Abstract:Quantifying equilibrium Sn isotope fractionation among Sn-bearing minerals is fundamental for understanding the partitioning of Sn isotopes during various geological and cosmochemical processes. In this study, we used first-principles calculations to evaluate equilibrium Sn isotope fractionations among 13 Sn-bearing minerals. The Sn isotope reduced partition function ratios (RPFRs or beta factors) calculated with the state-of-the-art r(2)SCAN functional decrease in the order of brannockite > eakerite > megawite > cassiterite > pirquitasite > kesterite > stannite > berndtite-2T similar or equal to hydroromarchite > romarchite > ottemannite > herzenbergite > native tin. At high temperatures, the variation range can still be large. The 1000 ln(122/116) beta values show a linear relationship with the average Sn force constants in minerals. The results indicate that under equilibrium, the preference of heavy Sn isotope partitioning decreases in the order of Sn(IV) minerals > Sn(II) minerals > native tin. Stannic silicates are enriched in heavy Sn isotopes among all of the minerals, and oxides are enriched in heavy Sn isotopes relative to sulfides in addition to the effect of the oxidation state of Sn. The RPFRs for hydrothermal Sn species are between those of oxide and sulfide minerals at the corresponding oxidation states. These results provide a data set of equilibrium Sn isotope fractionation factors, which indicates that the changes in the coordination environment and in the oxidation state can have similar effects on equilibrium Sn isotope fractionation. This could be important in interpreting natural Sn isotope variabilities.
Sn(II) Chloride Speciation and Equilibrium Sn Isotope Fractionation under Hydrothermal Conditions: A First Principles Study

Abstract:Knowledge of Sn(II) speciation in aqueous and gaseous phases and the corresponding isotope effects are critical for understanding the transport and deposition of Sn in various geological and cosmochemical processes. In this study, we use first principles method to investigate the speciation of stannous (Sn(II)) chloride in fluids under hydrothermal and supercritical conditions. The results show that SnCl3-, SnCl2(H2O) and SnCl(H2O)(2)(+) are stable in hydrothermal solutions at temperatures of up to 300 degrees C, with SnCl3- being the dominant species, whereas SnCl2 and SnCl2(H2O) are the stable species in vapor phases. Notably, SnCl2 is found to be stable under supercritical conditions. The reduced partition function ratios (beta factors) for the stable Sn(II) species and three major Sn minerals (cassiterite, megawite, and romarchite) are also calculated by first principles methods. The calculation results show that under equilibrium, heavy Sn isotopes are preferentially partitioned into stannic (Sn (IV)) species, and gaseous species enrich heavy Sn isotopes relative to aqueous species. Based on the equilibrium Sn isotope fractionation factors derived in this study, we use a transport-precipitation model to evaluate the Sn isotope response to cassiterite precipitation in hydrothermal fluids. The modeling results show that significant Sn isotope variability could be produced during cassiterite precipitation, with temperature and Sn speciation being the primary controlling factors. Furthermore, by comparing the Sn isotope variability in natural cassiterite and those derived from the model, we argue that Sn should occur predominantly as Sn(IV) species in hydrothermal fluids during cassiterite precipitation in tin mineralizing systems. Equilibrium Sn Isotope Fractionation Between Aqueous Sn and Sn-bearing Minerals: Constrained by First-Principles Calculations

