Abstract:Zn metal has received immense interest as a promising anode of rechargeable aqueous batteries for grid-scale energy storage. Nevertheless, the uncontrollable dendrite growth and surface parasitic reactions greatly retard its practical implementation. Herein, we demonstrate a seamless and multifunctional metal-organic framework (MOF) interphase for building corrosion-free and dendrite-free Zn anodes. The on-site coordinated MOF interphase with 3D open framework structure could function as a highly zincophilic mediator and ion sifter that synergistically induces fast and uniform Zn nucleation/deposition. In addition, the surface corrosion and hydrogen evolution are significantly suppressed by the interface shielding of the seamless interphase. An ultrastable Zn plating/stripping is achieved with elevated Coulombic efficiency of 99.2% over 1000 cycles and prolonged lifetime of 1100 h at 10 mA cm-2 with a high cumulative plated capacity of 5.5 Ah cm-2. Moreover, the modified Zn anode assures the MnO2-based full cells with superior rate and cycling performance.

Abstract:The growth of zinc dendrites poses a major challenge in developing stable aqueous zinc batteries. It is crucial to understand the mechanism underlying dendrite growth and the influences of various factors on the process of dendrite growth. In this study, a phase field model is constructed to simulate the growth of zinc dendrite and investigate the temporal and spatial distributions of ions and electric potential in both static and flowing electrolytes. The influences of various critical factors, including overpotential, anisotropic strength and electrolyte flow rate, on the morphology evolution of electrodeposit are investigated. Results reveal that the surface morphology evolution is intimately dependent on the competition between ion transport and the electrochemical reaction, and it can be modulated by various parameters. In particular, flowing electrolyte not only enhances the convective ion transport but also suppresses the dendrite bifurcation on the surface, resulting in a uniform distribution of the concentration gradient and a compact deposit. However, nonuniformity induced by the flowing electrolyte from the inlet to outlet may impede the stable cycling of zinc anodes in the flow batteries. Therefore, further design and optimization of the flow field are desired for zinc-based flow batteries. This work provides insights into the growth process of zinc dendrites and the influences of several critical parameters, which could inform the design of stable aqueous zinc batteries.

Abstract:This paper employs a phase-field-Lattice-Boltzmann method incorporating ion transport mechanisms in the electrolyte, including diffusion, electromigration and convection, to investigate the growth of Zn dendrite in aqueous zinc-based flow batteries. It was found that during electrodeposition, Zn2+ ions enrich in front of the dendrite tip to form a boundary layer of Zn2+ ion concentration due to diffusion and electromigration under the static state u=0.0m/s, resulting in the so called “tip effect”. Predicted results show that both the exchange current density and the diffusion coefficient have similar effect to the deposited dendritic growth dynamics according to the Damkohler number. It can be found that the growth pattern of deposited zinc dendrites is significantly influenced by the existing electrolyte forced flow. Predicted results show that the increase in flow rate results in the advective transport of Zn2+ ions in the electrolyte, which consequently leads to a reduction in the actual growth direction angle. This facilitates the formation of a dendrite-free deposition pattern and improves the performance and stability of the battery. Moreover, the competitive growth of polycrystalline grains during electrodeposition was investigated under the static state and the flowing state. Results show that the unfavorably orientated dendrites always lie behind the favorably orientated ones during electrodeposition.
Phase-Field Simulation of a Dynamic Protective Layer for the Inhibition of Dendrite Growth in Zinc Metal Batteries

