Abstract:Nanotechnology, along with related concepts such as nanomaterials, nanostructures and nanoparticles, has become a priority area for scientific research and technological development. Nanotechnology, i.e., the creation and utilization of materials and devices at nanometer scale, already has multiple applications in electronics and other fields. However, the greatest expectations are for its application in biotechnology and health, with the direct impact these could have on the quality of health in future societies. The emerging discipline of nanomedicine brings nanotechnology and medicine together in order to develop novel therapies and improve existing treatments. In nanomedicine, atoms and molecules are manipulated to produce nanostructures of the same size as biomolecules for interaction with human cells. This procedure offers a range of new solutions for diagnoses and "smart" treatments by stimulating the body's own repair mechanisms. It will enhance the early diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and cardiovascular diseases. Preventive medicine may then become a reality.

Abstract:Application of nanomaterials in biomedicine has an important place in research of nanomaterials. Nanomedical approaches are a major transforming factor in medical diagnosis and therapies. The great advantages of using nanomaterials in biomedical areas lies in their ability to operate on the same small scale as all the intimate biochemical functions involved in the growth, development and ageing of the human body. Achieving full potential of nanomedicine may be years of even decades away, however, potential advances in drug delivery, diagnosis, and development of nanotechnology-related drugs start to change the landscape of medicine. One of the main issues is certainly related to long-term safety of nanomaterials, both developed for in vitro and in vivo applications.

Abstract:Tremendous developments in nanotechnology have revolutionized the impact of nanoparticles (NPs) in the scientific community and, more recently, in society. Nanomaterials are by their definition materials that have at least one dimension in range of 1 to 100 nm. Nanoparticles are found in many types of different technological and scientific applications and innovations, from delicate electronics to state-of-the-art medical treatments. Medicine has recognized the importance of polymer materials coated with NPs and utilizes them widely thanks to their excellent physical, chemical, antibacterial, antimicrobial, and protective properties. Emphasis is given to their biomedical application, as the nanoscale structures are in the range of many biological molecules. Through this, they can achieve many important features such as targeted drug delivery, imaging, photo thermal therapy, and sensors. Moreover, by manipulating in a "nano-scale" range, their characteristic can be modified in order to obtain the desired properties needed in particular biomedical fields, such as electronic, optical, surface plasmon resonance, and physic-chemical features.

Abstract:After the introduction of nanotechnology as a new science, there were tremendous changes in its application. Nanomaterials rapidly penetrate a diverse area of biomedicine and pharmaceutical research, including drug development, drug delivery, tissue engineering and medicinal chemistry. Its versatile use helps in alleviating complex difficulties faced with drug administration and absorption, controlled release, targeted delivery and cellular uptake. Due to their distinctive physico-chemical properties and ability to form various solid-state formulations, they find increased use in the preparation of new drug formulations, imaging techniques and particularly in medicinal chemistry as catalysts for the sensitive determination of drugs and other biologically active compounds. The role of nanomaterials as catalysts in the preparation of substances with pharmacological properties, the preparation of sensors, or the degradation and removal of medicinal compounds polluting the environment is undeniable.

Abstract:Nanomaterials, that is, materials made up of individual units between 1 and 100 nanometers, have lately involved a lot of attention since they offer a lot of potential in many fields, including pharmacy and biomedicine, owed to their exceptional physicochemical properties arising from their high surface area and nanoscale size. Smart engineering of nanostructures through appropriate surface or bulk functionalization endows them with multifunctional capabilities, opening up new possibilities in the biomedical field such as biosensing, drug delivery, imaging, medical implants, cancer treatment and tissue engineering. This article highlights up‐to‐date research in nanomaterials functionalization for biomedical applications. A summary of the different types of nanomaterials and the surface functionalization strategies is provided. Besides, the use of nanomaterials in diagnostic imaging, drug/gene delivery, regenerative medicine, cancer treatment and medical implants is reviewed. Finally, conclusions and future perspectives are provided.

Abstract:Nanotehnology applied to biomedicine has an important place in research of nanomaterials. Size of nanomaterials particles is similar to the size of biological molecules and structures, a conclusion can be drawn that the application of nanomaterials in vivo and in vitro biomedical researches is possible. This paper is a short overview of medical applications of different nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes, graphene, quantum dots, nanocapsules etc. The main nanocarriers systems such as liposomes, micelles and dendrimers also will be presented. Today, we are witnessing the great boom of magnetic particles as essential components in several areas of medical practice. The great advantages of using nanomaterials in biomedical areas lies in their ability to operate on the same small scale as all the intimate biochemical functions involved in the growth, development and ageing of the human body. Nano-pharamceuticals reveal enormous potential in drug delivery as carrier for spatial and temporal delivery of bioactive components and diagnostics. Additionally, it also provides smart materials for tissue engineering. This discipline is now well-established for drug delivery, diagnostics, prognostic and treatment of diseases through its nanoengineered tools.

