Abstract:Aging is one of the most important challenges of our times. As stated by United Nations’ report on 1983, “Policies to meet the challenge of a growing, healthier and more active seniors population -based on the view of the ageing of society as an opportunity to be utilized -automatically benefit the individual ageing person, materially and otherwise. Similarly, any effort to ameliorate the quality of life for the seniors, and to meet their diverse social and cultural needs, enhances their capacity to continue interacting with society”. Aging society provides not only a new context, but a new opportunity to rethink our traditional views of age. The growing number of seniors people will soon make the majority of overall population. As noticed by reports of international organizations, cities will play a more important role in dealing with these quantitative and cultural changes, mostly because it is expected that a quarter of the population over 60 will be concentrating in the central areas of compact cities. In brief, cities are at once growing and aging at an incredible speed. Although aging process represents a fundamental and structural phenomenon with very deep consequences at economic, social and political level, and with an impact on the individual one as on the society as whole, our cities should deal with this process and respond, in terms of public health and social care, to needs of older people, also those that will experience a loss of autonomy. It is important to note that there are a greater heterogeneity within older population in terms of conditions and demands, which depend on their specific personal, social and familial context. Urban space - in its complex differentiation between public space, third space, and private space - represents both a tool and a strategic factor in pursuing the objective of ensuring high levels of widespread well-being and, from a political perspective, fully shaping the right to the city for seniors individuals.

Abstract:Efforts to make cities and communities more age-friendly have gained signiifcant momentum in recent years. Population aging and increased urbanization have challenged governments and other civic organizations to consider how best to develop a community that is accessible for all of its residents. This article provides a general overview to current age-friendly cities elements, features, and initiatives that have influenced the age-friendly movement. It briefly discusses the opportunities and challenges in cities and communities, which their stakeholders might encounter in their age-friendly efforts. Successful examples are addressed to demonstrate the age-friendly initiative in western country. It also makes summarize for urban policies, and suggestions for the future age-friendly city and community planning and construction in China.

Abstract:Population aging is one of the most significant demographic transformations of the 21st century, since aging brings about changes in the functional capacity of the human being. Over the years, the level of independence and autonomy for carrying out daily activities diminishes, and, thereby, the relationship of the elderly with the environment changes as the person ages, directly affecting the mobility and life quality of this population. In 2007, the World Health Organization (WHO) published the document "Global age-friendly cities: A guide", which presents some strategies for promoting active aging and for the place of residence of the elderly. It proposes that the city ́s structure and the public policies directed towards this public shall be integrated with the community ́s life. In order to understand how the concept of an age-friendly city has been applied to evaluate cities in different countries, a systematic review was carried out in the Scopus database, based on articles published between 2015 and 2021. The analysis of 38 articles has made it possible to identify that the study field of the quality of the urban environment for the elderly population is new, calling for deeper studies, which includes the development of more adequate methods for evaluating this profile in the cities. The articles analyzed deal with the concept in different ways, but one of the main similarities is related to the use of the method of data collection through interviews and, in spite of using the tool indicated in the document, none applied the methodology proposed by the WHO.

Abstract:Understanding the relationship between population ageing and urban change has become a major issue for public policy. An emerging theme has concerned the need to develop supportive urban communities for older citizens. This paper provides a critical perspective on the development of ‘age-friendly cities and communities’ by exploring such policies in the context of urban change arising from globalisation, urban regeneration and austerity. A key argument is that research and policies on age-friendly cities require stronger integration with analyses of the impact of global forces transforming the physical and social context of cities. This theme is developed by examining: first, the arguments behind the development of the ‘age-friendly’ approach; second, the pressures affecting urban environments; and third, challenges for improving the urban environment for older populations. The article concludes by discussing the need to combine a conceptual model of ‘age-friendliness’ with analysis of the economic and social forces transforming urban environments.

Abstract:The confluence of rapid population aging and the overwhelming desire of older adults to age in place begs the question: Do our cities support the health and well-being of aging populations? Using a neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood approach, this macro-scale investigation explores the "double risk" that many older adults live with - the potential of being disadvantaged by socio-demographic risk factors (being older, living alone, low income) and by living in an unsupportive built environment. It is an integration of what we know about supportive built form for older adults and applies this knowledge to Canadian cities, using a spectrum approach to classifying built environments. We found that most older adults with socio-demographic risk factors are living in unsupportive built environments in Canada; however, the distribution between built environments along the spectrum and between municipalities reveals a variegated landscape of double risk. Previous research suggests that unsupportive built environments can be supplemented with services, small-scale improvements in the built environment, and larger-scale retrofitting of neighbourhoods. Since the spatial distribution of vulnerability varies greatly within the 33 Canadian cities analysed, it highlights the need for this kind of inquiry to target age-friendly policy interventions.

