Abstract:As one of the most promising non-noble metal electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), previous investigations on Fe-N-C materials have mainly focused on the innovation of synthetic methods, identification of active sites, and structure optimization, but the intrinsic properties of carbon supports used to anchor Fe-N-x active sites have often been neglected. Herein, graphene oxide (GO) and reduced GO (rGO) are used as support models for heteroatom doping to prepare Fe-N-C catalysts. The obvious and easily distinguishable defects and the content of oxygen-containing functional groups in GO and rGO directly determined the doping content, structure type, and coordination environment of N and Fe. Notably, through analysis of the surface potential as a common parameter measured by Kelvin probe force microscopy, local work functions of these graphene-based catalysts at the nanoscale and their statistical averages were used to study the distribution of active sites and their association with ORR kinetics. This insight into the influence of carbon support structure properties on active sites and the work function-ORR performance relationship may provide guidance for exploring the origin of ORR activity and designing better non-noble metal electrocatalysts.
Understanding the High Activity of Fe-N-C Electrocatalysts in Oxygen Reduction: Fe/Fe3C Nanoparticles Boost the Activity of Fe-N(x).

Abstract:Understanding the origin of high activity of Fe-N-C electrocatalysts in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is critical but still challenging for developing efficient sustainable nonprecious metal catalysts in fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Herein, we developed a new highly active Fe-N-C ORR catalyst containing Fe-N(x) coordination sites and Fe/Fe3C nanocrystals (Fe@C-FeNC), and revealed the origin of its activity by intensively investigating the composition and the structure of the catalyst and their correlations with the electrochemical performance. The detailed analyses unambiguously confirmed the coexistence of Fe/Fe3C nanocrystals and Fe-N(x) in the best catalyst. A series of designed experiments disclosed that (1) N-doped carbon substrate, Fe/Fe3C nanocrystals or Fe-N(x) themselves did not deliver the high activity; (2) the catalysts with both Fe/Fe3C nanocrystals and Fe-N(x) exhibited the high activity; (3) the higher content of Fe-N(x) gave the higher activity; (4) the removal of Fe/Fe3C nanocrystals severely degraded the activity; (5) the blocking of Fe-N(x) downgraded the activity and the recovery of the blocked Fe-N(x) recovered the activity. These facts supported that the high ORR activity of the Fe@C-FeNC electrocatalysts should be ascribed to that Fe/Fe3C nanocrystals boost the activity of Fe-N(x). The coexistence of high content of Fe-N(x) and sufficient metallic iron nanoparticles is essential for the high ORR activity. DFT calculation corroborated this conclusion by indicating that the interaction between metallic iron and Fe-N4 coordination structure favored the adsorption of oxygen molecule. These new findings open an avenue for the rational design and bottom-up synthesis of low-cost highly active ORR electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Abstract Single-atom Fe-N-C catalysts has attracted widespread attentions in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, the origin of ORR activity on Fe-N-C catalysts is still unclear, which hinder the further improvement of Fe-N-C catalysts. Herein, we provide a model to understand the ORR activity of Fe-N 4 site from the spatial structure and energy level of the frontier orbitals by density functional theory calculations. Taking the regulation of divacancy defects on Fe-N 4 site ORR activity as examples, we demonstrate that the hybridization between Fe 3 dz 2 , 3 dyz (3 dxz ) and O 2 π* orbitals is the origin of Fe-N 4 ORR activity. We found that the Fe–O bond length, the d-band center gap of spin states, the magnetic moment of Fe site and *O 2 as descriptors can accurately predict the ORR activity of Fe-N 4 site. Furthermore, these descriptors and ORR activity of Fe-N 4 site are mainly distributed in two regions with obvious difference, which greatly relate to the height of Fe 3 d projected orbital in the Z direction. This work provides a new insight into the ORR activity of single-atom M-N-C catalysts.

Abstract:The substantial advances of non-precious Fe-N-C materials with both high activity and stability to replace platinum-based catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells remain a great challenge, since their intrinsic active site design and contributing microstructure exploration are still unclear. Herein, we propose a solid-phase thermal migration strategy to synthesize Fe, N co-doped nanocarbons with a short nanotubular structure, using ferrocene as Fe source and polyaniline (PANI) as N-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs) source. In acidic and alkaline environments, the thermally activated Fe-N-C exhibits efficient ORR performance, and half-wave potential is 30 mV higher than a commercial Pt/C (JM, 20 wt% Pt) in alkaline medium and only 100 mV less than the Pt/C in acidic media. Impressively, the catalyst used in zinc-air battery exhibits an outstanding power density of 144.74 mW·cm −2 , higher than the one assembled by the Pt/C (125.67 mW·cm −2 ). Combining experimental and density functional theory (DFT) calculation results, the superior ORR activity should be attributed to the formation of the efficient off-plane Fe-pyridinic-N 4 species at end of the nanotubes. More important, these zigzag-type Fe-pyridinic-N 4 sites at the end regions serve as the main active sites, leading to a higher ORR activity. This work opens a door to clarify the active catalytic site types and the contributing microregions of the Fe-N-C catalysts, providing ideas for designing non-noble metal catalysts with curved surfaces and rich edge structures.

