Abstract:Today, although acoustic designs for different purposes are not realized in sports halls designed for sports activities, these halls are widely used for various events such as conferences and concerts. In this study; The main activity area in the Beşirli Central Tennis Court building, which was built for sports activities within the scope of the European Youth Games in Trabzon Province, was evaluated in terms of acoustics for different functional uses by computer simulation method. First of all, 3D models were prepared for the current conditions of the main sports event areas according to different audience occupancy rates. Then the models were transferred to the simulation program to evaluate the objective parameters of the sound. After obtaining the objective parameter values of the sound, 3D models of the hall were prepared again with the sound-absorbing mechanisms placed between the existing steel structural system on the ceiling plane of the hall, designed for the realization of sports, music and speech activities in the sports activity areas. The prepared 3D models were transferred to the ODEON V10 program and the simulation process was repeated. As a result of all simulations, the values of the objective parameters of the sound obtained for indoor sports activity areas were compared and evaluated with each other and the accepted optimum value ranges.

Abstract:The Emoti-Chair is a novel technology to enhance entertainment through vibrotactile stimulation. We assessed the experience of this technology in two workshops. In the first workshop, deaf film-makers experimented with creating vibetracks for a movie clip using a professional movie editing software. In the second workshop, trained opera singers sang and felt their voice through the Emoti-Chair. Participants in both workshops generally found the overall experience to be exciting and they were motivated to use the Chair for upcoming projects.

Abstract:With the advent of computer technology, Virtual Reality (VR) became an integral part of design studios in architecture education. Researchers have been exploring how VR-enhanced design studios can be assessed from a student-centered perspective. This paper illustrates the role of teaching architectural design for developing a novel and contextual curriculum based on an analysis of student feedback. The background focuses on the development of VR-based architectural design education. The methodology frames two digital design ecosystems which are experimented in four undergraduate courses. With an ecosystem-based approach discussed in this paper, a medium-oriented and a content-oriented curriculum are offered for testing students' reaction to teaching design in VR. In both ecosystems, students are engaged with advanced digital design methods and techniques, which include 3D form-finding, building information modeling, visual programming, coding, and real-time rendering. The study screens the usage of software solutions for the creation of complex virtual environments, covering Blender, Rhinoceros, Unity, Grasshopper, and Revit. The implementation of a User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ) comparatively demonstrates the performative qualities of both digital design ecosystems. Results indicate that the intensity of interaction varied in two incomparable, but connate, levels of qualities. The findings suggest that the perspicuity aspects of student interaction bare the risk of "complicated" and "confusing" software. The results further demonstrate a conflict between task-related qualities and non-task related qualities. Additionally, interacting with VR tools in architecture design education is found attractive, stimulating, and original despite low scores on the pragmatic qualities of perspicuity, efficiency, and dependability. The data and results obtained from this study give insight into the planning of design studios in architecture education based on the use of VR and digital methods. Therefore, this study contributes to future research in the contextualization of the design teaching efforts.

Abstract:The physical and representational contents of the public space are in a dynamic evolving state with the changes in the social structure and urban structure. In the historical process, the phenomenon of public space has been affected by the developments experienced with the change in the way individuals establish relationships in public life. Today, this transformation has occurred through virtual networks with the development of information and communication technologies. The paper aims to understand the public sphere dynamics that have changed with information and communication technologies. Accordingly, it limits its scope on these questions: How virtual networks affect the representational form of public space? What are the spatial structuring of this new representational public realm? What effect does this transformation have on urban areas that are the physical spaces of public realm? The method of the study is to explain theoretical discussions by supporting examples. In this context, it has been found that virtual networks, known as a new form of public space, transform the representative and physical form of the public space in a multifaceted manner by relocating the way individuals communicate with each other on a virtual layer. In this virtual transformation, it has been seen that the representative public space is now formed on social networks and platforms and the spatial structuring of these areas is defined as virtual network. The effect of virtual networks on the physical spaces of the public realm is possible by clustering data about urban areas in these virtual environments. Therefore, the visibility of virtual networks on the physical spaces of the publicity takes place through the understanding of space usage; moreover, virtual network data, which hybridizes with contemporary urban areas, reveals new qualities in the sense of the city by embodying it through maps. The physical transformation of the public space with information and communication technologies is made possible by the use of virtual network data in the design processes of this new sensory city.

Abstract:This study employs mixed methods, integrating demographic variables to analyze public space space usage in child ergonomics Utilizing Space Syntax and Pierre Bourdieu's theory within the framework of inclusive public space, it explores the relationship and needs between ergonomics and the socio-demographic statuses of children. The research applies an analytical approach based on Bourdieu's focus on spatial capital to compare neighborhoods with varying socio-demographic characteristics in Istanbul's Umraniye and Kadikoy districts. A critical spatial analysis emerges from comparing 14 public spaces in Umraniye's Cakmak neighborhood (CS1) with a public area in Kadikoy's Suadiye neighborhood (CS2). Methodologically, the study includes weekday (day 1) and weekend (day 2) field observations, Space Syntax analysis, TSI 2022 demographic data, digital maps, and anthropometric measurements specific to children aged 7–11. This effective mixed methodology provides a notable comparative spatial examination in child ergonomics research, highlighting clear disparities between the public spaces in CS1 and CS2.

