Abstract:The origin of complex superstructures of biomaterials in biological systems and the amazing self-assembly mechanisms of their emergence have attracted a great deal of attention recently. Mimicking nature, diverse kinds of hydrophilic polymers with different functionalities and organic insoluble matrices have been designed for the morphogenesis of inorganic crystals. In this Research News, emerging new strategies for morphogenesis and controlled crystal growth of minerals, that is, selective adsorption and mesoscale transformation for highly ordered superstructures, the combination of a synthetic hydrophilic polymer with an insoluble matrix, a substrate, or the air/solution interface, and controlled crystallization in a mixed solvent are highlighted. It is shown that these new strategies can be even further extended to morphogenesis and controlled crystallization of diverse inorganic or inorganic-organic hybrid materials with structural complexity, structural specialties, and improved functionalities.

Abstract:Nucleation is the key step of crystallization and is also the most difficult part to observe, as it evolves in very short temporal and spatial resolution. Conflicts between the features of classical nucleation theory and the observed nucleation behaviors inspire hypotheses of nonclassical nucleation mechanisms. In this Review, experimental evidence and molecular dynamics simulations involving the structure and formation mechanisms of a series of precursors and intermediate species, such as prenucleation clusters, liquid precursors, and amorphous precursors that in some cases coexist in a single system and successively transform into one another, are summarized to advance the understanding on the nucleation mechanisms of crystalline phases. What’s more, recent progress of building two-dimensional materials avoiding the nucleation barrier and accommodating nonclassical nucleation within the classical nucleation framework is outlined, which provides a new perspective on crystal nucleation: a classical view on nonclassical nucleation.
Chemical and architectural intricacy from nanoscale tetrahedra and their analogues

Abstract:The tetrahedron, as the simplest platonic shape, is a profound building block with the potential to create intricate superstructures. Noteworthy designs utilizing tetrahedral building blocks include the Sierpiński tetrahedron (the most fundamental three-dimensional fractal), a one-dimensional helical structure known as the tetrahelix, and various crystalline and quasicrystalline packings. Historically, the practicality of tetrahedral superstructures has been evident, providing stable, well-defined frameworks for various constructions, including truss bridges, tower cranes, and electricity transmission line pylons. In the field of self-assembled nanocrystal superlattices, tetrahedral nanocrystals, as building blocks, occupy a unique place among all the possible nanoscale particles. Mathematical models, simulation work, and experimental studies using nanocrystals in the laboratory have suggested that self-assembled structures derived from nanoscale tetrahedral building blocks are notably intricate, giving rise to new horizons of high-entropy nanocrystal superlattices. An important implication from previous works is that such tetrahedral nanocrystal superlattices form through highly delicate interparticle interactions, emphasizing the importance of the fine features of these nanocrystals. In this article, we summarize the advances in superlattices assembled from tetrahedral nanocrystals. We first define the tetrahedron and tetrahedron analogues based on Conway's transformation and graph theory, underscoring their relevance to the crystallization process producing tetrahedral nanocrystals. Then, we showcase previous reports on the synthesis of tetrahedral nanocrystals and the resulting nanocrystal superstructures. Finally, we conclude by offering insights and perspective into the chemical and architectural intricacy that could emerge from tetrahedral nanocrystals.

