Abstract:In this research, the propulsion of the proposed jellyfish-inspired mantle undulated propulsion robot (MUPRo) is optimized. To reliably predict the hydrodynamic forces acting on the robot, the proposed nonintrusive reduced-order model (NIROM) based on proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) additionally considers the POD basis that makes an important contribution to the features on the specified boundary. The proposed model establishes a mapping between the parameter-driven motion of the mantle and the evolution of the fluid characteristics around the swimmer. Moreover, to predict new cases where the input needs to be updated, the input of the proposed model is taken from the kinematics of the robot rather than extracted from full-order high-fidelity models. In this paper, it takes approximately 950 s to perform a simulation using the full-order high-fidelity model. However, the computational cost for one prediction with the proposed POD-NIROM is around 0.54 s, of which about 0.2 s is contributed by preprocessing. Compared with the NIROM based on the classic POD method, the proposed POD-NIROM can effectively update the input and reasonably predict the characteristics on the boundary. The analysis of the hydrodynamic performance of the MUPRo pinpoints that, over a certain period and with a certain undulation amplitude, the hydrodynamic force generated by the swinging-like mantle motion (k < 0.5) is greater, outperforming Aequorea victoria in startup acceleration. It is demonstrated that considering a certain power loss and a certain tail beat amplitude, the wave-like mantle motion (k > 0.5) can produce greater propulsion, which means higher propulsion efficiency.

Abstract:Underwater robots desire versatile, water -adaptive, untethered, and rapidly actuating soft artificial muscles. Existing artificial muscles compromise between high water compatibility and untethered rapid actuation. Taking inspiration from the watery and fast contraction characteristics of jellyfish, we present a jelly -like muscle design that features an extremely soft (elastic modulus, 66.9 kPa) and watery (water content, 83.3%) structure. The jelly -like muscle can instantly respond to electrical stimuli and provide underwater propulsion. The muscle can shift propulsion direction by simply tuning the voltage signal and quickly recover from electromechanical failures through repair. An untethered robot can be assembled by stimulating the muscle with an onboard power system. The robot reaches a maximum speed of 0.91 cm/s (0.3 body length per second) and has an endurance of 15.7 min with a 500-mAh lithium -ion battery. Robots can be constructed in different forms by tailoring the jelly -like muscle, which is promising for various applications.

Abstract:Robots for underwater exploration are typically comprised of rigid materials and driven by propellers or jet thrusters, which consume a significant amount of power. Large power consumption necessitates a sizeable battery, which limits the ability to design a small robot. Propellers and jet thrusters generate considerable noise and vibration, which is counterproductive when studying acoustic signals or studying timid species. Bioinspired soft robots provide an approach for underwater exploration in which the robots are comprised of compliant materials that can better adapt to uncertain environments and take advantage of design elements that have been optimized in nature. In previous work, we demonstrated that frameless DEAs could use fluid electrodes to apply a voltage to the film and that effective locomotion in an eel-inspired robot could be achieved without the need for a rigid frame. However, the robot required an off-board power supply and a non-trivial control signal to achieve propulsion. To develop an untethered soft swimming robot powered by DEAs, we drew inspiration from the jellyfish and attached a ring of frameless DEAs to an inextensible layer to generate a unimorph structure that curves toward the passive side to generate power stroke, and efficiently recovers the original configuration as the robot coasts. This swimming strategy simplified the control system and allowed us to develop a soft robot capable of untethered swimming at an average speed of 3.2 mm/s and a cost of transport of 35. This work demonstrates the feasibility of using DEAs with fluid electrodes for low power, silent operation in underwater environments.