Abstract:Equilibrium Sn isotope fractionation properties between aqueous Sn (2+, 4+) species and Sn-bearing minerals are the key to using tin isotopes to trace the transportation, enrichment, and precipitation of tin in various geological processes. However, the application of Sn isotope geochemistry has been impeded by the absence of equilibrium Sn isotopic fractionation factors between Sn-bearing minerals and fluid and between mineral pairs. In this contribution, we conducted first-principles calculations based on the density functional theory to obtain the equilibrium Sn isotopic fractionation factors between aqueous Sn complexes and minerals. For Sn-bearing complexes in solution, the reduced partition function ratios (p) are determined by taking snapshots from the molecular dynamics trajectories and computing the average p of the snapshots based on the lowest energy atomic coordinates. For Sn-bearing minerals, static first-principles periodic density functional theory methods are performed. The results show that the p factors decrease in the sequence of malayaite(s) (Sn4+) > cassiterite(s) (Sn4+) > Sn(4+)Cl4(H2O)(2(aq)) > Sn2+F3(aq)- > Sn2+(OH)2(aq) > Sn2+CO3(aq) > stannite((s)) (Sn4+) > Sn2+Cl3(aq)-. The predicted Sn isotope fractionation follows several distinct patterns. (1) For minerals, the Sn isotope fractionations (1000ln alpha(minerals-stannite)) of cassiteritestannite and malayaite-stannite mineral pairs are controlled by the properties of elements coordinating with tin, and the equilibrium Sn isotope fractionation factors between mineral pairs are large enough to make them powerful Sn isotope thermometers. (2) For Sn-bearing aqueous species, the p values of tin (4+) complexes are remarkably larger than those of all aqueous Sn2+ species, indicating that higher valence tin is preferentially enriched heavy tin isotopes. For aqueous Sn2+ species, the aqueous species with shorter bonds are more-enriched in heavy Sn isotopes than those with longer bonds. When both the valence state and bond length are different, the valence state is the main factor controlling tin isotope fractionation. (3) During the precipitation of various Sn2+ aqueous complexes into cassiterite or malayaite, heavy Sn isotopes tend to be enriched in minerals, while there are two situations for the precipitation of Sn2+ complexes into stannite. When Sn is transported in hydrothermal solution as Sn2+Cl3-, stannite precipitation leads to the enrichment of light tin isotopes in the residual solution and late minerals. On the contrary, other Sn2+ species [Sn2+F3-, Sn2+(OH)(2) and Sn2+CO3] that precipitate as stannite will result in the enrichment of heavy tin isotopes in the residual solutions . In addition, the direct precipitation of Sn4+ complexes into cassiterite, malayaite, or stannite also produces considerable tin isotope fractionation. During precipitation, Sn4+ aqueous complexes form cassiterite or malayaite, and heavy Sn isotopes tend to be enriched in minerals; whereas when aqueous Sn4+ species are precipitated into stannite, heavy Sn isotopes are enriched in the residual fluid and late minerals. The calculated results are essential for further understanding the mechanisms of Sn isotopic fractionation in various Sn-involved geological processes.
Fe Isotopic Fractionation During the Magmatic–hydrothermal Stage of Granitic Magmatism

Abstract:Felsic intrusive magmatic systems are more complex than volcanic systems as they involve prolonged magmatic processes in addition to potentially multiple phases of magmatic hydrothermal activity within a single pluton. In particular, the competition between exsolved magmatic fluids and crystallizing minerals for elements and isotopes during the magmatic hydrothermal stages of evolution of these systems remains unclear despite fluid exsolution being one of the key steps in ore formation. This study focuses on a suite of representative Late Jurassic W-Sn mineralization-related granites within the Nanling Range of southern China and investigates the behavior of Fe isotopes during magmatic differentiation and magmatic hydrothermal processes recorded within these granites. The granites in the study area have variable delta Fe-56 values (relative to IRMM-014) ranging from 0.12 parts per thousand +/- 0.04 parts per thousand -0.42 parts per thousand +/- 0.01 parts per thousand. These values do not correlate with bulk-rock geochemical indicators of fluid exsolution (e.g., Zr/Hf, Nb/Ta, K/Rb, and F/Cl ratios), qualitatively indicating that fluid exsolution has an insignificant effect on Fe isotopic fractionation. We further quantified the relative contributions of fluid exsolution and crystal fractionation on bulk-rock Fe isotopic variability using a Rayleigh fractionation model. This modeling indicates that fluid exsolution can only generate a <0.07 parts per thousand increase in bulk-rock delta Fe-56 values of the Nanling granites even in the most fluid-abundant scenario. This means that Fe isotopic fractionation is controlled mainly by fractional crystallization during the magmatic hydrothermal stages of the evolution of granitic magmas. This further suggests that Fe isotopes could be used to study the magmatic differentiation of felsic magma chambers, including those within fluid-rich mineralizing magmatic systems. Equilibrium indium isotope fractionation between indium-bearing minerals: Insights from first-principles calculations

