Abstract:From a historical perspective, coinage metals (CMNMs) are most renowned for their monetary, ornamental, and metallurgical merits; nevertheless, as nanotechnology's potential has only just come to light, their metal nanostructures and uses may be viewed as products of modern science. Notable characteristics of CMNMs include visual, electrical, chemical, and catalytic qualities that depend on shape and size. Due diligence on the creation and synthesis of CMNMs and their possible uses has been greatly promoted by these characteristics. This review focuses on solution-based methods and provides an overview of the latest developments in CMNMs and their bimetallic nanostructures. It discusses a range of synthetic techniques, including conventional procedures and more modern approaches used to enhance functionality by successfully manipulating the CMNMs nanostructure's size, shape, and composition. To help with the design of new nanostructures with improved capabilities in the future, this study offers a brief assessment of the difficulties and potential future directions of these intriguing metal nanostructures. This review focuses on mechanisms and factors influencing the synthesis process, green synthesis, and sustainable synthesis methods. It also discusses the wide range of biological domains in which CMNMs are applied, including antibacterial, antifungal, and anticancer. Researchers will therefore find the appropriateness of both synthesizing and using CMNMS keeping in mind the different levels of environmental effects.

Abstract:Infections from antibiotic-resistant bacteria have caused huge economic loss and numerous deaths over the past decades. Researchers are exploring multiple strategies to combat these bacterial infections. Metal nanomaterials have been explored as therapeutics against these infections owing to their relatively low toxicity, broad-spectrum activity, and low bacterial resistance development. Some coinage metal nanoclusters, such as gold, silver, and copper nanoclusters, can be readily synthesized. These nanoclusters can feature multiple useful properties, including ultra-small size, high catalytic activity, unique photoluminescent properties, and photothermal effect. Coinage metal nanoclusters have been investigated as antimicrobials, but more research is required to tap their full potential. In this review, we discuss multiple advantages and the prospect of using gold/silver/copper nanoclusters as antimicrobials.

Abstract:Gold (Au) and silver (Ag) nanocrystals (NCs) have been extensively employed as appealing platforms for biomedical applications over the past few decades. Their bimetallic nanocrystals (Au/Ag NCs) are currently attracting tremendous attention as they exhibit not only a combination of properties associated with Au and Ag, but also novel properties and capabilities due to their synergistic effect. In this review, we first highlight the recent developments in the controllable synthesis of Au/Ag bimetallic NCs, including their core-shell structure, alloy structure, heterostructure and complex structure. Their recent advances in biomedical applications, including localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR)-related assays, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based assays, photothermal-derived therapy and release, and catalysis applications, are then outlined and discussed respectively. Finally, we conclude with challenges and perspectives of controllable synthesis of Au/Ag NCs and their further applications in biomedical field.
Biosynthesis of Au, Ag and Au-Ag bimetallic nanoparticles using protein extracts of Deinococcus radiodurans and evaluation of their cytotoxicity.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Biosynthesis of noble metallic nanoparticles (NPs) has attracted significant interest due to their environmental friendly and biocompatible properties. METHODS:In this study, we investigated syntheses of Au, Ag and Au-Ag bimetallic NPs using protein extracts of Deinococcus radiodurans, which demonstrated powerful metal-reducing ability. The obtained NPs were characterized and analyzed by various spectroscopy techniques. RESULTS:The D. radiodurans protein extract-mediated silver nanoparticles (Drp-AgNPs) were preferably monodispersed and stably distributed compared to D. radiodurans protein extract-mediated gold nanoparticles (Drp-AuNPs). Drp-AgNPs and Drp-AuNPs exhibited spherical morphology with average sizes of 37.13±5.97 nm and 51.72±7.38 nm and zeta potential values of -18.31±1.39 mV and -15.17±1.24 mV at pH 7, respectively. The release efficiencies of Drp-AuNPs and Drp-AgNPs measured at 24 h were 3.99% and 18.20%, respectively. During the synthesis process, Au(III) was reduced to Au(I) and further to Au(0) and Ag(I) was reduced to Ag(0) by interactions with the hydroxyl, amine, carboxyl, phospho or sulfhydryl groups of proteins and subsequently stabilized by these groups. Some characteristics of Drp-AuNPs were different from those of Drp-AgNPs, which could be attributed to the interaction of the NPs with different binding groups of proteins. The Drp-AgNPs could be further formed into Au-Ag bimetallic NPs via galvanic replacement reaction. Drp-AuNPs and Au-Ag bimetallic NPs showed low cytotoxicity against MCF-10A cells due to the lower level of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation than that of Drp-AgNPs. CONCLUSIONS:These results are crucial to understand the biosynthetic mechanism and properties of noble metallic NPs using the protein extracts of bacteria. The biocompatible Au or Au-Ag bimetallic NPs are applicable in biosensing, bioimaging and biomedicine.

