicyclic compounds containing a 1,2,5-oxadiazole core reveal high density and excellent thermal stability due to their 3,4-substitution arrangement, which facilitates attaining a planar conformation. In this work, a series of new compounds (2―5) that consist of 1,2,5-oxadiazoles bonded to other heterocycles or modifiable groups via stable C-C bonds are synthesized through addition reactions of 3-amino-4-cyanofurazan. Then their 14 energetic derivatives were developed. The synthesis methods and chemistry involved in the production of these novel energetic materials have been explained. The new compounds were investigated through IR, NMR (1H and 13C) spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The thermal decomposition temperatures of the samples were determined using thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry and found to range from 136 °C to 345 °C (onset). Furthermore, the results of impact and friction testing showed that these compounds revealed greater insensitivity compared to FOX-12. Detonation properties, densities, and heats of formation were determined through the EXPLO5 v6.05.04 program, a gas pycnometer, and the Born-Haber energy cycle, respectively. The combination of good detonation properties, enhanced thermal stabilities, and low sensitivities indicate that certain compounds (8, 9, 12, 14, and 16) could be promising contenders for insensitive energetic uses. Interestingly 6-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)-[1,2,5]oxadiazolo[3,4-b]pyridine-5,7-diamine (7) displays fluorescence, making it a promising option for usage as an energetic filler or in the production of energetic materials to facilitate easy detection.

Abstract:In order to broaden the study of energetic cations, a cation 3,5-diamino-4H-pyrazol-4-one oxime (DAPO) with good thermal stability was proposed, and its three salts were synthesized by a simple and efficient method. The structures of the three salts were verified by infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, elemental analysis, and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The thermal stabilities of the three salts were verified by differential scanning calorimetry and thermos-gravimetric analysis. DAPO-based energetic salts are analysed using a variety of theoretical techniques, such as 2D fingerprint, Hirshfeld surface, and non-covalent interaction. Among them, the energy properties of perchlorate (DAPOP) and picrate (DAPOT) were determined by EXPLO5 program combined with the measured density and enthalpy of formation. These compounds have high density, acceptable detonation performance, good thermal stability, and satisfactory sensitivity. The intermolecular interactions of the four compounds were studied by Hirshfeld surface and non-covalent interactions, indicating that hydrogen bonds and π–π stacking interactions are the reasons for the extracellular properties of perchlorate (DAPOP) and picrate (DAPOT), indicating that DAPO is an optional nitrogen-rich cation for the design and synthesis of novel energetic materials with excellent properties.

Abstract:Two novel nitrogen‐rich salts based on the 5‐(5‐Nitro‐1H‐1,2,4‐triazol‐3‐yl)‐1H‐tetrazole (H2NTT) were synthesized and fully characterized. The good detonation performance and low sensitivity make them for prospective insensitive green energetic materials. The design and synthesis of insensitive energetic materials are a necessary and challenging work. The synthesis of novel nitrogen‐rich salts based on 5‐(5‐Nitro‐1H‐1,2,4‐triazol‐3‐yl)‐1H‐tetrazole (H2NTT) has been presented. Structural characterization of these two salts was accomplished by utilizing NMR, MS, IR spectroscopy, and X‐ray diffraction. The standard heats of formation were calculated, and the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and sensitivity test were carried out. Their detonation performances were estimated by EXPLO 5 program. These newly synthesized salts showed highly positive heat of formation and low sensitivity. It is noteworthy that the diaminoguanidine salt b exhibited good detonation performance superior to traditional explosive TNT (Trinitrotoluene), making it a prospective candidate for insensitive energetic material.

Abstract:Nitrogen-rich energetic salts have attracted considerable interest recently, due to their fascinating thermal stability and energetic performance. In this work, N-methylene-C-bridged nitrogen-rich heterocycle (5-((5-amino-tetrazol-1-yl)methyl)-1,2,4-triazole-3,4-diamine (ATMTDA) (1)) were synthesized and its nitrogen-rich energetic salts ((ATMTDA) 2 [(HATMTDA)(DCNM)] 2 H 2 O (2), (HATMTDA)NO 3 (3), (H 2 ATMTDA)(NO 3 ) 2 (4), (HATMTDA)ClO 4 (5), (HATMTDA)NTO (6), and (H 2 ATMTDA)(PA) 2 (H 2 O) 2 (7)) were prepared. These energetic compounds were fully characterized by elemental analysis, FTIR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The NBO charge of 1 was calculated by density functional theory, to understand which N atoms was more vulnerable to attack by H protons to become cations. And the thermal stability of these compounds was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) with acceptable results ( T dec > 190 °C). All of the studied compounds except for compound 5 (FS=216 N, IS=3 J) exhibited less sensitivities than RDX ((FS=120 N, IS=7.4 J), and compound 1 (8.62 km/s, 25.71 GPa) showed good detonation performance. All of the results illustrated the potential application of the compounds as energetic materials.

