Abstract:In this study, pyrolysis of microalgal remnants was investigated for recovery of energy and nutrients. Chlorella vulgaris biomass was first solvent-extracted for lipid recovery then the remnants were used as the feedstock for fast pyrolysis experiments using a fluidized bed reactor at 500 °C. Yields of bio-oil, biochar, and gas were 53, 31, and 10 wt.%, respectively. Bio-oil from C. vulgaris remnants was a complex mixture of aromatics and straight-chain hydrocarbons, amides, amines, carboxylic acids, phenols, and other compounds with molecular weights ranging from 70 to 1200 Da. Structure and surface topography of the biochar were analyzed. The high inorganic content (potassium, phosphorous, and nitrogen) of the biochar suggests it may be suitable to provide nutrients for crop production. The bio-oil and biochar represented 57% and 36% of the energy content of the microalgae remnant feedstock, respectively.
Valorization of Rejected Macroalgae Kappaphycopsis cottonii for Bio-Oil and Bio-Char Production via Slow Pyrolysis

Abstract:Kappaphycopsis cottonii, a prominent macroalgae species cultivated in an Indonesian marine culture, yields significant biomass, a portion of which is often rejected by industry. This study explores the potential valorization of rejected K. cottonii biomass through slow pyrolysis for bio-oil and biochar production, presenting an alternative and sustainable utilization pathway. The study utilizes a batch reactor setup for the thermal decomposition of K. cottonii, conducted at temperatures between 400 and 600 °C and varying time intervals between 10 and 50 min. The study elucidates the temperature-dependent behavior of K. cottonii during slow pyrolysis, emphasizing its impact on product distributions. The results suggest that there is a rise in bio-oil production when the pyrolysis temperature is raised from 400 to 500 °C. This uptick is believed to be due to improved dehydration and greater thermal breakdown of the algal biomass. Conversely, at 600 °C, bio-oil yield diminishes, indicating secondary cracking of liquid products and the generation of noncondensable gases. Chemical analysis of bio-oils reveals substantial quantities of furan derivatives, aliphatic hydrocarbons, and carboxylic acids. Biochar exhibits calorific values within the range of 17.52-19.46 MJ kg-1, and slow pyrolysis enhances its specific surface area, accompanied by the observation of carbon nanostructures. The study not only investigates product yields but also deduces plausible reaction routes for the generation of certain substances throughout the process of slow pyrolysis. Overall, the slow pyrolysis of rejected K. cottonii presents an opportunity to obtain valuable chemicals and biochar. These products hold promise for applications such as biofuels and diverse uses in wastewater treatment, catalysis, and adsorption, contributing to both environmental mitigation and the circular economy.

Abstract:Ulva Lactuca is a fast-growing algae that can be utilized as a bioenergy source. However, the direct utilization of U. lactuca for energy applications still remains challenging due to its high moisture and inorganics content. Therefore, thermochemical processing such as slow pyrolysis to produce valuable added products, namely bio-oil and biochar, is needed. This study aims to conduct a thorough investigation of bio-oil and biochar production from U. lactuca to provide valuable data for its further valorization. A slow pyrolysis of U. lactuca was conducted in a batch-type reactor at a temperature range of 400–600 °C and times of 10–50 min. The results showed that significant compounds obtained in U. lactuca’s bio-oil are carboxylic acids (22.63–35.28%), phenolics (9.73–31.89%), amines/amides (15.33–23.31%), and N-aromatic compounds (14.04–15.68%). The ultimate analysis revealed that biochar’s H/C and O/C atomic ratios were lower than feedstock, confirming that dehydration and decarboxylation reactions occurred throughout the pyrolysis. Additionally, biochar exhibited calorific values in the range of 19.94–21.61 MJ kg−1, which is potential to be used as a solid renewable fuel. The surface morphological analysis by scanning electron microscope (SEM) showed a larger surface area in U. lactuca’s biochar than in the algal feedstock. Overall, this finding provides insight on the valorization of U. lactuca for value-added chemicals, i.e., biofuels and biochar, which can be further utilized for other applications.