Abstract:Nanotechnology is a highly promising field, with nanoparticles produced and utilized in a wide range of commercial products. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) has been widely used in clothing, electronics, bio-sensing, the food industry, paints, sunscreens, cosmetics and medical devices, all of which increase human exposure and thus the potential risk related to their short- and long-term toxicity. Many studies indicate that AgNPs are toxic to human health. Interestingly, the majority of these studies focus on the interaction of the nano-silver particle with single cells, indicating that AgNPs have the potential to induce the genes associated with cell cycle progression, DNA damage and mitochondrial associated apoptosis. AgNPs administered through any method were subsequently detected in blood and were found to cause deposition in several organs. There are very few studies in rats and mice involving the in vivo bio-distribution and toxicity, organ accumulation and degradation, and the possible adverse effects and toxicity in vivo are only slowly being recognized. In the present review, we summarize the current data associated with the increased medical usage of nano-silver and its related nano-materials, compare the mechanism of antibiosis and discuss the proper application of nano-silver particles.

Abstract:Present worldwide difficulties in healthcare and the environment have motivated the investigation and research of novel materials in an effort to find novel techniques to address the current challenges and requirements. In particular, the use of nanomaterials has demonstrated a significant promise in the fight against bacterial infections and the problem of antibiotic resistance. Metal nanoparticles and carbon-based nanomaterials in particular have been highlighted for their exceptional abilities to inhibit many types of bacteria and pathogens. In order for these materials to be as effective as possible, synthetic techniques are crucial. Therefore, in this review article, we highlight some recent developments in the design and synthesis of various nanomaterials, including metal nanoparticles (e.g., Ag, Zn, or Cu), metal hybrid nanomaterials, and the synthesis of multi-metallic hybrid nanostructured materials. Following that, examples of these materials’ applications in antimicrobial performance targeted at eradicating multi-drug resistant bacteria, material protection such as microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC), or additives in construction materials have been described.

Abstract:Nanomaterials with unique physical and chemical properties have attracted extensive attention of scientific research and will play an increasingly important role in the future development of science and technology. With the gradual deepening of research, noble metal nanomaterials have been applied in the fields of new energy materials, photoelectric information storage, and nano-enhanced catalysis due to their unique optical, electrical and catalytic properties. Nanostructured materials formed by noble metal elements (Au, Ag, etc.) exhibit remarkable photoelectric properties, good stability and low biotoxicity, which received extensive attention in chemical and biological sensing field and achieved significant research progress. In this paper, the research on the synthesis, modification and sensing application of the existing noble metal nanomaterials is reviewed in detail, which provides a theoretical guidance for further research on the functional properties of such nanostructured materials and their applications of other nanofields.

