Abstract:With the rapid development of lead-based perovskite solar cells, tin-based perovskite solar cells are emerging as a non-toxic alternative. Material engineering has been an effective approach for the fabrication of efficient perovskite solar cells. This paper summarizes the novel materials used in tin-based perovskite solar cells over the past few years and analyzes the roles of various materials in tin-based devices. It is found that self-assembling materials and fullerene derivatives have shown remarkable performance in tin-based perovskite solar cells. Finally, this article discusses design strategies for new materials, providing constructive suggestions for the development of innovative materials in the future.

Abstract:Since 2009, organic-inorganic halide perovskites have been widely studied in the field of optoelectric materials due to their unique optical and electrical properties. Pb-based halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs), in particular, currently have a record efficiency of 25.2%, thus showing strong potential in commercialization. However, the market prospects of PSCs have been hampered by the toxicity of lead-based materials. Therefore the seeking of less toxic and environmentally friendly elements that can replace Pb is of great interest. Tin-based perovskites are the most promising choice at present due to its similar electronic configuration as Pb, and can even have more superior semiconductor properties. As a rising star of lead-free perovskite solar cells, tin-based PSCs have drawn much attention and made promising progress during the past few years. However, it is still challenging to obtain efficient and stable tin-based PSCs because of the low defects formation energy and the oxidation of bivalent tin. Among all Pb-free perovskite materials that show photovoltaic performance, formamidinium tin tri-iodide (FASnI3) based PSCs are the most promising because of the suitable band gap, low exciton bind energy, and high carrier mobility. The main drawbacks of tin-based perovskite material are its instability because of the easy oxidation of Sn2+ into Sn4+ and high dark current which arises from high p-type carrier concentration. The latter originates from the low formation energy of Sn vacancies. Many strategies have been developed to overcome these problems and promote the performance of tin-based PSCs. On one type of pursuit to avoid the oxidation of Sn2+, reduction additives (e.g., SnF2, pyrazine, hydrazine vapor, hydroxybenzene sulfonic acid or its salt, and Tr-conjugated polymer) and solvent-free processing have been introduced and shown to be effective up to a point. In another type, Cs or Br alloying and construction of low-dimensional structures in tin-based perovskite have also been shown to be promising. In this review, the optical and electrical properties of tin-based perovskite are systematically discussed. And then, the film fabrication methods and different device architectures of tin-based PSCs are summarized. Finally, the current challenges and a future outlook for tin-based PSCs are discussed.

However, toxicity of lead-based perovskite materials possesses great concerns to natural environment and human body. Therefore, the quest for nontoxic and eco-friendly elements to replace lead in perovskites is of great interest. Among all the element choices, tin(II) (Sn2+) is the most promising candidate. As a rising star of lead-free PSCs, Sn-based PSCs have drawn much attention and made promising progress during the past few years. While the rapid oxidation and decomposition of Sn-based perovskites result in poor stability and low efficiency of PSCs. In this review, structural, optoelectronic properties and the critical issues of Sn-based perovskite materials are analyzed. Then, a detailed discussion on the recent methods in solving critical issues of Sn-based perovskite devices, from optimization on materials physics to device performance, is also presented. Finally, remaining challenges and future perspective are given to advance the progression of Sn-based PSCs.

Abstract:Since its invention in 2009, Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has attracted great attention because of its low cost, numerous options of efficiency enhancement, ease of manufacturing and high-performance. Within a short span of time, the PSC has already outperformed thin-film and multicrystalline silicon solar cells. A current certified efficiency of 25.2% demonstrates that it has the potential to replace its forerunner generations. However, to commercialize PSCs, some problems need to be addressed. The toxic nature of lead which is the major component of light absorbing layer, and inherited stability issues of fabricated devices are the major hurdles in the industrialization of this technology. Therefore, new researching areas focus on the lead-free metal halide perovskites with analogous optical and photovoltaic performances. Tin being nontoxic and as one of group IV(A) elements, is considered as the most suitable alternate for lead because of their similarities in chemical properties. Efficiencies exceeding 13% have been recorded using Tin halide perovskite based devices. This review summarizes progress made so far in this field, mainly focusing on the stability and photovoltaic performances. Role of different cations and their composition on device performances and stability have been involved and discussed. With a considerable room for enhancement of both efficiency and device stability, different optimized strategies reported so far have also been presented. Finally, the future developing trends and prospects of the PSCs are analyzed and forecasted.