Abstract:Pyrolysis of biomass residues into biochar is seen as a feasible way to mitigate climate change by biological carbon storage (carbon dioxide removal, CDR) and to substitute fossil fuel with sustainable biofuel. This study applies a combination of flash and ramp heating pyrolysis, and organic petrography to investigate the hydrocarbon (biofuel) potential and biochar stability and morphotypes of eight brown, red, and green macroalgal species of different tissue complexity. The carbon stability of biochar derived from macroalgae has not previously been assessed using organic petrography (reflectance measurements) and evaluated in the context of the geological carbon cycle. The biochar, hydrocarbon, and CO + CO 2 yields vary due to different chemical composition of the macroalgal species, but the product yield variations are not related to the brown, red, or green macroalgal groups. The total biofuel yield shows an inverse trend with biochar yield. A slower heating rate produces more biochar and higher CO + CO 2 and lower biofuel yields than the combined flash pyrolysis and faster heating rate. The morphotype composition of the biochar was qualitatively examined by reflected light microscopy while carbon stability was assessed by random reflectance (R o ) measurements. The diverse morphotype compositions observed in biochar formed under similar pyrolysis conditions likely stem from variations in the original algal composition. While some biochar samples show morphologies resembling the original macroalgal structure, porous morphotypes predominantly characterize the biochar samples overall. Despite a maximum pyrolysis production temperature (PT) of 650 °C, the highest mean R o value among all biochar samples is 2.91%, corresponding to a carbonization temperature (CT) of 526 °C. This observation tentatively suggests the less lignocellulosic structure of the macroalgae compared to terrigenous biomass. Four biochar samples have their entire R o distribution range above the inertinite benchmark (IBR o 2%) of R o = 2% indicating high carbon stability. Conversely, the remaining four biochar samples exhibit R o distributions extending below IBR o 2%, indicating the presence of a carbon fraction with lower long-term stability in soil. The statistically significant inverse relationship observed between the mean R o values and the peak hydrocarbon generation temperature (T max ) can be attributed to the behavior of residual macromolecules within the biochar. When these macromolecules reach peak biofuel generation at a lower temperature, they undergo carbonization over a more extended time interval during pyrolysis. Consequently, this prolonged exposure to the pyrolysis process leads to higher degrees of carbonization, as reflected by higher R o values. In conclusion, the findings from pyrolysis and organic petrographic reveal: (1) Macroalgae demonstrate potential for biofuel production, although biofuel yields contingent upon both the species of macroalgal and the heating rate employed, and (2) This study documents for the first time that flash+ramp pyrolysis of macroalgae yields biochar suitable for long-term carbon storage. However, both the carbon stability inferred from R o frequency distributions and biochar yields show variations across different macroalgal species and heating rate.

Abstract:The macroalgae residue from the industrial agar extraction process contains a significant amount of carbon and has potential as a renewable feedstock. Unfortunately, it is often overlooked and is poorly utilized. This study aims to valorize this macroalgae residue through pyrolysis to produce silica‐rich biochar and other value‐added products in the form of biocrude oil (BCO) and biopyrolysis gas. The macroalgae residue was pyrolyzed at 300–700 °C with a heating rate of 20–40 °C/min. Yields of biochar, BCO, and gas of 62%, 25%, and 13% were obtained at a temperature of 700 °C and a heating rate of 20 °C/min. Biochar has a porous structure, a surface area exceeding 15 m2/g, and is dominated by amorphous silica of up to 13%. This silica‐rich biochar also contains Na and K, which hold potential benefits in agriculture, serving as soil ameliorants and playing a crucial role in enhancing soil fertility and promoting plant growth. In the meantime, BCO contains 29.3% carboxylic acid group as the most important chemical component. Other than that, the biopyrolysis gas contains mainly CH4 and H2 (up to 24–32%), which can act as chemical building blocks. Finally, a simple business scenario of silica‐rich biochar production reveals that it has a specific cost of 0.37 US$/kg. It could be economically viable as a soil ameliorant or fertilizer. However, challenges persist in scaling up production to an industrial scale.