Abstract:A novel azole cationic skeleton, MTAT, was synthesized to give the derivation of four new energetic salts with excellent comprehensive properties. Among these, Compound 1 ranked among the top performers in monocyclic azolium‐based CHON energetic salts for various key properties: density (top 20%), thermal decomposition temperature (top 10%), and impact sensitivity (top 8%). A thermally stable and high nitrogen content energetic cation N,N'‐methylene‐bis(3,4,5‐triamino‐1,2,4‐triazolium) (MTAT, N = 69.38%, ΔHf = 1959.07 kJ/mol) has been used as a building block for preparing a new family of energetic salts. Compounds 1 and 4 were characterized by infrared and multinuclear NMR spectra. Structural confirmation of four salts (1–4) was supported by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction. Theoretical calculations were performed to calculate the heats of formation and detonation performance using Gaussian 09 and EXPLO5 v6.05 programs, respectively. The impact and friction sensitivity of COMPOUNDS 1 and 2 were measured using BAM standards. Based on experimental and theoretical results, two energetic salts (1 and 3) featuring the novel cation framework MTAT exhibited favorable densities ranging from 1.751 to 1.809 g cm−3 at 298 K, excellent thermal stability (Td: 250–257 °C), acceptable detonation performance (D: 8001–8097 m s−1, P: 23.3–26.7 GPa), and good impact and friction sensitivity (IS: 18–40 J, FS: 240–360 N).

Synthesis and characterization of thermally stable energetic complexes with 3,5-diaminopyrazolone-4-oxime as a nitrogen-rich ligand

Abstract:Energetic metal organic frameworks (EMOFs) are increasingly developed and have proven to be candidates for novel high energy density materials (HEDM). Here, two energetic metal complexes based on 3,5-diaminopyrazolone-4-oxime (DAPO) ligands were synthesized by simple steps and fully characterized by NMR and IR spectroscopy, X-ray single-crystal diffraction, and DSC-TG. The detonation performance was calculated using the Kamlet–Jacobs formula. The crystal densities of these complexes (C 6 H 14 N 12 O 10 Co ( 2 ) and C 6 H 14 N 12 O 10 Cd ( 3 ) are as high as 1.945 g cm −3 at 163 K and 2.072 g cm −3 at 298 K, respectively. Thermal analysis by the DSC-TG test shows that they all have good thermal stability with the highest decomposition temperatures of 287 °C and 344 °C, respectively. These two as-synthesized complexes exhibit excellent detonation performance; 2 ( D = 8682 m s −1 , P = 34.98 GPa) and 3 ( D = 8383 m s −1 , P = 33.78 GPa) have good detonation velocity and detonation pressure that are superior to those of TNT, which is widely used today. Thus, they show great promise for potential applications as thermally stable energetic materials.

Abstract:Computations by density functional theory (DFT) method were performed on a series of di-s-tetrazine derivatives with different substituents and linkages. The heat of formation (HOF) was predicted by designed isodesmic reaction. The results illustrated that introductions group –N3or –N=N– could augment the HOF extremely. The crystal structures were obtained by molecular mechanics methods with dreiding force field. Detonation performance was evaluated by using the Kamlet-Jacobs based on the calculated density and HOF. It was found that –ONO2, –NF2, –NH–NH– and –N=N– groups were effective to enhance the detonation performance of these derivatives. Seven compounds were screened as the potential candidates for high energy density materials.
Searching for high performance asymmetrically substituted teterazine energetic materials based on 3-hydrazino-6-(1H-1,2,3,4-tetrazol-5-ylimino)-s-tetrazine

Abstract:Tetrazine compounds are promising candidates of high performance energetic materials (EMs). For the purpose of exploring high performance asymmetrically substituted teterazine explosives, 3-hydrazino-6-(1H-1,2,3,4-tetrazol-5-ylimino)-s-tetrazine was selected as the precursor and a series of teterazine EMs were prepared based on three synthetic strategies. All the obtained compounds were fully characterized and the crystal structures of seven compounds were further confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The thermal dynamics and thermal safety parameters, the detonation properties and impact sensitivities were also obtained. The results revealed that compounds 15-17 show excellent energetic properties (detonation velocities > 9000 m·s-1, detonation pressures > 30 GPa) and have impact sensitivities (8-12 J) that comparable or lower than RDX. Compounds 9-13 are insensitive to impact and have detonation velocities range from 8452 to 8775 m·s-1. These compounds can be good candidates of high performance secondary explosives or insensitive EMs.