Abstract:Due to highly heterogeneity of pyrolyzed transition metal-nitrogen-carbon (M-N-C) catalyst, elucidating mechanisms of roles of metal in enhancing oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is challenging. Here, we design a surface structurally-defined precursor with Fe-N coordination to atomically disperse iron (Fe) on N-doped carbon hollow microspheres surface (NHMs@Fe) by pyrolysis of the precursor. The obtained NHMs@Fe catalyst exhibits a high ORR activity comparable to commercial Pt/C catalyst. The detailed analyses confirmed that (i) Fe atoms are uniformly distributed on N-poor carbon surface, and (ii) the designed Fe-Nx coordination are destroyed and don't convert into Fe-Nx active sites after thermal activation. We find that single Fe atoms produced by carbothermal reduction are directly trapped into adjacent carbon vacancies generated by the removal of N to create active sites for ORR. This work not only reveals the origin of activity of Fe-N-C catalyst but also opens an avenue for preparation of high-performance M-N-C catalysts.

Abstract:While FeN4 species are widely suggested as the active sites of noble-metal-free Fe–N–C oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts, the ORR mechanism, particularly the rate-determining steps (RDSs) at the Fe centers, and the likely contribution of co-existed C–N active site remain disputed. Moreover, the dynamic structures of the FeN4 active sites during ORR electrocatalysis also remain elusive. By in situ (isotope-labeled) Raman spectroscopy of molecular Fe phthalocyanine (FePc) model catalysts and pyrolyzed Fe–N–C catalysts, we achieve direct, simultaneous spectral identification of the ORR intermediates/RDSs at different active sites under different pH conditions, from which their intrinsic activities and ORR mechanisms can be quantitatively decoupled. Besides the single-atomic Fe–N x site, two kinds of C–N sites were pinpointed and clarified as separate active sites in pyrolyzed Fe–N–C catalysts, showing different ORR intermediates (*O2 – and *OOH) and RDSs. Furthermore, from the FePc model catalyst, we reveal a pH-dependent structural switching of the FeN4 between planar and non-planar structures during ORR electrocatalysis, which provides important insights into their pH-dependent ORR activity (RDS) and stability.

Abstract:Over recent years, catalytic materials of Fe-N-C species have been recognized being active for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, the identification of active site remains challenging as it generally involves a pyrolysis process and mixed components being obtained. Herein Fe3C/C and Fe2N/C samples were synthesized by temperature programmed reduction of Fe precursors in 15% CH4/H2 and pure NH3, respectively. By acid leaching of Fe2N/C sample, only single sites of FeN4 species were presented, providing an ideal model for identification of catalytic functions of the single sites of FeN4 in ORR. A correlation was conducted between the concentration of FeIIN4 in low spin state by Mössbauer spectra and the kinetic current density at 0.8 V in alkaline media, and such a structure-performance correlation assures the catalytic roles of low spin FeIIN4 species as highly active sites for the ORR.

Abstract:Developing highly efficient, low-cost oxygen reduction catalysts, especially in acidic medium, is of significance toward fuel cell commercialization. Although pyrolyzed Fe-N-C catalysts have been regarded as alternatives to platinum based catalytic materials, further improvement requires precise control of the Fe-N-x structure at the molecular level and a comprehensive understanding of catalytic site structure and the ORR mechanism on these materials. In this report, we present a microporous metal-organic-framework-confined strategy toward the preferable formation of single-atom dispersed catalysts. The onset potential for Fe-N-C is 0.92 V, comparable to that of Pt/C and outperforming most noble-metal-free catalysts ever reported. A high-spin Fe3+-N-4 configuration is revealed by the Fe-57 Mossbauer spectrum and X-ray absorption spectroscopy for Fe L-edge, which will convert to Fe2+-N-4 at low potential. The in situ reduced Fe2+-N-4 moiety from high-spin O-x-Fe3+-N-4 contributes to most of the ORR activity due to its high turnover frequency (TOF) of ca. 1.71 e s(-1) sites(-1).

