Abstract:For the limited areas of building rooftops, installing wind turbines can increase energy production, as compared to paving over the photovoltaic panels, and can serve as a viable means for complementary power generation. However, a concise criterion for estimating the availability of wind energy in the built environment is lacking. In this work, the aerodynamic parameters method was integrated with a moving grid of a semicircle with a radius of 500 m to develop an urban-scale wind energy evaluation model. The wind energy utilisation potential of buildings' rooftops in a given city (in this case, Hangzhou) was estimated. The results show that a certain portion of low-rise buildings has considerable available wind resources. By statistical analysis of the millions of calculated results, two criteria for rooftop's wind resources assessment have been developed. Compared with the buildings in a previously planned region having small spacing and low average height characteristics, the buildings of the newly planned region were spacious, resulting in its suitability for wind energy utilisation proportion being 10.2% higher. Besides, the proportion of residential buildings that are suitable for wind use is higher than that of public buildings and industrial buildings, for the average height difference.

Abstract:The assessment of wind resource potential and feasibility is critical for generating and forecasting power generation, as wellas resource identification. In Ethiopia, the majority of the country lacks a wind atlas, making it difficult to determine the availability of sources. Seven different areas (Debre Berhan, Alem Ketema, Mehal Meda, Eneware, Gundo Meskel, Majete and Shewa Robit) were investigated. For the work data was collected from various sources and analyzed using MATLAB software. The basic sources of data that were obtained nationally were from the NMA, which is the National Metrological Agency found in Addis Ababa, and were obtained centrally from each local delegate’s registered report from a height of 2 meters and 10 meters in each listed districts above. According to the results analysis, the average wind speed at most sites is reasonable and 4 m/s at a height of 10 meters, and some of the case study sites have an average wind speed of less than 3 m/s. The extrapolation prediction method produces more realistic results at 30 and 50 meters; for example, when 10 meter is extrapolated to 30 and 50 meters, the wind power densities are 75.2 w/m2, 300.9 w/m2, and 680.5 w/m2, respectively. Similarly, the average yearly energy density for 10 meter, 30 meter, and 50 meter is 2110.8, 4122.6, and 8219.9 Kwh/m2/year, respectively. As per the international standard for wind power and wind speed classification, Eneware and Mehal Meda are categorized under class 7, whereas Debre Berhan is categorized under class 3, while the remaining sites such as Shewarobit, Gunde Meskel, Alem Ketema, and Majete are classified under class 1 for the majority of the year.

Abstract:Urban wind power is an appealing alternative for electricity supply. Comprehensive urban wind resource assessment is a prerequisite for cost-efficient deployment of wind turbines . Based on observations from multiple instruments, including a Doppler lidar (light detection and ranging) system, a microwave radiometer, and a cup anemometer/wind vane set, this study investigates the temporal (interannual, seasonal, and diurnal) variations of wind resources at various heights in a metropolitan city, Hong Kong. The long-term statistical distributions of wind speed, wind shear coefficient, and air density are analyzed, and their variations with height, wind direction, season, and time of day are thoroughly examined. Moreover, the wind power density and capacity factor of prototype wind turbines are estimated. It is observed that the statistical distributions of wind speed and air density are best represented by the Kappa and Normal-Weibull mixture distributions, respectively. There is a significant diurnal variation of wind shear coefficient, from 0.1 in the daytime to 0.4 at night. Moreover, a moderate potential for wind energy harvesting with wind power density of 110 W/m 2 is found at the height of 120 m. This is the first known study that jointly uses lidar, microwave radiometer, and anemometer/wind vane for urban wind resource assessment. These instruments enable the investigation of the temporal variations of wind shear coefficient, air density, and wind power density at multiple heights, which were rarely examined in urban wind energy studies before.

An On-Site Measurement Coupled CFD Based Approach for Wind Resource Assessment over Complex Terrains.

Abstract:Wind resource assessment, especially for regions with complex terrain, is one of the most essential topics for wind energy development. In this paper, a novel method based on on-site measurement coupled to computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations is proposed to reproduce the spatial variability of wind speed distribution over the region with complex terrain. The on-site measurement data of wind speeds are adopted in the data fusion for wind speed distribution estimation and reproduction, combined with the simulation results of CFD. Next, a case study on wind resource assessment for a wind farm in complex terrain, located in Hebei Province, China was done. One year wind measurements with anemometers on three different sites were performed adopting the proposed approach. A cross-validation of the results of the proposed method against on-site wind speed measurement data indicates a good agreement. The results show that the approach proposed have reproduced a wind resource map with high resolution and the wind speed estimations for one spot within the wind farm are with a root-mean-square error of 0.399 m/s, which is qualified for wind farm planning in complex terrain.