Abstract:Indium (In) is a critical element for electronics and catalysis industries and a volatile metal during planet accretion. Indium isotopes can be used to study cosmochemical and geochemical processes, but no equilibrium indium isotope fractionation factor is available, which restricts our knowledge of indium enrichment and incorporation during geological processes. Here, we investigate the reduced partition function ratios (10 3 lnβ ) of 115 In/ 113 In in indium-bearing minerals using first-principles calculations. The results show that 10 3 lnβ decreases in the following sequence of dzhalindite > laforetite > roquesite > cadmoindite > Ag-Sn-In-doped sphalerite ≈ Cu-In-doped sphalerite ≈ Cu-Sn-In-doped sphalerite > yixunite > indite > damiaoite > native indium. We found that chemical composition may affect indium isotope fractionation factor in indium-doped sphalerite with Zn/In from 4 to 80 and indium alloys by changing the length of indium bonds. Furthermore, the chemical composition is not only related to the bond length and coordination number (CN) of the target element but also to the electronegativity of other doped elements, which can influence equilibrium indium isotope fractionation. The variation in 10 3 lnβ of indium-doped sphalerites and independent minerals predicts measurable isotopic differences between indium-bearing minerals. The equilibrium indium isotope fractionation factors calculated in this study provide important guides for the potential applications of indium isotopes in geological processes.

Prediction of equilibrium Li isotope fractionation between minerals and aqueous solutions at high P and T: an efficient ab initio approach

Abstract:The mass-dependent equilibrium stable isotope fractionation between different materials is an important geochemical process. Here we present an efficient method to compute the isotope fractionation between complex minerals and fluids at high pressure, P, and temperature, T, representative for the Earth's crust and mantle. The method is tested by computation of the equilibrium fractionation of lithium isotopes between aqueous fluids and various Li bearing minerals such as staurolite, spodumene and mica. We are able to correctly predict the direction of the isotope fractionation as observed in the experiments. On the quantitative level the computed fractionation factors agree within 1.0 permil with the experimental values indicating predictive power of ab initio methods. We show that with ab initio methods we are able to investigate the underlying mechanisms driving the equilibrium isotope fractionation process, such as coordination of the fractionating elements, their bond strengths to the neighboring atoms, compression of fluids and thermal expansion of solids. This gives valuable insight into the processes governing the isotope fractionation mechanisms on the atomic scale. The method is applicable to any state and does not require different treatment of crystals and fluids.

Abstract:ABSTRACTCorrelative fractionation relationships of sulphur isotope data for coexisting sulphate and sulphide pairs from hydrothermal ore deposits on δ38S versus Δ34S diagrams are deciphered theoretically. Taking into account dissolved H2S and SO42‐ in hydrothermal fluids during precipitation of both sulphate and sulphide minerals, a 4‐species closed system is suggested for describing the conservation of mass among all sulphur‐bearing species on the δ‐Δ diagrams. The covariation in the δ34S values of both sulphate and sulphide is ascribed to isotopic exchange between oxidized and reduced sulphur species during mineral precipitation. The isotopic exchange could be a thermodynamic process due to simple cooling of high temperature fluids, which results in an equilibrium fractionation, or a kinetic process due to mixing of two sulphur reservoirs, which leads to a disequilibrium fractionation. The δ34S value of total sulphur in a hydrothermal system could change due to the precipitation of minerals, or due to the escape of H2S and/or SO42‐. Sulphur isotope data for anhydrite and pyrite pairs from the Luohe porphyrite iron deposit in the Yangtze River Valley is used to illustrate the mixing responsible for the disequilibrium fractionation.
Competition of Equilibrium and Kinetic Silicon Isotope Fractionation During Silica Precipitation from Acidic to Alkaline Ph Solutions in Geothermal Systems