Abstract:This paper examines the feasibility of pyrolyzing the macroalgae sargassum, in a single-mode microwave cavity. Sargassum permittivities were measured and demonstrate the necessity of using a microwave absorber to help in reaching efficient pyrolysis. Silicon carbide, which is commonly used, and sargassum biochar, which has never been used before as a microwave absorber, were added to the system and their efficiencies were compared. Based on our experimental results, the high permittivity of sargassum biochar makes it a good microwave absorber. In comparison to the silicon carbide derived bio-oil, the sargassum biochar-derived bio-oil is of higher quality due to its lower acidity. Both microwave absorbers produce H 2 and CO rich biogas, but the biogas production is higher when biochar is used as an absorber. A complete analysis of the bio-oil components was done and confirms the less acidic character of the oil produced using biochar and the higher proportion of oxidized compounds produced with SiC.

Abstract:The aim of this work was to study fast pyrolysis of three microalgae species in a continuous bench-scale conical spouted bed reactor at 500 °C. Bio-gas, bio-oil and bio-char yields have been determined and characterized by using GC, GC/MS, elemental analyzer and SEM. Bio-oil was the main product obtained through pyrolysis of microalgae. The non-condensable gaseous stream is made up of mainly hydrogen, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, apart from other light hydrocarbons detected in lower concentration, as are methane, ethane, ethylene, propane and propylene. The compounds identified in the bio-oil have been categorized into hydrocarbons, nitrogen containing compounds, ketones, alcohols, acids, lactones, phenols and aldehydes. The nitrogen and carbon contents of the microalgae bio-chars are higher than those for bio-chars derived from other biomasses. Pyrolysis improved the morphology and porous structure of microalgae. Finally, the mechanism involving microalgae pyrolysis has been approached and the main reaction pathways have been proposed.

Abstract:In recent years, there has been an explosive growth and overabundance of pelagic Sargassum macroalgae in the North Atlantic Ocean, which wash up on the beaches in the United States, Mexico and the Caribbeans, causing both environmental and health issues in those coastal regions. Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) process was investigated as a potential solution by converting this wet algae biomass into solid and liquid products, namely hydrochar and organic process water, respectively. In this study, the effects of HTC reaction temperatures on the yields and physicochemical properties of hydrochar and organic process water derived from Sargassum algae sample obtained from a coastal region in South Florida were evaluated by using various analytical techniques, including SEM, TGA, BET, FTIR and GC-MS. As a result of the increase in temperature, hydrochar yield decreased, while the yield of bio-oil increased. During the heating process, the volatile matter in hydrochar decreases, whereas the fixed carbon increases. Ash content in hydrochar increases as temperature increases. There were some interconnected pores on the surfaces of all three temperatures. It has been shown that a change in temperature has a significant effect on the chemical composition of bio-oils. In some cases, certain compounds increased as the temperature increased, but in others, it was temperature dependent. This study demonstrated that HTC technology could be a potential solution for mitigating Sargassum pollution issue by converting it into value-added bio-based products.

Abstract:Algal biomass including macroalgae and microalgae show great potential as pyrolysis feedstock in generating energy-dense and valuable pyrolytic products such as bio-oil, biochar and bio-syngas. The chemical constituents of macroalgae and microalgae show great variations, especially their lipid, carbohydrate and protein contents, which could affect the qualities of the pyrolytic products. From the established conventional pyrolysis, the products produced from both macroalgae and microalgae show moderate energy contents (<34 MJ/kg). The review identifies the issues associated with development of conventional pyrolysis such as flash and intermediate pyrolysis. To enhance the production of biofuels from algal biomass, advanced or non-conventional pyrolysis techniques have been employed. Catalytic pyrolysis on algal biomass could reduce the nitrogenates and oxygenates in the biofuels. On top of that, co-pyrolysis with suitable feedstock shows great enhancement on the bio-oil yield. As for hydropyrolysis of algal biomass, their generated biofuels can produce up to 48 MJ/kg with high yield of bio-oil up to 50 wt%, comparable to conventional fuels. Microwave-assisted pyrolysis of algal biomass greatly shortens the processing time through advanced heating; however, favours the formation of bio-syngas by improving the yield up to 84 wt% depending on the feedstock used. Therefore, formation of biofuel fraction suitable for energy generation highly depends on the selected pyrolysis technologies.