Abstract:Metallic zinc (Zn) has been considered one of the most promising anode materials for next-generation aqueous Zn batteries due to its low redox potential and high storage capacity. However, excessive dendrite formation in Zn metal, corrosion, the evolution of hydrogen gas during the cycling process, and the poor Zn-ion (Zn2+) transport from the electrolyte to the electrode limit its practical application. One of the most effective strategies to suppress Zn dendrite growth and promote Zn2+ transport is to introduce suitable protective layers between the Zn metal electrode and the electrolyte. Herein, we mathematically simulated the dynamic interactions between the Zn deposition on the anode and the resulting displacement of a protective layer that covers the anode, the latter of which can simultaneously inhibit Zn dendrite growth and enhance the Zn2+ transport through the interface between the Zn anode and the protective layer. Our simulation results indicate that a protective layer of high Zn2+ diffusivity not only improves the deposition rate of the Zn metal but also prevents dendrite growth by homogenizing the Zn2+ concentration at the anode surface. In addition, it is revealed that the anisotropic Zn2+ diffusivity in the protective layer influences the 2D diffusion of Zn2+. Higher Zn2+ diffusivity perpendicular to the Zn metal surface inhibits dendrite growth, while higher diffusivity parallel to the Zn metal surface promotes dendrite growth. Our work thus provides a fundamental understanding and a design principle for controlling anisotropic Zn2+ diffusion in the protective layer for better suppression of dendrite growth in Zn metal batteries.

Abstract:We perform phase-field simulations of the electrodeposition process that forms dendrites within metal-anode batteries including anisotropic representation. We describe the evolution of a phase field, the lithium-ion concentration, and an electric potential, during a battery charge cycle, solving equations using time-marching algorithms with automatic time-step adjustment and implemented on an open-source finite element library. A modified lithium crystal surface anisotropy representation for phase-field electrodeposition model is proposed and evaluated through different numerical tests, exhibiting low sensitivity to the numerical parameters. Change of dendritic morphological behaviour is captured by a variation of the simulated inter-electrode distance. A set of simulations are presented to validate the proposed formulation, showing their agreement with experimentally-observed lithium dendrite growth rates, and morphologies reported in the literature.

Abstract:Sodium (Na) dendrite growth poses challenges such as short circuits and capacity loss, and the underlying mechanisms are unclear. Although the experiments of Na dendrite growth were reported, there are very few simulations that can assist in analyzing its morphology evolution mechanism. In addressing this challenge, we develop a phase-field model to explore the influence of current density, anisotropic strength, and Na-ion consumption on the evolution of Na dendrite morphology. It is found that higher current density promotes more dendrite growth and lateral branches. Anisotropy strength influences dendrite growth rates horizontally and vertically, with horizontal growth exceeding or equaling vertical growth, reducing short-circuit risks. Increased Na-ion consumption results in significant lateral branches, kinks, and pores in dendrite structures. These results offer valuable insights into mitigating the formation of erratic dendrites, holding significant implications for the advancement of Na-based batteries with high stability and safety.

Abstract:This paper presents a phase-field based numerical study on the 3D formation of dendrites due to electrodeposition in an experimental-scale lithium metal battery. Small-scale 3D simulations were firstly conducted to elucidate the characteristics and resolution requirements of the numerical framework. Using a four-fold anisotropy model to simulate the growth of lithium deposition, the dependency of dendrite morphology on charging conditions ( φb=−0.7V and φb=−1.4V ) on a (larger) experimental-scale metal anode was demonstrated. The dendrite shape was found to shift from a smoother, tree-like formation at the lower applied voltage, to a more spike-like, highly branched structure at the higher voltage. The resulting morphological parameters, such as dendrite propagation rates, volume-specific area, and side branching rates, were compared against published experimental data and found to be comparable to the reported ranges for the electrodeposition of spike- or tree-like metal dendrites. This finding supports our previous observation that dendrite formation is connected to the competition between the lithium cation diffusion and electric migration, generating an uneven distribution of Li + on the electrode surface. This observation also gives insight into dendrite inhibition strategies focusing on enhancing the diffusion of lithium ions to achieve a more uniform concentration field on the anode surface.