Abstract:Jet propulsion is the main method of locomotion developed by cephalopods to swim through water, either for hunting or escaping from predators. Under this inspiration, diverse underwater robots utilizing jet propulsion‐based locomotion have been studied. This paper presents a cephalopod‐inspired robot based on a dielectric elastomer actuator, utilizing jet‐propulsion actuation. The actuator is designed and optimized under the guidance of a corresponding electromechanical model. Then, the flow field characteristics of the synthetic jet actuator were simulated and analyzed. Equipped with the actuator, the bio‐inspired robot can locomote either with a speed of 0.66 body length per second on the surface of the water by jetting air, or with a speed of 0.43 body length per second while almost completely submerged underwater by jetting water. The jet actuator presents even more environmental adaptability, which powers dual swimming locomotion by jetting two flow media, and could potentially be applied to the design of underwater robots.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Inspired by natural creatures, soft robots possess the unique advantages of large actuation and excellent adaptability. Untethered designs of soft robots are drawing more attention to researchers, but current research is limited. Also, there is an increasing need to improve the performance of bio-mimetic robots. This work describes an untethered soft robotic jellyfish with high mobility that can mimic a natural jellyfish's performance. The electrode of the robotic jellyfish is made by sandwiching carbon grease between two layers of dielectric elastomer film. The frame of the material, where six plastic paddles are attached, is made from a silicone elastomer. The robotic jellyfish has a maximum recorded swim speed of up to 1 cm s(-1), with a peak thrust force of 0.000 12 N. A finite element simulation is developed to study the performance of the robotic jellyfish in a theoretical manner. By embedding a compact remote-controlled power source, the robotic jellyfish is made autonomous. In this case, the max peak speed is around 0.5 cm s(-1). Ultimately, the working principles of the bio-mimetic robotic jellyfish can be useful in field studies and to guide the design of soft robots and flexible devices.

Abstract:We propose a novel underwater propulsion system inspired by the jet-propelled locomotion mechanism of squids and other cephalopods. A two-dimensional nonaxisymmetric fluid-structural interaction model is developed to illustrate the physical mechanisms involved in the propulsive performance of this design. The model includes a deformable body with a pressure chamber undergoing periodic inflation and deflation motions enabled by attached springs and a nozzle through which the chamber is refilled and discharged (to form a jet). By using an immersed-boundary algorithm, we numerically investigate the dynamics of this system in the tethered mode. The thrust generation is found to increase with the frequency of body deformation, whereas the efficiency reaches a peak at a certain frequency. Examinations of the surrounding flow field illustrate a combination of vortices shed from the body and the nozzle. The optimal efficiency is reached when the nozzle-generated vortices start to dominate the wake. Our simulations also suggest that steady-state response can only be sustained for a few cycles before the wake is disturbed by a symmetry-breaking instability, which significantly affects the propulsive performance. Special strategies are needed to achieve stable long-distance swimming.

Jellyfish-Inspired Soft Robot Driven by Pneumatic Bistable Actuators

Abstract:Soft actuators offer numerous potential applications; however, challenges persist in achieving a high driving force and fast response speed. In this work, we present the design, fabrication, and analysis of a soft pneumatic bistable actuator (PBA) mimicking jellyfish subumbrellar muscle motion for waterjet propulsion. Drawing inspiration from the jellyfish jet propulsion and the characteristics of bistable structure, we develop an elastic band stretch prebending PBA with a simple structure, low inflation cost, exceptional driving performance, and stable driving force output. Through a bionic analysis of jellyfish body structure and motion, we integrate the PBA into a jellyfish-like prototype, enabling it to achieve jet propulsion. To enhance the swimming performance, we introduce a skin-like structure for connecting the soft actuator to the jellyfish-like soft robot prototype. This skin-like structure optimizes the fluid dynamics during jet propulsion, resulting in improved efficiency and maneuverability. Our study further analyzes the swimming performance of the jellyfish-like prototype, demonstrating a swimming speed of 3.8 cm/s (0.32 body length/s, BL/s) for the tethered prototype and 4.7 cm/s (0.38 BL/s) for the untethered prototype. Moreover, we showcase the jellyfish-like prototype's notable load-bearing capacity and fast-forward swimming performance compared to other driving methods for underwater biomimetic robots. This work provides valuable insights for the development of highly agile and fast responsive soft robots that imitate the subumbrellar muscle of jellyfish for efficient water-jet propulsion, utilizing skin-like structures to enhance swimming performance.

Abstract:Soft robots driven by stimuli-responsive materials have their own unique advantages over traditional rigid robots such as large actuation, light weight, good flexibility and biocompatibility. However, the large actuation of soft robots inherently co-exists with difficulty in control with high precision. This article presents a soft artificial muscle driven robot mimicking cuttlefish with a fully integrated on-board system including power supply and wireless communication system. Without any motors, the movements of the cuttlefish robot are solely actuated by dielectric elastomer which exhibits muscle-like properties including large deformation and high energy density. Reinforcement learning is used to optimize the control strategy of the cuttlefish robot instead of manual adjustment. From scratch, the swimming speed of the robot is enhanced by 91% with reinforcement learning, reaching to 21 mm/s (0.38 body length per second). The design principle behind the structure and the control of the robot can be potentially useful in guiding device designs for demanding applications such as flexible devices and soft robots.
Pleobot: a modular robotic solution for metachronal swimming