Abstract:This study investigated the pyrolysis of microalgal-bacterial granular sludge for producing bio-oil and biochar. Results showed that the bio-oil productivity of pyrolyzed MBGS reached 39.5-45.4 wt%, while 23.8-41.2% for the nitrogen-containing bio-oil at the temperature of 673-1073 K. Meanwhile the biochar with a nitrogen content of 3.7-7.0 wt% could also be produced. Moreover, the Van-Krevelen diagram revealed that produced bio-oil had a H/C ratio higher than that from agroforestry biomass, but its O/C ratio was found to be similar to those of coal and biochar. It further appeared from a mass conservation analysis that the highest bio-oil production yield was achieved at a pyrolysis temperature of 773 K, while the pyrolytic kinetics of MBGS in the temperature range studied was governed by the 3-D diffusion mechanism with the activation energy of 224.96 kJ·mol<sup>-1</sup>.

Abstract:Microalgae Spirulina has good potential for bio-oil production. Therefore, kinetic and thermodynamic analysis of its pyrolysis process was performed. The activation energy values were estimated using both differential (109-340 kJ/mol) and integral (102-272 kJ/mol) isoconversional methods. Kinetic model was determined using master plot approach and the pyrolysis reaction appeared to transition between nucleation, diffusion and order-based kinetic models. Based on sigmoidal equations, a novel kinetic model equation was proposed which can define the pyrolysis process of algal biomass showing single differential thermogravimetric peak. The proposed kinetic triplet predicted the weight loss evolution quite precisely. Additionally, the thermodynamic feasibility of the reaction was examined based on enthalpy, entropy and Gibbs free energy. It was revealed that heat is consumed to make the raw sample reach a 'more orderly' state until a fractional conversion of 0.35. Moreover, bio-char and the remaining lipids at high temperature impede the reaction spontaneity towards the end.
Fast Pyrolysis of Microalgae to Produce Renewable Fuels

Abstract:In the present study, fast pyrolysis tests of microalgae were performed in the fluid bed reactor. The experiments were completed at temperature of 500°C with a heating rate of 600°Cs−1 and a sweep gas (N2) flow rate of 0.4m3h−1 and a vapour residence time of 2–3s. In comparison with the previous studies on slow pyrolysis from microalgae in an autoclave, a greater amount of high quality bio-oil can be directly produced from continuously processing microalgae feeds at a rate of 4gmin−1 in the present work, which has a potential for commercial application of large-scale production of liquid fuels. The liquid product yields of 18 and 24% from fast pyrolysis of Chllorella protothecoides and Microcystis aeruginosa were obtained. The saturated and polar fractions account for 1.14 and 31.17% of the bio-oils of microalgae on average, which are higher than those of bio-oil from wood. The H/C and O/C molar ratios of microalgae bio-oil are 1.7 and 0.3, respectively. The gas chromatograph analyses showed that the distribution of straight-chain alkanes of the saturated fractions from microalgae bio-oils were similar to diesel fuel. Bio-oil product from fast pyrolysis microalgae is characterized by low oxygen content with a higher heating value of 29MJ/kg, a density of 1.16kgl−1 and a viscosity of 0.10Pas. These properties of bio-oil of microalgae make it more suitable for fuel oil use than fast pyrolysis oils from lignocellulosic materials.