Supercrystal Engineering of Nanoarrows Enabled by Tailored Concavity

Abstract:Self-assembly of nanoparticles into supercrystals represents a powerful approach to create unique and complex superstructures with fascinating properties and novel functions, but the complexity in spatial configuration, and the tunability in lattice structure are still quite limited compared to the crystals formed by atoms and molecules. Herein, shallowly concave gold nanoarrows with a unique concave-convex geometry are synthesized and employed as novel building blocks for shape-directed self-assembly of a wealth of complex 3D supercrystals with unprecedented configurations. The obtained diverse superstructures including six Interlocking-type supercrystals and three Packing-type supercrystals exhibit four types of Bravais lattices (i.e., tP, oI, tI, and oF) and six types of crystallographic space groups (i.e., Pmmm, I222, Pnnm, Ibam, I4/mmm, and Fmmm), which have not been documented in the mesoscale self-assembled systems. It has been revealed that the relative yield of different supercrystal structures is mainly determined by the packing density and deformability of the supercrystals, which are closely related to the tailored concavity of the nanoparticles and is affected by the particle concentration, thus allowing for programmable self-assembly into specific supercrystals through particle shape modulation. The concavity-enabled supercrystal engineering may open a new avenue toward unconventional nanoparticle superstructures with expanded complexity, tunability, and functionality. Shallowly concave gold nanoarrows with a delicately controlled concave-convex geometry are synthesized and employed as unique building blocks for shape-directed self-assembly of a wealth of unprecedented, complex supercrystals. Abstract:Many biominerals, such as mollusk nacre, sea urchin, bone and teeth, are found to form by an amorphous precursor pathway, and these biominerals have remarkable properties, which are better than their artificial material counterparts that are formed at high temperatures and high pressures. More than ever, synthesizing technologically relevant materials following nature's way with a specific size, shape, orientation, organization, and complex form has been a focus of ongoing interest due to the increasing need for low cost and environmentally friendly approaches to processing advanced materials. Herein, we present recent developments in the crystallization process from amorphous precursors by primarily drawing on results from our own laboratory, and discuss some unique characteristics from the transformation process that can be exploited for the design and synthesis of artificial functional materials.

Abstract:Complex hierarchical shapes are widely known in biogenic single crystals, but growing of intricate synthetic metal single crystals is still a challenge. Here we report on a simple method for growing intricately shaped single crystals of gold, each consisting of a micron-sized crystal surrounded by a nanoporous structure, while the two parts comprise a single crystal. This is achieved by annealing thin films of gold and germanium to solidify a eutectic composition melt at a hypoeutectic concentration (Au-enriched composition). Transmission electron microscopy and synchrotron submicron scanning diffractometry and imaging confirms that the whole structure was indeed a single crystal. A kinetic model showing how this intricate single-crystal structure can be grown is presented.

In Situ Constructing the Kinetic Roadmap of Octahedral Nanocrystal Assembly Toward Controlled Superlattice Fabrication

Abstract:Crystallization and growth of anisotropic nanocrystals (NCs) into distinct superlattices were studied in real time, yielding kinetic details and designer parameters for scale-up fabrication of functional materials. Using octahedral PbS NC blocks, we discovered that NC assembly involves a primary lamellar ordering of NC-detached Pb(OA)2 molecules on the front-spreading solvent surfaces. Upon a spontaneous increase of NC concentration during solvent processing, PbS NCs preferentially self-assembled into an orientation-disordered face-centered cubic (fcc) superlattice, which subsequently transformed into a body-centered cubic (bcc) superlattice with single NC-orientational ordering across individual domains. Unlike the deformation-based transformation route claimed previously, this solid–solid phase transformation involved a hidden intermediate formation of a lamellar-confined liquid interface at cost of the disassembly (melting) of small fcc grains. Such highly condensed and liquidized NCs recrystallized into the stable bcc phase with an energy reduction of 1.16 kBT. This energy-favorable and high NC-fraction-driven bcc phase grew as a 2D film at a propagation rate of 0.74 μm/min, smaller than the 1.23 μm/min observed in the early nucleated fcc phase under a dilute NC environment. Taking such insights and defined parameters, we designed experiments to manipulate the NC assembly pathway and achieved scalable fabrication of a large/single bcc supercrystal with coherent ordering of NC translation and atomic plane orientation. Abstract:Supramolecular crystals and crystallization are general concepts used to describe broader aspects of ordered structures and their formation in the three-dimensional (3D) bulk and solution and in 2D thin film states at length scales ranging from sub-nanometers to sub-micrometers. Although the fundamental crystallographic principles are still held in these structures, starting from their basic repeating units (motifs), it is not necessary that each atomic position within their motifs possesses translational symmetry in long range order, but could have quasi-long range or short range order. As a result, the motif becomes the smallest unit for constructing 3D or 2D ordered structures that maintain the long range translational order. The formation of these supramolecular ordered structures essentially follows the physical principle of phase transformations, involving either nucleation and growth or spinodal decomposition mechanisms. However, larger ordered structures require stronger and more cooperative interactions to sustain their structures in equilibrium or stable states. We propose utilization of collective secondary interactions, similar to those found in biological and living systems, to generate sufficient interactions and stabilize these structures. Furthermore, when the basic unit of the structure becomes increasingly larger and heavier, thermal (density) fluctuations during the phase transitions may not be sufficiently large to overcome transition barriers of the basic unit. In these cases, external fields might be required to stimulate the magnitude of thermal (density) fluctuation and/or redistribute (thus, decrease) a single transition barrier into several stepwise transition sequences with lower barriers for each transition, and thus increase the speed of phase transformations.
Programming of Supercrystals Using Replicable DNA‐Functionalized Colloids

