Abstract:Background: The skill of reflective writing and emotional drivers of behavior is enhanced by boosting the awareness of one's feelings and emotions. Individuals having characteristic activity of reflection have more emotional quotient (EQ). EQ has more significance than intelligence quotient in personal and professional life. This study is conducted to analyze the impact of reflective writing skills on components of EQ among first-year MBBS students and to find out the impact of reflective writing between components of EQ and different levels of reflective writing skills among first-year MBBS students. Methods: An observational-analytical study was carried out for EQ self-assessment and reflections of first-year MBBS students. A paired t-test was used to check the difference between different segments of EQ. Analysis of reflections was done by modifying the REFLECT rubric method. Results: There was a significant difference in the motivation component between pre and post-test (p-value = 0.013), whereas no significant difference was observed in other components, viz. self-awareness, empathy, self-control, self-confidence, and social competency. The average total scores among EQ domains compared were more at the level of reflection than habitual and introspection levels. Conclusion: Along with intelligence quotient, EQ is critical for students' overall development. The average total scores of EQ were higher among the students who had a higher level of reflection. Developing reflective writing skills had an impact on the motivation component of the EQ of the students within a short duration.
Empathy in Medicine Self and Other in Medical Education: Initial Emotional Intelligence Trend Analysis Widens the Lens Around Empathy and Burnout

Abstract:Abstract Context Integral to emotional intelligence (EI), empathy is frequently studied in medical students. While important, given the implications for patient safety and physician well-being, traits such as self-regard may also affect physician efficacy. Emotional intelligence offers a holistic framework from which to study empathy, allowing it to be explored with coexisting traits and offering opportunities to identify related risk factors. Objective To identify trends in osteopathic medical student EI to help mitigate burnout, with specific attention to empathy and self-regard. Methods Eight hundred eighty-five students at Western University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific from classes 2014-2016 were offered the Emotional Quotient Inventory 2.0 (EQ-i) at the start of school, completion of their second year, and at graduation. Participants completed all 3 inventories, yielding a response rate of 16.3%. Repeated measurement analysis of variance analyses were conducted using SAS software for Windows version 9.3. Results A total of 144 students participated. The total EI score shifted from mean (SD) 100.2 (12.4) at baseline to 96.1 (12.8) midway to 96.8 (13.3) at graduation ( P =.0161) with significant decreases between baseline and midway ( P <.001) and baseline and final administrations ( P <.001). Empathy declined from 103 (13.1) to 99.9 (12.7) to 99.6 (12.6) ( P =.0481) with significant decreases between baseline and midway ( P <.001) and baseline and final administrations ( P <.001). Self-regard declined from 98.6 (14.1) to 95.8 (15.1) to 95.5 (14.7) ( P =.135) with significant decreases between baseline and midway ( P =.0021) and baseline and final administrations ( P <.001). Conclusion This study's findings support further investigation of potential roles played by EI, empathy, and self-regard in physician burnout.

Abstract:THEORY: Empathy is one component of medical student education that may be important to nurture, but there are many potential psychological barriers to empathy, such as student depression, burnout, and low quality of life or wellness behaviors. However, few studies have addressed how positive behaviors such as wellness and spirituality, in combination with these barriers, might affect empathy.HYPOTHESES: We hypothesized a negative relationship between psychological distress and empathy, and a positive relationship between empathy and wellness behaviors. We also hypothesized that openness to others' spirituality would moderate the effects of psychological distress on empathy in medical students.METHOD: This cross-sectional study included 106 medical students in a public medical school in the U.S. Midwest. Mailed questionnaires collected student information on specialty choice and sociodemographics, empathy, spirituality openness, religiosity, wellness, burnout, depression, anxiety, and stress. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis was conducted, with empathy as the dependent variable, psychological distress and all wellness behaviors as predictors, and spirituality openness as a moderator.RESULTS: Specialty choice, burnout, wellness behaviors, spirituality openness, and religiosity were significant independent predictors of empathy. In addition, when added singly, one interaction was significant: Spirituality Openness × Depression. Spirituality openness was related to empathy only in nondepressed students. Empathy of students with higher levels of depression was generally lower and not affected by spirituality openness.CONCLUSIONS: Nondepressed students who reported lower openness to spirituality might benefit most from empathy training, because these students reported the lowest empathy. Highly depressed or disengaged students may require interventions before empathy can be addressed. In addition, burnout was related to lower levels of empathy and wellness was related to higher levels. These provide potential points of intervention for medical schools developing tools to increase medical trainees' empathy levels.