Abstract:This study aims to conduct resource assessments at five offshore locations (L1–L5) in the Gulf of South Suez for possible development of wind farms. For this purpose, the hourly mean wind speed and direction data at 100 m above mean sea level (AMSL) and other meteorological data at near water surface from ERA5 (fifth-generation reanalysis for the global climate weather) is used. Statistical analyses, wind power, energy estimation, plant capacity factor, etc., have been performed using Windographer software. The cost of energy and greenhouse gas emissions are conducted based on international installation cost per kW and emissions factor per kWh from the literature. The data covers 43 years, between 1979 and 2021. The results show that at L1 to L5 locations, the long-term mean wind speed (WS) and wind power density (WPD) values are 8.678 m/s and 533 W/m 2 , 4.371 m/s and 78 W/m 2 , 8.917 m/s and 587 W/m 2 , 7.856 m/s and 406 W/m 2 , 8.072 m/s and 453 W/m 2 , and 7.876 m/s and 406 W/m 2 at 100 m ASL, respectively. Based on the site-specific parameters (WS, WPD, WPC, MWVI, MWSI, AWVI, AWSI, minimum zero power, maximum rated power, PCF, COE, and maximum wind duration), values of 8.917 m/s, 587 W/m 2 , 1.125, 34.92, 0.358, 101.9, 6.26%, 5.76%, 54.04%, 0.007 USD/kWh, and 91%; L2 are identified as the most relevant area for wind farm development among the studied locations. At L2 site, the wind turbine WT2 can deliver annually 21.266 GWh of energy at respective plant capacity factors of 48.55%.

Abstract:This research paper conducts a comprehensive analysis of the available wind energy in Nottingham, UK, identifying the Clifton Campus at Nottingham Trent University as the most suitable location for wind turbine installation. It focuses on comparing eleven wind turbine models, concluding that the QR6 is the most appropriate for further experimental research. Additionally, the study examines various methodologies for calculating Weibull parameters for wind potential assessment, selecting the optimal method based on statistical evaluations like MAPE, RMSE, R2, and Chi‐square analysis. Wind energy being a free source of energy is becoming popular over the past decades and is being studied extensively. Integration of wind turbines is now being expanded to urban and offshore settings in contrast to the conventional wind farms in relatively open areas. The direct installation of wind turbines poses a potential risk, as it may result in financial losses in scenarios characterized by inadequate wind resource availability. Therefore, wind energy availability analysis in such urban environments is a necessity. This research paper presents an in‐depth investigation conducted to predict the exploitable wind energy at four distinct locations within Nottingham, United Kingdom. Subsequently, the most suitable location, Clifton Campus at Nottingham Trent University, is identified where a comprehensive comparative analysis of power generation from eleven different wind turbine models is performed. The findings derived from this analysis suggest that the QR6 wind turbine emerges as the optimal choice for subsequent experimental investigations to be conducted in partnership with Nottingham Trent University. Furthermore, this study explores the selection of an appropriate probability density function for assessing wind potential considering seven different distributions namely, Gamma, Weibull, Rayleigh, Log‐normal, Genextreme, Gumbel, and Normal. Ultimately, the Weibull probability distribution is selected, and various methodologies are employed to estimate its parameters, which are then ranked using statistical assessments.

Abstract:In this study, we proposed integrated tools to evaluate the wind power potential, economic viability, and prioritize 15 proposed sites for the installation of wind farms. Initially, we used modified Weibull distribution model coupled with power law to assess the wind power potential. Secondly, we employed value cost method to estimate per unit cost ($/kWh) of proposed sites. Lastly, we used Fuzzy Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (F-TOPSIS) to rank the best alternatives. The results indicate that Pakistan has enormous wind power potential that cost varies from 0.06 $/kWh to 0.58 $/kWh; thus, sites S12, S13, S14, and S15 are considered as the most economic viable locations for the installation of wind power project, while remaining sites are considered to be less important, due to other complexities. The further analysis using Fuzzy-TOPSIS method reveals that site S13 is the most optimal location followed by S12, S14, and S14 for the development of wind power project. We proposed that government should formulate wind power policy for the implementation of wind power projects in order to meet energy demand of the country.