Abstract:The lithium metal anode represents an excellent choice of material for rechargeable batteries, while lithium dendrites growth has adverse effects on the manufacturing and performance of batteries because the lithium ions deposit unevenly on the electrode surface during the electrochemical process, which can lead to short circuits and safety issues within the battery. This work studied the morphology of lithium dendrites under two initial conditions: initial nuclei and smooth planar interface. By introducing the noise to the order parameter and concentration ratio, the model is able to simulate mossy dendrites, which is highly influenced by the nonuniformity of deposition and the charging conditions. Through the investigation of the fluctuations in lithium-ion concentration near the metal/electrolyte interface, it is found that with increased applied voltage, branches of the second order appeared orthogonal to the direction of growth. The simulation results reported in this work can shed light on the foundational principles of lithium dendritic growth and offer a regulation strategy for inhibition of lithium dendrite growth.

Abstract:Lithium dendrite growth due to uneven electrodeposition usually leads to the potential hazard of internal short circuit and shorter lifetime of lithium-based batteries. Extensive efforts have been devoted to explore the effects of single or two factors on dendrite growth, involving the diffusion coefficient, exchange current density, electrolyte concentration, temperature, and applied voltage. However, these factors interrelate during battery operation, signifying that a understanding of how they jointly influence the electrodeposition is of paramount importance for the effective suppression of dendrites. Here, we incorporate the dependent relationships among key factors into the phase-field model to capture their synergistic effects on electrodeposition. All the simulations are implemented in our self-written MATLAB code under a unified modeling framework. Following this, five groups of experimentally common dendrite patterns are reproduced and the corresponding electrodeposition driving forces are identified. Unexpectedly, we find that with the decrease of the ratio of exchange current density (or applied voltage) to diffusion coefficient, the electrodeposition morphology changes from needle-like dendrites to columnar dendrites and to uniform deposition. The present phase-field simulation tends to depict the practical electrodeposition process, providing important insights into synergistic regulation to suppress dendrite growth.

Abstract:We describe a phase-field model for the electrodeposition process that forms dendrites within metal-anode batteries. We derive the free energy functional model, arriving at a system of partial differential equations that describe the evolution of a phase field, the lithium-ion concentration, and an electric potential. We formulate, discretize, and solve the set of partial differential equations describing the coupled electrochemical interactions during a battery charge cycle using an open-source finite element library. The open-source library allows us to use parallel solvers and time-marching adaptivity. We describe two- and three-dimensional simulations; these simulations agree with experimentally-observed dendrite growth rates and morphologies reported in the literature.

Abstract:To improve the cycling performance of rechargeable zinc-air batteries, the dendritic morphology of electrodeposited zinc should be effectively controlled. It is of crucial importance to understand the formation mechanism of the zinc dendritic structure. Here we show that an electrochemical phase-field model is established to simulate dendrite growth of electrodeposited zinc, and several measures including the pulsating current and the electrolyte flow are taken to suppress dendrite growth in the charging process. The results demonstrate that dendrite propagation is mainly controlled by diffusion dependent on overpotential and surface energy anisotropy, and dendritic morphology can also give rise to non-uniform distribution of the electric field and ion concentration in the electrolyte. The proposed model and solutions will be available for studying dendrite growth of metal-air batteries as well as metal electrodeposition.

Abstract:Zinc possesses good electrochemical reversibility, high energy density, easy availability and low cost, which is widely used in secondary batteries. However, the problem of dendrite growth remains unresolved in the process of zinc regeneration, severely influencing cycle life of zinc base batteries. It is of great importance for inhibition of dendritic morphology to explore the mechanism of dendrite growth at the electrode surface. Here we present a phase-field model of shape change of electrodeposited zinc, simulating morphological behavior of the liquid-solid interface and investigating effects of activation overpotential, ion concentration, electrolyte conductivity and ion diffusivity and anisotropy of interfacial energy on dendrite growth of electrodeposited zinc. The results demonstrate that dendrite growth is mainly related to uneven distribution of ions from electrochemical reaction, and the dendritic morphology can be effectively controlled by means of increase of zinc oxide concentration, electrolyte conductivity and ion diffusivity. Abstract:Metallic zinc (Zn) presents a compelling alternative to conventional electrochemical energy storage systems due to its environmentally friendly nature, abundant availability, high water compatibility, low toxicity, low electrochemical potential (−0.762 V vs. SHE), and cost-effectiveness. While considerable efforts have been devoted to enhancing the physical and chemical properties of zinc-ion battery materials to improve battery efficiency and longevity, research on multi-physics coupled modeling for a deeper understanding of battery performance remains relatively scarce. In this study, we established a comprehensive two-dimensional model for single-flow zinc–nickel redox batteries to investigate electrode reactions, current-potential behaviors, and concentration distributions, leveraging theories such as Nernst–Planck and Butler–Volmer. Additionally, we explored the distribution of the velocity field using the Brinkman theory in porous media and the Navier–Stokes equations in free-flow channels. The validated model, informed by experimental data, not only provides insights into the performance of the battery, but also offers valuable recommendations for advancing single-flow zinc–nickel battery technology. Our findings offer promising avenues for enhancing the design and performance of not only zinc–nickel flow batteries, but also applicable for other flow battery designs.