Abstract:This paper investigates the relationship between public spaces and quality of life (QoL) for older adults, aiming to identify knowledge gaps within the context of population ageing and urbanisation. Recognising the growing importance of sustainable urban development, the research explores how cities can foster active ageing and improve QoL through accessible and inclusive public spaces. A scoping literature review identifies five key QoL domains for older adults: autonomy, meaningful activities, positive social relationships, leisure opportunities, and health. To identify knowledge gaps, a review of the literature was conducted for each of the highlighted themes. The review highlights areas requiring further investigation, including the interplay between environmental design and social connections, intergenerational perspectives on public space liveliness, the influence of context on QoL and the built environment, and the value of qualitative research in this field. By contributing to the understanding of QoL in relation to public spaces through the lens of person–environment fit theory, this study aims to inform urban design, landscape architecture, and policymaking in the creation of age-friendly communities with inclusive public spaces.

Abstract:The development of ‘age-friendly cities’ has become a major area of work in the field of ageing and the built environment. This movement is driven by the observation that cities are home to an ever-increasing ageing population. Over the past decade, a multitude of age-friendly initiatives have been developed with the aim of making physical and social environments more favourable for older people's well-being, health and ability to live in the community. This article explores ten key questions associated with the age-friendly cities and communities' movement, with a particular focus on the built environment. It provides an overview of the history of the age-friendly cities' movement and the underlying models, the aspects of the built environment that are relevant for age-friendly cities, the ways age-friendliness can be evaluated, and the interactions between age-friendly cities initiatives and other strategic agendas such as smart cities. The paper concludes by discussing future perspectives and possible directions for further development of the age-friendly movement.

Abstract:This study maps and discusses the status of the age-friendly community movement in a United States (U.S.) residential-geographic context using the AARP Livability Index and Hamilton County, Ohio, as a case study. The framework for the construction of this index shares multiple commonalities with the World Health Organization’s widely adopted Age-Friendly Cities and Communities framework. Via visual inspection of maps and spatial analytics, this study compares geographic locations and spatial patterns of census tracts in terms of their residence desirability for older adults based on the Livability Index and actual residence locations of adults aged 65+ in Hamilton County. The comparison reveals that the actual residence locations of older adults differ from those that are most desirable. Given this difference between actual location choices and ideal or age-friendly residential environments, the age-friendly movement needs to discuss the gap between its framework, exemplified here by the AARP Livability Index, and reality to promote and implement its policies more effectively, especially in the U.S.

Abstract:The world’s population is aging quickly, yet the social environment and most local infrastructure are not designed to assist the elderly. This is due to the possibility that older persons may exhibit distinct characteristics in their everyday travel behavior, related to age and physical capacity. In order to support older individuals, social infrastructure needs to be defined in a consistent and quantifiable manner. More research is needed to understand the connection between infrastructure and community health, well-being, and liveability. A global goal in population aging planning is to ensure an enabling and supportive environment. This essay examines the aging population in cities and how the structure of the urban environment interacts with the surrounding social milieu. By analyzing the mobility of the senior population in social infrastructure planning, through inclusive design and inclusive theory models, we aim to create infrastructure more in line with the needs and spontaneity of older inhabitants. Using a unique analytical framework, the technique of liquidity, and social infrastructure, this research examines the shifting dynamics of communities and the value of place for older persons living in places undergoing socio-economic redevelopment. The paper argues that social infrastructure must be seen as a key element of urban regeneration planning, ensuring that new spaces foster social connections across generations and support a sense of local identity, belonging, and inclusion among older residents despite significant physical transformation. This article offers fresh suggestions for government organizations and planners to address the issues of aging.

Abstract:People above 65 years of age, are confronted with several issues that limit them from fully participating in society and exercising their rights to accessing the local environment. But older people's ability to travel independently and freely to participate in society is crucial for their quality of life. The question of how to maintain mobility equity and equality for older people is, however, a complex one. This is because older people, especially those with disabilities, are often faced with mobility exclusion due to physical barriers around the public transportation and built environment. This has been further intensified as existing mobility accessibility initiatives employed by municipalities have not involved vulnerable groups in society such as older people. Therefore, this study adopts a systematic literature review based on data collected from 83 sources indexed in Scopus and Web of Science database. The findings from this article present factors that influence the local environment in achieving mobility equity and equality from the perspectives of older people, living without and with disabilities. Evidence from this study proposes guidelines grounded on a universal design framework to help municipalities foster mobility equity and equality for older people based on recommendations provided to inform urban transport policies on universal accessibility.

Abstract:Population ageing is creating opportunities and challenges for many communities across the globe, as one in six people is expected to be older than 65 by 2050. Initiatives to develop age-friendly communities (AFC) have increased in popularity for more than two decades. While the physical environment and outdoor spaces are recognized as the core domain of the concept of AFC in the literature, most articles are published in the journals of ageing, gerontology, health and social policy and not in mainstream urban planning or design journals. The aim of the paper is to examine the spatial interventions and built-environment related discussions in the scholarly literature in the realm of AFC in the fields of landscape architecture and urban planning and identify gaps in the literature with the focus on spatial interventions. In addition, this paper aims to call urban planners and designers to action to be more engaged in the discussions and implementation of age-friendliness of communities. Findings suggest that urban planners and designers have the ability and power to contribute to the implementation of AFCs by raising awareness, changing attitude towards ageing issues, develop networks and collaboration, increase empathy, initiate and change policies, and put policies into action.

