Abstract:Replacement of flammable organic liquid electrolytes with solid Li+ conductors is a promising approach to realize excellent performance of Li metal batteries. However, ceramic electrolytes are either easily reduced by Li metal or penetrated by Li dendrites through their grain boundaries, and polymer electrolytes are also faced with instability on the electrode/electrolyte interface and weak mechanical property. Here, we report a three-dimensional fiber-network-reinforced bicontinuous solid composite electrolyte with flexible Li+-conductive network (lithium aluminum titanium phosphate (LATP)/polyacrylonitrile), which helps to enhance electrochemical stability on the electrode/electrolyte interface by isolating Li and LATP and suppress Li dendrites growth by mechanical reinforcement of fiber network for the composite solid electrolyte. The composite electrolyte shows an excellent electrochemical stability after 15 days of contact with Li metal and has an enlarged tensile strength (10.72 MPa) compared to the pure poly(ethylene oxide)-bistrifluoromethanesulfonimide lithium salt electrolyte, leading to a long-term stability and safety of the Li symmetric battery with a current density of 0.3 mA cm-2 for 400 h. In addition, the composite electrolyte also shows good electrochemical and thermal stability. Abstract:As the demand for high energy-density and safe Li-based batteries, the development of composite solid polymer electrolytes (CSPEs) with high ionic conductivity and high electrochemical stability are significant. Herein, the amorphous infinite coordination polymer (ICP) nano-network of Ce-coordinate polyphenol ellagic acid (EACe2) is introduced into PEO matrix to achieve highly endurable Li metal batteries (LMBs). Different from conventional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with discrete crystalline grains, ICP network with high interconnectivity and self-assembly capability enables the better penetration effect and multi-scale interaction of filler in PEO. EACe2 nano-filler promotes the improvement of ionic conductivity and Li-ion transference number of CSPEs, as well as the construction of robust solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) with the concentration of LiF, Li2O and Li2S, leading to ultrastable and kinetically favorable Li/Li cells with dendrite-mitigated cycling over 8800 h. The low interfacial resistances (16 Ω cm2 and 20.5 Ω cm2 for CSPE-EACe2/Li and CSPE-EACe2/LiFePO4 respectively) can achieve highly reversible Li/LiFePO4 cells (with capacities of 102.6 mAh g−1 after 2000 cycles at 0.5 C and 103.2 mAh g−1 after 1200 cycles at 1 C). This CSPE-EACe2 membrane also enables the tolerance of high-voltage cathode (LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2, up to 4.3 V), room temperature operation, and ultrathin thickness (25-μm-thick).<ol class="links-for-figure"><li><a class="anchor download-link u-font-sans" href="https://ars.els-cdn.com/content/image/1-s2.0-S2405829721002701-fx1_lrg.jpg">Download : Download high-res image (232KB)</a></li><li><a class="anchor download-link u-font-sans" href="https://ars.els-cdn.com/content/image/1-s2.0-S2405829721002701-fx1.jpg">Download : Download full-size image</a></li></ol>

Abstract:While all‐solid‐state Li metal batteries based on ceramic solid‐electrolytes offer higher energy density and better safety features over their liquid counterparts, critical challenges in their design such as high electrode–electrolyte interface resistance and formation of Li‐dendrites still remain unsolved. To address the issues, an intimate contact between Li and the solid‐state electrolyte is necessary. Herein, a flexible and mechanically robust polymer membrane comprising of poly(ethylene oxide), lithium perchlorate, and garnet particles is used as an interlayer between Li metal and garnet ceramic electrolyte. The Li salt enhances the ionic conductivity of the membranes and ensures their flexible nature while garnet particles enhance their mechanical strength. The cells comprising of composite membranes results in four times smaller charge transfer resistance at the interface and demonstrate stable and reversible Li plating/stripping voltage profiles. Further, the polymer composite membrane mechanically blocks the formation of Li dendrites at reasonably high currents (0.1 mA cm−2) in the structures even after prolonged cycling (140 h) owing to their enhanced toughness. With smaller charge transfer resistance (≈400 Ω cm2 at room temperature), stability at extended periods of cycling and no Li‐dendrite formations, the structures can prove a viable electrolyte candidate for advanced solid‐state Li metal batteries.

Abstract:The application of solid polymer electrolytes for Li metal batteries (LMBs) is hindered by the Li/electrolyte interface instability and poor mechanical strength. Herein, a flexible composite solid electrolyte with a cross-linked double-network structure of inorganic particles and polymer was constructed by an in situ gel-sol method. The as-prepared electrolyte promoted the formation of a stable solid electrolyte interface on the Li metal surface and suppressed the formation of Li dendrites more than pure polymer electrolytes. Particularly, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results demonstrated the beneficial effect of inorganic particles for suppressing the side reactions between the Li metal and polymer. Additionally, the as-prepared electrolyte exhibited a reduction of polymer crystallinity, which can facilitate Li+ transport by weaking the interactions between Li+ and the polymer chains. The Li|Li symmetric batteries were stabilized to maintain successive electrodeposition over 1400 h of the plating/stripping process. Furthermore, the Li|LiFePO4 batteries displayed excellent cycling performance at a rate of 0.3 C, revealing tremendous potential in promoting the large-scale application of future LMBs.