Novel metal-organic frameworks assembled from the combination of polynitro-pyrazole and 5-nitroamine-1,2,4-oxadiazole: synthesis, structure and thermal properties

Abstract:Energetic metal organic frameworks (EMOFs) is a hot topic in the field of energetic materials research. This paper reports two kinds of EMOFs based on methylene-linked polynitropyrazole and nitroamine 1,2,4-oxadiazole. Their structures were fully characterized by crystallography and their detonation performance and stability performance were explored. The results showed that the crystals of compounds 4 and 5 exhibited a 3D stacking phenomenon due to the action of a large number of hydrogen bonds and coordination bonds inside the crystal. In terms of stability, both 4 and 5 showed good thermal stability (TSADT (4) = 204.4 °C and TSADT (5) = 216.2 °C), but due to the difference in the number of energetic groups (-NO2), the sensitivity of 4 (IS = 6.0 J and FS = 100 N) to mechanical stimuli is significantly lower than that of compound 5 (IS = 1.2 J and FS = 40 N). In terms of energy performance, it is this great advantage in the number of energetic groups that makes compound 5's (Dv = 8.059 km s-1 and P = 30.9 GPa) detonation performance superior to that of 4 (Dv = 7.704 km s-1 and P = 26.9 GPa). This research broadens the horizon for the development of EMOFs based on polynitropyrazole derivatives.
Preparation, crystal structures and thermal decomposition of three energetic manganese compounds and a salt based on imidazole and picrate

Abstract:The multi-ligand coordination compound of [Mn(H2O)6](PA)2·2H2O (1), [Mn(IMI)2(H2O)4](PA)2 (2) and [Mn(IMI)6](PA)2·H2O (3), and a salt of (IMI)(PA)·H2O (4) were synthesized by using imidazole (IMI) and picrate (PA). Furthermore, they were characterized by elemental analysis and FT-IR spectrum. The crystal structures were determined by X-ray single crystal diffraction. The obtained results show the crystals of 1 and 4 belong to orthorhombic, Pccn and Pna21 space groups, and the crystals of 2 and 3 belong to monoclinic, P21/c space groups. The metal Mn(II) cations are six-coordinated and exhibit distorted-octahedral configuration. Under nitrogen atmosphere with a heating rate of 10Kmin−1, the thermal decompositions contain two main exothermic stages in the DSC curves corresponding to TG–DTG curves. The non-isothermal kinetics parameters were calculated by the Kissinger’s method and Ozawa’s method, respectively. The energies of combustion, enthalpies of formation, critical temperatures of thermal explosion, entropies of activation (ΔS≠), enthalpies of activation (ΔH≠), and free energies of activation (ΔG≠) were measured and calculated. In the end, the sensitivity properties were also determined with standard methods.

Abstract:In this paper, four series of benzoheterocycle based energetic materials (EMs) have been designed to plan out a strategy to improve the density and safety of EMs, such as combining the insensitive group with aminobenzene ring and the high energetic nitramine explosives, benzo-heterocycle mother ring, designing multi-nitrogen heterocycles with a conjugated system containing N-N and C-N high energy bonds, and hydrogen bonding. Their optimized structure and detonation properties were first calculated and discussed using DFT methods. After calculation, these designed explosives all showed good detonation from 7352 m/s to 8788 m/s. Among them, the compounds with six nitro groups, 1c, 2c, 3c, and 4c, exhibit better performance and rather poor impact sensitivity. However, we found that the compounds with five nitro groups and one amino group have a limited performance reduction and a rapid stability improvement. These four compounds, 1b, 2b, 3b, and 4b, have good detonation performance and better stability. Moreover, the synthesis routes for these four compounds were also designed. The precursor 4–0 and mononitro product 4–1 were successfully synthesized. Their 1H NMR, single crystal, and elemental analysis were also done to verify the structures.