Abstract:Biomedical applications of nanomaterials have received considerable attention and interest from many researchers over the past decade due to the key role they can play in enhancing public health. Different types of nanomaterials possess both diagnostic and therapeutic potential owing to their outstanding properties compared to their bulk counterparts. Herein, we present, analyze and provide significant insights and recent advances about the promising biomedical applications of nanoparticles including bioimaging of biological environments and its role as a significant tool for early detection of many diseases with respect to traditional means, explaining their types and limitations. In addition, different types of nanoparticles acting as effective bio-sensors and detectors of our body have been analyzed. Moreover, the therapeutic potential of different types of nanoparticles and their attractive antimicrobial effects allowing them to act as powerful and new drug substitutes against multi-drug resistant bacteria and pathogenic fungi. Finally, we introduce some nanoparticles as powerful antioxidants and promising candidates in cancer therapeutics. We conclude that this review can give up-to-date information about various biomedical applications of nanoparticles and will be of great value and interest to researchers and scientists of materials science, biology, chemistry, and medicine.

Abstract:The design and use of materials in the nanoscale size range for addressing medical and health-related issues continues to receive increasing interest. Research in nanomedicine spans a multitude of areas, including drug delivery, vaccine development, antibacterial, diagnosis and imaging tools, wearable devices, implants, high-throughput screening platforms, etc. using biological, nonbiological, biomimetic, or hybrid materials. Many of these developments are starting to be translated into viable clinical products. Here, we provide an overview of recent developments in nanomedicine and highlight the current challenges and upcoming opportunities for the field and translation to the clinic.

Abstract:The application of nanotechnology in the field of life sciences offers the potential to study biological systems with unprecedented resolution at the nanoscale, and to solve medical problems that affect millions of patients across the globe. Significant progress has been achieved over the past 2–3 decades leading to, for example, the approval of nanoformulations for delivering drugs to tumors and other diseased sites [1]. To date, nearly 30 nanotechnology-based products have been approved for clinical use, focused mainly on liposomal formulations and stealth polymer–drug conjugates. In addition to therapeutic nanoparticles for drug delivery, important topics include: (i) biomimetic nano- or micro-structured materials for tissue engineering and regenerative medical applications, (ii) nanobiosensors, particularly those lab-on-chip-based systems for disease diagnosis at the point of care, (iii) nano-probes for in vivo sensing/imaging, cell tracking and monitoring disease pathogenesis or therapy and (iv) nanotechnology-based tools that accelerate scientific discovery and elucidation of basic biology [2, 3]. Some of the exciting emerging topics involve the development of multifunctional nanoparticles that can fulfil two or more of the above-mentioned functions (e.g. theranostics that include diagnostics and therapy) [4] and the use of nano-sized materials to monitor and manipulate the fate of transplanted (stem) cells and the microenvironments where they reside in vivo [5, 6]. For example, we recently reported that nano-sized aptamer sensors that are engineered on the surface of stem cells could be delivered by cells to target niches in the body where they can potentially report the cellular functions and cell–cell communication in real-time [7]. Moreover, drug-carrying nano- or micro-particles can be conjugated with therapeutic cells prior to transplantation to enable the control of the fate and therapeutic function of cells in a sustained manner in vivo [8, 9]. This special issue highlights some of the most recent advances in the exciting field of bioengineering nanotechnology. The themes covered in this issue include nanoparticle systems for tracking transplanted stem cells using a variety of imaging modalities, synthesis of smart nanomaterials for drug delivery and targeting specific intracellular organalles, elucidating how physical cues provided by nano- or micro-fabricated scaffolds impact cell phenotype, novel nanocomposite materials for biosensing, biomimetic assembly of nanostructures for studying molecular interactions, and high content analysis for assessing nanotoxicity. We believe next-generation nanomaterials that are currently under development will transform our understanding of biological mechanisms, and revolutionize clinical practice through ushering in new diagnostics and therapeutic paradigms. As nanotechnology becomes increasingly accessible to research laboratories, significant advances leading to paradigm shifts in basic biology and medicine will require connecting the right technology to the right problem and ensuring that the most pertinent criteria are correctly identified and addressed. Abstract:Magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) are emerging as an important class of biomedical functional nanomaterials in areas such as hyperthermia, drug release, tissue engineering, theranostic, and lab-on-a-chip, due to their exclusive chemical and physical properties. Although some works can be found reviewing the main application of magnetic NPs in the area of biomedical engineering, recent and intense progress on magnetic nanoparticle research, from synthesis to surface functionalization strategies, demands for a work that includes, summarizes, and debates current directions and ongoing advancements in this research field. Thus, the present work addresses the structure, synthesis, properties, and the incorporation of magnetic NPs in nanocomposites, highlighting the most relevant effects of the synthesis on the magnetic and structural properties of the magnetic NPs and how these effects limit their utilization in the biomedical area. Furthermore, this review next focuses on the application of magnetic NPs on the biomedical field. Finally, a discussion of the main challenges and an outlook of the future developments in the use of magnetic NPs for advanced biomedical applications are critically provided.