Abstract:<p>Microbial colonization on material surfaces is ubiquitous. Biofilms derived from surface‐colonized microbes pose serious problems to the society from both an economical perspective and a health concern. Incorporation of antimicrobial nanocompounds within or on the surface of materials, or by coatings, to prevent microbial adhesion or kill the microorganisms after their attachment to biofilms, represents an important strategy in an increasingly challenging field. Over the last decade, many studies have been devoted to preparing meta‐based nanomaterials that possess antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal activities to combat pathogen‐related diseases. Herein, an overview on the state‐of‐the‐art antimicrobial nanosized metal‐based compounds is provided, including metal and metal oxide nanoparticles as well as transition metal nanosheets. The antimicrobial mechanism of these nanostructures and their biomedical applications such as catheters, implants, medical delivery systems, tissue engineering, and dentistry are discussed. Their properties as well as potential caveats such as cytotoxicity, diminishing efficacy, and induction of antimicrobial resistance of materials incorporating these nanostructures are reviewed to provide a backdrop for future research.</p>

Abstract:Nanoparticles (nanoparticles) have received much attention in biological application because of their unique physicochemical properties. The metal- and metal oxide–supported nanomaterials have shown significant therapeutic effect in medical science. The mechanisms related to the interaction of nanoparticles with animal and plant cells can be used to establish its significant role and to improve their activity in health and medical applications. Various attempts have been made to discuss the antibiotic resistance and antimicrobial activity of metal-supported nanoparticles. Despite all these developments, there is still a need to investigate their performance to overcome modern challenges. In this regard, the present review examines the role of various types of metal-supported nanomaterials in different areas such as antibacterial, antifungal, anticancer, and so on. Based on the significant ongoing research and applications, it is expected that metal-supported nanomaterials play an outstanding role not only in medical but also in other important areas.

Abstract:Nowadays, coinage metal nanoclusters (NCs) are largely presented in diagnostics, bioimaging, and biocatalysis due to their high biocompatibility, chemical stability, and sensitivity to surrounding biomolecules. Silver and gold NCs are usually characterized by intense luminescence and photostability, which is in great demand in the detection of organic compounds, ions, pH, temperature, etc. The experimental synthesis of metal NCs often occurs on biopolymer templates, mostly DNA and proteins. However, this review mainly focuses on the interactions with small biomolecules (SBMs) of a molecular weight less than 1000 Da: amino acids, nucleobases, thiolates, oligopeptides, etc. Such molecules can serve as the templates for an eco-friendly facile one-pot synthesis of biocompatible luminescent NCs. The latter aspect makes NCs suitable for diagnostics and intracellular bioimaging. Another important aspect is the interaction of clusters with biomarkers, which is largely exploited by nanosensors: biomarker detection often occurs through either fluorescence emission "turn-on" or "turn-off" mechanisms. Moreover, as theoretical studies show, electronic absorption spectra and Raman spectra of the metal-organic complexes allow efficient detection of various analytes. In this regard, both theoretical and experimental studies of SBM complexes with metal NCs are in great demand. Therefore, this review aims to summarize up-to-date studies on the interaction of small biomolecules with coinage metal NCs from both theoretical and experimental viewpoints.

Abstract:Over the past few decades, metal nanoparticles less than 100 nm in diameter have made a substantial impact across diverse biomedical applications, such as diagnostic and medical devices, for personalized healthcare practice. In particular, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have great potential in a broad range of applications as antimicrobial agents, biomedical device coatings, drug-delivery carriers, imaging probes, and diagnostic and optoelectronic platforms, since they have discrete physical and optical properties and biochemical functionality tailored by diverse size- and shape-controlled AgNPs. In this review, we aimed to present major routes of synthesis of AgNPs, including physical, chemical, and biological synthesis processes, along with discrete physiochemical characteristics of AgNPs. We also discuss the underlying intricate molecular mechanisms behind their plasmonic properties on mono/bimetallic structures, potential cellular/microbial cytotoxicity, and optoelectronic property. Lastly, we conclude this review with a summary of current applications of AgNPs in nanoscience and nanomedicine and discuss their future perspectives in these areas.

Abstract:Noble metal nanomaterials have been studied by many researchers for their ultra-small size, excellent photophysical properties and good biocompatibility. Metal nanoclusters are a kind of nanoscale ultrafine particle, which have completely different properties from macroscopic metals. In the visible region, they do not usually show the characteristic surface plasmon resonance absorption but instead show fluorescence in the visible to near infrared region. In particular, the noble metallic (Au, Ag, Cu, etc) nanoclusters (NMNCs) have broad application prospects in the field of biomedicine as probes for fluorescence sensing. Their strong photoluminescence, living cell compatibility, and easy availability make up for the shortcomings of traditional fluorescent probes such as organic fluorescent dyes, fluorescent proteins, and fluorescent quantum dots. In this review, we summarize the synthetic method and application of metal nanoclusters as fluorescent probes in bio-sensing and imaging, especially in the early diagnosis of cancer cells.

