Abstract:Discontinuity orientation and its probability distribution become important parameters to understand rock mass characteristic and need to be properly studied in modern rock mass engineering (Chen et al. 2005). Conventional method of orientation measurement with compass is of heavy labor and low efficiency. For this situation, Domestic and overseas scholars made broad study on rapid obtaining discontinuity orientation recently, put forward many methods of obtaining orientation based on digital close range photogrammetry (DCRP), 3D Lidar and so on. For example, discontinuity data obtained with digital vidicon was interpreted (Wu et al. 2003). Discontinuity image identifying based on digital photography was mainly discussed (Fan & Li 2005). Rapid slope logging and discontinuity parameter measuring with 3D Lidar in high steep slope was studied (Dong & Huang 2006). Discontinuity mapping by using SIROJOINT in highwall was discussed (Roberts & Poropat 2000). The theories and methods were mainly discussed in these papers, but lack of systemic analysis and report for orientation precision. For orientation obtained with DCRP in the rock slope engineering of Baolilinyu village in Guangzhou, precision analysis on the basis of error theory was introduced in this paper. This will make people have quantitative cognition about precision of orientation obtained with DCRP. Orientation precision was studied under different image processing methods, photograph distances, camera resolutions and control point distributions. The study shows that compared with compass measuring data, orientation obtained with DCRP fundamentally meets the requirement (the fitting RMS error below 6◦).