Abstract:At present, the aging population in cities is growing sharply, and the problem of elderly-oriented urban public spaces is gradually coming to the fore and urgently needs noticing and addressing. As an illustration, we may take Dazhou City as an example. Conclusion can be drew form the questionnaires and offline visits that the elderly generally have difficulties in traveling, shopping and medical care, affected by the lack of community infrastructure, their physical condition, living habits and knowledge structure, etc. We propose to improve the adaptability of the elderly, build a comprehensive system of elderly services, create an elderly-oriented urban space as well as an atmosphere of respect for them to level their well-being index up and settle the issue of elderly-oriented retrofitting of urban public space.
A Critical Approach to Aging in Place: A Case Study Comparison of Personal and Professional Perspectives from the Minneapolis Metropolitan Area

Abstract:The concept of aging in place attracts older adults, scholars, policymakers, and service providers alike. Interviews with 125 independent-dwelling men and women (mean age 71 years) and ten policymakers/community service providers queried for elements of urban and suburban contexts that strengthen or weaken desires and abilities to age in place. Overall, interviewees emphasized the need for accessible and affordable housing, reliable services, robust transportation infrastructure, and suitable options for health and care. Perspectives of low-income participants diverged notably from mainstream conceptions: those in perilous-subsidized housing desired to move to safer and more comfortable settings and homeless participants did not have a stable home or community to age in place. Planning and implementation of aging in place framed in highly individualistic, resourced, and ableist conception did not address their everyday struggles, including the lack of affordable housing and defunding of supportive social services. The manuscript complicates idealized notions of aging in place and suggests new theoretical and empirical directions to expand the concept to become more inclusive and socially just.
"What Does 'Age-Friendly' Mean to You?": The Role of Microaggressions in a Retirement and Assisted Living Community

Abstract:Background and objectives: In conversations about expanding age-friendly ecosystems, the concept of "age-friendliness" has not been explored in relation to residential settings. Research design and methods: This multiple-case study compared four residents' perspectives on the age-friendliness of a retirement and assisted living community, combining individual semi-structured interviews with observational data and organizational document analyses in a contextualist thematic examination. Results: Three themes depict (A) existing experiences of the setting as "age-friendly" and the tension of the built design vs. identity; (B) resident-to-resident microaggressions, delineated into 4 subthemes including identity-related, intergenerational, condition-related microaggressions, and their influence on social isolation; and (C) desired experiences of the setting as "age-friendly" reflecting the social design. In cases of visibly perceptible diversity (white cane, darker skin tone), residents fared worse in experiencing microaggressions stemming from ableism, racism, and age differences. Conversely, in cases of visibly imperceptible diversity, residents had more positive or entirely positive experiences. Although the setting met many environmental and healthcare needs, it lacked design factors prioritizing meaningful social relationships among residents, affecting social isolation. Discussion and implications: Resident-to-resident social relationships were key in the experience of a retirement and assisted living community as age-friendly. Resident-to-resident microaggressions undermined perceptions of the community as age-friendly, and influenced social isolation. We reflect on the organizational role in mitigating against negative social relationships and social isolation to maximize dignity.

Current problems of architecture and urban planning

Abstract:The article describes the trends in demographic changes of the world’s modern population, which will affect its habitats in the future, among which are urbanization and population aging. The publication also describes main aspects of making cities age-friendly, according to research by the World Health Organization. It offers methods of improving the quality of third age citizens’ lifes by creating cohousing community urban rental apartments, using new approaches in the placement of social housing in the city structure and regeneration of existing housing estates on the example of implemented projects in Brussels and Manchester. The main aim of the article is to determine and characterize the most common problems of elderly around the world and to propose the ways of its solving by using new approaches in urban planning and architectural design. It considers the island type of social housing construction and structuring of its space in three levels, describes the importance of every inhabitant’s private space. This publication presents kinds of public spaces’ exploitation and its best location depending on functioning. The choices of transparent constructions and natural materials’ use in private zones’ separating are also given here. The article suggests ways of redeveloping neighborhoods, which have been declined over years by construction of new inclusive housing estates on the example of Collyhurst regeneration project.

Abstract:The world’s population is aging and becoming more urbanized. Public space in urban areas is vital for improving the health of the elderly by stimulating social interaction. Many urban design projects are advertised as age-friendly but ignore the real needs of the elderly, especially elderly women, for social interaction in urban public spaces. Insufficient attention is paid to the physical and psychological characteristics of elderly women when shaping public space. This analysis addresses the question: What are the qualities of urban spaces which facilitate health-improving social interaction for elderly women? Methods include a case study in Beijing, field investigation, mapping, and qualitative and quantitative analysis. The survey was carried out in April 2021, and concerned 240 women aged 55–75 years. Results indicate that the social interactions of older women relate to both their physical and psychological situations. Public spaces can positively impact the psychological well-being and social participation of elderly women. Conclusions include insights regarding the relationship between social interaction and well-being among elderly women, as well as proposing a series of principles for shaping public spaces for an age-friendly urban environment.