Abstract:The manipulation of matter at the atomic level (nanotechnology) has experienced an explosion in research interest in recent years. Bimetallic nanoparticles are vital due to their high biocompatibility, stability and comparatively less toxicity. The synthesis methods that include physical, chemical and biological methods are explored and explained in detail, along with their advantages. They have a wide range of applications due to their synergistic properties including biological applications (in medicine and agriculture), environmental application (in water treatment and removal of toxic contaminants), engineering application (in nanosensors, nanochips and nano-semiconductors) and chemical and physical application (in optics, catalysis and paints). The green synthesis approach is a promising method of synthesis that can give rise to more biocompatible and less toxic bimetallic nanoparticles due to increasing environmental pollution. However, despite these interesting attributes of bimetallic nanoparticle, there is still much work to be done to improve the biocompatibility of bimetallic nanoparticles because of their toxicity and potentially hazardous effects.

Abstract:Silvetr and gold nanoparticles-based colorimetric sensors (Ag/Au-NPs-CSns) allow potential prospects for the development of efficient sensors owing to their unique shape- and size-dependent optical properties. In this review, recent (2020) advances in morphology-controllable synthesis, shape/size-dependent performance, sensing mechanism, challenges and prospects of Ag/Au-NPs-CSns for the detection of heavy metals are discussed. The size/shape-controlled synthesis of innovative Ag/Au-NPs-CSns is reviewed critically and the possible role of different parameters like temperature, time, pH, stabilizing/capping agents, reducing agents and concentration/nature of precursors are discussed. Then, we highlighted how the shape, size, optimum composition, functionalization, stabilizing/capping agents, surface structure and synergism influence the optical properties and sensing efficiency of Ag/Au-NPs-CSns. This review attempted to accentuate the efficiency of novel multimetallic Ag/AuNPs-CSns as compare to their monometallic counterparts and explained how the incorporation of multi-metals affects their performance. Besides, the sensing mechanisms of Ag/Au-NPs-CSns with special reference to recently published studies are discussed. Finally, challenges and prospects in the controllable-synthesis and practical applications of these sensors are studied. This mechanistic approach and timely review can be promisingly considered as a valuable reference and will help fuel new ideas for the development of novel colorimetric sensors. Abstract:The rapid development of multidrug resistance in a wide range of microorganisms poses a significant clinical challenge for healthcare professionals treating infectious diseases. Over the last decade, research has focused on the preparation of metal-based nanomaterials with antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal activities to combat communicable diseases. Several metal nanomaterials, such as gold, copper, silver, palladium, and metal oxides, such as titanium, zinc, and iron, have demonstrated encouraging antimicrobial properties against multidrug-resistant microorganisms. The nano–bio interaction of metal nanoparticles are particularly influenced by their physicochemical properties, including shape, size, surface charge, ligand capping, doping, pH stability, roughness, and crystal structure. Once interacting, nanoparticles exert their biocidal effects through various pathways, such as enhanced intracellular reactive oxygen species, cell membrane damage, membrane potential depolarization, DNA damage, biofilm destabilization followed by interactions with biofilm components. However, a clear understanding of the connection between the specific physicochemical properties and antimicrobial mechanisms of metal nanoparticles is lacking. Thus this comprehensive review article discusses different fundamental aspects of nano–bio interactions of metal nanoparticles with planktonic as well as biofilm form of bacteria, the associated antimicrobial mechanisms along with recent advancements and therapeutic challenges.