Abstract:As an important volcanic geothermal region in China, Tengchong belongs to the Mediterranean-Himalayan geothermal belt and is characterized by a wide distribution of geothermal systems. The study area- Rehai- is the sole geothermal area in Tengchong in mainland China that discharges both acidic and alkaline hot springs with pH values ranging from 1.6 to 9.7 at temperatures between 50 and 97 degrees C. Natural geothermal environments with large variations in pH and temperature are ideal study sites to investigate silicon (Si) isotope fractionation mechanisms which are still insufficiently understood. In this study, we investigated 3 different geothermal systems, which have distinct fluid characteristics: (1) type I fluid from Diretiyan Spring (pH: 1.6-2.5, H-SO4 water, saturated with respect to quartz), (2) type II fluid from Zhenzhuquan Spring (pH: 6.4, Na-Cl-SO4 water, saturated with respect to quartz), and (3) type III fluid from Dagunguo Spring (pH: 7.8-9.7, Na-Cl water, oversaturated with respect to amorphous silica: SiO2am). The mechanisms controlling Si isotope fractionation during Si precipitation differ significantly between the three fluid types. In type I fluid, equilibrium fractionation controls Si isotope variability during silica precipitation, causing the highest natural Si isotope equilibrium fractionation (Delta Si-30) detected to date, ranging in Delta Si-30(quartz-fluid) from +1.09 parts per thousand to +2.78 parts per thousand. The equilibrium isotope fractionation is essentially caused by balanced precipitation and dissolution rates and high ionic strength of the geothermal fluids. In type II fluid, amorphous silica formed during evaporation and/or cooling of the spring water during capillary rise and a kinetically controlled, uni-directional Si isotope fractionation is observed. In type III fluid, the Delta(30) SiSiO2am-fluid ranges from - 1.57 parts per thousand to +0.55 parts per thousand at the temperature range of 80-100 degrees C. The Delta Si-30(SiO2am-fluid) show a shift from kinetic to equilibrium controlled fractionation and demonstrate that isotopic re-equilibration can reset the original kinetic Si isotope values in dependence of the hydrochemical conditions like pH, temperature and ionic strength as well as reaction time. Here we show that isotopic re-equilibration after solid formation can shift the isotopic signatures originally inherited during precipitation, challenging the interpretation of Si isotope values in the ancient rock record. Iron isotope fractionation in reduced hydrothermal gold deposits: A case study of the Wulong gold deposit, Liaodong Peninsula, East China

Abstract:Abstract Iron isotope fractionation in hydrothermal systems is a useful diagnostic tool for tracing ore-forming processes. Here, we report on the Fe isotopic compositions of a suite of hydrothermal minerals from ores (pyrite, pyrrhotite, and quartz) from the Wulong gold deposit, Liaodong Peninsula, East China. Pyrites from quartz sulfide ores show a δ56Fe (56Fe/54Fe in the sample relative to IRMM-14) range from +0.11 ± 0.03‰ to +0.78 ± 0.03‰ (2SD), and pyrrhotites from the same vein are isotopically lighter than the pyrites, varying between −0.85 ± 0.01‰ and −0.07 ± 0.00‰. This result is consistent with theoretical predictions of equilibrium fractionation and published mineral compositions. For the first time, to our knowledge, we report the Fe isotopes of hydrothermal quartz that records the isotopic compositions of the ore-forming fluids. Two quartz separates in the quartz-sulfide vein yield δ56Fe values of −0.02 ± 0.02‰ and +0.07 ± 0.07‰. Our Fe isotope fractionation calculations show that pyrrhotite with light Fe isotopes crystallized first from the ore-forming fluids, which indicates a relatively reduced condition for the initial ore-forming fluids. Then the remaining fluids with heavy Fe isotopes precipitated pyrites with positive δ56Fe values, and their mineral crystallization sequence records an increase of oxygen fugacity during mineralization. Gold deposits in Wulong and Jiaodong share many similar geological characteristics. The pyrites from the Wulong deposit have higher δ34S values (+0.5 to +4.1‰) than the pyrrhotites (–1.2 to +1.2‰). Pyrites from the Jiaodong gold deposits show a wide range of both positive and negative δ56Fe values as well as high δ34S values, whereas those from the Wulong deposit have a relatively narrow range of positive δ56Fe values and near-zero δ34S values. The differences in Fe isotopes may be due to early precipitation of pyrrhotite with light Fe isotopes under a relatively low oxygen fugacity environment in the Wulong deposit, resulting in pyrite precipitated from the remaining fluids with heavy isotopes. The sulfur isotope variations between Wulong and Jiaodong gold deposits reflect differences in their source regions rather than oxygen fugacities. In addition, we have compiled Fe isotopic compositions of pyrites and pyrrhotites from different types of ore deposits to investigate their Fe isotopic behavior in magmatic-hydrothermal systems. Pyrite grains show a wide range of δ56Fe values. Positive pyrite δ 56Fe values reflect an equilibrium isotope effect, whereas negative pyrite δ56Fe values may be due to kinetic isotope effects or to a mixture of sedimentary host rocks. Pyrrhotite grains show similar negative δ56Fe values, and they have a strong influence on the Fe isotope systematics in magmatic and hydrothermal systems. Our data show that Fe isotopes can be used to trace precipitation orders of pyrite and pyrrhotite and oxygen fugacity evolution in relatively reduced hydrothermal deposits.