Abstract:Fe‐N‐C catalysts represent very promising cathode catalysts for polymer electrolyte fuel cells, owing to their outstanding activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), especially in alkaline media. In this review, we summarize recent advances in the design and synthesis of Fe‐N‐C catalysts rich in highly dispersed FeN x active sites. Special emphasis is placed on emerging strategies for tuning the electronic structure of the Fe atoms to enhance the ORR activity, and also maximizing the surface concentration of FeN x sites that are catalytically accessible during ORR. While great progress has been made over the past 5 years in the development of Fe‐N‐C catalyst for ORR, significant technical obstacles still need to be overcome to enable the large‐scale application of Fe‐N‐C materials as cathode catalysts in real‐world fuel cells. The advancement of Fe‐N‐C catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction is summarized in two aspects, including (1) discovering advanced FeN x sites with the tuned electronic structure of the Fe atoms to enhance the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity, and (2) developing effective strategies in maximizing the surface concentration of FeN x sites that are catalytically accessible during ORR.

Abstract:Detailed understanding of the nature of the active centers in non-precious-metal-based electrocatalyst, and their role in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) mechanistic pathways will have a profound effect on successful commercialization of emission-free energy devices such as fuel cells. Recently, using pyrolyzed model structures of iron porphyrins, we have demonstrated that a covalent integration of the Fe-N x sites into π-conjugated carbon basal plane modifies electron donating/withdrawing capability of the carbonaceous ligand, consequently improving ORR activity. Here, we employ a combination of in situ X-ray spectroscopy and electrochemical methods to identify the various structural and functional forms of the active centers in non-heme Fe/N/C catalysts. Both methods corroboratively confirm the single site 2e- × 2e- mechanism in alkaline media on the primary Fe2+-N4 centers and the dual-site 2e- × 2e- mechanism in acid media with the significant role of the surface bound coexisting Fe/Fe x O y nanoparticles (NPs) as the secondary active sites.

Abstract:Porous iron–nitrogen-doped carbons (FeNC) offer a great platform for construction of cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts in fuel cells. However, challenges still remain regarding with the collapse of carbon-skeleton during pyrolysis, uneven distribution of active sites and aggregation of metal atoms. In this work, we synthesized Fe, N co-doped conjugated microporous polymer (FeN-CMP) through a facile bottom-up strategy using 1,3,5-triethynylbenzene and iron-chelated 3,8-dibromo-1,10-phenanthroline as monomers, ensuring the uniform coordination of N with Fe element in network. Then, the resulting FeN-CMP was treated by pyrolysis without structural collapse to obtain porous FeNC electrocatalyst for ORR. The most active catalyst was fabricated under 900 °C, which exhibits remarkable ORR activity in alkaline medium with half-wave potential of 0.796 V (18 mV and 105 mV positive deviation from the commercial Pt/C catalyst and post-doping catalyst), high selectivity with nearly 4e - transfer process and excellent methanol tolerance. Our study first developed porous FeNC electrocatalysts derived from Fe, N -anchoring CMPs based on pre-functionalization of monomers, which exhibits great potential as an alternative to commercial Pt/C catalyst for ORR, and provides a feasible strategy of developing multi-atoms doping catalysts for energy storage and conversion as well as heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:Searching for high-efficient, good long-term stability, and low-cost electrocatalysts toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is highly desirable for the development of sustainable energy conversion devices. Iron–nitrogen doped carbon (Fe–N/C) catalysts have been recognized as the most promising candidates for traditional Pt-based catalysts that benefit from their high activity, excellent anti-poisoning ability, and inexpensiveness. Here, a super-dispersed and high-performance Fe–N/C catalyst was derived from chemically Fe-doped zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) by directly bonding Fe ions to imidazolate ligands within 3D frameworks. It produced a series of catalysts, whose sizes could be tuned in the range from 62 to over 473 nm in diameter. After rationally regulating the component and heating treatment, the best ORR activity was measured for the catalyst with a size of 105 nm, which was obtained when the Fe3+/Zn2+ molar ratio was 0.05 and carbonization temperature was 900 °C. It exhibited a high onset potential (Eonset = 0.99 V) and half-wave potential (E1/2 = 0.885 V) compared with a commercial 20% Pt/C catalyst (Eonset = 0.10 V, E1/2 = 0.861 V) as well as much better durability and methanol resistance in an alkaline electrolyte.