Abstract:Metal organic framework (MOF)-polymer composite solid electrolyte membrane with novel microstructure is expected to show attractive prospect for solid state lithium metal batteries. But the reported MOF were usually regarded as an entirety in composite solid electrolyte resulting in tradeoff between ionic conductivity and lithium dendrite inhibition ability. Herein, MOF-polymer composite membrane with vertically aligned channels and ultrathin MOF layer is proposed to decrease lithium ion transportation resistance obtained by simple phase inversion and in situ coordinated growth methods. The vertically aligned highways can decrease tortuous pathways and intensify ion conduction. The embedded ultrathin MOF layer on membrane surface leads to homogeneous plating/stripping of lithium. This novel structured MOF-polymer composite solid electrolyte exhibits improved ionic conductivity of 0.55 mS cm-1 at 22 degrees C and lithium ion transference number of 0.87. Furthermore, the Li/Li symmetrical cell shows stable lithium plating/stripping performance for 1100 h at 0.1 mA cm-2 and 0.1 mA h cm-2. LiFePO4/MOF-polymer/Li coin battery demonstrates good rate capability and cycling performance with capacity retention of 82 % after 100 cycles at 0.2C and the pouch cell can light up the "DLUT" blue light lamp under folding and cutting states. This work encourages a new avenue to develop composite solid electrolytes with ion transportation highways and uniform distribution plane for solid lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:Composite solid-state electrolytes (CSEs) that integrate the merits of different components are considered to be promising candidates for next-generation high-energy density lithium metal batteries. Herein, we have successfully designed a flexible CSE membrane consisting of the ceramic conducting Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)(3)(LATP) filler, polyethylene oxide (PEO) matrix, and 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (BMP-TFSI) ionic liquid. In particular, the addition of ionic liquid (BMP-TFSI) can not only decrease the interface impedance between the polymer and LATP ceramic fillers and improve the ionic conductivity, but also prevent the adverse reaction between Ti(4+)in LATP and Li metal and further enhance the interface stability. Benefitting from the synergistic effect of organic-inorganic hybrids, the obtained composite electrolyte membrane achieves an excellent ionic conductivity of 2.42 x 10(-4)S cm(-1)at 30 degrees C and a wide electrochemical stability window of 5 V (vs.Li+/Li). Moreover, the CSE membrane exhibits outstanding Li dendrite suppression capability, which is proved by galvanostatic Li plating/stripping tests for 1000 h. Assembled with this solid electrolyte membrane and a commercial LiFePO(4)cathode, all-solid-state lithium metal batteries demonstrate superior rate capability and outstanding cycling stability at both 30 and 45 degrees C. These results demonstrate that such a flexible composite electrolyte is a promising alternative electrolyte for practical high-energy density all-solid-state batteries.

Abstract:To realize high energy density solid-state lithium (Li) metal batteries with enhanced safety, composite polymer electrolyte (CPE) that combines the advantages of both inorganic and polymer electrolytes is widely investigated. However, conventional CPE typically possesses low ionic conductivity and generate uneven ion distribution at the electrolyte-electrode interface, which can result in large internal resistance and severe Li dendrite growth. Herein, a novel CPE with high ionic conductivity of 3.1 x 10(-4) S cm(-1) and Li+ transference number is prepared to achieve dendrite-free Li deposition. Threedimensional (3D) Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO) nanofiber is incorporated into poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) and further reinforced by poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) binder. The anions immobilized by the polymer matrix and ceramic fillers in the CPE help to guide uniform Li+ distribution without dendrite formation. Consequently, the Li symmetric cell assembled with CPE exhibits a stable potential and robust cyclic performance beyond 3200 h at 0.1 mA cm(-2). A high discharge capacity and capacity retention are also achieved by Li/CPE/LiFePO4 cell after cycling for 200 cycles at 0.2C.& nbsp;(C) 2022 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:Significance This work describes a flexible, solid-state, lithium-ion–conducting membrane based on a 3D ion-conducting network and polymer electrolyte for lithium batteries. The 3D ion-conducting network is based on percolative garnet-type Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 2 Al 0.2 O 12 solid-state electrolyte nanofibers, which enhance the ionic conductivity of the solid-state electrolyte membrane at room temperature and improve the mechanical strength of the polymer electrolyte. The membrane has shown superior electrochemical stability to high voltage and high mechanical stability to effectively block lithium dendrites. This work represents a significant breakthrough to enable high performance of lithium batteries.