Abstract:Studies of the Fe, Cu, and Zn isotopic compositions of volcanic rocks and sulfides provide an important tool for understanding magmatic, hydrothermal, and alteration processes, thereby enabling the determination of both transition metal sources and the quantification of the petrologic environmental impacts of hydrothermal activities. In this study, the δ56Fe and δ57Fe values of the mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORBs) are higher than those of the seafloor hydrothermal fluids, while the reverse is true for the δ66Zn and δ68Zn values, suggesting that basalt-fluid interactions preferentially incorporate isotopically light Fe and heavy Zn into the fluids, resulting in the relative enrichment of heavier Fe and lighter Zn isotopes in altered basaltic rocks. Most of the δ56Fe values (−1.96 to +0.11‰) of the sulfide minerals are within the range of the vent fluids, but they are significantly lower than those of the MORBs and back-arc basin basalts (BABBs), suggesting that the Fe in the sulfides was mainly derived from the fluids. However, the majority of the chalcopyrite δ56Fe and δ57Fe values are higher than those of the sphalerite and pyrite. This suggests that high-temperature sulfide minerals are enriched in 56Fe and 57Fe, whereas medium- and low-temperature sulfides are depleted in 56Fe and 57Fe. Moreover, the δ65Cu (−0.88 to −0.16‰) and δ66Zn (−0.39 to −0.03‰) values of the sulfide minerals are significantly lower than those of the MORBs, BABBs, and fluids, suggesting that 63Cu and 64Zn were preferentially removed from the fluids and incorporated into the chalcopyrite and sphalerite, respectively. Consequently, vent fluid injection and deposition can cause the heavier Cu and Zn isotopic compositions of hydrothermal plumes, seawater, and sediments.

Abstract:In hydrothermal fluids, disulfur (S 2 • - ) and trisulfur (S 3 • - ) radical anions have been observed to coexist with the major hydrogen sulfide and sulfate species. These radical ions have potentially important effects on the solubility, transport and fractionation of metals and sulfur, with consequences for ore deposit formation and, more generally, for geochemical cycles of metals and volatiles. It is therefore essential to know the intrinsic isotopic properties of these important sulfur species in order to use sulfur isotopes for tracing different geological processes. Here, the theoretical equilibrium isotopic properties of the disulfur and trisulfur radical ions are computed and compared to the hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) and sulfate ion (SO 4 2− ), using, for the first time, a first-principles molecular dynamics (MD) approach. The isotopic properties are calculated directly from molecular dynamics trajectories using the vibrational density of states and the atomic kinetic energy, and then compared to the more established method based on sampling of several snapshots. This comparison allowed us to validate the new modelling method and to assess its advantages and limitations. The predicted equilibrium isotope fractionation in terms of 34 S/ 32 S between S 2 • - and S 3 • - is small, i.e. <1 ‰, with a slight enrichment in the heavier isotope for S 3 •- , over the temperature range 200–500 °C. Both radical ions are slightly depleted in the heavier isotope, by 1 to 2‰, relative to aqueous H 2 S. Our results help tuning sulfur isotope fractionation models used for tracing the origin and evolution of hydrothermal fluids. Our method opens large perspectives for using the rapidly growing body of MD simulation data in geosciences on structure and stability of aqueous complexes to assess in parallel element isotope fractionations from MD-generated trajectories.