Abstract:Recently, power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has been improved to 26.1%. However, the toxicity issue of lead still hinders the large-scale commercial production and application of lead (Pb)-based halide perovskites. Fortunately, environmentally friendly tin (Sn)-based perovskites have recently shown excellent performance. Among them, the all-inorganic Sn-based perovskites, including CsSnX 3 and Cs 2 SnX 6 , have better stability, more suitable bandgap, and higher charge mobility, which have attracted more attention from researchers than organic-inorganic Sn-based hybrid perovskites. Herein, we review recent research progress on all-inorganic Sn-based perovskite materials and corresponding solar cell devices. Finally, we also summarize the current challenges and future research directions for this type of PSCs.

Abstract:The development of efficient and stable lead-free perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is crucial for addressing the concern of environmental pollution from the toxic element lead. In recent years, tin PSCs have emerged as a promising candidate for high-performance, eco-friendly photovoltaic technology with a high certified power conversion efficiency (PCE) of more than 11%, indicating a great potential for future applications. Here, we review the recent efficiency progress of tin PSCs based on the equivalent circuit model of solar cells. We then discuss approaches toward efficiency improvement from the device viewpoint, such as optimizing the band gap, increasing the light-harvesting efficiency and carrier diffusion length, surface passivation, and regulating the interface energy-level alignment. Finally, we point out the possibility of reaching 20% PCE for tin PSCs and issues regarding enlarging the cell size and realizing scalable production in the future. We expect that these perspectives will be helpful for accelerating the commercialization of tin PSCs.

Abstract:Tin halide perovskites are promising candidates for lead-free perovskite solar cells (PSCs) not only due to their low-toxicity, but also due to their ideal energy bandgap, high charge carrier mobility, and long hot carrier lifetime. The certified efficiency of tin halide PSCs has now reached over 10%, but this is still far from the theoretical expectation. Much of the efficiency gap relates to the poor quality of tin halide perovskite films due to the lack of in-depth understanding about the crystal nucleation and growth mechanisms for such films. This recognition motivates the present review, which is focused on the crystallization kinetics of tin halide perovskites. In particular, starting from a germane discussion on crystal nucleation and growth theories, several methods that have been used for controlling the rapid crystallization of tin halide perovskites are dissected. Finally, the current challenges and prospects for tin halide PSCs are presented. This comprehensive review summarizes and illuminates the parameter space for the optimization of tin halide perovskite film quality, promoting the future development of ecofriendly PSCs with high efficiency and high stability.

Abstract:A major application limit for lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) is the presence of the highly toxic lead element, raising critical concerns of environmental pollution and health problems. To address this issue, tin halide perovskite NCs have been pushed to the forefront of perovskite research owing to their eco-friendly merit and tantalizing photophysical properties. In this Review, we critically summarize and assess the latest advances in the synthesis approaches of tin halide perovskite NCs including the hot injection, ligand-assisted reprecipitation, and chemical vapor deposition. More specifically, we detail the state-of-the-art preliminary studies in modulating their photophysical properties and in enhancing the stability with a variety of strategies such as precursor engineering, ligand engineering, and alloyed structure construction. Finally, we highlight the remaining challenges that need to be overcome to attain tin halide perovskite NCs with clear structure–property relationships and comparable physical and chemical properties to their lead-based cousins.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have achieved state‐of‐the‐art efficiency, approaching monocrystalline silicon solar cells due to the superior optoelectronic properties and intensive research efforts, fulfilling its forthcoming commercial use at affordable costs. Nevertheless, the toxicity of lead (Pb) is still one of the obstacles hindering future large‐scale production. Herein, the recent progress of emerging lead‐free tin (Sn)‐based PSCs is reviewed. First, the structural and photovoltaic‐related properties of Sn‐based perovskites are summarized. Following a brief introduction of film deposition methods, strategies recently adopted to obtain high performance are then discussed in detail. Finally, the current challenges and prospective opportunities are provided to help the further progression of Sn‐based PSCs.