A robust crosslinked polysiloxane-embedded nanofiber membrane for long-cycle lithium metal batteries

Abstract:The shortcomings such as undesired severe lithium-dendrite growth and side-reactions impede the applications of lithium batteries. Investigation into the formation of uniform lithium-ion diffusion layers provides new insights into the suppression of dendrite growth and stabilization of lithium metal. Herein, cross-linked nanofibrous polysiloxane hybrid membranes (SHMs) are fabricated via simple processes involving the electrospinning of poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene), vinyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane, and functional cage silsesquioxanes. The functional polar groups on the SHMs impart lithiophilicity to the membranes, thus enabling them to form artificial solid electrolyte interfaces to guide uniform Li-ion flux distribution, ensure smooth lithium deposition, and fundamentally alter dendrite formation. In addition, the shear enhancement effect of polydimethylsiloxane 3D networks not only changes the surface morphology but also facilitates the migration of lithium ions. As a result, with the introduction of these SHMs, the Li||Li symmetric batteries were stabilized and thus able to maintain successive electrodeposition over 800 h at 0.5 mA cm−2 and the LiFePO4||Li cells exhibit a high capacity of 112 mAh g–1 and 96.7% capacity retention after 400 cycles at 2C. This work provides an effective strategy for the suppression of uncontrolled lithium dendrite formation and the enhancement of cycling performance.

Abstract:A flexible composite solid electrolyte membrane consisting of inorganic solid particles (Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)(3)), polyethylene oxide (PEO), and boronized polyethylene glycol (BPEG) is prepared and investigated. This membrane exhibits good stability against lithium dendrite, which can be attributed to its well-designed combination components: the compact inorganic lithium ion conducting layer provides the membrane with good mechanical strength and physically barricades the free growth of lithium dendrite; while the addition of planar BPEG oligomers not only disorganizes the crystallinity of the PEO domain, leading to good ionic conductivity, but also facilitates a "soft contact" between interfaces, which not only chemically enables homogeneous lithium plating/stripping on the lithium metal anode, but also reduces the polarization effects. In addition, by employing this membrane to a LiFePO4/Li cell and testing its galvanostatic cycling performances at 60 degrees C, capacities of 158.2 and 94.2 mA h g(-1) are delivered at 0.1 C and 2 C, respectively.
Flexible Composite Electrolyte Membranes with Fast Ion Transport Channels for Solid-State Lithium Batteries

Abstract:Numerous endeavors have been dedicated to the development of composite polymer electrolyte (CPE) membranes for all-solid-state batteries (SSBs). However, insufficient ionic conductivity and mechanical properties still pose great challenges in practical applications. In this study, a flexible composite electrolyte membrane (FCPE) with fast ion transport channels was prepared using a phase conversion process combined with in situ polymerization. The polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoro propylene (PVDF-HFP) polymer matrix incorporated with lithium lanthanum zirconate (LLZTO) formed a 3D net-like structure, and the in situ polymerized polyvinyl ethylene carbonate (PVEC) enhanced the interface connection. This 3D network, with multiple rapid pathways for Li+ that effectively control Li+ flux, led to uniform lithium deposition. Moreover, the symmetrical lithium cells that used FCPE exhibited high stability after 1200 h of cycling at 0.1 mA cm−2. Specifically, all-solid-state lithium batteries coupled with LiFePO4 cathodes can stably cycle for over 100 cycles at room temperature with high Coulombic efficiencies. Furthermore, after 100 cycles, the infrared spectrum shows that the structure of FCPE remains stable. This work demonstrates a novel insight for designing a flexible composite electrolyte for highly safe SSBs.

Abstract:The primary obstacle hindering the application of composite solid electrolytes lies in the varying demands posed by the Li metal anode and the cathode, which needs to be capable of suppressing dendrite growth and resisting high voltage simultaneously. In this work, a new asymmetric composite solid-state electrolyte prepared via electrospinning and in-situ polymerization is proposed to address these shortcomings. In this bilayer architecture, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) layer of high-voltage tolerance, polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) layer of robust mechanical strength and good compatibility towards Li-anode are constructed, and metal-organic-frameworks (MOFs) are pre-embedded within both layers. The unique design provides a wide electrochemical stability window meanwhile ensures uniform lithium deposition. Remarkably, it exhibits a superior lithium utilization of 41 mAh cm −2 using a lean polymer electrolyte precursor and a high critical current density of 2.2 mA cm −2 with a thickness of 40 μm. Beneficial from the formation of a self-adjustable gradient solid electrolyte interphase in the Li/PVDF-HFP interface, the asymmetric electrolyte endows Li||Li and Li||NCM811 cells with excellent cycling stability. Moreover, the solid-state pouch cell exhibits reliable operation under extreme conditions. This work provides inspiration for the design and fabrication of composite solid electrolytes for next-generation high-voltage Li metal batteries.