Abstract:Equilibrium isotope fractionation factors are the basis for application of stable isotopes in geological studies. Experimental calibration and theoretical calculations have been employed to determine Fe isotope fractionation factors for a variety of minerals, however, these methods have their limitations. An alternative approach to calibrating inter-mineral Fe isotope fractionation factors is to use well-characterized geological samples; this approach has unique advantages over the other methods including attainment of equilibrium at relatively low temperatures. In this study, we investigated the Fe isotope composition of magnetite (Mt), garnet (Grt), amphibole (Amp) and biotite (Bt) from the metamorphosed Yingshan iron formation in South China. Two independent geothermometers, quartz-magnetite oxygen isotope and amphibole-garnet-biotite Fe-Mg exchange geothermometers, give a consistent metamorphic temperature of 538 +/- 39 degrees C. The Fe isotope composition of the different Fe-bearing minerals is highly variable in different ironstone samples, with delta Fe-56 values (relative to IRMM-014) ranging from -0.23 to +0.37 parts per thousand in magnetite, -0.44 to +0.09 parts per thousand in amphibole, -0.78 to +0.02 parts per thousand in garnet, and -0.61 to +0.04 parts per thousand in biotite. Despite that, the offsets of delta Fe-56 values for mineral pairs are consistent, implying attainment of equilibrium isotope fraction between these minerals. Inter-mineral Fe isotopic fractionations (+/- 2 standard deviation) measured from the multiple mineral pairs are Delta Fe-56(Mt-Grt) = +0.55 +/- 0.08 parts per thousand, Delta Fe-56(Mt-Amp) = +0.25 +/- 0.06 parts per thousand, Delta Fe-56(Mt-Bt) = +0.42 +/- 0.11 parts per thousand, Delta Fe-56(Amp-Grt) = +0.34 +/- 0.15 parts per thousand, Delta Fe-56(Amp-Bt) = +0.26 +/- 0.04 parts per thousand, and Delta Fe-56(Bt-Grt) = +0.13 +/- 0.08 parts per thousand. Based on the well-defined metamorphic temperature (538 +/- 39 degrees C) and internally consistent inter-mineral fractionation factors, the temperature-dependent functions for equilibrium Fe isotope fractionation between the following mineral pairs are derived: 10(3)ln alpha(Mt-Grt) = 0.36(+/- 0.05) x 10(6)/T-2, 10(3)ln alpha(Mt-Bt) = 0.28(+/- 0.07) x 10(6)/T-2, 10(3)ln alpha(Mt-Amp) = 0.16(+/- 0.04) x 10(6)/T-2, 10(3)ln alpha(Amp-Grt) = 0.22(+/- 0.10) x 10(6)/T-2, 10(3)ln alpha(Amp-Bt) = 0.17(+/- 0.03) x 10(6)/T-2, and 10(3)ln alpha(Bt-Grt) = 0.09(+/- 0.05) x 10(6)/T-2, where Fe3+/Sigma Fe ratio is 0.05 +/- 0.02 in garnet, 0.29 +/- 0.04 in biotite, and 0.24 +/- 0.06 in amphibole for the above functions. The equilibrium Fe isotope fractionation factors derived in this study enable estimation of the metamorphic temperature of rocks that contain these mineral pairs, and identification of secondary processes that may have induced disequilibrium Fe isotope distribution in rocks, such as retrograde metamorphism and hydrothermal alteration. Abstract:Geothermal energy has become an emerging resource with both large reserves and environmental friendliness and is playing an increasingly important role in the current energy transition progress. In this paper, a thermodynamically consistent NVT flash model is developed to consider the effect of hydrogen bond on the phase equilibrium states of multi-component fluid to resolve the challenges of the special thermodynamic characteristic of water as the main working fluid. In order to provide practical suggestions to the industry, a number of possible effects have been investigated on the phase equilibrium states, including the hydrogen bond, environmental temperature, and fluid compositions. The calculated phase stability and phase splitting results can provide thermodynamic foundations for the establishment of the multi-component multi-phase flow model and also help optimize the development process to control the phase transitions for a number of engineering purposes.

Abstract:A variety of salt fluids (e.g., aqueous Li2SO4, ZnSO4 and UO2SO4 fluid) were observed to separate into a heavy salt-rich fluid (F1) and a light salt-depleted fluid (F2) when heated to appropriate temperatures. The F1–F2 immiscibility (FFI) likely provides an efficient pathway for hydrothermal transport and accumulation of certain ore elements and influences the compositional evolution of hydrothermal fluids, as it considerably concentrates these elements into the F1 phase. However, geological studies to date have paid little attention to the occurrence and influence of this kind of fluid immiscibility. The discrepancy may be explained from two perspectives. First, the complex pressure–temperature–composition (P–T–x) conditions of geological fluids may destabilize the FFI or suppress its occurrence. Alternatively, the FFI in geological fluids may be neglected during geologic investigations due to a lack of knowledge. To bridge the gap between experimental research and geological studies, this study aims to reveal more properties of the FFI and establish some geological constraints for discerning the FFI in geological systems. The partitioning behaviors of sulfate (FFI-relevant component) and perchlorate (FFI-irrelevant component) during the FFI and boiling process in the ZnSO4–Zn(ClO4)2–H2O system were quantified using Raman spectroscopic analyses integrated with the mass conservation law. Results show inconsistent partitioning behaviors of SO42− and ClO4− during the FFI; SO42− is highly concentrated into the F1 phase relative to the light F2 phase, while ClO4− partitions almost equally between the two phases. On the contrary, SO42− and ClO4− are concentrated proportionally in the residual liquid with boiling. Accordingly, some possible geological constraints, in addition to microthermometry, are postulated for the identification of the FFI in hydrothermal fluids, including (a) the P–T–x trajectory of the fluid intersecting with the FFI's stability region; (b) fluid inclusions showing divergent contents of FFI-relevant components but consistent concentrations of FFI-irrelevant components. This study sheds new light on the research of the salt-rich fluid and salt-depleted fluid immiscibility in geological systems.