Abstract:As a rising star of lead‐free perovskite solar cells (PCSs), tin‐based PSCs have drawn much attention and made promising progress during the past few years. Notably, interfaces in the tin‐based PSCs device have great impacts on performance enhancements. In this Review, the authors first demonstrate why the interface is especially crucial for tin‐based PSCs device. It is proposed that the engineering of i) interface between perovskite grains in the film and ii) interface within the PSCs device are of great significance on the improvement of device functionality and stability. Then, the up‐to‐date studies on interface engineering of tin‐based PSCs are reviewed, including the following strategies: i) passivation of trap states; ii) modification of interfacial layers; iii) construction of 2D/3D structure. At last, a future perspective and remaining challenges in this field are given, aiming to provide a comprehensive understanding of interfaces in tin‐based PSCs and give some new thoughts on interface engineering for efficient PSCs device.

Abstract:In this twenty-first century, energy shortages have become a global issue as energy demand is growing at an astounding rate while the energy supply from fossil fuels is depleting. Thus, the urge to develop sustainable renewable energy to replace fossil fuels is significant to prevent energy shortages. Solar energy is the most promising, accessible, renewable, clean, and sustainable substitute for fossil fuels. Third-generation (3G) emerging solar cell technologies have been popular in the research field as there are many possibilities to be explored. Among the 3G solar cell technologies, perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are the most rapidly developing technology, making them suitable for generating electricity efficiently with low production costs. However, the toxicity of Pb in organic–inorganic metal halide PSCs has inherent shortcomings, which will lead to environmental contamination and public health problems. Therefore, developing a lead-free perovskite solar cell is necessary to ensure human health and a pollution-free environment. This review paper summarized numerous types of Sn-based perovskites with important achievements in experimental-based studies to date.