Abstract:Currently, there is no wind park operating along the Egyptian Mediterranean Coast. Therefore, this study aims to find suitable locations for such projects. Wind data from five coastal meteorological stations were used. These are Marsa Matruh (MM), Ras El-Tin (RE), Abu Qir (AQ), Port Said (PS), and Arish (Ar), in that order from west to east. The wind regime dataset, comprising velocity and direction measurements at a 10-m elevation, was collected from January 2007 to December 2022 (16 years), with a complete record of all data points. The Weibull distribution function, along with its different parameters, was used to characterize wind energy along the Egyptian Mediterranean Coast. The coefficient of determination ( R 2 ), root mean squared error (RMSE), and relative root mean squared error (RRMSE) for the Weibull parameters, along with the relative percentage errors (RPE) for the wind power density were calculated to assess the concordance between outcomes derived from observed data and those predicted by the Weibull function.

Abstract:Wind energy has been seen as a viable alternative to traditional fossil fuels in recent decades. However, only a fraction of wind energy potential is exploited for Pakistan compared to the overall output due to insufficient multi-dimensional analysis. In this study, the energy, exergy, economic, environmental, energoeconomic, exergoeconomic, and enviroeconomic (7E) performance of a 50 MW wind energy system is analyzed for eight locations of Pakistan. The initial wind assessment is conducted based on the meteorological data obtained during a time period of 2016-2018. Analyses show that Sujawal has the maximum average annual speed of 7.3 m/s with an annual power density of 376 W/m2. In comparison, the lowest findings were achieved for Peshawar having an average wind speed of 3.07 m/s with a power density of 42.63 W/m2. From the energy, exergy, and cost assessment, it is concluded that Sujawal, Umerkot, and Sanghar are the most appropriate locations for new wind farms. The payback period in Sujawal with a lifespan of 20 years is estimated to be around 4.66 years (with GHG credit) and 7.08 years (without GHG credit). Furthermore, Sujawal is distinguished among the evaluated sites with the lowest exergoeconomic and energoeconomic parameters and the best enviroeconomic performance. The comprehensive performance assessment of the new potential sites explored in this study would be helpful in expanding the wind energy potential across the country.

Abstract:The evaluation and comparison of reanalysis datasets (NCEP-CFSR and ERA-Interim) against mast measured wind data for Keti-bander port of Pakistan have been performed. In the last decade, wind farms have been developed on the land, but there is still need for the development of offshore wind farms on the 1100 km coast of Pakistan. The wind data measured at the Keti Bandar Port of Pakistan at different heights for the duration of 20 months has been used in this study. The evaluations of satellite datasets against measured data were done based on statistical analysis, monthly mean time series and Weibull probability distribution function. The wind data at 30 m, 60 m and 85 m was extrapolated using the Logarithmic law from 10 m height. At 30 m height both satellite datasets show very good agreement with measured data, the predictions of CFSR data are much better than ERA-Interim. The percentage difference for mean wind speed, wind power density and Weibull parameters at 30 m are less than 5%. Overall NCEP-CFSR gave better results compared to ERA-Interim. These results may be used for the offshore wind resource assessment for Pakistan due to unavailability of offshore wind speed data.

Abstract:Wind energy, as a vital renewable energy source, also plays a significant role in reducing carbon emissions and mitigating climate change. It is therefore of utmost necessity to evaluate ocean wind energy resources for electricity generation and environmental management. Ocean wind distribution around the globe can be obtained from satellite observations to compensate for limited in situ measurements. However, previous studies have largely ignored uncertainties in ocean wind energy resources assessment with multiple satellite data. It is against this background that the current study compares mean wind speeds (MWS) and wind power densities (WPD) retrieved from scatterometers (QuikSCAT, ASCAT) and radiometers (WindSAT) and their different combinations with National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) buoy measurements at heights of 10 m and 100 m (wind turbine hub height) above sea level. Our results show an improvement in the accuracy of wind resources estimation with the use of multiple satellite observations. This has implications for the acquisition of reliable data on ocean wind energy in support of management policies.

