Abstract:There are innumerous studies on customers’ purchase behaviour in today’s times. Not only traditional ways of purchases, but even online purchase behaviour has got a lot of traction in researches worldwide. But the fallacy of most researches is that they work on the basic assumption that all customers’ no matter what form of shopping they do usually behave rationally. Researchers usually try to explain and study consumer behaviour with the aide of either Theory of Reasoned Action or Value Based Behavioural Approach for both online and offline shopping. However, consumers nowadays are not only rational in their purchase decision but more and more consumers tend towards making irrational purchase decisions. Their irrational purchase decisions are being influenced by impulse, conspicuous consumption and force of habit. In recent studies it’s been found that more and more consumers of current generation are getting addicted to playing online mobile games. Online mobile games nowadays are free to play but have in-game objects / items that need to be purchased for actually playing the game in its optimal level. This paper aims to study the factors both rational and irrational that impact in-game purchases in mobile games and how they are associated with a consumers purchase behaviour. This study was conducted across major cities of the state of West Bengal in India. The survey occurred between the time-period of 1st August 2018 to 1st October 2018 wherein 510 total responses were received. Out of which 26 surveys were incomplete hence discarded and another 17 surveys had issues with their answers and found dubious and hence discarded. Therefore a total of 467 responses were collected from mobile game users of West Bengal through survey questionnaires. The study employed regression analysis which showcased the in-game purchase behaviour was influenced by both rational factors such as intention to purchase as well as irrational factors such as impulse, conspicuousness, habit etc.