Abstract:The development of self-replicating systems is of great importance in research on the origin of life. As the most iconic molecules, nucleic acids have provided prominent examples of the fabrication of self-replicating artificial nanostructures. However, it is still challenging to construct sophisticated synthetic systems that can create large-scale or three-dimensionally ordered nanomaterials using self-replicating nanostructures. By integrating a template system containing DNA-functionalized colloidal seeds with a simplified DNA strand-displacement circuit programmed subsystem to produce DNA-functionalized colloidal copies, we developed a facile enthalpy-mediated strategy to control the replication and catalytic assembly of DNA-functionalized colloids in a time-dependent manner. The replication efficiency and crystal quality of the resulting superlattice structures can be effectively increased by regulating the molar ratio of the template to the copy colloids. By constructing binary systems from two types of gold nanoparticles (or proteins), superlattice structures with different crystal symmetries can be obtained through the replication and catalytic assembly processes. This programmable enthalpy-mediated approach was easily leveraged to achieve the phase transformation and catalytic amplification of colloidal crystals starting from different initial template crystals. This work offers a potential way to construct self-replicating artificial systems that exhibit complicated phase behaviors and can produce large-scale superlattice nanomaterials.

Abstract:We introduce a phase-field crystal model that creates an array of complex three- and two-dimensional crystal structures via a numerically tractable three-point correlation function. The three-point correlation function is designed in order to energetically favor the principal interplanar angles of a target crystal structure. This is achieved via an analysis performed by examining the crystal's structure factor. This approach successfully yields energetically stable simple cubic, diamond cubic, simple hexagonal, graphene layers, and CaF2 crystals. To illustrate the ability of the method to yield a particularly complex and technologically important crystal structure, we show how this three-point correlation function method can be used to generate perovskite crystals.

Hierarchical Structural Complexity in Atomically Precise Nanocluster Frameworks

Abstract:The supramolecular chemistry of nanoclusters is a flourishing area of nano-research; however, the controllable assembly of cluster nano-building blocks in different arrays remains challenging. In this work, we report the hierarchical structural complexity of atomically precise nanoclusters in micrometric linear chains (1D array), grid networks (2D array) and superstructures (3D array). In the crystal lattice, the Ag-29(SSR)(12)(PPh3)(4) nanoclusters can be viewed as unassembled cluster dots (Ag-29-0D). In the presence of Cs+ cations, the Ag-29(SSR)(12) nano-building blocks are selectively assembled into distinct arrays with different oxygen-carrying solvent molecules-Cs@Ag-29(SSR)(12)(DMF)(x) as 1D linear chains (Ag-29-1D), Cs@Ag-29(SSR)(12)(NMP)(x) as 2D grid networks (Ag-29-2D), and Cs@Ag-29(SSR)(12)(TMS)(x) as 3D superstructures (Ag-29-3D). Such self-assemblies of these Ag-29(SSR)(12) units have not only been observed in their crystalline state, but also in their amorphous state. Due to the diverse surface structures and crystalline packing modes, these Ag-29-based assemblies manifest distinguishable optical absorptions and emissions in both solutions and crystallized films. Furthermore, the surface areas of the nanocluster crystals are evaluated, the maximum value of which occurs when the cluster nano-building blocks are assembled into 2D arrays (i.e. Ag-29-2D). Overall, this work presents an exciting example of the hierarchical assembly of atomically precise nanoclusters by simply controlling the adsorbed molecules on the cluster surface.
Direct observation and control of non-classical crystallization pathways in binary colloidal systems