Abstract:The power conversion efficiency of modern perovskite solar cells has surpassed that of commercial photovoltaic technology, showing great potential for commercial applications. However, the current high-performance perovskite solar cells all contain toxic lead elements, blocking their progress toward industrialization. Lead-free tin-based perovskite solar cells have attracted tremendous research interest, and more than 14% power conversion efficiency has been achieved. In tin-based perovskite, Sn2+ is easily oxidized to Sn4+ in air. During this process, two additional electrons are introduced to form a heavy p-type doping perovskite layer, necessitating the production of hole transport materials different from that of lead-based perovskite devices or organic solar cells. In this review, for the first time, we summarize the hole transport materials used in the development of tin-based perovskite solar cells, describe the impact of different hole transport materials on the performance of tin-based perovskite solar cell devices, and summarize the recent progress of hole transport materials. Lastly, the development direction of lead-free tin-based perovskite devices in terms of hole transport materials is discussed based on their current development status. This comprehensive review contributes to the development of efficient, stable, and environmentally friendly tin-based perovskite devices and provides guidance for the hole transport layer material design.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites have been a focus in the photovoltaic research field due to their remarkable advantages such as tunable direct bandgap, low exciton binding energy, high light harvesting, and so on. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of lead (Pb)-based perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has been rapidly raised from 3.8% to 25.5% over the decades. With the advantages of a simple preparation process and low production cost, PSCs have great potential in commercialization However, the toxicity of lead in traditional PSCs limits their large-scale production Among all lead-free perovskites, the tin-based one inherits the majority of the excellent photoelectric properties of lead-based perovskites. However, the maximum PCE of tin-based PSCs has only exceeded 13%. Although the electronic structure of Sn2+ is similar to that of Pb2+, it is easy to be oxidized to Sn4', and the formation energy of Sn vacancy defects is low, resulting in heavy p-doping in tin-based perovskite films. The background carrier concentrations of tin-based perovskites are as high as 1018-1020 cm(-3), which makes photo-generated carriers easy to be recombined. Tin-based perovskites usually experience single-molecule recombination, accompanied by a small amount of bi-molecular recombination, and Auger recombination is negligible. Therefore, reducing recombination in tin-based perovskites is to suppress the single-molecule recombination. At present, additive engineering and component modification strategies are mainly adopted to inhibit carrier recombination in tin-based PSCs. Additive engineering includes tin compensating additives. reducing additives and some other additives which interact with perovskites. Theories and experiments show that adding tin compensating additives in precursor solution can effectively improve the chemical potential of Sn and increase the formation energy of tin vacancies. Although the work mechanism of stannous halide as an additive is not fully understood, it has become an indispensable part to prepare high performance tin-based PSCs. The introduction of reducing additives in the precursor can effectively reduce Sn4+ and inhibit the oxidation of Sn2+, thereby inhibiting the generation of tin vacancies, optimizing the morphology of the film, and improving the efficiency and stability of the device. In addition, some additives which interact with perovskite through coordination bonds, ionic bonds and hydrogen bonds can optimize the nucleation rate of tin-based perovskites and passivate the unsaturated coordination of Sir+ at the grain boundaries. The composition modification of tin-based perovskites mainly includes A-site and X-site substitutions. Since the band structure of tin-based perovskites is mainly determined by Sn and X ions, A-site cation substitution only fine-tunes the bandgap of the perovskite. However. A-site cation substitution can tune the tolerance factor of perovskite, thereby improving the efficiency and stability of perovskite. As the alkyl chain of the A-site cation gradually increases, low-dimensional perovskites will be formed. The low-dimensional perovskite can inhibit the self-doping and ion migration, improve the efficiency and stability of the PSCs. It is worth noting that the current efficient tin-based PSCs are mainly focused on low-dimensional perovskites. In addition, since the np(2) electrons of halogens directly participate in the construction of the electronic structure. the bandgap of tin-based perovskites can be directly changed by adjusting the X-site anions. Compared with lead-based perovskites, tin-based ones have more suitable bandgap and higher theoretical efficiency. At the same time, the low toxicity of tin-based perovskites is also conducive to their large-scale industrial production. It is believed that with the in-depth research, tin-based perovskite will surely exert its full potential in the photovoltaic field.

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content"><p>Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have emerged as one of the third-generation photovoltaic technologies. However, the toxicity issue of the lead element in perovskite absorbers hinders their large-scale production. Thus, exploiting lead-free perovskite materials becomes an important solution to overcome this challenge. Among all the candidates, tin perovskites have advanced rapidly in recent years due to their low toxicity, favorable bandgap, and high carrier mobility. After a few years of development, the highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of tin PSCs has exceeded 13%, which is mainly attributed to the breakthroughs arising from additive engineering of the Sn perovskite layer. Herein, the role of additive engineering in the research community of tin PSCs is emphasized. First, the crystal structure, electronic characteristics, and the chemical instability of Sn perovskites are introduced. Next, additives used for stabilizing the Sn<sup>2+</sup> components, purifying SnI<sub>2</sub> sources, and improving the crystal quality of perovskite films are discussed in detail. Finally, challenges and perspectives are laid out to advance the properties of tin halide perovskites for further improving the device efficiency and stability. </p></section>