Abstract:BackgroundEmpathy is beneficial for patients and physicians. It facilitates treatment and improves physical and psychosocial outcomes. The therapeutic relevance of empathy emphasizes the need to help medical students develop their empathic abilities. Our study aimed to identify factors which promote or hinder the development and expression of empathy in medical students during the course of their studies.MethodsWe interviewed 24 medical students (six male and six female students in their 6th semester as well as six male and six female students in their final clinical year) using semi-structured interviews. The interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim and analyzed using Braun & Clarke’s thematic analysis.ResultsWe identified four main themes influencing the development and expression of empathy. 1) Course of studies: hands-on-experience, role models, science and theory, and emphasis on the importance of empathy; 2) students: insecurities and lack of routine, increasing professionalism, previous work experiences, professional distance, mood, maturity, and personal level of empathy; 3) patients: “easy” and “difficult” patients including their state of health; and 4) surrounding conditions: time pressure/stress, work environment, and job dissatisfaction.ConclusionsThe development and use of empathy could be promoted by increasing: hands-on-experiences, possibilities to experience the patient’s point of view and offering patient contact early in the curriculum. Students need support in reflecting on their actions, behavior and experiences with patients. Instructors need time and opportunities to reflect on their own communication with and treatment of patients, on their teaching behavior, and on their function as role models for treating patients empathically and preventing stress. Practical experiences should be made less stressful for students. The current changes implemented in some medical school curriculums (e.g., in Germany) seem to go in the right direction by integrating patient contact early on in the curriculum and focusing more on teaching adequate communication and interaction behaviors.

Abstract:Abstract Background Empathy and self-reflection have been studied among medical students, but fewer studies have examined the presence of these attributes among dental students and investigated the correlation between empathy and self-reflection. Methods First-year dental and medical students ( n = 198) beginning their studies at the University of Oulu, Finland in August 2017 participated in this study, which was conducted via an internet-based questionnaire. Data were collected on personal characteristics and scores on Davis’s Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) and Roberts’s Self Reflection and Insight Scale (SRIS). Results Differences in IRI scores between dental and medical students were significant only in male students and in two IRI domains. Mean (SD) scores for male dental and medical students were personal distress, 8.2 (4.0) and 10.7 (3.1) ( p = 0.022); empathic concern, 15.0 (4.0) and 16.9 (3.5) ( p = 0.054). Mean SRIS scores did not differ between sexes or training programs. Positive correlations ( r = − 0.3–0.65) were observed between some empathy and self-reflection subscales. Conclusions A lower degree of empathy was observed among male dental students than in male medical students. A positive correlation between empathy and self-reflection was demonstrated in both study groups and sexes. However, more research in this field is warranted.

Abstract:Introduction: Reflective thinking offers learners insight and encourages deeper understanding by leveraging past experiences. This study explores the impact of reflective writing, a self-assessment tool, on undergraduate medical students. The focus is on training students using author-specific reflection rubrics based on Moon's model. Methods: A mixed-methods study involving 32 volunteered students undertaking an interactive 3-hour session on reflective thinking and writing (RT&W). 19 students submitted reflections, which were self-graded by students and two faculties independently. The perceptions of students were gathered through questionnaires and focus group discussions. The analysis was done using the mean, inter-class correlational coefficient, and thematic analysis. Results: Inter-rater reliability and inter-class correlation coefficient for reflective writing rubric scores was 63.2%, i.e. below the acceptable threshold. Cronbach's Alpha for the learner perception questionnaire was 0.90. The outcome of the student's perception questionnaire recognized the value of reflective writing in terms of professional skills enhancement (4.83±0.39) and improvement after feedback (4.17±0.72). However, satisfaction with overall training was comparatively lower (2.5±0.52). Focus group discussions revealed six themes. Conclusion: Reflective writing enhances the learning outcomes, deepens understanding, and refines judgment. The author-specific reflection rubric, though reliable, warrants empirical validation with a larger and more diverse participant pool. Undergraduate programs should prioritize mastery of reflection and meta-cognitive learning approaches to optimize educational outcomes.

