RAINWATER RUNOFF POLLUTANT REMOVAL EXPERIMENT USING A CERAMIC PERMEABLE BRICK SYSTEM WITH A FRAME STRUCTURE BASE

Abstract:To increase pollution removal by the base layer and further improve the water quality of effluent, a ceramic permeable brick and three typical fillers were applied to construct a frame structure brick paving system for the removal of pollutants. Initial and final measurements for contaminants such as SS, TP, NH3-N, TN, COD, and heavy metals were taken in column experiments. The results demonstrated that the ceramic permeable brick had a good mitigation effect on SS, TP, Zn, Cu and Pb and a relatively poor mitigation effect on COD, NH3-N and TN. The mitigation effects on SS, TP, NH3-N, TN, COD, Zn, Cu, and Pb in the brick paving system filled with small particle-sized gravel were 10.52%, 8.97%, 2.00%, 1.17%, 3.22%, 8.88%, 6.05%, and 8.83% greater, respectively, than the effect with large particles-sized gravel. The mitigation effects on SS, TP, NH3-N, TN, COD, Zn, Cu, and Pb in the brick paving system filled with zeolite were 7.78%, 12.28%, 16.03%, 8.72%, 13.15%, 11.17%, 9.27% and 11.92% greater, respectively, than the effect with gravel of the same diameter. These results occurred mainly because the small particle-sized gravel layer was more compact, rendering it more conducive to the filtration and retention of pollutants. Additionally, the zeolite enhanced the removal of rainwater runoff pollutants through adsorption.
