Abstract:The recovery of valuable compounds from waste supports the idea of a circular economy. Two systems were introduced in this study to recover nitrogen as struvite from swine wastewater, including batch stirred and fluidized-bed homogeneous crystallization (FBHC) systems. MgCl 2 and NaH 2 PO 4 were applied as precipitants to form struvite. In the batch stirred system, the removal efficiency of NH 4 + , Mg 2+ , and PO 4 3− reached the optimum condition of 92.1 %, 75.6 %, and 91.1 %, respectively, under the operating conditions of pH 9 and an Mg/P molar ratio of 1.2. In the same operating conditions, the Crystallization ratio (CR) and Total Removal (TR) of the FBHC system reached 83.2 % and 89.1 %; 86.7 % and 90.6 %; 71.2 % and 76.1 % for NH 4 + , Mg 2+ , and PO 4 3− , respectively. The XRD and FT-IR analyses confirmed the high purity and quality of the struvite solid product. However, the water content of the FBHC product is much lower than that of the batch-stirred system (5.8 % and 95.3 %, respectively). The great potential of swine wastewater as a nitrogen source for fertilizer production is evidenced by the high purity struvite product (>85.0 %).

Abstract:Phosphorus is the crucial factor causing eutrophication in the aquatic ecology. The high phosphorus loading in water bodies may result from the direct disposal of untreated wastewater. In this study, a fluidized bed reactor (FBR) was specially developed to remove and recover phosphorus effectively and efficiently via struvite crystallization. Different physiochemical and hydraulic conditions, including hydraulic retention time (HRT), pH, and molar ratios of Mg : P, N : P and Ca : Mg, were explored to optimize the performance of this improved FBR. For the continuous operating trials, promising removal and recovery efficiencies were achieved at the phosphorus concentration of 25.0 mg/L: >90% of phosphorus could be removed under the optimum condition (pH=9, HRT=12 h, Mg : P=1.25 and N : P=7.5). Increasing the recycle flow rate and prolonging the contact time could also enhance the FBR efficiency. The crystal products obtained in FBR were analyzed in terms of composition and structure. Results indicated that almost pure struvite (>99%) was achieved at low calcium concentrations, which could be considered as a high quality fertilizer.

Abstract:Anaerobically digested swine wastewater contains high concentrations of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N). A pilot-scale experiment was carried out for nutrients removal and recovery from anaerobically digested swine wastewater by struvite crystallization. In the pilot plant, a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) and a continuous-flow reactor with struvite accumulation devices were designed and employed. The wastewater pH value was increased by CO(2) stripping, and the struvite crystallization process was performed without alkali and Mg(2+) additions. Results of the long-term operation of the system showed that, both reactors provided up to 85% P removal and recovery over wide ranges of aeration times (1.0-4.0 h), hydraulic retention times (HRT) (6.0-15.0 h) and temperatures (0-29.5°C) for an extended period of 247 d, in which approximate 30% of P was recovered by the struvite accumulation devices. However, 40-90% of NH(4)(+)-N removed was through air stripping instead of being immobilized in the recovered solids. The recovered products were detected and analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and chemical methods, which were proved to be struvite with purity of more than 90%. This work demonstrated the feasibility and effects of nutrients removal and recovery from anaerobically digested swine wastewater by struvite crystallization without chemical additions.

Abstract:Resource recovery in wastewater treatment is the major challenge for achieving sustainable development. Further than only treatment, the recovery and reuse of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) as a slow release fertilizer from actual swine wastewater (SW) was performed in this study. The development of a novel technique of converting soft sludge into hard particles using homogeneous granulation process in a fluidized bed reactor helps address the recovery. Under conditions of pH 8.5 ± 0.2, an Mg:P ratio of 1.2, total suspended solids (TSS) < 100 mg/L, and a 25 m/h up-flow velocity, the removal of N and P reached 69.8% and 96.8%, respectively. XRD and SEM-EDS analysis confirmed that N and P were crystallized as magnesium ammonium phosphate hexahydrate (struvite, NH4MgPO4·6H2O) phase with a purity greater than 68.3% and an average particle size of 0.88 mm. The increase in total suspended solids resulted in not only decreases in the removal efficiency and struvite purity but also an irregular morphology in the struvite crystals. Furthermore, increasing the magnesium concentration significantly reduced the crystal size of the pellets. The optimal up-flow velocity should be 1.5–2.4 times the minimum fluidization velocity (12.75 m/h). A cost-benefit estimation of actual swine wastewater treatment indicated a profit of approximately 0.345 USD per m3-actual swine wastewater. Fluidized-bed homogeneous granulation was proven to be a promising technology for recovering N and P from swine wastewater.