Abstract:In solid state lithium batteries, lithium dendrites are prone to nucleate and grow at unstable electrode/electrolyte interfaces, intergranular and internal defect sites, which may cause damage to electrolyte structure and reduce battery capacity. Aiming at the problem of lithium dendrite growth in solid electrolytes, a mechanical-electrical-chemical coupling phase field model is proposed by introducing phase field variables and damage variables. The interaction between dendrites and electrolytes, as well as the correlation between dendrite growth and crack evolution are explored. The results indicate that the dendrites contract internally under the action of electrolytes and their growth is inhibited, and the higher the mechanical strength of electrolytes, the more obvious the inhibition effect. The electrolytes could suffer cracks and expands under the action of dendrites, leading to material failure. What's more, dendrites growth is always consistent with crack propagation morphology, and the slower dendrites grow, the fuller they fill the crack space, and the greater the interaction force with electrolytes. This study can provide theoretical guidance for revealing the damage mechanism of solid electrolytes and improving the optimization design of solid electrolyte materials.

Abstract:Lithium batteries have been widely used, but the growth of lithium dendrites does lead to some hazards, such as internal short circuit, thermal runaway and even explosion. In paper, a nonlinear phase field model combined with Butler-Volmer expression was developed to study dendrite growth during electrodeposition. Two types of initial electrode-electrolyte interface are applied in numerical simulations. Results show that the cation concentration enrichment occurs near the dendritic tip due to the electromigration, and the curve of the growth velocity versus time follows a simple power law relation, indicating that the stability of the dendritic array originating from initial electrode-electrolyte interface can be broken with the applied electrical potential increasing. Moreover, we found that applied electric potential gradient can strongly influence the dendritic growth velocity and the dendritic growth during electrodeposition is less relative to the surface tension anisotropy.

Abstract:Despite advancements, dendrite growth at the anode continues to be a persistent roadblock in accelerating the widespread deployment of hybrid flow batteries as the next-generation energy storage solution, due to the significant impact of dendrites on cycling performance and the potential for battery failure. The ability to analyze energy storage systems at micro-to-macro levels offers unprecedented insights into their behavior and performance. Herein, we develop a multiscale model utilizing phase-field method to investigate dendrite formation, growth, and stripping under operational conditions. The Zn-I system is employed to unravel the intricacies of dendrite evolution and its mitigation through strategic utilization of critical battery parameters. Our findings not only uncover precise zinc morphologies but also provide valuable insights into battery performance toward developing a strategy for mitigating dendrite growth and enhancing battery efficiency at high current density. To our knowledge, this is the first work to comprehensively untangle electrodeposition dynamics at multiscale in the field of flow battery and related research. The findings revolutionize our understanding of deposition behavior, driving transformative advancements in hybrid flow battery design and development, with potential applicability to other battery systems.