Abstract:Introduction: Empathy is a critical competency for health care providers. However, empathy levels in medical students and residents have been shown to paradoxically decrease during training. Arts and humanities education and reflective practice may reduce burnout and promote empathy during medical school.Methods: We developed and implemented an art education elective for medical students focusing on observation and reflective practice and measured its impact on empathy. Between 2017 and 2022, first-year medical students were offered an annual, 4-week elective led by art educators that featured visualization exercises and discussions on the role of bias and perspective in art interpretation. Curriculum effectiveness and impact on empathy were measured using the validated Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) and self-assessments.Results: One hundred twenty-eight students participated in the elective over a 5-year period; 89 (70%) completed assessments. Students reported improvements in empathic communication, recognition of bias, and observation skills. IRI data demonstrated a significant increase in perspective taking (19.0 vs. 20.2; <i>p</i> < .0125).Discussion: Participation in the elective was associated with self-reported improvements in visual observation, awareness of bias, and empathetic communication. IRI results showed that participants also demonstrated improved perspective taking. Since perspective taking is a cognitive component of empathy, we have provided some empirical evidence that arts education in medical school can promote empathic attitudes and skills.

Abstract:Background: Empathy is an essential core competency for future doctors. Unfortunately, the medical curriculum is infamously known to burn out aspiring doctors, which may potentially lead to a decline in empathy among medical students. This research was planned to understand the evolution of empathic approaches among students across the curriculum using the Interpersonal reactivity index (IRI) as a benchmark at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland - Medical University of Bahrain (RCSI-MUB) and University of Sharjah (UoS). Methods: We adopted a cross-sectional design and administered an online survey to the medical students of RCSI-MUB and UoS using a modified version of the IRI along with its three subscales of empathic concern (EC), perspective taking (PT), and personal distress (PD). To identify intra- and inter-institutional variations in empathy scores, the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was performed separately for each institution and with both institutions combined. A two-way ANOVA was conducted for the comparison between years and institutions. For the subscale analysis of EC, PT, and PD, we used one-way ANOVA for significant differences between years at both institutions. For the gender-effect analysis, t-test was performed to examine the differences in total IRI scores at both institutions combined and at each institution separately. Additionally, an Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was done to identify the influence of gender on empathy scores. Results: A total of 140 students from both institutions participated in this study. We found a fluctuating pattern of empathy scores without a clear trend across the years. The sub-scales of EC, PD, and PT across academic years at both institutions showed significant differences within the EC at RCSI-MUB (p = 0.003). No significant differences were identified across other years from both institutions. There were significant differences between empathy scores from RCSI-MUB and UoS for EC (p = 0.011). Additionally, a pronounced interaction effect between year and institution was observed for PT (p = 0.032). The gender-wise analysis showed that female students had higher empathy scores than males (p = 0.004). The ANCOVA for IRI score results revealed a p-value of 0.023, indicating that gender plays a crucial role in empathy levels among medical students. The ANCOVA results revealed a p-value of 0.022 in the EC subscale. Conclusion: Our study unveiled intricate patterns in empathy development among medical students across years and genders at RCSI-MUB and UoS. These congruences and dissimilarities in empathy scores signal a subjective understanding of empathy by medical students. The disparities in understanding may encourage medical educators to embed empathy in standard medical curricula for better healthcare outcomes.
Introducing reflective narrative for first-year medical students to promote empathy as an integral part of physiology curriculum

Abstract:Guided reflective narratives facilitate deeper understanding and learning. The study was aimed at exploring the scope of guided reflective narratives on early clinical exposure, for first-year medical students, in promoting empathy. Strengths and limitations of the process of reflective narratives were also explored. First-year medical students (n = 150) were exposed to guided reflective narrative writing following each of the three "early clinical exposure" sessions integrated into a physiology curriculum. A feedback on the entire program was obtained through a semistructured questionnaire. The contents of the reflective narratives and feedback on the program were analyzed. Students empathized with the situation and needs of patients and caregivers and could relate to responsibilities and challenges faced by members of health care team. They realized the importance of cooperation from patients and caregivers and work efficiency, communication, behavior, and teamwork from members of healthcare and thereby emerged with the idea of the coordinated effort in patient care. Students opined that reflective narratives made them reflect and empathize with people and situations. Too many narrative writing sessions and hesitation to share their thoughts were some of the suggested limitations. The process led to emergence of a working model for guided reflections to promote empathy. Guided reflective narratives made students reflect and relate to people and situations. While promoting empathy, the reflections also gave them an idea of holistic approach to patient-centered care. Inferences led to a conceptual model for guided reflections to promote empathy among medical students.
Medical Students’ Perspectives on the Factors Affecting Empathy Development During Their Undergraduate Training