Abstract:With population expansion and economic progress in recent years, an upward trend of energy demand is observed not only in Bangladesh but also in many other countries. Renewable energy offers a lot of potential for sustainable growth in the energy sector of Bangladesh. Specially, wind energy is widely considered as one of the world's primary renewable energy sources because of its attractive features. This paper mainly investigates wind energy potential in Bangladesh to calculate the projection for electricity generation using different wind speed distribution models. This study also identifies the most accurate and practical method for estimating Weibull parameters in different regions of Bangladesh. Before installing a wind turbine generation system at a certain location, proper assessment of the wind power potential is crucial. A statistical study of wind speed data is necessary to determine its feasibility. Five-year real wind speed data at 50 m height is collected from fifty locations of Bangladesh with different topographical circumstances. This work has evaluated the results using the wind speed information available from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration meteorological site. A total of six methods are compared for calculating shape parameter (k), scale parameter (c), and k/c ratios. The most favorable annual mean wind speed is found at Sandwip, which is 4.89 m/s. The wind energy and power densities of the locations have been calculated using the Weibull distribution. The annual power density at Sandwip is found to be 88.59 W/m 2 and energy density of 104.92 kWh/m 2 . The overall assessment demonstrates that among the six approaches, the power density method technique functioned best independent of the topographical circumstances. The energy pattern factor method technique exhibited the lowest performance indicators. Based on the data analysis and result findings, six different commercial wind turbine models are analyzed, and their performance specifications are compared. Finally, it is suggested that the Enercon E-40 and E-48 models are the most suitable for the selected site, Sandwip, with a capacity factor of 21.19% (1.11 GWh/year) and 20.99% (1.47 GWh/year), respectively.

Abstract:There are some areas which in abundant of wind power on the complex topography due to the specific topographic forcing. However, it is very difficult to select the sites of wind farms on the complex landform because the distribution characteristics of wind energy potential are asymmetric. The wind patterns on the Hailing Island, which as an example of complex landform, have been investigated using observational analysis, linear theory and non-linear numerical simulation. The results indicate that the location with higher wind speeds at 60m above the ground emerge on the south slope closing the peak of the Island A, on the peak of Island B, and on the south peaks of Island C and D. © 2009 IEEE.
Analysis of Seasonal Wind Energy Potential on Zanzibar Coastal Island

Abstract:The main objectives of this research were to numerically analyze the potential for seasonal wind power (WP), assess wind direction, and select the most effective wind turbine (WT) for installation at the research site. Wind data were collected half-hourly from a branch of the Tanzania Meteorological Authority nearest to the research site. The collected data were analyzed using a double-parameter Weibull distribution (WD) model, where the standard deviation (SD) method was used to fit the WD. The results revealed that the site experienced strong winds within the range of 4.5–7 m/s between the hours of 05:00 - 20:00, with the most likely seasonal wind speed (WS) ranging from 5–7 m/s, while the mean seasonal WS was 9.07–12.14 m/s. The highest possible wind energy density (wED) of 23.3 GWh/m2 at a hub height of 10 m occurred during winter, followed by spring, autumn, and summer, with 6.39, 6.32, and 3.33 GWh/m2, respectively. The annual wED was > 13.52 GWh/m2, with a typical month-to-month energy of 1.13 GWh/m2. Finally, the study concluded that the recommended WT model (POLARIS P62-1000) was the best choice for installation at the study site due to its sustainable WS and WP potential. Based on the findings of this research, which show that the site has sustainable seasonal wind resources, it is suggested that future wind research be carried out to extend the dataset to ensure the long-term seasonal wind pattern at the site. Abstract:Offshore wind energy is a promising resource for renewable energy development. Reanalysed wind data are unmatched by other wind data sources in providing a long-term assessment of wind power potential. In this study, 10 of the selected offshore locations close to the Moroccan coast were used to evaluate the ERA5 wind reanalysis dataset against the IFREMER-blended observational dataset covering the years 1993–2016. The ERA5 wind data's capacity to represent wind variability in the area was confirmed by the results of the statistical methodologies used. All the reanalysed data scored better at capturing the observed wind variability at the southern sites than at the northern ones, where the wind variability was more complex. In a long-term evaluation from 1981 to 2020, the wind power potential in the Moroccan Atlantic coast was found to be very stable except in the northern sites and between Agadir and Bou Arich. Seven of the 10 sites considered were ranked as promising sites for offshore wind power generation, with wind power densities above 420 W/m2 at 100 m in height. Additionally, the change in signs in the variability toward the middle of the ERA5 record, which was seen at all locations and was also evident in the observations, did not significantly affect the yearly wind power density. However, the seasonal distribution of the latter was modified according to the local features of the seasonal variability.