Abstract:Virtual Stage is an extended karaoke system based on virtual reality technology. A participant becomes the main character in an interactive music video. While singing along with the song played by Virtual Stage, the participant uses body movements to interact with the virtual characters, which reside in a virtual environment and behave intelligently. In Virtual Stage, the participant's video image, grabbed by a video camera, is composited with the rendered image of the 3D virtual environment. Participants will see the realistic video image of themselves and get a false feeling of immersion, as if existing in the VE.

Abstract:Entertainment, education and training are changing because of multi-party interaction technology. In the past we have seen the introduction of embodied agents and robots that take the role of a museum guide, a news presenter, a teacher, a receptionist, or someone who is trying to sell you insurances, houses or tickets. In all these cases the embodied agent needs to explain and describe. In this paper we contribute the design of a 3D virtual presenter that uses different output channels to present and explain. Speech and animation (posture, pointing and involuntary movements) are among these channels. The behavior is scripted and synchronized with the display of a 2D presentation with associated text and regions that can be pointed at (sheets, drawings, and paintings). In this paper the emphasis is on the interaction between 3D presenter and the 2D presentation.

Abstract:Public space/furniture are amongst the new domains to apply a data-driven approach of design intervention and improvements. Open space is essentially dynamic, livable and interactive. Various types of people spend time for various purposes. Therefore, the "Measure-Test-Refine" loop is applicable for improving open spaces gradually. In this research, we developed our original smart chair called "Proto-Chair" that can contribute to the new design method of public space. Our chair is made with 3D-printed soft auxetic patterns. It is morphable allowing users to sit in various ways. Also, our chair is equipped with two sensors, which collect data stream to distinguish four different states of the chair. Long-term sensor stream can be stored and used to refine the furniture. In this paper, we propose our concept, prototypes, sensing methods and results of experiments. We also introduce our future vision of a sensor-based public design platform.

Abstract:Sound, whose perception depends on spatial, temporal and cognitive factors, is an intangible issue within interaction design. It is not very easy for interaction designers to explore, understand, or ideate on this intangible and complex phenomenon as they mostly rely on visual language, sketches, or physical prototypes. In this paper, we present initial insights to the design of an interactive mediated sound reality system, which refines the users' interaction with a soundscape. The main contribution of this study is the insights gathered through the use of three observational user experience (UX) methods: (1) note- taking in soundwalks; (2) soundscape visualization; (3) auditory journey maps to overcome the above-mentioned difficulty in rationalizing the intangibility of human- soundscape interaction with focusing, recording and reflecting spatial, temporal and interactive aspects of soundscape.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to cover the design-implementation processes of the museum interiors of the museum building in Selçuk University campus, which consists of foyer, temporary and permanent exhibition areas that can realize the aims and functions of the museum in accordance with the culture of the institution to which it is affiliated. Two types of materials were used within the scope of the study. The first type of material is theoretical and visual information based publications, thesis studies, lecture notes, architectural and interior design printed publications and internet resources. The information scanned and analyzed was handled from general to specific. The second material is the analysis of the Selçuk University Museum building located in Selçuk University Alaeddin Keykubat Campus by the authors with the on-site identification stages, interviews with the relevant people, the requirements of the museum foyer, temporary, permanent exhibition areas and existing interior photographs. The method followed in the study is observation and detection. As a result of the researches and observations made by utilizing publications, thesis studies, course notes, architectural and interior architectural printed publications and internet resources on the subject, an identification study was carried out in the existing museum building. As a result of the research, it was stated that the museums within the university campus have an important place in terms of establishing a bond between the public and the university, apart from the educational areas affiliated to the institution. Apart from education and training structures, from a different perspective, it was mentioned that they are common multi-purpose areas and the positive aspects they add to the institution to which they are affiliated. The interior revisions made in the determined areas of the museum building, the project design process and the implementation phases were mentioned.
HapTable: An Interactive Tabletop Providing Online Haptic Feedback for Touch Gestures

Abstract:We present HapTable; a multimodal interactive tabletop that allows users to interact with digital images and objects through natural touch gestures, and receive visual and haptic feedback accordingly. In our system, hand pose is registered by an infrared camera and hand gestures are classified using a Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier. To display a rich set of haptic effects for both static and dynamic gestures, we integrated electromechanical and electrostatic actuation techniques effectively on tabletop surface of HapTable, which is a surface capacitive touch screen. We attached four piezo patches to the edges of tabletop to display vibrotactile feedback for static gestures. For this purpose, the vibration response of the tabletop, in the form of frequency response functions (FRFs), was obtained by a laser Doppler vibrometer for 84 grid points on its surface. Using these FRFs, it is possible to display localized vibrotactile feedback on the surface for static gestures. For dynamic gestures, we utilize the electrostatic actuation technique to modulate the frictional forces between finger skin and tabletop surface by applying voltage to its conductive layer. Here, we present two examples of such applications, one for static and one for dynamic gestures, along with detailed user studies. In the first one, user detects the direction of a virtual flow, such as that of wind or water, by putting their hand on the tabletop surface and feeling a vibrotactile stimulus traveling underneath it. In the second example, user rotates a virtual knob on the tabletop surface to select an item from a menu while feeling the knob's detents and resistance to rotation in the form of frictional haptic feedback.