Abstract:IntroductionThis study investigated the perspectives of medical students on the factors influencing empathy development during their undergraduate training.MethodologyA descriptive phenomenological approach was used to generate illustrations of empathy development and decline that had educational significance and applicability. Individual online semi-structured interviews were conducted to elicit experiential details from twelve final-year medical students. The interview recordings were transcribed verbatim, and data were analysed employing Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis method.ResultsThe self-reported empathic behavior of medical students seemed to have improved with time in medical school. Students attributed their empathy development to real patient encounters, positive role-modelling by teachers, and attainment of confidence and personal maturity. They identified exams, academic overload, time constraints, personal stresses, negative role models, unconducive learning environments, and lack of formal empathy training as barriers to empathy development.ConclusionMedical institutes should identify and address the barriers to empathy development and encourage the holistic development of medical students. Furthermore, medical educators should model their behavior accurately for their increasing roles and responsibilities and support the students in their empathic expressions with patients.
Effect of a Single-Session Communication Skills Training on Empathy in Medical Students

Abstract:<h3 class="Heading">Objective</h3><p class="Para">Empathy scores have been found to decline over the years spent in medical school. The authors aimed to evaluate the change in empathy levels in medical students following a single-session communication skills training.</p><h3 class="Heading">Methods</h3><p class="Para">Eighty-two second-year medical students were randomized into intervention and control groups. The intervention comprised of a single-session empathetic communication skills training using PowerPoint, video clips, and roleplay. Empathy was assessed using the Jefferson Scale of Empathy-Student version (JSE) at baseline, post-intervention (for the intervention group), and at follow up after 3 weeks.</p><h3 class="Heading">Results</h3><p class="Para">The mean JSE score of the intervention group was 109.7 ± 11.8 at baseline, with significant improvement post-intervention (114.2 ± 10.6, <em class="EmphasisTypeItalic">p</em> = 0.014). However, the score declined at the 3-week follow-up (106.8 ± 11.8). The mean baseline JSE score of the control group was 107.5 ± 12.4, with a decline at follow-up (101.8 ± 16.0). Though both groups showed a decline in the JSE score at follow-up, the decline was significant only for the control group (<em class="EmphasisTypeItalic">p</em> = 0.020), which did not receive the training.</p><h3 class="Heading">Conclusions</h3><p class="Para">The study showed significant improvement immediately, and lower decline at follow-up, in empathy levels following a communication skills training. The findings suggest a need to incorporate a regular training program into the existing medical curriculum, to enhance empathy and prevent its decline over the years.</p>

The role of the emotive, moral, and cognitive components for the prediction of medical students' empathic behavior in an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)

Abstract:Objectives: Investigate whether medical students' emotive abilities, attitudes, and cognitive empathic professional abilities predict empathic behavior in an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). Methods: Linear and multiple regressions were used to test concurrent validity between Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI), Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy (JSPE-S), Situational Judgement Test (SJT-expert-based score (SJT-ES), SJT-theory-based score (SJT-TS)) and empathic behavior in an OSCE measured by Berlin Global Rating (BGR) and Verona Coding Definitions for Emotion Sequences (VR-CoDES). Results: Highest amounts of explained variance of empathic behavior measured by VR-CoDES were found for the SJT-ES (R2 = 0.125) and SJT-TS (R2 = 0.131). JSPE-S (R2 = 0.11) and SJT-ES (R2 = 0.10) explained the highest amount of variance in empathic behavior as measured by BGR. Stepwise multiple regression improved the model for BGR by including SJT-ES and JSPE-S, explaining 16.2% of variance. Conclusions: The instrument measuring the emotive component (IRI) did not significantly predict empathic behavior, whereas instruments measuring moral (JSPE-S) and cognitive components (SJT) significantly predicted empathic behavior. However, the explained variance was small. Empathy without borders? Cross-cultural heart and mind-reading in first-year medical students