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites have unique optical and electrical properties, which make them an excellent class of materials for a broad spectrum of optoelectronic applications. However, it is with photovoltaic devices that this class of materials has reached the apotheosis of popularity, and is the massive interests of a large community of researchers that has led to a record power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 25.5% only after 10 years from their first use. Nevertheless, such high performance is achieved with Pb-based compounds, which are toxic to the environment. Therefore, in the last years a considerable research effort has been focused to substitute Pb with other less toxic group IVA metals. Sn-based perovskites are the most promising alternative because of their band-gap close to the optimal value for photovoltaic applications, the strong optical absorption, and the good charge carrier mobilities. Nevertheless, the low defect tolerance, the fast crystallization, and the oxidative instability of tin halide perovskites has confined till now the power conversion efficiency to much lower values of the one obtained with Pb-based perovskites. We believe that fundamental understanding of the electronic properties and of the film formation process is imperative to bring Sn-based devices at the level of Pb-based one. With this review we aim to give a detailed overview of the crystallographic, photophysical, and optoelectronic properties of Sn-based perovskite compounds in their multiple forms from the 3D systems till low dimensional structures. At the end, recent progresses in Sn-based perovskite solar cells are reviewed, mainly focusing on the detail of the strategies adopted to improve the device performances. For each sub-topic the current challenges and the outlook are discussed, with the aim to stimulate the community to address the most important issues in a concerted manner.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Perovskite solar cells represent a promising third-generation photovoltaic technology with low fabrication cost and high power conversion efficiency. In light of the rapid development of perovskite materials and devices, a systematic survey on the latest advancements covering a broad range of related work is urgently needed. This review summarizes the recent major advances in the research of perovskite solar cells from a material science perspective. The discussed topics include the devices based on different type of perovskites (organic-inorganic hybrid, all-inorganic, and lead-free perovskite and perovskite quantum dots), the properties of perovskite defects, different type of charge transport materials (organic, polymeric, and inorganic hole transport materials and inorganic and organic electron transport materials), counter electrodes, and interfacial materials used to improve the efficiency and stability of devices. Most discussions focus on the key progresses reported within the recent five years. Meanwhile, the major issues limiting the production of perovskite solar cells and the prospects for the future development of related materials are discussed.

Abstract:This review provided a comprehensive summary and discussion on the crystallization regulation of tin halide perovskite thin films. The classical theories of solution nucleation and crystal growth and correlated them to the actual deposition of perovskite thin films is reviewed. The influencing factors and difficulties in the crystallization process of tin perovskite, as well as advanced regulation strategies are then summarized. On this basis, the challenges to constructing more efficient and stable TPSCs in the future are discussed. Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are exuding unique charm in the third generation of thin film solar cell technology with high power conversion efficiency (PCE) and low production cost. Recently, the lead‐free tin halide perovskite solar cells (TPSCs) have drawn significant research interests due to the advantages of low toxicity, near‐ideal bandgap and high carrier mobility. However, the rapid crystallization and easy oxidation limits the film quality and final performance of the solar cells. Therefore, the deposition of high‐quality tin halide perovskite films is key to the advance of TPSCs. In this review, the classical theory of solution nucleation and crystal growth is reviewed and correlated to the practical deposition of tin perovskite film. The physicochemical properties of tin perovskite with those of lead counterpart and the differences in the crystallization process is carefully compared. On this basis, recent regulation strategies are systematically summarized in terms of the nucleation management, intermediate phase engineering and crystal growth regulation. In addition, the preparation of mixed tin‐lead (Sn‐Pb) PSCs toward high performance is also discussed, as well as the limiting factors for device performance and stability. Finally, the future challenges and prospects of the crystallization regulation are discussed toward more efficient and stable TPSCs.

Abstract:Due to their outstanding optoelectronic properties, lead-based halide perovskite materials have been applied as efficient photoactive materials in solution-processed solar cells. Current record efficiencies offer the promise to surpass those of silicon solar cells. However, uncertainty about the potential toxicity of lead-based halide perovskite materials and their facile dissolution in water requires a search for new alternative perovskite-like materials. Thanks to the foresight of scientists and their experience in lead-based halide perovskite preparation, remarkable results have been obtained in a short period of time using lead-free perovskite compositions. However, the lower solar-to-energy conversion efficiency and long-term stability issues are serious drawbacks that hinder the potential progression of these materials. Here, we review and analyse strategies in the literature and the most promising solutions to identify the factors that limit the power conversion efficiency and long-term stability of lead-free tin-based perovskite solar cells. In the light of the current state-of-the-art, we offer perspectives for further developing these promising materials.