Abstract:We present a pilot study aiming to explore the use of biometrics sensing technology within a semi-immersive VR environment, where users face architectural spaces which induce them sensations close to fear of heights, claustrophobia, frustration and relief. Electrodermal activity was used to detect users’ emotional arousal, while navigating in VR. Navigation conditions and participants’ expertise with games were controlled. Main results show that physiological measurement of user’s perceptions can discriminate well "positive" from "negative" spaces, providing designers with basic information on people’s emotional state when using the buildings they design.

Abstract:The 'basic design' course, which plays a key role in the process of creative thinking and converting thought into an idea in today's architecture and interior architecture departments, has been constructed on a new experimental learning method for this study. The study aimed to acquire a concrete space experience based on the assumed abstract thought, to produce a problem-solving-oriented design by making the student question the original design idea. The education method designed was accordingly carried out in 4 stages in 14 weeks in the 2021-2022 Education Period, Department of Interior Architecture, Selcuk University. For starters, theoretical information was conveyed with Gestalt principles; later abstract and concrete ideas were developed on the design problem, and in the third stage, projects were developed on the process of transition from abstract to concrete space for the solution of the problem, and finally, the results were evaluated. As a result of the studio experience, the students created a working doctrine that will direct the interior design studio works with the designed method, enable the formation of original forms and shapes, enabling them to obtain concrete space from abstract concepts, and design at different scales from equipment to space design.
The Virtual Slide Set - a curriculum development system for digital microscopy

Abstract:We describe the development of a Virtual Slide System for creating and viewing clinico-pathologic cases with embedded interactive digital microscopy. The system supports rich text-to-image annotation, including (1) hotlinks of text descriptions that move the student to the correct part of the slide, and (2) annotations such as arrows and circles that appear on the Virtual Slide on request. The interface can be configured by the student to alter the degree of guidance the system provides. The authoring layer provides a graphical user interface to authors for creating new case sets, cases, questions, and annotated virtual slides, which are saved to a database and automatically added to the Virtual Slide homepage. The system has been used in two pilot studies at the University of Pittsburgh.
A Design Model for Using Virtual Reality in Behavioral Skills Training

Abstract:This study suggests a design model for developing virtual reality (VR)-based learning environments which can be used for basic behavioral skills training. VR-Based Fire Safety Training Environment (VR-FST) was designed considering the principles of the persuasive technology. Following the suggested model, VR-FST was setup by integrating head-mounted display and joysticks on the Second Life. Evaluations through participants’ perspectives indicated that the VR-FST environment designed through the proposed model framework can provide high presence and the participants who use the environment perceived the VR-FST as realistic. The results indicate that the learning environments based on the VR-FST model can improve fire safety behavioral skills. It is thought that behavioral skills including danger can be safely delivered by employing the behavioral skills training approach, especially for young children. Current limitations and future refinements as well as suggestions for practitioners and researchers are also included.

Virtual Taekwondo Training Environment Prototype:Development and Evaluation

Abstract:Taekwondo is one of the traditional Korean martial arts and it is now a modern international sport. Basically, the conventional method of Taekwondo training is to join a training class together with other trainees which are conducted with a trainer. Besides that, supplementary materials are used whenever the trainees wanted to practice certain particular movements as well preparing for the test in the absence of the trainer. This paper introduces a Virtual Taekwondo Training Environment (VT2E) prototype as a supplementary material for self-directed Taekwondo training which integrates Virtual Reality (VR) and Motion Capture (MoCap) technologies. The aim of the VT2E prototype is to provide a proper and sophisticated supplementary material which will assist the Taekwondo trainees to practice outside the classroom. Quantitative research was employed for evaluating the following measurements; Satisfaction, Presence, Engaging, Ease of Use and Usefulness. The results of user evaluation indicated that the trainees agreed with all the measurements.

Segmentation and Analysis of Early Reflections from a Binaural Room Impulse Response

Abstract:In this paper, a novel method for analysis of binaural room impulse responses is presented. Individual reflections are localized in time and frequency from a measured binaural room impulse response based on the continuous cross-wavelet transform (XWT). The directions of the reflections are then analyzed based on KEMAR and CIPIC reference data lookup, and compared a previous approach. Analysis of the directions and arrival times of reflections allows detailed study of measured binaural room impulse responses. The reflections can also be resynthesized based on the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) and spread apart in time, resulting in a slow-motion room impulse response that can be useful for room acoustics design as well as in teaching room acoustics.