Abstract:Background: This cross-cultural study was designed to examine cultural differences in empathy levels of first-year medical students. Methods: A total of 257 students from the academic year 2010/11, 131 at Jimma University, Ethiopia, and 126 at the Ludwig Maximilian University, Munich, Germany, completed the Balanced Emotional Empathy Scale (BEES), the Reading the Mind in the Eyes (RME-R) test, and a questionnaire on sociodemographic and cultural characteristics. Furthermore, we conducted a qualitative analysis of the students' personal views on the definition of empathy and possible influencing factors. Group comparisons and correlation analyses of empathy scores were performed for the entire cohort and for the Jimma and Munich students separately. We used a regression tree analysis to identify factors influencing the BEES. Results: The male students in Jimma (39.1 ± 22.3) scored significantly higher in the BEES than those male students from Munich (27.2 ± 22.6; p = 0.0002). There was no significant difference between the female groups. We found a moderate, positive correlation between the BEES and RME-R test, i.e. between emotional and cognitive empathy, within each university. Nevertheless, the RME-R test, which shows only Caucasian eyes, appears not to be suitable for use in other cultures. Conclusions: The main findings of our study were the influence of culture, religion, specialization choice, and gender on emotional empathy (assessed with the BEES) and cognitive empathy (assessed with the RME-R test) in first-year medical students. Further research is required into the nature of empathy in worldwide medical curricula.

Abstract:Objectives Empathy education is very important for medical students. There is little research on the influence of early clinical practice on the development of empathy and other aspects of professionalism in medical students. The aim of this study was to compare the self-reported empathy levels of first-year and second-year undergraduate medical students before and after their early clinical contact curriculum. Setting The study was conducted at the Shanghai University of Medicine & Health Sciences, Shanghai, China. Participants A total of 257 undergraduate medical students participated in the study. The 154 first-year students were studying in 10 community-based teaching hospitals, and the 103 second-year students were studying in 3 university-affiliated hospitals. Primary and secondary outcome measures Primary measures: the Jefferson Scale of Empathy—Student version (JSE-S) was compared between students of different sexes and in different academic years before their early clinical contact course. Secondary measures: comparisons were made after they finished the curriculum 3 weeks later. Results A total of 219 of 257 students responded (85.21% response rate), and 214 answers could be analysed (135 first-year and 79 second-year students; 120 female and 94 male individuals). No significant differences in the empathy scores before early clinical contact were observed between students of different sexes and in different academic years. After early clinical contact, the mean JSE-S score of the participants was significantly higher than the mean score at the beginning of the curriculum. Conclusions Empathy-focused training during early clinical contact can improve the empathetic capacity of undergraduate medical students. Fostering empathetic attitudes among undergraduate medical students is necessary for the early stage of their medical education. Further research is needed on the long-term effects of empathy-focused education in entry-level medical students.

Abstract:Background: The attribute of empathy leads to more desired patient outcomes. A patient who experiences empathy from student nurses will feel important and cared for. It is vital to know how student nurses perceive themselves in terms of empathy in caring. Thus, self-reflection is a requirement on the part of student nurses in a caring relationship. Objectives: This study aimed to determine student nurses' self-perceptions of empathy in caring and compare the third- and fourth-year student nurses' self-perceptions of empathy in caring. Method: A quantitative, descriptive and comparative approach was employed in the study. The population was undergraduate student nurses in their third- and fourth-year level of study (n = 77), while 56 respondents participated in the study. Ethical approval was obtained prior to commencing with the study. Data were collected by way of the Consultation and Relational Empathy measure questionnaire that consisted of 10 items responded to by using the 5-point Likert scale. Data were analysed by means of descriptive statistics, inferential statistics and t-tests. Results: All the student nurses perceived themselves to have empathy in caring. There was no significant difference in perceptions of empathy in caring by the nurses in their third- and fourth-year level of study. Conclusion: The results of the study provide insights for nursing education and training to shape and mould the empathy perceived by the student nurses. Future research could focus on the patients' perspective coupled with the student nurses' perspective to prevent bias.Contribution: This paper contributes by adding self perceptions of empathy by student nurses to support best practice in nursing.
Reflective narratives on unfolding ethics case vignettes: integration into the physiology course of first-year medical students