Abstract:Recovering nitrogen and phosphorus through struvite crystallization from swine wastewater has gained increasing interest. However, effluents of anaerobic digested swine wastewater contains other constituents including complex and hardly definited organic compounds, which may hinder the formation of struvite crystal and affect the purity of the precipitates by forming other insoluble minerals. Struvite precipitation was carried out at laboratory scale by adding magnesium chloride and potassium hydrogen as external sources of magnesium and phosphorus to equal Mg: N: P molar ratio, respectively, and regulating the pH at 9.5 in the absence and presence of organic compounds. Exceeded 70% phosphate and ammonium reduction were obtained. The recovered products were detected and analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and chemical methods, which were proved to be struvite crystals. The soluble organic compounds had less than 6% changes in amount during struvite precipitation and it was proved that the removal of TCOD during the precipitation of struvite may be attributed to the co-precipitation of struvite. The results indicate that struvite precipitation could be a viable method of ammonium removal in the presence of organic compounds from anaerobically digested swine manure.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the feasibility of nitrogen and phosphorus recovery from swine waste biogas digester effluent and the effects of pH and NH4+: Mg2+: PO4(3-) molar ratio on its precipitation.METHODS:Precipitation experiments with swine waste biogas digester effluent were conducted at pH 7.5, 8.0, 8.5, and 9.0 together with NH4+: Mg2+: PO4(3-) molar ratios 1: 0.2: 0.08, 1: 1: 1, and 1: 1.5: 1.5. Chemical and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis were done to determine the composition of the precipitate.RESULTS:The highest removal and recovery of NH4+ and PO4(3-) were achieved at pH 9.0 in each experiment. The elevation of pH to 9.0 alone could decrease the initial PO4(3-) concentration from 42 mg L(-1) to 4.7 mg L(-1) and 89.2% PO4(3-) recovery was achieved. The pH-molar ratio combination 9.0-1: 1.5: 1.5 effected 76.5% NH4+ and 68.5% PO4(3-) recovery. The molar ratio of 1: 1: 1 together with pH elevation to 9.0 was determined to be the optimum combination for both NH4+ and PO4(3-) removal as it recovered over 70% and 97% of the initial NH4+ and PO4(3-), respectively.CONCLUSIONS:Nitrogen and phosphorus can be recovered from biogas digester effluent as struvite.

Applying a Novel Sequential Double-Column Fluidized Bed Crystallization Process to the Recovery of Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium from Swine Wastewater

Abstract:Given the potential shortage of critical nutrients (e.g., nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) predicted in the near future, nutrient recovery technologies have attracted wide attention from the scientific community. In this study, a novel sequential double-column fluidized bed homogeneous crystallization (SDC-FBHC) process was developed for the simultaneous recovery of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) from actual swine wastewatera nutrient-rich source. Studied variables included pH, reaction time, ammonia release, Mg:P ratios, and up-flow velocity. Under conditions including pH 8.5–10.5, a Mg:P ratio of 1.4, a P:K ratio of 1.25, an up-flow velocity of 30 m/h, and base on the initial N, P, and K concentrations of 515.6, 95.5, and 334.5 mg/L, respectively, the maximum total removal (TR%) of N, P, and K reached 90.12%, 95.5%, and 62.7%, respectively, and the crystallization ratios (CR%) were 85.6%, 92.4%, and 52.8%, respectively. The sequential double-column fluidized bed homogeneous crystallization products were composed of crystal magnesium ammonia phosphate (MAP, MgNH4·PO4·6H2O, purity > 71.1 ± 2%, size 1.0 mm) and magnesium potassium phosphate phase (MPP, MgKPO4·6H2O, purity > 67.7 ± 3%, size 0.95 mm), which are ready for use as a slow-release fertilizer. The modeling of the minimum fluidization velocity resulted in values of 1.4–1.8 and 1.6–2.0 times that of the up-flow velocity for the effective fluidization of magnesium ammonia phosphate and magnesium potassium phosphate, respectively. The estimated profit for simultaneous recovery of N, P, and K from swine wastewater using the sequential double-column fluidized bed homogeneous crystallization process was 1.324 USD/m3-swine wastewater.