Abstract:Crystallization stands as a prime example of self-assembly. Elementary building blocks converge, seemingly adhering to an intricate blueprint, orchestrating order from chaos. While classical theories have long described crystallization as a monomer-by-monomer addition (whether involving atoms, ions, molecules or colloids), non-classical crystallization pathways introduce complexity. Using microscopic charged particles as monomers, we reveal the precise mechanisms underpinning the formation of ionic colloidal crystals. Our findings indicate that these crystals primarily crystallize through a two-step process, wherein metastable amorphous `blobs' condense from the gas phase, subsequently evolving into small binary crystals. Once formed, these small crystals grow to form large faceted structures through three main processes that occur simultaneously: addition of free monomers from bulk, capture and absorption of surrounding blobs, and oriented attachment of other crystals. These complex crystallization pathways occur both in bulk and on surfaces across a range of particle sizes and interaction strengths, resulting in a diverse array of crystal types and morphologies. Harnessing our ability to tune the interaction potential through small changes in salt concentration, we developed a continuous dialysis approach that allows fine control over the interaction strength in both time and space. This method enables us to discover and characterize a wide variety of crystal structures in a single experiment, including a previously unreported low-density hollow structure and the heteroepitaxial formation of composite crystal structures.

Abstract:Self-assembly into highly ordered superstructures and control over the shape and the size of inorganic materials is an important character of natural growth phenomena. In biological systems, the results of long-term evolutionary optimization processes are intimately related to specific functions. Bio-inspired materials synthesis is a powerful strategy for the synthesis of advanced materials with complex shape, hierarchical organization and controlled size, structure and polymorph in aqueous environments under ambient conditions. Increased understanding of biomineralization mechanisms has greatly enhanced the possibilities of biomimetic mineralization and template synthesis approaches. Bio-inspired materials with complex structures and advanced functions always attract attention because of their unique properties, which have paved the way to many potential applications. Organic templates such as biopolymers and synthetic amphiphilic polymers can be employed to understand the interaction of the organic matrix with the developing inorganic crystals at a molecular level and to address the question which factors lead to the remarkable crystallographic orientation of the crystalline phase, crystal growth and nanoparticle assembly, which is often observed in biomineralization. Clear evidence has shown that crystallization does not necessarily proceed along the classical crystallization process, which is the attachment of ions/molecules to a primary nanoparticle forming a single crystal, instead, crystallization can also proceed along a particle mediated self-assembly pathway. Mesocrystal is quasi-single crystal consisting of ordered assemblies of small, anisotropic, and vectorially aligned nanoparticles, thus forming an entirely new class of porous metamaterials through mesoscopic transformations and nanoparticle precursors. Such composite crystals are of considerable interest to a broad range of disciplines including materials chemistry and life science as well as crystallization-related fields in general. It has been found that nanoclustered crystal growth, mediated by organic templates, is a basic characteristic of biomineralization that enables the formation of composite materials with elaborate morphologies and structures. During the past decade, exploration as well as application of these bio-inspired synthesis strategies has led to novel materials with specific size, shape, orientation, composition, hierarchical organization and assembled superstructures. This overview tries to capture the concepts and recent progress in this rapidly developing field, and prospects for the future in this field has been discussed.

Abstract:Synthesis of inorganic nanostructures designed from the internal crystal structure has been a subject of intensive research in the past decade. By virtue of structural understanding, attention was devoted to novel strategies to control morphology and phase formation of nanostructures, and even their assembly to hierarchitectures. Also, the structural analysis gives an alternative way to understand or predict the potential physicochemical properties of inorganic solids. In this article our recent advances in nanostructure generation and their physicochemical-property understanding from crystal structures are highlighted.
Self-assembly of photonic crystals by controlling the nucleation and growth of DNA-coated colloids

Abstract:Significance Assembling optical metamaterials from DNA-coated colloids has been a central goal of programmable self-assembly for decades. Despite significant advances in expanding the structural diversity of colloidal crystals, a lack of understanding of the crystallization pathways has hindered the realization of programmable metamaterials. In this paper, we combine experiments and theory to develop a complete understanding of the crystallization dynamics. We show that the nucleation and growth kinetics of DNA-coated colloids are fundamentally different from those of atoms or small molecules, owing to an effective friction that arises from transient DNA hybridization. By incorporating this effective friction into classical theories, we predict the absolute rates of nucleation and growth with quantitative accuracy, enabling the design of protocols for making photonic crystals.