Abstract:Metachronal locomotion is a widespread swimming mode used by aquatic swarming organisms to achieve performance and maneuverability in the intermediate Reynolds number regime. Our understanding of the mechanisms driving these abilities is limited due to the challenges of studying live organisms. Designs inspired by nature present an approach for developing small and maneuverable underwater self-propelled robots. Here, we present the design, manufacture, and validation of the \emph{Pleobot} --a unique krill-inspired robotic swimming appendage constituting the first platform to study metachronal propulsion comprehensively. Our methods combine a multi-link 3D printed mechanism with active and passive actuation of the joints to generate natural kinematics. Using force and fluid flow measurements in parallel with biological data, we show the link between the flow produced by the appendage and thrust. Further, we provide the first account of a leading-edge suction effect that contributes to lift during the power stroke. The repeatability and modularity of the \emph{Pleobot} enable the independent manipulation of particular motions and traits to test hypotheses central to understanding the relationship between form and function. Lastly, we outline future directions for the \emph{Pleobot}, including adapting morphological features. We foresee a broad appeal to a wide array of scientific disciplines, from fundamental studies in ecology, biology, and engineering, to developing new platforms for studying oceans across the solar system.

Abstract:An experimental biomimetic pulsatile jet propeller for robot cuttlefish is presented. Firstly the mechanism of jet swimming of cuttlefish and their mantle muscle structure was analyzed. Secondly the pulsatile jet propeller which is actuated by SMA wires was designed. Then the mechanical properties of the propeller were tested through experiment. The experimental result shows that the propeller can generate thrust force and the maximum thrust force can reach 600 mN. At last, the swimming experiments are carried out and the maximum swimming speed is 8.7 cm/s.
A versatile jellyfish-like robotic platform for effective underwater propulsion and manipulation

Abstract:Underwater devices are critical for environmental applications. However, existing prototypes typically use bulky, noisy actuators and limited configurations. Consequently, they struggle to ensure noise-free and gentle interactions with underwater species when realizing practical functions. Therefore, we developed a jellyfish-like robotic platform enabled by a synergy of electrohydraulic actuators and a hybrid structure of rigid and soft components. Our 16-cm-diameter noise-free prototype could control the fluid flow to propel while manipulating objects to be kept beneath its body without physical contact, thereby enabling safer interactions. Its against-gravity speed was up to 6.1 cm/s, substantially quicker than other examples in literature, while only requiring a low input power of around 100 mW. Moreover, using the platform, we demonstrated contact-based object manipulation, fluidic mixing, shape adaptation, steering, wireless swimming, and cooperation of two to three robots. This study introduces a versatile jellyfish-like robotic platform with a wide range of functions for diverse applications.

Abstract:This paper presented a flexible and easily fabricated untethered underwater robot inspired by Aurelia, which is named “Au-robot”. The Au-robot is actuated by six radial fins made of shape memory alloy (SMA) artificial muscle modules, which can realize pulse jet propulsion motion. The thrust model of the Au-robot’s underwater motion is developed and analyzed. To achieve a multimodal and smooth swimming transition for the Au-robot, a control method integrating a central pattern generator (CPG) and an adaptive regulation (AR) heating strategy is provided. The experimental results demonstrate that the Au-robot, with good bionic properties in structure and movement mode, can achieve a smooth transition from low-frequency swimming to high-frequency swimming with an average maximum instantaneous velocity of 12.61 cm/s. It shows that a robot designed and fabricated with artificial muscle can imitate biological structures and movement traits more realistically and has better motor performance.

Abstract:The whirligig beetle, claimed to be one of the most energy-efficient swimmers in the animal kingdom, has evolved a series of propulsion strategies that may serve as a source of inspiration for the design of propulsion mechanisms for energy-efficient surface swimming. In this paper, we introduce a robot platform that was developed to test an energy-efficient propulsion mechanism inspired by the whirligig beetle. A propulsor-body-fluid interaction dynamics model is proposed, and based on this model, the propulsor flexural rigidity and beating patterns are optimized in order to achieve energy-efficient linear swimming and turning. The optimization results indicate that a propulsor with decreasing flexural rigidity enhances vortex shedding and improves thrust generation. It has also been found that an alternating asymmetrical beating sequence and optimal beating frequency of 0.71 Hz improves propulsion efficiency for linear swimming of the robot. The alternating beating of the outboard propulsors and the unfolded inboard propulsors working as brakes results in efficient turning with a smaller turning radius. Both simulation and experimental studies were conducted, and the results illustrate that decreasing flexural rigidity along the propulsor length, an oscillating body motion, and an S-shaped trajectory are critical for energy-efficient propulsion of the robot.
Nebula: A Flexible, Solid-State Swimming Robot Enabled by HASEL Actuators