Abstract:The fast development of struvite precipitation provides an excellent opportunity for cost-effective removal and recovery of nitrogen and phosphorus in swine wastewater. Meanwhile, swine wastewater is rich in heavy metals and organic matters, whose interaction might change heavy metals' distribution and toxicity in recovered struvite. This research investigates the effect of organic matter on heavy metals' speciation variation during phosphorus (P) recovery. The results demonstrate that when the concentration of citric acid, humic acid, and tetracycline increases from 0 to 500 mg/L, the P recovery efficiency decreases from 95.14% to 85.39%, 81.76%, and 74.28%, respectively. When the concentration of ammonium citrate, tetrasodium iminodisuccinate, and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid vary from 0 to 100 mg/L, the P recovery efficiency decreases from 95.14 to 83.21, 85.97, and 81.32 mg/L, respectively, while the Cr in recovered struvite is increased from 1.88 to 2.92 mg/kg, 1.58–2.64 mg/kg and 0.86–12.6 mg/kg, respectively. It could be concluded that the pH increase promotes Cr and Cu's toxicity shifting to a stable state under the presence of citric acid, while Cr and Cu with humic acid or tetracycline shift to an active state. Besides, chelating agents can reduce heavy metal contents in the recovered struvite, but they also significantly inhibit the P recovery efficiency.

Abstract:Struvite (MgNH 4 PO 4 ·6H 2 O) precipitation is widely used for nutrient recovery from swine wastewater. Additional magnesium source is required to produce struvite for nitrogen recovery due to the limited magnesium content in swine wastewater. The present study investigated the optimized condition for treating swine wastewater and producing struvite crystals using swine slurry, commercial MgCl 2 , and seawater as magnesium sources. The results showed that swine slurry as an alternative source is feasible both technically and economically. The struvite precipitation process using swine slurry at pH 9.0 and [P] 0 / [Mg] 0 / [N] 0 M ratio = 1.2/1.0/1.0 achieved removal efficiencies of 82.7 %, 83.1 %, and 92.7 % for nitrogen, phosphorus, and magnesium, respectively. X-ray diffraction analysis validated the solid product consisted of struvite. Further investigations revealed the harvested precipitate had a struvite content of 72.7 % with low heavy metal impurity, which could be used as fertilizer. Nutrient recovery from swine manure is a future driver for the economic and environmental sustainability of agricultural and wastewater treatment processes.

Abstract:In this study, we propose the application of struvite precipitation for the sustainable recovery of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from anaerobic digestion (AD) effluents derived from swine manure. The optimal conditions for four major factors that affect the recovery of N and P were derived by conducting batch experiments on AD effluents obtained from four AD facilities. The optimal conditions were a pH of 10.0, NH4-N:Mg:PO4-P molar ratio of 1:1.4:1, mixing intensity of 240 s−1, and mixing duration of 2 min. Under these optimal conditions, the removal efficiencies of NH4-N and PO4-P were approximately 74% and 83%, respectively, whereas those of Cu and Zn were approximately 74% and 79%, respectively. Herein, a model for swine manure treatment that incorporates AD, struvite precipitation, and biological treatment processes is proposed. We applied this model to 85 public biological treatment facilities in South Korea and recovered 4722 and 51 tons/yr of NH4-N and PO4-P, respectively. The economic analysis of the proposed model’s performance predicts a lack of profitability due to the high cost of chemicals; however, this analysis does not consider the resulting protection of the hydrological environment. Field-scale studies should be conducted in future to prove the effectiveness of the model.

Abstract:Swine wastewater containing high concentration of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) was treated by struvite precipitation method. The pH showed to have strong influence on N and P removal, whereas the excess of ammonia in the reaction medium did not show influence. The precipitated crystals were identified and analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and surface area (BET) revealing that there was the formation of a pure and crystalline phase mesostructured at pH 9.5 with an average crystal size in nanometric scale.