Abstract:The synthesis of the new energetic material 4-amino-3-hydrazino-5-methyl-1,2,4-triazole, which shows excellent performance and reliable safety, has drawn attention recently. To fully characterize this material, a comprehensive analysis was performed using various techniques, including differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), infrared spectroscopy (IR), elemental analysis, and 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. Additionally, three compounds, 3, 5 and 9, were further characterized using single X-ray diffraction. The X-ray data suggested that extensive hydrogen bonds affect molecular structure by means of intermolecular interactions. In order to evaluate the explosive properties of these synthesized compounds, detonation pressures and velocities were calculated using EXPLO5 (V6.01). These calculations were carried out utilizing experimental data, including density and heat of formation. Among the explosives tested, compounds 7 and 8 exhibited zero oxygen balance and demonstrated exceptional detonation properties. Compound 7 achieved the highest recorded detonation pressure, at 34.2 GPa, while compound 8 displayed the highest detonation velocity, at 8887 m s−1.

Abstract:The N-oxidation of 5-nitroso-2,4,6-triaminopyrimidine leads to the successful synthesis of 5-Nitro-2,4,6 triaminopyrimidine-1,3-Dioxide (NTAPDO) 1 and 5-Nitro-2,4,6-triaminopyrimidine-1-oxide (NTAPMO) 2 by using mild oxidation reactions and the NTAPMO (2) based energetic salts (3-5) were prepared effectively by reacting 2 with the related acids following neutralization reaction. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) techniques were applied to manifest the structures and thermal stability of compounds respectively. The compounds 1-5 exhibited high densities in the range of 1.76 -1.87 gcm−3 and mechanically insensitive towards impact and friction. The heat of formation (HOF) of these compounds was found high positive between the ranges of 207.7 to 768.4 kJmol−1. The energetic salts 3, 4, and 5 demonstrated high detonation performance (velocity and pressure) and high volumes of explosion gases (789.77, 733.85, and 730.61 L•kg−1, respectively). Hence, compounds 1-5 displayed good thermal stability, high positive HOFs, and good detonation performance as well as low sensitivity suggesting their potential to be used as energetic materials in the field of high-performance explosives.

Abstract:A series of 3-trifluoromethyl-6-amine-1,2,4-triazolo[4,3-b][1,2,4,5]tetrazine-based energetic materials were efficiency synthesized and fully characterized with IR, multinuclear NMR, and elemental analyses. All new compound structures were also confirmed via X-ray diffraction. Among them, compound 8 exhibits an excellent density of 1.90 g cm-3 which exceeds that of all currently reported trifluoromethyl-containing fused ring energetic materials. Additionally, it has good thermal stability (Td = 232 oC), excellent sensitivities (IS: > 60 J, FS > 360 N) and good detonation performance (Dv = 7877 m s-1, P = 26.8 GPa) which exceed the corresponding values of all reported trifluoromethyl-containing neutral energetic materials. Further, a detailed study based on X-ray diffraction, electrostatic potential, and intermolecular weak interactions in representative compounds and known compound III demonstrates that halogen bonding C-F···X plays an important role in creating good crystal stacking and reducing localized heating from external stimuli, which lead to insensitive energetic materials. This design method for next-generation energetic materials by incorporating intermolecular halogen bonding could be of future importance.

Abstract:To balance the properties and stability of the energetic materials, the synthesis of the new energetic materials 3-amino-4-(4-amino-5-hydrazine-1,2,4-triazole-3-yl) furazan and its energetic salts were reported which show excellent performance and safety. Also, the azo compound 1,2-bis(4-(5-azido-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl) -furazan-3-yl) was prepared and got two -N3 groups unexpectedly. All the new compounds were fully characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and infrared spectroscopy (IR), elemental analysis (EA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). In addition, the structure of compounds 2, 4, 7 were confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The X-ray date shows that energetic salts have extensive hydrogen bonds which are good to the stability of these energetic salts, and it also shows that azo compound has two conformations. In order to get detonation properties of these synthesized compounds, EXPLO5 was used to calculate. According to the calculated results, all ionic salts are inductive energetic materials with good detonation performances (D= 8064-8698m s−1, P= 25.8-31.8GPa) and azo compound has the detonation speed of 8190 m s−1 and achieved the detonation pressure at 24.9GPa. Additionally, the azo compound was tested through the initiation test which shows that it has good detonation ability, has the chance to be the green metal-free primary explosive.