High-resolution assessment of wind energy potential in the Hami region of Northwestern China

Abstract:Wind energy plays a pivotal role in the global effort to mitigate climate change, with China emerging as a leader in renewable energy adoption. The Hami region in northwestern China stands out as a crucial area for wind power development, given its substantial wind resources and strategic importance in China's energy landscape. However, existing studies on wind energy potential vary widely and involve large uncertainties due to sparse measurements and coarse resolution, highlighting the need for more precise assessments to guide policy decisions and optimize energy utilization. This study leverages high-resolution ERA5 reanalysis data and advanced wind turbine technology to assess wind energy potential in the Hami region, taking into account factors including wind speed patterns, turbine heights, and geographical constraints. The comparison with in-situ data demonstrated that high-resolution ERA5 reanalyzed wind speeds enable to capture multi-year wind speed variations in this region. We find substantial potential for wind energy in Hami, with energy densities exceeding 200 W/m2 in the high-potential wind zones. Importantly, this study identifies a new high-potential area in eastern Hami, termed the East Wind Zone. Our high-resolution assessment of wind energy potential at different heights over the past two decades reveals long-term trends and seasonal variations. Increasing the hub height from 95 m to 140 m raises the average wind power generation potential across Hami by 31.3 GWh/year. Our findings highlight the importance of strategic wind farm placement to maximize renewable energy output and provide insights for policy and industry, supporting China's renewable energy goals.

Abstract:Wind energy is widely distributed in China as a renewable energy source. Aiming to alleviate the issues resulting from fossil fuel consumption faced by developing and developed countries (e.g., climate change) and to meet development needs, this study innovatively proposed methods for the location selection of wind farms and wind turbines in port areas based on the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method. Considering that the wind turbine location is crucial to wind power generation, this paper focuses on locating wind turbines within a specific set of sea ports. The primary objectives of this paper are to evaluate the potential of wind power generation under different port scenarios and develop a method for assessing the potential of wind energy resources in wind farm areas. Firstly, a method is proposed for identifying the boundaries of wind farms in the port areas and locating wind turbines at sea ports. Furthermore, this study used the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) wind speed database to test the proposed method with the real-world wind power projects of the Ports of Tianjin, Shanghai, Xiamen, Shenzhen, and Hainan, which are top ports within five major coastal port clusters in China. It is found that the potential power generation capacity of the wind power farms at the above ports is 30.71 GWh, 19.82 GWh, 16.72 GWh, 29.45 GWh, and 24.42 GWh, respectively. Additionally, sensitive results for different types of wind turbines are conducted in the following experiment. The results of this study are fundamental for enriching the research of evaluating wind energy resources of sea ports and promoting the development and use of clean energy in practical environments. Further, the method proposed in this study is essential for optimizing the location and construction of wind turbines, which may help ports in adopting a low-carbon and green development path, thereby mitigating air pollution, and promoting sustainable development.

Abstract:Wind energy is an indispensable component of the power supply. To date, the majority of wind energy is generated based on the surface wind energy projects; however, it has a few technical limitations in satisfying the increasing power demand. Recently, more promising high-altitude wind energy projects (HAWEP) were started around the world using the emerging airborne wind power technology. This process technically requires the determination of high-altitude wind-energy potential for appropriately planning HAWEP. Nevertheless, most of the previous wind-energy potential assessment studies have considered only the wind energy close to the surface; few studies have focused on high-altitude wind energy. To bridge this gap, this study implements a comprehensive assessment of the high-altitude wind-energy potential of offshore China. The assessment applies the intelligent-optimized single and combined distributions to fit the high-altitude wind speed of 20 study sites and identifies the top-ranked distributions. Wind power density and available time are estimated and the general features of high-altitude wind-energy potential in the study area are discussed. The findings of this study can provide valuable suggestions for developing differentiated policies for HAWEP planning.