Abstract:After millions of years of evolution, ocean creatures have mastered the underwater environment. In human interactions with the underwater world, unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) are needed for applications where human divers are impractical or at great risk such as exploration of remote locations or the deep ocean. Current propeller-driven UUVs stand to gain greater efficiency and maneuverability by mimicking underwater creatures. Biological fish outperform the state-of-the-art bio-inspired UUVs, but it has been shown in hydrofoil literature that tailoring chordwise flexibility can improve swimming performance across several metrics. In this paper we aim to integrate chordwise flexibility and integrated soft actuators to demonstrate a soft robotic propulsor which better mimics the structure and capability of fish. Inspired by cartilaginous body-and-caudal-fin (BCF) fishes like sharks, we built a soft robotic fish from compliant components with embedded smart actuators. The robot’s body is made of a 3D printed rubber skeleton and electro-hydraulic contracting-pouch actuators embedded in compliant silicone. The actuators used were hydraulically-amplified, self-healing electrostatic (HASEL) artificial muscles placed in an antagonistic configuration across the spine to produce lateral body contractions. We tailored the stiffness distribution of the body to passively induce BCF swimming kinematics at the caudal fin in response to actuator contractions in the main body. In this paper, the design and fabrication of the soft robot is described and its underwater structural dynamics are characterized with experimental testing in quiescent water. Full-body high speed videos of the robotic fish were taken at varying actuator input voltage and frequency to quantify its dynamic response. We show that the robot’s compliant body deforms like a biological fish and is capable of tail-beat speeds up to 73 mm/s. This flexible, joint-less design with embedded actuation is a step toward fieldable, lifelike bio-inspired UUVs for the future of underwater robotics.

Octopus-Swimming-Like Robot with Soft Asymmetric Arms

Abstract:Underwater vehicles have seen significant development over the past seventy years. However, bio-inspired propulsion robots are still in their early stages and require greater interdisciplinary collaboration between biologists and roboticists. The octopus, one of the most intelligent marine animals, exhibits remarkable abilities such as camouflaging, exploring, and hunting while swimming with its arms. Although bio-inspired robotics researchers have aimed to replicate these abilities, the complexity of designing an eight-arm bionic swimming platform has posed challenges from the beginning. In this work, we propose a novel bionic robot swimming platform that combines asymmetric passive morphing arms with an umbrella-like quick-return mechanism. Using only two simple constant-speed motors, this design achieves efficient swimming by replicating octopus-like arm movements and stroke time ratios. The robot reached a peak speed of 314 mm/s during its second power stroke. This design reduces the complexity of traditional octopus-like swimming robot actuation systems while maintaining good swimming performance. It offers a more achievable and efficient platform for biologists and roboticists conducting more profound octopus-inspired robotic and biological studies.

Abstract:The efficient swimming performance of fish is a miracle of nature, and the bionic robot fish powered by smart materials can replicate the movement pattern of fish to a greater extent. To achieve a simple, flexible, and controllable underwater robot, a novel robot fish driven by piezoelectric bimorphs is proposed in this study, which has similar swimming patterns to the body and/or caudal fin propulsion (BCF) swimming mode and can achieve straight travel and steering underwater. The validity and feasibility of the principles were verified by wet mode simulation. A prototype is manufactured and tested for underwater vibration characteristics to confirm the motion pattern of the caudal fin of the robot fish. It has a weight of 13.3 g, a length of 150 mm. The maximum uniform speed of the robot fish prototype is 53 mm/s, and the thrust is 2.213 mN, and its maximum efficiency is 0.864%.