Synthesis of hierarchically structured Fe3C/CNTs composites in a FeNC matrix for use as efficient ORR electrocatalysts

Abstract:Fe–N–C has a high number of FeN x active sites and has thus been regarded as a high-performance oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst, and combining Fe 3 C with Fe–N–C typically boosts ORR activity. However, the catalytic mechanism remains unknown, limiting further research and development. In this study, a precipitation-solvothermal process was used in conjunction with pyrolysis to produce a series of Fe–N–C catalysts derived from a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) that was composited with Fe 3 C. The prepared catalysts had a multiscale structure of ZIF-like carbon particles and rod-like structures, as well as bamboo-like carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon layers wrapped with Fe 3 C particles while a series of studies revealed the origin of the rod-like structures and Fe 3 C phase. The hierarchical structure was beneficial to the enhanced electrocatalytic performance of catalysts for ORR. The optimal sample had the highest half-wave potential of 0.878 V vs. RHE, which was higher than that of commercial Pt/C (0.861 V vs. RHE). The ECSA of the optimal sample was 1.08 cm 2 μg −1 , with an electron transfer number close to 4, and functioning kinetics. The optimal sample exhibited high durability and methanol tolerance for the ORR. Finally, blocking different Fe active sites with coordination ions demonstrated that Fe( II ) was the main active site, indicating that Fe 3 C primarily served as a cocatalyst to optimize the electron structure of Fe–N–C, thereby synergistically improving the ORR activity.

Abstract:Fe-N-C materials exhibit excellent activity and stability for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), as one of the most promising candidates to replace commercial Pt/C catalysts. However, it is challenging to unravel features of the superior ORR activity originating from Fe-N-C materials. In this work, the electronic and geometric structures of the isolated Fe-N-C sites and their correlations with the ORR performance are investigated by varying the secondary thermal activation temperature of a rationally designed NC-supported Fe single-atom catalyst (SAC). The systematic analyses demonstrate the significant role of coordinated atoms of SA and metallic Fe nanoparticles (NPs) in altering the electronic structure of isolated Fe-N-C sites. Meanwhile, strong interaction between isolated Fe-N-C sites and adjacent Fe NPs can change the geometric structure of isolated Fe-N-C sites. Theoretical calculations reveal that optimal regulation of the electronic and geometric structure of isolated Fe-N-C sites by the co-existence of Fe NPs narrows the energy barriers of the rate-limiting steps of ORR, resulting in outstanding ORR performance. This work not only provides the fundamental understanding of the underlying structure-activity relationship, but also sheds light on designing efficient Fe-N-C catalysts.

Abstract:Developing efficient and low-cost defective carbon-based catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is essential to metal-air batteries and fuel cells. Active sites engineering toward these catalysts is highly desirable but challenging to realize boosted catalytic performance. Herein, a sandwich-like confinement route to achieve the controllable regulation of active sites for carbon-based catalysts is reported. In particular, three distinct catalysts including metal-free N-doped carbon (NC), single Co atoms dispersed NC (Co-N-C), and Co nanoparticles-contained Co-N-C (Co/Co-N-C) are controllably realized and clearly identified by synchrotron radiation-based X-ray spectroscopy. Electrochemical measurements suggest that the Co/Co-N-C catalyst delivers optimized ORR performance due to the rich Co-Nx active sites and their synergistic effect with metallic Co nanoparticles. This work provides deep insight for rationally designing efficient ORR catalyst based on active sites engineering.

Abstract:As an alternative energy, hydrogen can be converted into electrical energy via direct electrochemical conversion in fuel cells. One important drawback of full cells is the sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) promoted by the high-loading of platinum-group-metal (PGM) electrocatalysts. Fe-N-C family has been received extensive attention because of its low cost, long service life and high oxygen reduction reaction activity in recent years. In order to further enhance the ORR activity, the synthesis method, morphology regulation and catalytic mechanism of the active sites in Fe-N-C catalysts are investigated. This paper reviews the research progress of Fe-N-C from nanoparticles to single atoms. The structure-activity relationship and catalytic mechanism of the catalyst are studied and discussed, which provide a guidance for rational design of the catalyst, so as to promote the more reasonable design of Fe-N-C materials.