Abstract:Copper (Cu) is an inexpensive transition metal on Earth, exhibiting high catalytic activity due to its rich d-electron configuration and variable oxidation states. Cu-based biological alloys and nanocomposites have emerged as a prominent research area. Under specific synthesis conditions, alloys or nanocomposites formed by Cu with other metals demonstrate excellent enzyme-like and sensing activities. These advanced materials offer significant advantages over artificial enzymes in enzymatic applications, including high stability, simple synthesis, flexible catalytic performance, and ease of preservation. In addition, various types of sensors have been designed based on the unique electrochemical properties exhibited by these alloys and nanocomposites as well as their specific reactions with the target substances. These sensors possess advantages such as stability, high efficiency, a broad detection range, low detection limits, and high sensitivity. In this review, we summarize the current research status of Cu-based biological alloys and nanocomposites in enzyme-like applications and sensing applications. Based on this, we introduce the diverse enzyme-like activities exhibited by Cu-based nanozymes prepared under different synthesis conditions and their applications in areas such as biosensing, cancer treatment, and antibacterial therapy. Furthermore, we provide an overview of the applications of Cu-based alloys and nanocomposites in the field of sensing based on their enzyme-like activity or chemical activities. These sensors have been widely employed in biomedical detection, environmental hazardous substance monitoring, and food safety testing. Challenges and prospects faced by Cu-based alloys and nanocomposites are also highlighted for future works.

Abstract:The aim of this review is to gather current researches into sensors based on noble metal and semiconductor nanomaterials in biomedical detection and elucidate the basic principle and applications of different sorts of semiconductor nanomaterials, i.e., metal oxide NPs, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and magnetic metal oxide (MMO) NPs. Based on the classifications of nano-biosensors, they can be summarized as electrochemical nano-biosensors, optical nano-biosensors, calorimetric nano-biosensors, and piezoelectric nano-biosensors, wherein, electrochemical and optical nano-biosensors acting as most popular study objects are focused on to excavate the great improvements in excellent sensitivity, selectivity and stability based on fabrication techniques.

Abstract:In comparison with natural enzymes, nanozymes show many advantages such as high stability, ease to mass production and tunable enzymatic properties and possess great potentials for application in detection and biosensing fields. Especially, noble metal based nanozymes usually exhibit superior catalytic activity and stability. The achievements in precisely synthesizing noble metal -based nanomaterials at atomic levels enable investigation of interaction mechanisms between structures and enzymatic performances. In this review, the development of noble metal based nanozymes were sumarized, including noble metal nanocrystals and noble metal based single -atom nanozymes. The preparation strategies, regulation methods of enzymatic properties and underlying mechanisms were mainly discussed. The applications for detection and biosensing were also elucidated. At last, the challenges and prospects of this area were briefly discussed.

Abstract:To date, there are no antimicrobial agents available in the market that have absolute control over the growing threat of bacterial strains. The increase in the production capacity of antibiotics and the growing antibacterial resistance of bacteria have majorly affected a variety of businesses and public health. Bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) with two separate metals have been found to have stronger antibacterial potential than their monometallic versions. This enhanced antibacterial efficiency of bimetallic nanoparticles is due to the synergistic effect of their participating monometallic counterparts. To distinguish between bacteria and mammals, the existence of diverse metal transport systems and metalloproteins is necessary for the use of bimetallic Au-Ag NPs, just like any other metal NPs. Due to their very low toxicity toward human cells, these bimetallic NPs, particularly gold-silver NPs, might prove to be an effective weapon in the arsenal to beat emerging drug-resistant bacteria. The cellular mechanism of bimetallic nanoparticles for antibacterial activity consists of cell membrane degradation, disturbance in homeostasis, oxidative stress, and the production of reactive oxygen species. The synthesis of bimetallic nanoparticles can be performed by a bottom-up and top-down strategy. The bottom-up technique generally includes sol-gel, chemical vapor deposition, green synthesis, and co-precipitation methods, whereas the top-down technique includes the laser ablation method. This review highlights the key prospects of the cellular mechanism, synthesis process, and antibacterial capabilities against a wide range of bacteria. Additionally, we also discussed the role of Au-Ag NPs in the treatment of multidrug-resistant bacterial infection and wound healing.