Abstract:Reflective narrative writing on unfolding ethics case vignettes has the potential to promote values like empathy among medical students, which will prove useful in their future. The objective of this study was to explore the scope of guided reflective narratives on unfolding ethics case vignettes integrated into physiology teaching to promote empathy among first-year medical students. First-year medical students (n = 150) were presented with unfolding case vignettes exploring ethical issues, as part of their physiology curriculum, with questions and prompts for a guided reflective narrative. Feedback about the program was obtained through a semistructured questionnaire. The contents of the students' reflective narratives and feedback were analyzed. The narratives revealed that students empathized with the various individuals involved in medical treatment and research, which was also reflected in student feedback (n = 116; 79%) and high Likert scale scores (74%). The program was considered effective by students in broadening their perspective and promoting critical thinking (n = 129; 88%). Through analysis of reflections, a rubric that would enable the evaluation of students' empathy on a scale of increasing ability to look at a situation from another's point of view emerged. This rubric could be used to quantitatively assess the impact of similar programs. Although divided in their individual opinions, the study population was able to relate to all individuals involved in medical practice and research, recognizing the need for fair and ethical practices. The content analysis led to the development of a rubric to grade empathy.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Unfolding case vignettes exploring ethical issues were introduced into the physiology curriculum of first-year medical students. The effectiveness of guided reflections following the case vignettes was explored. The analysis of the reflections and feedback on the program revealed that students became more empathetic. The reflections broadened their perspective and encouraged critical thinking. The analysis led to development of a rubric to grade the level of empathy, which can be used for quantitative assessment of empathy.

Abstract:Empathy is a cognitive attribute that forms the cornerstone for good doctor-patient encounters. The formative period for the development of empathy toward patients begins with clinical encounters within medical school. An individual medical student's empathy levels may in part be a product of their resilience and perfectionist attitudes. A cross-sectional study with 320 medical students across all years of study was conducted to determine the correlation of perfectionism and resilience with clinical empathy in medical students. The JSE-S, CD-RISC 10, and APS-R scales were used to assess levels of empathy, resilience, and perfectionism, respectively. The study found that a positive correlation exists between resilience (r = 0.174) and academic year with empathy, and a negative correlation exists between maladaptive perfectionism and empathy (r = -0.138). The resilience score declined progressively as the year of study progressed with a statistically significant. Mean empathy scores were lowest in fifth-year students (96.8 ± 12.5) and highest in third-year students (107.8 ± 13.2). Further longitudinal studies are necessary to better understand the impact of resilience and perfectionism on empathy.
Student empathy in standardized patient experiences: Applying concepts from a critical thinking emulation model

Abstract:Introduction: Clinician empathy can improve patient outcomes, but the literature is scant on patient-based, student-led experiences to demonstrate the projection of empathy in patient interactions. Purpose/objectives: (1) Develop a learning guide for observable behaviors communicating emotional and cognitive empathy and (2) determine whether the learning guide can be used as a rubric for assessing empathy in a standardized patient experience. Methods: Eleven standardized patients assessed 80 D3 students using a 4-point interval scale on 19 behavioral criteria in four domains: Initiation (four criteria); Health History and Caries Risk (four criteria); Treatment Planning (six criteria); and Communication Skills (five criteria). Standardized patients also provided qualitative feedback. Results: Standardized patients completed all 1520 interval scales on the rubric and 94% of 320 open-ended entries. Students performed well. Of the 1520 criterion interval scales, 1242 (81.7%) were rated "excellent." Wilcoxon signed-rank tests revealed Initiation scores (Mean [M] = 3.82, Standard deviation [SD] = 0.28) and Treatment Planning scores (M = 3.82, SD = 0.36) were significantly higher than Health History Scores (M = 3.75, SD = 0.34; p < 0.05). Qualitative feedback also was overwhelmingly positive for Treatment Planning and more equivocal for Health History. Conclusions: The emulation model for students to demonstrate observable aspects of empathy is viable as both a learning guide and evaluation rubric in a standardized patient format. The next steps include the development of a succinct skillset for reinforcement in the patient setting and continued discussion on what best captures core observable aspects of empathy.