Asymmetric Coordination Regulating D‐orbital Spin‐electron Filling in Single‐atom Iron Catalyst for Efficient Oxygen Reduction

Abstract:The single-atom Fe-N-C catalyst has shown great promise for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), yet the intrinsic activity is not satisfactory. There is a pressing need to gain a deeper understanding of the charge configuration of the Fe-N-C catalyst and to develop rational modulation strategies. Herein, we have prepared a single-atom Fe catalyst with the co-coordination of N and O (denoted as Fe-N/O-C) and adjacent defect, proposing a strategy to optimize the d-orbital spin-electron filling of Fe sites by fine-tuning the first coordination shell. The Fe-N/O-C exhibits significantly better ORR activity compared to its Fe-N-C counterpart and commercial Pt/C, with a much more positive half-wave potential (0.927 V) and higher kinetic current density. Moreover, using the Fe-N/O-C catalyst, the Zn-air battery and proton exchange membrane fuel cell achieve peak power densities of up to 490 and 1179 mW cm-2, respectively. Theoretical studies and in situ electrochemical Raman spectroscopy reveal that Fe-N/O-C undergoes charge redistribution and negative shifting of the d-band center compared to Fe-N-C, thus optimizing the adsorption free energy of ORR intermediates. This work demonstrates the feasibility of introducing an asymmetric first coordination shell for single-atom catalysts and provides a new optimization direction for their practical application.

Abstract:Atomically dispersed iron and nitrogen co‐doped carbon materials (Fe‐N‐C) represent promising non‐precious metal catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), offering potential alternatives to noble metal‐based benchmarks. In our study, we investigated the influence of phosphorus doping on the catalytic activity of Fe‐N‐C. The experimental research demonstrate that the doping of phosphorus significantly enhances the ORR activity. Specifically, the resulting Fe‐NPC exhibits high metal loading and excellent ORR activity in 0.1 M KOH with an onset potential of 1.00 V and a half‐wave potential of 0.864 V. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations reveal that phosphorus improves the electrocatalytic activity by activating O2 molecules and reducing the energy barrier (the hydrogenation reaction *OH→H2O) of the rate‐determining step. Furthermore, Fe‐NPC exhibits promising application prospects as an air cathode in Zn‐air batteries, delivering a high maximum discharge power density of 180.3 mW cm‐2 and outstanding discharge specific capacity (758.8 mAh g‐1Zn) at a discharge current density of 10 mA cm‐2.

Abstract:Revealing the types of and interplays among multiple active-sites in iron-nitrogen-carbon (Fe-N-C) materials is of great significance for developing high-performance, Fe-based non-precious metal catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In this paper, a single-atom Fe-N-C catalyst is prepared through high-temperature pyrolyzing of melamine foam (MF), iron phthalocyanine (FePc), phthalocyanine (Pc), and zinc (Zn)-salts composite. The catalyst is found to contain a variety of active-sites, including carbon atom next to pyridinic-N (pyridinic-N-C), Fe-N-4 and pore defect. It is shown that MF with high N -content is responsible for the formation of the main pyridinic-N-C sites and in the meantime acts as the self-sacrificed template for framework of the catalyst. The presence of Pc can facilitate the formation of the predominant Fe-N-4 sites, since the interplay between Pc and FePc results in a confinement of Fe-N-4. Zn-salts serve as the pore-forming additives to create sufficient pore defects which can also anchor pyridinic-N-C and Fe-N-4 structures. The results of density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that the multiple active-sites function synergistically to enable high-efficiency ORR electrocatalysis. The optimal Fe-N-C catalyst shows superior ORR activity with a half-wave potential of-0.88 V (vs. RHE), as well as high methanol tolerance and electrochemical stability compared to the commercial carbon -supported platinum (Pt/C) catalyst. Abstract:Fe-N-C electrocatalysts, comprising FeN4 single atom sites immobilized on N-doped carbon supports, offer excellent activity in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), especially in alkaline solution. Herein, we report a simple synthetic strategy for improving the accessibility of FeN4 sites during ORR and simultaneously fine-tuning the microenvironment of FeN4 sites, thus enhancing the ORR activity. Our approach involved a simple one-step pyrolysis of a Fe-containing zeolitic imidazolate framework in the presence of NaCl, yielding a hierarchically porous Fe-N-C electrocatalyst containing tailored FeN4 sites with slightly elongated Fe-N bond distances and reduced Fe charge. The porous carbon structure improved mass transport during ORR, whilst the microenvironment optimized FeN4 sites benefitted the adsorption/desorption of ORR intermediates. Accordingly, the developed electrocatalyst, possessing a high FeN4 site density (9.9 × 1019 sites g-1) and turnover frequency (2.26 s-1), delivered remarkable ORR performance with a low overpotential (a half-wave potential of 0.90 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode) in 0.1 mol L-1 KOH.