Abstract:Modeling and understanding dendrite growth on lithium metal anodes during charging is vital for improving battery safety. The phase field method has become an increasingly popular tool to achieve this due to its flexibility in handling complex morphologies and coupled physical processes. However, quantitative phase field models under realistic electrochemical conditions are rare. In this work, we derive a thermodynamically consistent phase field model in the grand potential framework. The design of this model emphasizes quantitative modeling of electrodeposition with experimental loading conditions and realistic length and time scales. First, electrostatic potentials in both the electrode and the electrolyte are considered to account for the interfacial potential difference. Second, the electrochemical driving force can be large even with an applied voltage of a few hundred millivolts; therefore, the grid size usually must be as small as a few nanometers to maintain a stable phase field profile. This hinders the modeling of system sizes of practical interest. To solve this problem, a mapping approach is introduced to maintain stability with moderate grid sizes and realistic applied voltages. Third, we thoroughly compare the phase field model with results from a sharp interface model for various cases that permit analytical solutions. Numerical studies demonstrate that the proposed model can quantitatively reproduce the sharp interface results. Moreover, lithium has highly anisotropic interfacial energy, which leads to corners on the equilibrium electrode-electrolyte interface shape. A convexification method is used to remove the ill-posedness due to this strong anisotropy. Finally, a parallel solver is developed to handle large systems. The overall framework is demonstrated by studying lithium dendrite morphologies under various conditions. In future work, the model can be used as a computational tool for the high-throughput screening process in battery design.

Abstract:The lithium battery is considered as one of the most reliable energy storage methods. The growth of dendrites is a primary challenge for the lithium battery. To simulate 3-D lithium dendrite evolution, a generic parallel computing library was implemented to solve nonlinear phase field governing equations to realize high computation efficiency. Lithium evolution under multiple electrochemical states, including charging, suspending and discharging is studied. Accordingly, growing, healing and necking of dendrites are observed. The driving force, ion concentration and the electric potential are investigated to understand the influence of surface tension and electrochemical reaction on behaviors of lithium. The source code of the program is available to promote the development of the phase field method in this field.

Abstract:Dendrite growth causing short circuits is a long-standing challenge in the battery field. Lithium-ion batteries are always prone to form dendrite, while magnesium-ion batteries are not. In this paper, an advanced phase field model is formulated to investigate the detailed patterns and growth differences between the lithium and magnesium deposition process. The simulation results show that the deposition growth of ion is relative to the deposition time. Furthermore, the deposition growth morphology of Li is the irregular tree-like pattern, while the deposition pattern of Mg is denser and smoother. According to our phase field model results, the contribution of a smaller electric field and driving force are important factors to make Mg form a dense deposition layer rather than a tree-like dendritic morphology, which Li prefers to form. For the dendrite growth of Li, a larger electric field and driving force at the dendrite tip lead to a stronger concentration of ion and more rapid dendrite growth. And the “entrainment” phenomenon of ion leading to positive feedback further accelerates the deposition of Li ion at the dendrite tip. Furthermore, the simulation results exhibit that the overpotential required to stimulate the rapid growth of magnesium dendrites is typically smaller than that of lithium.

Abstract:The growth of lithium dendrites in solid state batteries is an important factor that is disturbing their commercial application. The growth of lithium dendrites at the interface of lithium metal anode will not only lead to the reduction of battery energy efficiency, but also cause combustion, explosion and other safety problems. In order to explore the factors and methods that inhibit the growth of lithium dendrites, the phase-field theory is used to simulate the growth of lithium dendrites in polymer solid electrolyte batteries, and a phase-field model of lithium dendrite growth coupled with mechanical stress and thermal field is established. The effects of key physical factors such as ambient temperature, solid electrolyte Young modulus and external stress on dendrite growth and their acting principles are discussed and analyzed. The results show that under the conditions of high temperature, high solid electrolyte Young's modulus and external stress, the growth of lithium dendrites is slow, the number of long dendrites is small, and the electrodeposition is more uniform. In addition, the effects of Young's modulus of solid electrolyte and ambient temperature on the growth of lithium dendrites in common range were compared. It was found that the inhibition effect of changing Young's modulus of solid electrolyte on the maximum length of lithium dendrites was 19% higher than that of changing ambient temperature.