Abstract:In recent years, the advancements in multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC – ICP – MS) technology have significantly enhanced our understanding of the isotopic variations in tungsten (W) and tin (Sn) among natural samples. The application of W isotopic fractionation (δ 186/184 W NIST 3163 ) has emerged in tracing the material cycle associated with solid Earth evolution as an excellent indicator. Also, the findings of Sn isotopic fractionation (e.g. δ 122/118 Sn 3161a ) in cassiterite have achieved initial success in revealing magmatic-hydrothermal processes. However, the mechanisms responsible for variations in W and Sn isotopes in the ore-forming processes remain to be fully addressed, and there is an urgent need to apply the W – Sn isotope systematics to geology (especially for ore deposit geology). In this contribution, the high-precision analytical methods for W and Sn isotopes, the significant variability in isotopic compositions, and the immense functionality of the tracing process are systematically summarized and reviewed. Conclusively, the prospects of the application of W and Sn isotopes in geology are listed, and it is pointed out that it is urgent to introduce W – Sn double isotope systematics into the study of ore deposits, apply the stable isotopic method for tracing the source of ore-forming materials and modelling the evolution of W and Sn isotopes in W – Sn metallogenic system. Focusing on the composition variations of W and Sn isotopes in magmatic-hydrothermal evolution is expected to explore the fractionation mechanism of those isotopes in the mineralization process from multiple perspectives, establishing the evolution model of W and Sn isotopes in the complex W – Sn metallogenic system, which can provide a fresh approach for in-depth understanding of the genesis of W – Sn mineralization, and then facilitating a new perspective for the study of large-scale W – Sn polymetallic mineralization.

Abstract:The behavior of silver in hydrothermal ore-forming systems has been the subject of numerous studies. Equilibrium and Rayleigh-type isotope fractionation of silver during transport- and deposition-related processes in silver-bearing hydrothermal ore-forming systems are investigated experimentally and theoretically in this study. The results of open-system evaporation experiments in a simple Ag+-H2O system show that the transfer kinetics of silver from liquid to vapor follow a second-order kinetic reaction model with activation energy (Ea) values of 131.20±14.63 kJ·mol-1 and 145.38±2.93 kJ·mol-1 in neutral and acidic solutions, respectively. No loss of silver from the solution was observed during surface evaporation, and the rate constant, ka, increased exponentially with temperature above 343 K at ambient pressure. During vapor-liquid separation, the vapor is enriched in 107Ag, whereas the liquid is enriched in 109Ag. The silver isotope fractionation follows a Rayleigh-type fractionation model with αvapor-liquid factors of 0.99936-0.99985 at 373 K under neutral and acidic conditions, respectively, whereas the temperature-dependent equilibrium isotope fractionation follows the relationship, 1000lnαvapor-liquid= -0.0039 × 106/T2 – 0.0037 based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This explains the relatively narrow interval of δ109Ag values (from -0.3 to +0.4‰) analyzed in Ag-bearing veins from hydrothermal ore-deposits. Based on the bond-strength of Ag to the nearest atoms in minerals, the 109Ag enrichment decreases in the order pyrargyrite, argentite, proustite, stephanite, native silver, iodargyrite, chlorargyrite. The equilibrium silver isotope fractionation between fluid and mineral during ore formation can be considerable depending on the temperature, the nature of the silver-bearing mineral deposited, whether or not there is vapor-liquid phase separation, and whether there is reduction of oxidized silver (Ag(+1)) to the reduced form Ag(0). Consequently, the source signatures of δ109Ag are altered significantly by transport- and deposition-related processes during ore formation (e.g., boiling, precipitation and reduction). A new silver isotope-geothermometer is proposed based on the equilibrium silver isotope fractionation between argentite and stephanite. This geothermometer, which employs the relationship 1000lnαargentite-stephanite = 0.0128× 106/T2 + 0.0014, can be used to constrain temperature in silver-bearing hydrothermal systems provided that argentite and stephanite are in equilibrium.