Abstract:Anaerobically treated swine wastewater contains large amounts of orthophosphate phosphorus, ammonium nitrogen and organic substances with potential nutrients recovery via struvite electrochemical precipitation post-treatment. Lab-scale batch experiments were systematically conducted in this study to investigate the effects of initial pH, current density, organic substances upon nutrients removal, and precipitates quality (characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and element analysis via acid dissolution method) during the struvite electrochemical precipitation process. The optimal conditions for the initial pH of 7.0 and current density of 4 mA/cm2 favoured nutrients removal and precipitates quality (struvite purity of up to 94.2%) in the absence of organic substances. By contrast, a more adverse effect on nutrients removal, morphology and purity of precipitates was found by humic acid than by sodium alginate and bovine albumin in the individual presence of organic substances. Low concentration combination of bovine albumin, sodium alginate, and humic acid showed antagonistic inhibition effects, whereas a high concentration combination showed the accelerating inhibition effects. Initial pH adjustment from 7 to 8 could effectively mitigate the adverse effects on struvite electrochemical precipitation under high concentration combined with organic substances (500 mg/L bovine albumin, 500 mg/L sodium alginate, and 1500 mg/L humic acid); this may help improve struvite electrochemical precipitation technology in practical application for nutrients recovery from anaerobically treated swine wastewater.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) is considered the most important micro-element needed for every living thing. Even though they have limited amount, P and nitrogen (N) are responsible for eutrophication in water bodies. This paper aimed to give an insight into the removal efficiency of nutrients and struvite crystallization of slowly soluble fertilizer MgNH4PO4.6H2O, which is also called NH4+-struvite. Besides, using fluidized bed homogeneous crystallization (FBHC) system can reduce impurities in granular struvite generated during the reaction as the advantage function itself. The results showed the changes in pH, magnesium (Mg2+), phosphate (PO43--P), ammonium (NH4+-N), and appearance of spontaneous struvite precipitation over time. Using synthesis urine sample with adjusted pH and Mg2+ concentration to determine the optimal conditions for granular NH4+-struvite recovery to maintain Mg and P removal efficiency up to 99% in steady state. In this study, the removal efficiency of N was about 80 – 85% maximum. The initial results indicated the feasibility of simultaneous crystallizing NH4+-struvite which is mentioned above. It could easily form at pH around 8 – 9. On the other hand, urea hydrolysis makes a pH increase in urine from 6.5 to less than 9.0 at room temperature. This might cause a heavy impact on the NH4+-N crystallization during the formation of granular struvite if there has no suitable NH4+-N pretreatment options. For Mg recovery, the concentration of Mg is detrimental in the creation of struvite. This will bring better removal efficiency if there is an available Mg source in nature which can be reused directly in an environmentally eco-friendly way. The total mass of struvite precipitate obtained in the form of nuclei corresponds to 200 g/m3 of urine during 24 days operation.