Abstract:Bioinspired morphing swimmers are designed integrating chemical protein motors and photoresponsive liquid crystal networks. This approach gives access to five interchangeable modes of locomotion within a single swimming robot via shape‐morphing of the soft structure. The proposed design, which mimics the mechanisms of surface gliding and posture change of semiaquatic insects, offers untethered and orthogonal power and control for small‐scale swimming soft robots. Aquatic insects have developed versatile locomotion mechanisms that have served as a source of inspiration for decades in the development of small‐scale swimming robots. However, despite recent advances in the field, efficient, untethered, and integrated powering, actuation, and control of small‐scale robots remains a challenge due to the out‐of‐equilibrium and dissipative nature of the driving physical and chemical phenomena. Here, we have designed small‐scale, bioinspired aquatic locomotors with programmable deterministic trajectories that integrate self‐propelled chemical motors and photoresponsive shape‐morphing structures. A Marangoni motor system is developed integrating structural protein networks that self‐regulate the release of chemical fuel with photochemical liquid crystal network (LCN) actuators that change their shape and deform in and out of the surface of water. While the diffusion of fuel from the motor system regulates the propulsion, the dissipative photochemical deformation of LCNs provides locomotors with control over the directionality of motion at the air‐water interface. This approach gives access to five different but interchangeable modes of locomotion within a single swimming robot via morphing of the soft structure. The proposed design, which mimics the mechanisms of surface gliding and posture change of semiaquatic insects such as water treaders, offers solutions for autonomous swimming soft robots via untethered and orthogonal power and control.

Abstract:Natural selection has tuned many flying and swimming animals across different species to share the same narrow design space for optimal high-efficient and energy-saving locomotion, e.g., their dimensionless Strouhal numbers St that relate flapping frequency and amplitude and forward speed fall within the range of 0.2 < St < 0.4 for peak propulsive efficiency. It is rather challenging to achieve both fast and high-efficient soft-bodied swimming robots with high performances that are comparable to marine animals, due to the observed narrow optimal design space in nature and the compliance of soft body. Here, bioinspired by the wing or fin flapping motion in flying and swimming animals, we report leveraging the generic principle of snapping instabilities in the bistable and multistable flexible pre-curved wings for high-performance, butterfly swimming-like, soft-bodied flapping-wing robots. The soft swimming robot is lightweight (2.8 grams) and demonstrates a record-high speed of 3.74 body length/s (4.8 times faster than the reported fastest soft swimmer), high-efficient (0.2 < St = 0.25 < 0.4), low energy consumption cost, and high maneuverability (a high turning speed of 157o /s). Its high performances largely outperform the state-of-the-art soft swimming robots and are even comparable to its biological counterparts.

Abstract:Monitoring, sensing, and exploration of over 70% of the Earth's surface that is covered with water is permitted through the deployment of underwater bioinspired robots without affecting the natural habitat. To create a soft robot actuated with soft polymeric actuators, this paper describes the development of a lightweight jellyfish-inspired swimming robot, which achieves a maximum vertical swimming speed of 7.3 mm/s (0.05 body length/s) and is characterized by a simple design. The robot, named Jelly-Z, utilizes a contraction–expansion mechanism for swimming similar to the motion of a Moon jellyfish. The objective of this paper is to understand the behavior of soft silicone structure actuated by novel self-coiled polymer muscles in an underwater environment by varying stimuli and investigate the associated vortex for swimming like a jellyfish. To better understand the characteristics of this motion, simplified Fluid–structure simulation, and particle image velocimetry (PIV) tests were conducted to study the wake structure from the robot's bell margin. The thrust generated by the robot was also characterized with a force sensor to ascertain the force and cost of transport (COT) at different input currents. Jelly-Z is the first robot that utilized twisted and coiled polymer fishing line (TCP FL ) actuators for articulation of the bell and showed successful swimming operations. Here, a thorough investigation on swimming characteristics in an underwater setting is presented theoretically and experimentally. We found swimming metrics of the robot are comparable with other jellyfish-inspired robots that have utilized different actuation mechanisms, but the actuators used here are scalable and can be made in-house relatively easily, hence paving way for further advancements into the use of these actuators.

Accelerating Aquatic Soft Robots with Elastic Instability Effects

Abstract:Sinusoidal undulation has long been considered the most successful swimming pattern for fish and bionic aquatic robots [1]. However, a swimming pattern generated by the hair clip mechanism (HCM, part iii, Figure 1A) [2]~[5] may challenge this knowledge. HCM is an in-plane prestressed bi-stable mechanism that stores elastic energy and releases the stored energy quickly via its snap-through buckling. When used for fish robots, the HCM functions as the fish body and creates unique swimming patterns that we term HCM undulation. With the same energy consumption [3], HCM fish outperforms the traditionally designed soft fish with a two-fold increase in cruising speed. We reproduce this phenomenon in a single-link simulation with Aquarium [6]. HCM undulation generates an average propulsion of 16.7 N/m, 2-3 times larger than the reference undulation (6.78 N/m), sine pattern (5.34 N/m/s), and cambering sine pattern (6.36 N/m), and achieves an efficiency close to the sine pattern. These results can aid in developing fish robots and faster swimming patterns.