Abstract:Interpreting isotopic signatures documented in natural rocks requires knowledge of equilibrium isotopic fractionation factors. Here, we determine equilibrium Fe isotope fractionation factors between several common rock-forming minerals using a comparative approach involving three independent methods: (i) isotopic analyses of natural minerals from a metapelite from Mt. Moosilauke, New Hampshire, for which equilibration temperature and pressure are well constrained to be near the aluminosilicate triple point (T≃500 °C, P≃4 kbar), (ii) Nuclear Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (NRIXS) measurements of Fe force constants of minerals, and (iii) Density Functional Theory (DFT) ab initio calculations of Fe force constants of minerals.The minerals studied for Fe isotopes include, in increasing order of their β-factors: garnet < ilmenite ≈ fayalite < biotite < tourmaline < muscovite ≈ plagioclase. Some of this ordering is affected by the presence of Fe3+ in the minerals, which tends to form stiffer bonds and be associated with heavy Fe isotope enrichments relative to Fe2+. We are, however, able to assess the magnitude of the effect of the ratio Fe3+/ΣFe on equilibrium fractionation factors, notably on the ilmenite-hematite solid solution. Equilibrium Fe isotopic fractionation factors between garnet, ilmenite, biotite, tourmaline and fayalite are determined. We also report Mg and Ti isotopic compositions of selected Moosilauke minerals that allow us to better constrain the equilibrium fractionation factors for garnet-biotite-tourmaline (Mg isotopes) and biotite-ilmenite (Ti isotopes).We show how the newly determined equilibrium fractionation factors can be used to address diverse problems in Earth and planetary sciences, notably (i) Fe and Mg isotopic fractionation during anatexis, (ii) Fe isotopic fractionation in lunar ilmenite, and (iii) Ti isotopic fractionation during fluvial transport of minerals.

Abstract:Understanding the stable strontium isotope fractionation between seawater and ferromanganese crusts/nodules is crucial for reconstructing seawater Sr isotopic history. This study explores stable Sr isotope fractionation during adsorption to manganese oxides, as preliminary experiments indicated their higher Sr adsorption capacity compared to iron oxides. We observed that equilibrium in concentration and isotopic composition can be achieved within a day. The lighter isotope (86Sr) is preferentially adsorbed, with the fractionation extent showing no significant change with respect to reaction time, pH, or Sr concentration under low ionic strength conditions (−0.14‰). Equilibrium fractionation processes, rather than Rayleigh fractionation, more accurately represent the isotopic composition trends of dissolved and adsorbed Sr. Experiments in synthetic seawater demonstrated greater Sr isotope fractionation (−0.20‰) compared to low ionic‐strength solutions. This fractionation during adsorption by manganese oxides in synthetic seawater is consistent with the isotopic discrepancy between seawater and ferromanganese nodules, suggesting that Mn oxide adsorption is the primary mechanism for Sr accumulation in ferromanganese deposits. These results imply that ferromanganese deposit Sr isotopic compositions could be proxies for reconstructing seawater Sr isotopic history, which is influenced by carbonate burial and continental weathering, reflecting the global carbon cycle changes.

Abstract:Lu-Hf isotopic system in zircon is a powerful and widely used geochemical tracer in studying petrogenesis of magmatic rocks and crustal evolution, assuming that zircon Hf isotopes can represent initial Hf isotopes of their parental whole rock. However, this assumption may not always be valid. Disequilibrium partial melting of continental crust would preferentially melt out non-zircon minerals with high time-integrated Lu/Hf ratios and generate partial melts with Hf isotope compositions that are more radiogenic than those of its magma source. Dissolution experiments (with hotplate, bomb and sintering procedures) of zircon-bearing samples demonstrate this disequilibrium effect where partial dissolution yielded variable and more radiogenic Hf isotope compositions than fully dissolved samples. A case study from the Neoproterozoic Jiuling batholith in southern China shows that about half of the investigated samples show decoupled Hf isotopes between zircons and the bulk rocks. This decoupling could reflect complex and prolonged magmatic processes, such as crustal assimilation, magma mixing, and disequilibrium melting, which are consistent with the wide temperature spectrum from similar to 630 degrees C to similar to 900 degrees C by Ti-in-zircon thermometer. We suggest that magmatic zircons may only record the Hf isotopic composition of their surrounding melt during crystallization and it is uncertain whether their Hf isotopic compositions can represent the primary Hf isotopic compositions of the bulk magmas. In this regard, using zircon Hf isotopic compositions to trace crustal evolution may be biased since most of these could be originally from disequilibrium partial melts.