Abstract:Background: Bioenergy attracts much attention due to the global demand for renewable and sustainable energy resources. Waste biomass feedstocks—date pits, coffee waste, and cow dung—require efficient and environmentally friendly waste-management technologies such as pyrolysis. Fast pyrolysis occurs at fast heating rates (10–100 °C/s), generates high bio-oil yields, and is the most widely used process for biofuel generation. The aim of the study is to compare the effect of pyrolysis between single, binary, and ternary feeds on thermal degradation behavior and bio-oil composition. Methods: Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was conducted at 30 °C/min from room temperature to 850 °C to understand the thermal degradation behavior of the biomasses. A Pyroprobe® reactor—a micro-scale pyrolyzer—was used to conduct the fast pyrolysis at 500 °C with a heating rate of 10 °C/s, and the volatile contents were quantified using a gas chromatograph–mass spectrometer (GC/MS). Results: The (TGA) showed three main stages of decomposition following dehydration, devolatilization, and char degradation for the different single and multiple feeds. According to the identified compounds, the bio-oil components are broadly identified as aldehydes, amines, aliphatic, aromatics, alcohols, furans, ketones, and acids. The three single-biomass pyrolysis products have four compounds in common, acetic acid and ketone groups (acetic acid, 2-propanone, 1-hydroxy-, benzyl methyl ketone, and 1,2-cyclopentanedione). Conclusion: The bio-oil generated from the feeds comprises great potential for volatiles, diesel, and gasoline production with carbon atoms ranging from C2–C33. Future studies should focus on understanding the effect of procedural parameters, including blending ratio, temperature, and heating rates, on bio-oil composition. Additional molecular techniques should be employed to understand biomass components' reaction mechanisms to produce useful bio-oil products.

Abstract:The major challenges for the current climate change issue are an increase in global energy demand, a limited supply of fossil fuels, and increasing carbon footprints from fossil fuels, which have necessitated the exploration of sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels. Biorefineries offer a promising path to sustainable fuel production, converting biomass into biofuels using diverse technologies. Aquatic biomass, such as macroalgae in this context, represents an abundant and renewable biomass resource that can be cultivated from water bodies without competing with traditional agricultural land. Despite this, the potential of macroalgae for biofuel production remains largely untapped, with very limited studies addressing their viability and efficiency. This study investigates the efficient conversion of unexplored macroalgae biomass through a biorefinery process that involves lipid extraction to produce biodiesel, along with the production of biochar and bio-oil from the pyrolysis of residual biomass. To improve the effectiveness and overall performance of the pyrolysis system, Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was utilized through a Box-Behnken design to systematically investigate how alterations in temperature, reaction time, and catalyst concentration influence the production of bio-oil and biochar to maximize their yields. The results showed the highest bio-oil yield achieved to be 36 %, while the highest biochar yield reached 45 %. The integration of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in the study helps to assess carbon emission and environmental burdens and identify potential areas for optimization, such as resource efficiency, waste management, and energy utilization. The LCA results contribute to the identification of potential environmental hotspots and guide the development of strategies to optimize the overall sustainability of the biofuel production process. The LCA results indicate that the solvent (chloroform) used in transesterification contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions and climate change impacts. Therefore, it is crucial to explore alternative, safe solvents that can mitigate the environmental impacts of transesterification.

Abstract:Herein we report the fast pyrolysis of dried, ground Scenedesmus sp. at two different reactor scales. Pyrolysis was performed at 480 °C and 1 bar in both an isothermal spouted bed reactor and a dynamic pyrolysis-GC/MS unit, each with 2 s vapor residence times. Bio-oil products were characterized on the basis of GC-MS, simulated distillation GC, elemental analysis, calorific content and total acid number. The ratio of crude oil: char obtained from the spouted bed reactor was 3.76 by weight, the average calorific content of the oil being 18.4 MJ/kg. The average total acid number (68 mg KOH/g) was lower than typical bio-oil produced via wood pyrolysis. Simulated distillation results indicated that a significant proportion of the oil corresponded to the boiling range typical for heavy gas oil (343 °C–524 °C). Elemental analysis showed the oil contained an average of 27.6 wt.% oxygen and 8.6 wt.% nitrogen, the relatively high nitrogen content being a consequence of the high protein content of the algae. According to GC-MS data, the oil consisted of various hydrocarbons as well as oxygenated and nitrogenous species, including indoles, fatty acids and amides. Pyrolysis-GC-MS was also performed on Scenedesmus sp. in order to provide insights into the nature of the primary pyrolysis products.

Abstract:Wastes from oil palm plantations and mill processing are renewable resources for bio-energy and biochemicals development. The five most abundant oil palm wastes are empty fruit bunch (EFB), palm kernel shell (PKS), palm mesocarp fiber (PMF), palm frond (PF), and palm trunk (PT). These different types of biomass have different properties which can significantly influence the bio-oil products and pyrolysis performance. Bio-oil and biochar were produced by slow pyrolysis of these wastes in a fixed-bed reactor at 600 °C for 60 min. The biomass and pyrolysis products were comparatively characterized using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The highest yield (25.5 wt%) of bio-oil was obtained from PF, while the highest yield (29.7 wt%) of biochar was obtained from PMF. Fatty acids were the main compounds in bio-oil obtained from EFB and PMF, while those from PKS, PF, and PT contained more aromatics and their boiling point distributions were lower than EFB and PMF bio-oils. Biochar from all the materials decomposed in two stages and showed similar compositions. The variations in the yields and properties of products resulted from differences in the properties of feedstocks. The results could contribute useful data for selection and controlling the pyrolysis of oil palm wastes.

Abstract:Climate change issues are calling for advanced methods to produce materials and fuels in a carbon–neutral and circular way. For instance, biomass pyrolysis has been intensely investigated during the last years. Here we review the pyrolysis of algal and lignocellulosic biomass with focus on pyrolysis products and mechanisms, oil upgrading, combining pyrolysis and anaerobic digestion, economy, and life cycle assessment. Products include oil, gas, and biochar. Upgrading techniques comprise hot vapor filtration, solvent addition, emulsification, esterification and transesterification, hydrotreatment, steam reforming, and the use of supercritical fluids. We examined the economic viability in terms of profitability, internal rate of return, return on investment, carbon removal service, product pricing, and net present value. We also reviewed 20 recent studies of life cycle assessment. We found that the pyrolysis method highly influenced product yield, ranging from 9.07 to 40.59% for oil, from 10.1 to 41.25% for biochar, and from 11.93 to 28.16% for syngas. Feedstock type, pyrolytic temperature, heating rate, and reaction retention time were the main factors controlling the distribution of pyrolysis products. Pyrolysis mechanisms include bond breaking, cracking, polymerization and re-polymerization, and fragmentation. Biochar from residual forestry could sequester 2.74 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per ton biochar when applied to the soil and has thus the potential to remove 0.2–2.75 gigatons of atmospheric carbon dioxide annually. The generation of biochar and bio-oil from the pyrolysis process is estimated to be economically feasible.

Abstract:An oleaginous yeast Rhodotorula paludigena CM33 was pyrolyzed for the first time to produce bio-oil and biochar applying a bench-scale reactor. The strain possessed a high lipid content with the main fatty acids similar to vegetable oils. Prior to pyrolysis, the yeast was dehydrated using a spray dryer. Pyrolysis temperatures in the range of 400-600 °C were explored in order to obtain the optimal condition for bio-oil and biochar production. The result showed that a maximum bio-oil yield of 60% was achieved at 550 °C. Simulated distillation gas chromatography showed that the bio-oil contained 2.6% heavy naphtha, 20.7% kerosene, 24.3% biodiesel, and 52.4% fuel oil. Moreover, a short path distillation technique was attempted in order to further purify the bio-oil. The biochar was also characterized for its properties. The consequence of this work could pave a way for the sustainable production of solid and liquid biofuel products from the oleaginous yeast.

Abstract:Abstract: In the last decade, biomass pyrolysis has received more attention in the renewable energy sector. This technology converts biomass to obtain valuable products: bio-oil, biochar, and gas. Bio-oil is a liquid product from pyrolysis that can be used to fuel boilers and furnaces, or further processed to produce fuel oil and chemical products. In this study, bio-oil was generated from slow pyrolysis of oil palm empty fruit bunches (OPEFB) at various temperatures. The objective of this research is to investigate the effect of temperature on the properties of products generated from the pyrolysis of OPEFB. Six different pyrolysis temperatures ranging from 300 to 700°C were used to produce bio-oil. It was found that operating temperature affected the product yield and its properties significantly. The higher the operating temperature of slow pyrolysis, the amount of bio-oil produced was also increased with a decrease in biochar yield. The highest yield of bio-oil was found to be 55.53% at a pyrolysis temperature of 700°C with a yield of biochar and syngas was 24.22% and 20.25%, respectively. The GC-MS analysis was used as a quantitative means to characterize the liquid pyrolysis product. The findings of GC-MS showed that bio-oil generated in this study was dominated by phenols and ketones. In conclusion, pyrolysis of OPEFB demonstrates significant potential for industrial applications to generate valuable products especially bio-oil, providing a renewable alternative to fossil fuels.Abstrak: Dalam satu dekade terakhir, pirolisis biomassa semakin mendapat perhatian di sektor energi terbarukan. Teknologi ini mengubah biomassa menjadi produk-produk yang bernilai seperti: bio-oil, biochar, dan gas. Bio-oil adalah produk cair dari pirolisis yang dapat digunakan sebagai bahan bakar boiler dan furnace, atau diproses lebih lanjut untuk menghasilkan bahan bakar minyak dan produk kimia. Dalam penelitian ini, bio-oil dihasilkan dari proses pirolisis lambat tandan kosong kelapa sawit (TKKS) pada berbagai kondisi suhu. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh suhu terhadap karakteristik produk yang dihasilkan dari pirolisis TKKS. Berbagai variasi suhu pirolisis dari rentang 300 hingga 700°C digunakan untuk menghasilkan bio-oil. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa suhu pirolisis mempengaruhi yield produk dan karakteristiknya secara signifikan. Semakin tinggi suhu operasi pirolisis, jumlah bio-oil yang dihasilkan juga semakin meningkat, namun diikuti dengan penurunan yield biochar. Yield tertinggi bio-oil yaitu sebesar 55,53% diperoleh pada suhu 700°C diikuti dengan yield biochar dan syngas masing-masing sebesar 24,22% and 20,25%. Analisis GC-MS digunakan sebagai metode kuantitatif untuk mengkarakterisasi produk cair dari pirolisis. Hasil GC-MS menunjukkan bahwa komposisi bio-oil yang dihasilkan dalam penelitian ini didominasi oleh senyawa fenol dan keton. Penelitian ini menjanjikan potensi dari pirolisis TKKS untuk aplikasi industri guna menghasilkan produk bernilai tinggi berupa bio-oil sebagai penyedia sumber energi terbarukan pengganti bahan bakar fosil.

Abstract:The use of renewable energy sources is becoming increasingly necessary to mitigate global warming. Recently much research has been focused on identifying suitable biomass species, which can provide high-energy outputs, to replace conventional fossil fuels. This paper reports an approach for increasing the yield of bio-oil production from fast pyrolysis after manipulating the metabolic pathway in microalgae through heterotrophic growth. The yield of bio-oil (57.9%) produced from heterotrophic Chlorella protothecoides cells was 3.4 times higher than from autotrophic cells by fast pyrolysis. The bio-oil was characterized by a much lower oxygen content, with a higher heating value (41MJkg−1), a lower density (0.92kgl−1), and lower viscosity (0.02Pas) compared to those of bio-oil from autotrophic cells and wood. These properties are comparable to fossil oil. The research could contribute to the creation of a system to produce energy from microalgae, and also could have great commercial potential for liquid fuel production.