Abstract:Phosphate is an important non-renewable resource. Over the recent years, due to the rapid explosion in world population the demand for phosphate fertilizer for use in grain production is burgeoning, resulting in the phosphate resources becoming increasingly scarce. Therefore, phosphate recovery from wastes has been drawing much attention. In this study, an attempt was made to recover phosphate from swine wastewater through struvite crystallization using plant ash as the alkali reagent. An increase in the solution pH and potassium concentration induced a drop in the struvite purity and a corresponding rise in the K-struvite purity. The maximum K-struvite purity was obtained at pH 10. The competitiveness of the K-struvite formation induced a significant relationship with the potassium concentration. When the K is to TAN molar ratio was 6, the competition ratio between the K-struvite and struvite reached 93.7%. The experimental results with actual wastewater revealed the feasibility of utilizing plant ash as the alkali reagent in struvite crystallization. Under optimal conditions, ˃96% of phosphate could be recovered from swine wastewater. An economic analysis revealed that the recovery cost of the proposed process was 1.27 $/kg PO4-P, which includes the costs incurred for chemicals, energy, manpower and maintenance. In fact, 0.31 $/kg PO4-P can be saved with the proposed process compared to the one using NaOH.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) recovery from swine manure has attracted considerable interest for biomass valorization. In this study, a catalytic-thermal hydrolysis (TH) process combined with struvite crystallization was investigated to promote P and N conversion fromswine manure. Its potential as a phosphate-based fertilizer was investigated. Two periods for P solubilization and transformation were observed, i.e., an initial increase with reaction time followed by a decrease as treatment continued. Nitrogen conversion efficiency increased with increasing temperature and time. Treatment of swine manure by catalytic-TH with HCl + H2O2 showed the best performance for P and N solubilization and transformation. With a Mg2+/PO43- molar ratio of 2.49 and a pH of 9.11, the struvite crystallization efficiency from the supernatant after catalytic-TH with HCl + H2O2 reached 99.2%. Hydroculture bioassay showed that struvite had a positive effect on the early growth of wheat. The P concentrations in both root and shoot tissues for struvite treatment were more than two times higher than that of soluble P. These encouraging results warrant further studies on the conversion of biowaste given that recycling nutrients sources may outperform traditional synthetic fertilizers. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. Effects of pH, molar ratios and pre-treatment on phosphorus recovery through struvite crystallization from effluent of anaerobically digested swine wastewater

Abstract:Struvite precipitation has been proven to be an effective method in removing and recovering ammonia nitrogen (N) and phosphate phosphorus (P) from wastewater. In this study, effects of pH, molar ratios and pre-treatment of effluent of anaerobically digested swine wastewater were investigated to improve struvite crystallization. The magnesium : ammonium : phosphate ratio of 1.2 : 1.0 : 1.0 was found to be optimal, yet the molar ratio in the wastewater was 1 : 74.9 : 1.8. From the analysis, the optimum pH was between 8.0 and 9.0 for maximal phosphate P release and from 8.0 to 10.0 for maximal ammonia N and phosphate P removal from real wastewater. Analysis from Visual MINTEQ predicted the pH range of 7-11 for ammonia N and phosphate P removal and recovery as struvite. For pre-treatment, microwave pre-treatment was ineffective for phosphate P release but ultrasound pre-treatment showed up to 77.4% phosphate P release at 1,000 kJ/L of energy dose. Precipitates analysis showed that phosphorus and magnesium in the collected precipitate had almost same values as theoretical values, but the ammonia content was less than the theoretical value.

Abstract:Effluent from fertilizer-manufacturing facility contains a large amount of nutrients. In this study, wastewater was used to synthesize fertilizer-grade struvite through reaction with a bittern solution (denoted as R-B). The produced struvite was compared with different wastewater composition, including wastewater with added MgCl2.6H2O (R-Mg) and artificial wastewater with bittern solution (A-B). The results showed that the nutrient recovery of R-B was comparable to that of R-Mg sample, in which N and P were recovered by 64–68 % and 89–91 %, respectively. The nutrient recovery is feasible for crystallized struvite employing bittern. Energy-dispersive X-ray mapping profiles and X-ray diffraction revealed that the presence of impurities in real wastewater effect the crystal size and have attracted more mixed ions into struvite crystals. The solubility testing showed that N release in acidic and water was 23.3 wt% and 6.8 wt% after 60 days, indicating that the struvite was an extremely slow-soluble fertilizer for agricultural applications.

Abstract:A sustainable way to recover phosphorus (P) in swine wastewater involves a preliminary step of P dissolution followed by the separation of particulate organic matter. The next two steps are firstly the precipitation of struvite crystals done by adding a crystallization reagent (magnesia) and secondly the filtration of the crystals. A design of experiments with five process parameters was set up to optimize the size of the struvite crystals in a synthetic swine wastewater. More than 90% of P was recovered as large crystals of struvite in optimal conditions which were: low Mg:Ca ratio (2.25:1), the leading parameter, high N:P ratio (3:1), moderate stirring rate (between 45 and 90 rpm) and low temperature (below 20 °C).These results were obtained despite the presence of a large amount of calcium and using a cheap reactant (MgO). The composition of the precipitates was identified by Raman analysis and solid dissolution. Results showed that amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) co-precipitated with struvite and that carbonates were incorporated with solid fractions.
