Abstract:The control of the emission properties of synthetic organic molecules through molecular design has led to the development of high-performance optoelectronic devices with tunable emission colours, high quantum efficiencies and efficient energy/charge transfer processes. However, the task of generating excited states with long lifetimes has been met with limited success, owing to the ultrafast deactivation of the highly active excited states. Here, we present a design rule that can be used to tune the emission lifetime of a wide range of luminescent organic molecules, based on effective stabilization of triplet excited states through strong coupling in H-aggregated molecules. Our experimental data revealed that luminescence lifetimes up to 1.35 s, which are several orders of magnitude longer than those of conventional organic fluorophores, can be realized under ambient conditions. These results outline a fundamental principle to design organic molecules with extended lifetimes of excited states, providing a major step forward in expanding the scope of organic phosphorescence applications.
Exciton- and Polaron-Induced Reversible Dipole Reorientation in Amorphous Organic Semiconductor Films

Abstract:The quantum efficiency of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) employing thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) highly depends on the S-1-T-1 energy gaps (Delta E-ST) of the emitters. However, the Delta E-ST values determined in solution or even in organic thin films through a static approach continuously fail in predicting device performance. Herein, by systematically investigating the time-resolved emission spectra of several TADF emitters in various matrixes and the dielectric spectra of the matrixes, it is demonstrated that molecular organic semiconductors can undergo reversible and irreversible spatial rearrangements within a few dozen nanoseconds in an electric field created by a polarized charge-transfer state and can in turn lower the excited-state energy. In contrast to solution solvation, the polarized microenvironment in films can last for tens of microseconds or more after removing the electric field, leading to a narrowing and a broader distribution of Delta E-ST. In TADF OLEDs, the large dipole moment of emitter-based polarons is key for reducing the Delta E-ST of subsequently generated excitons by inducing the dipole orientation of the surrounding molecules. Understanding the so-called solid-state solvation with a dynamic approach can provide deeper insight into the working mechanism in organic semiconductor devices.

Abstract:Efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) has been characterized for a carbazole/sulfone derivative in both solutions and doped films. A pure blue organic light emitting diode (OLED) based on this compound demonstrates a very high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of nearly 10% at low current density. Because TADF only occurs in a bipolar system where donor and acceptor centered (3)ππ* states are close to or higher than the triplet intramolecular charge transfer ((3)CT) state, control of the π-conjugation length of both donor and acceptor is considered to be as important as breaking the π-conjugation between them in blue TADF material design.

Abstract:Singlet-singlet exciton annihilation (SSA) is found to be a critical factor for the decomposition of blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Since radiative decay is a competitive process against bimolecular SSA, increasing the fluorescence rate (k(F)) of the blue TADF emitters can significantly prolong the device's operational lifetime by reducing the singlet exciton concentration at a given luminance level.

Abstract:Metal-free, thermally activated delayed fluorescent (TADF) emitters have emerged as a promising new generation of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) materials. Donor-acceptor (D-A) structures are widely used in TADF molecular design to ensure a small energy splitting between the singlet and triplet excitons. Here, a series of efficient bluish-green TADF emitters are constructed using one or two phenyltriazine acceptors and one tercarbazole, bicarbazole or indolo[2,3-b]carbazole donor through anortho-linkage. The impact of the D/A ratio on the photoluminescence and electroluminescence stability of these emitters in doped films is thoroughly investigated. According to the two-exciton dynamics and the degradation products, device degradation is deduced to be a result of electrophilic substitution between two charge-transfer excitons. Within a limited molecular weight range, increasing the number of acceptor moieties leads to a decrease in the hole delocalization range in the excited state, which facilitates the substitution reaction. Based on an optimized device structure, the device containing an emitter with bulk a tercarbazole donor achieves a long half-life of 1512 hours with an initial luminescence of 1000 cd m(-2). Our findings reveal a possible mechanism for exciton-exciton and exciton-polaron annihilation-induced device degradation and provide new approaches for achieving stable OLEDs employing TADF.

Abstract:Organic afterglow is a fascinating phenomenon with exceptional applications. However, it encounters challenges such as low intensity and efficiency, and typically requires UV-light excitation and facile intersystem crossing (ISC) due to its spin-forbidden nature. Here, we develop a novel strategy that bypasses the conventional ISC pathway by promoting singlet-triplet transition through the synergistic effects of the intra/intermolecular heavy-atom effect in aromatic crystals, enabling the direct population of triplet excited states from the ground state. The resulting materials exhibit a bright organic afterglow with a remarkably enhanced quantum efficiency of up to 5.81%, and a significantly increased organic afterglow lifetime of up to 157 microseconds under visible light. Moreover, given the high-efficiency visible-light excitable organic afterglow emission, the potential application is demonstrated in lifetime-resolved, color-encoded, and excitation wavelength-dependent pattern encryption. This work demonstrates the importance of the direct population method in enhancing the organic afterglow performance and red-shifting the excitation wavelength, and provides crucial insights for advancing organic optoelectronic technologies that involve triplet states.

Improving the Stability of Green Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence OLEDs by Reducing the Excited-State Dipole Moment

Abstract:Highly efficient organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) employing metal-free thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters have attracted much attention in recent years. Efficient TADF mainly occurs in charge-transfer (CT) molecules. Here, we demonstrate that a small dipole moment for TADF emitters in the S-1 state is key for device stability by comparing two green TADF emitters with the same moieties but different types of linker. The compound 1AC-TRZ with a 9,9-dimethyl-9,10-dihydroacridine donor and a triphenyltriazine acceptor attached at the 1- and N-positions of carbazole has a smaller excited-state dipole moment (11 D) than the 3- and N-substituted analog 3AC-TRZ (30 D). Although the emission spectra and efficiencies of their devices are similar, the operational lifetime of the 1AC-TRZ-based device is much longer than that of the 3AC-TRZ-based device. Time-resolved emission spectra indicate that the S-1 energy of 3AC-TRZ in doped films is higher than that of 1AC-TRZ at the start of nanosecond solvation experiment suggests that the short-term existence (<1 ns) of high energy (>2.9 eV) excitons induced degradation in films. Our study reveals a relationship between solid-state solvation and new guideline for designing stable green and blue TADF emitters.

Abstract:The utilization of triplet excitons is greatly concerned in organic luminophores. For thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters, the reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) which activates the triplet excitons at low temperature remains challenging without thermal stimulation. Herein, a temperature-dependent promotion relay of the triplet excitons from TADF to self-sensitized triplet − triplet annihilation up-conversion (TTA-UC) was demonstrated in an asymmetrical TADF luminophore based on 9,9-dimethyl-9,10-dihydroacridine (DMAC) donor and diphenylfonyl (DPS) acceptor. Single-crystal structure analysis combined with theoretical calculations revealed that the alternate strong-and-weak contact of the molecules reduced the singlet–triplet splitting energy (Δ E ST ), amplified the singlet–triplet coupling (SOC) strength and exciton coupling (EC), leading to highly efficient RISC process over a wide range of temperatures. Moreover, benefiting from the extreme small Δ E ST value and large SOC strength, highly efficient blue OLEDs were achieved with the highest CE max , PE max and EQE max of 32.0 cd A -1 , 33.5 lm W −1 and 14.7%, and low efficiency roll-off. This work provides a design guidance for high utilization of the triplet excitons through RISC to improve the luminescence efficiency and reduce the device efficiency roll-off.

Abstract:Abstract Fast spin-flipping is the key to exploit the triplet excitons in thermally activated delayed fluorescence based organic light-emitting diodes toward high efficiency, low efficiency roll-off and long operating lifetime. In common donor-acceptor type thermally activated delayed fluorescence molecules, the distribution of dihedral angles in the film state would have significant influence on the photo-physical properties, which are usually neglected by researches. Herein, we find that the excited state lifetimes of thermally activated delayed fluorescence emitters are subjected to conformation distributions in the host-guest system. Acridine-type flexible donors have a broad conformation distribution or bimodal distribution, in which some conformers feature large singlet-triplet energy gap, leading to long excited state lifetime. Utilization of rigid donors with steric hindrance can restrict the conformation distributions in the film to achieve degenerate singlet and triplet states, which is beneficial to efficient reverse intersystem crossing. Based on this principle, three prototype thermally activated delayed fluorescence emitters with confined conformation distributions are developed, achieving high reverse intersystem crossing rate constants greater than 10 6 s −1 , which enable highly efficient solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes with suppressed efficiency roll-off.

Abstract:Developing high-efficient afterglow from metal-free organic molecules remains a formidable challenge due to the intrinsically spin-forbidden phosphorescence emission nature of organic afterglow, and only a few examples exhibit afterglow efficiency over 10%. Here, we demonstrate that the organic afterglow can be enhanced dramatically by thermally activated processes to release the excitons on the stabilized triplet state (T 1 * ) to the lowest triplet state (T 1 ) and to the singlet excited state (S 1 ) for spin-allowed emission. Designed in a twisted donor–acceptor architecture with small singlet-triplet splitting energy and shallow exciton trapping depth, the thermally activated organic afterglow shows an efficiency up to 45%. This afterglow is an extraordinary tri-mode emission at room temperature from the radiative decays of S 1 , T 1 , and T 1 * . With the highest afterglow efficiency reported so far, the tri-mode afterglow represents an important concept advance in designing high-efficient organic afterglow materials through facilitating thermally activated release of stabilized triplet excitons.

Abstract:Organic luminescent materials are promising for next-generation flexible opto-electronics. Nonetheless, the luminescent e?ciency in organic molecules is limited by a barrier between the singlet and triplet excited states. In this mini review, we focus on the strategies to overcome such limit by manipulating the dynamics of triplet excited states. By designing the electronic coupling between singlet and triplet excited states, the processes of hot intersys-tem crossing, reversal intersystem crossing and triplet state stabilization at different stages are successfully implemented to promote the light emission in the organic luminescent materials. The understanding of the mechanisms drives the development of thermally-activated delayed fluorescence and organic long-persistent luminescence, which are promising for the applications of organic light-emitting diodes, sensors and bioimaging.

Abstract:Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules enabling long lifetime triplet excitons are potential candidates for long‐lived afterglow emission. The review summarizes the recent progress in TADF‐based organic afterglow materials and gives an overview of the photophysical mechanism, design strategies, and the performances for relevant applications. Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF)‐based materials are attracting widespread attention for different applications owing to their ability of harvesting both singlet and triplet excitons without noble metals in their structures. As compared to the conventional fluorescence and room‐temperature phosphorescence pathways, TADF originates from the reverse intersystem crossing process from the excited triplet state (T1) to the singlet state (S1). Therefore, TADF emitters enabling activated and long lifetime T1 excitons are potential candidates for generating long‐lived afterglow emission, an effect that can still be observed for a while by the naked eye after the removal of the excitation light source. Recently, TADF‐based organic afterglow materials featuring high photoluminescence quantum yields and long lifetimes above 100 ms under ambient conditions, have emerged for advanced information security, high‐contrast biological imaging, optoelectronic devices, and intelligent sensors, whereas the related systematic review is still lacking. Herein, the recent progress in TADF‐based organic afterglow materials is summarized and an overview of the photophysical mechanism, design strategies, and the performances for relevant applications is given. In addition, the challenge and perspective of this area are given at the end of the review.

Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence (TADF) Path toward Efficient Electroluminescence in Purely Organic Materials: Molecular Level Insight

Abstract:Since the seminal work of Tang and Vanslyke in 1987 on small-molecule emitters and that of Friend and co-workers in 1990 on conjugated-polymer emitters, organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have attracted much attention from academia as well as industry, as the OLED market is estimated to reach the $30 billion mark by the end of 2018. In these first-generation organic emitters, on the basis of simple spin statistics, electrical excitation resulted in the formation of ∼25% singlet excitons and ∼75% triplet excitons. Radiative decay of the singlet excitons to the singlet ground state leads to a prompt fluorescence emission, while the triplet excitons only lead to weak phosphorescence due to the very small spin-orbit couplings present in purely organic molecules. The consequence is a ca. 75% energy loss, which triggered wide-ranging efforts to try and harvest as many of the triplet excitons as possible. In 1998, Thompson, Forrest, and their co-workers reported second-generation OLED emitters based on coordination complexes with heavy transition metals (e.g., iridium or platinum). Here, the triplet excitons stimulate efficient and fast phosphorescence due to the strong spin-orbit couplings enabled by the heavy-metal atoms. Internal quantum efficiencies (IQE) up to 100% have been reported, which means that for every electron injected into the device, a photon is emitted. While these second-generation emitters are those mainly exploited in current OLED applications, there is strong impetus from both cost and environmental standpoints to find new ways of exploiting purely organic emitters, which in addition can offer greater flexibility to fine-tune the electronic and optical properties by exploiting the synthetic organic chemistry toolbox. In 2012, Adachi and co-workers introduced a promising strategy, based on thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), to harvest the triplet excitons in purely organic molecular materials. These materials now represent the third generation of OLED emitters. Impressive photophysical properties and device performances have been reported, with internal quantum efficiencies also reaching nearly 100%. Our objectives in this Account are threefold: (i) to lay out a comprehensive description, at the molecular level, of the fundamental photophysical processes behind TADF emitters; (ii) to discuss some of the challenges facing the design of TADF emitters, such as the need to balance the efficiency of thermal activation of triplet excitons into the singlet manifold with the efficiency of radiative transition to the ground state; and (iii) to highlight briefly some of the recent molecular-design strategies that pave the way to new classes of TADF materials.
Room temperature triplet state spectroscopy of organic semiconductors

Abstract:Organic light emitting devices and solar cells are machines that create, manipulate and destroy excited states in organic semiconductors. It is crucial to characterize these excited states, or excitons, to optimize device performance in applications like displays and solar energy harvesting. This is complicated if the excited state is a triplet because the electronic transition is dark with a vanishing oscillator strength. As a consequence, triplet state spectroscopy must usually be performed at cryogenic temperatures to reduce competition from non-radiative rates. Here, we control non-radiative rates by engineering a solid-state host matrix containing the target molecule, allowing the observation of phosphorescence at room temperature and alleviating constraints of cryogenic experiments. We test these techniques on a wide range of materials with functionalities spanning multi-exciton generation (singlet exciton fission), organic light emitting device host materials, and thermally activated delayed fluorescence type emitters. Control of non-radiative modes in the matrix surrounding a target molecule may also have broader applications in light emitting and photovoltaic devices.

Long-Lived Spin-Polarized Intermolecular Exciplex States in Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence-Based Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

Abstract:Spin-spin interactions in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) are pivotal because radiative recombination is largely determined by triplet-to-singlet conversion, also called reverse intersystem crossing (RISC). To explore the underlying process, we apply a spin-resonance spectral hole-burning technique to probe electroluminescence. We find that the triplet exciplex states in OLEDs are highly spin-polarized and show that these states can be decoupled from the heterogeneous nuclear environment as a source of spin dephasing and can even be coherently manipulated on a spin-spin relaxation time scale T2* of 30 ns. Crucially, we obtain the characteristic triplet exciplex spin-lattice relaxation time T1 in the range of 50 us, which far exceeds the RISC time. We conclude that slow spin relaxation rather than RISC is an efficiency-limiting step for intermolecular donor:acceptor systems. Finding TADF emitters with faster spin relaxation will benefit this type of TADF OLEDs.

Abstract:A barely reached balance between weak intramolecular-charge-transfer (ICT) and small singlet-triplet splitting energy (Delta E-ST) for reverse intersystem crossing from non-emissive triplet state to radiative singlet state impedes the realization of deep-blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials. By discarding the twisted-ICT framework for a flattened molecular backbone and introducing a strong acceptor possessing n-pi* transition character, hypsochromic color, a large radiative rate (k(F)), and small Delta E-ST are achieved simultaneously. Six molecules with a 9,9-dimethyl-10-phenyl-9,10-dihydroacridine (i-DMAc) donor are synthesized and investigated. Coinciding with time-dependent density functional theory, the reduced dihedral angles between donor (D) and acceptor (A) weaken ICT from dispersed charge density and enable a large k(F) from increased frontier molecular orbitals overlap. Despite the separated highest occupied (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) population, the intercalation of phenyl bridges between D-A increases k(F) but significantly lowers the local triplet excited state, indicating small HOMO and LUMO overlap is not a sufficient, but necessary condition for reduced Delta E-ST. Integrating short conjugation length and carbonyl or triazine acceptors into the complanation molecules, deep-blue TADF organic light-emitting diodes demonstrate maximum external quantum efficiencies of 11.5% and 10.9% with Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage coordinates of (0.16, 0.09) and (0.15, 0.11), respectively, which is quite close to the stringent National Television System Committee blue standard.
Nature of the Lowest Singlet and Triplet Excited States of Organic Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Emitters: A Self-Consistent Quantum Mechanics/Embedded Charge Study

Abstract:Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) is dictated by the properties of the lowest singlet (S-1) and triplet (T-1) excited states. Both small energy difference (Delta E-ST) and large spin-orbit coupling (SOC) between S-1 and T-1 are desired to increase the rate for reverse intersystem crossing (RISC). In this work, we investigated the ground- and excited-state electronic properties of three representative D-(pi)-A type TADF molecules in solid phase by means of a self-consistent quantum-mechanics/embedded-charge (QM/EC) approach, which consists of a series of iterative QM/EC single-point computations to account for the solid-state polarization effect. The results show that, unless the D and A units are perpendicular to each other, both the S-1 and T-1 states are characteristic of mixed charge transfer (CT) and local excitation (LE). Thereby, the LEST values are relatively large in gas phase. Importantly, the CT contribution is relatively larger in the S-1 state than in the T-1 state; thus, the S-1 energy is more stabilized by electronic polarization, leading to smaller REST in solid phase. At the same time, the SOC can be considerable due to the difference in the nature of the S-1 and T-1 states. These results shed light on the origin of fast RISC in efficient organic TADF systems.
Dynamic Transition Between Monomer and Excimer Phosphorescence in Organic Near-Infrared Phosphorescent Crystals

Abstract:Achieving efficient near-infrared room-temperature phosphorescence of purely organic phosphors remains scarce and challenging due to strong nonradiative decay. Additionally, the investigation of triplet excimer phosphorescence is rarely reported, despite the fact that excimer, a special emitter commonly formed in crystals with strong pi-pi interactions, can efficiently change the fluorescent properties of compounds. Herein, a series of dithienopyrrole derivatives with low triplet energy levels and stable triplet states, exhibiting persistent near-infrared room-temperature phosphorescence, is developed. Via the modification of halogen atoms, the crystals display tunable emissions of monomers from 645 to 702 nm, with a maximum lifetime of 3.68 ms under ambient conditions. Notably, excimer phosphorescence can be switched on at low temperatures, enabled by noncovalent interactions rigidifying the matrix and stabilizing triplet excimer. Unprecedentedly, the dynamic transition process is captured between the monomer and excimer phosphorescence with temperature variations, revealing that the unstable triplet excimers in crystals with a tendency to dissociate can result in the effective quench of room-temperature phosphorescence. Excited state transitions across varying environments are elucidated, interpreting the structural dynamics of the triplet excimer and demonstrating strategies for devising novel near-infrared phosphors. The novel phosphors are developed by the modification of dithienopyrrole, exhibiting efficient and persistent near-infrared room temperature phosphorescence. At low temperatures, excimer phosphorescence can be activated, enabled by the enhanced noncovalent interactions. With environmental variations, the dynamic transition process between the monomer and excimer phosphorescence is captured, establishing a framework to understand the photophysical mechanisms governing organic phosphorescence.image

Abstract:Organic afterglow materials have emerged as an important class of luminescent materials. These afterglow systems feature small rate constants of key photophysical processes, such as phosphorescence decay and nonradiative decay of triplet excited states. When coupled to other photophysical processes, these afterglow systems would give rise to intriguing photophysical behaviors. Here we report the transformation of afterglow mechanism from room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) to thermally-activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) in intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) systems. Detailed studies reveal that the increase of the acceptor strength of ICT molecules can reduce singlet-triplet splitting energy and consequently open reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) pathway with moderate k RISC of 1–10 s −1 to harvest triplet energies, leading to the RTP-to-TADF afterglow transformation. Such observations provide deep understanding on the behaviors of organic triplets with small photophysical rate constants. Besides, these organic ICT molecules have been incorporated into aqueous emulsion systems to exhibit promising applications.
