Abstract:For achieving building energy efficiencies and savings, most countries include in their standard regulations either required or recommended minimum airtightness levels. Good building airtightness levels may allow installation of smaller heating and cooling capacities to achieve a better thermal comfort performance and allow prevention of outdoor pollutants, e.g. particulate matters (PMs), from entering indoor spaces. However, indoor air quality (IAQ) may suffer as a result of suppression of indoor pollutants, due to the limited ventilation and infiltration, which could adversely affect indoor occupants’ health and productivity. To counteract these negative effects and meet the IAQ standards, the demand for ventilation may consequently increase, which in turn may cause more energy consumption for the operation of the required ventilation. Hence, there seemingly always exists a paradox as a result of close interactions among ventilation, IAQ, energy efficiency and comfort in buildings. Under this circumstance, new and emerging technologies could create a series of new opportunities and challenges thatmay provide solutions to the existing paradox, which cannot be done in the past, including advanced ventilation systems, optimized system sensing, monitoring and controlling technologies and data analytics, e.g. artificial intelligence for self-adjusted multimode ventilation, fast prediction and design of indoor environment using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), etc. This special issue is to provide a platform to share the research work on the design and operation strategies of new and emerging technologies for advanced building ventilation systems in response to the demand of better indoor environment and energy efficiency. Original and review research papers on the following topics are included:
