Abstract:High-quality organic and inorganic van der Waals (vdW) solids are realized using methylammonium lead halide (CH3 NH3 PbI3 ) as the organic part (organic perovskite) and 2D inorganic monolayers as counterparts. Abstract:Molecular dielectric switches constitute a type of intelligent materials that are highly coveted for their distinctive advantages of switchable dielectric responses, lightweight, and mechanical flexibility. Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid perovskites have demonstrated excellent promise for assembling dielectric switches, in which the dynamic motions of organic moieties afford driving force to trigger switchable dielectric phase transition. Here, we successfully assembled a new lead-free hybrid double perovskite, (CHA)4CuBiBr8 (1, CHA = cyclohexylammonium), adopting a typical 2D structural motif, which shows dielectric anisotropy and bistable behaviors during the reversible phase transition near T c = 378 K (the Curie temperature). That is, its dielectric constants could be switched and tuned between high-dielectric and low-dielectric states. Structure analyses reveal that the ordered-disordered transformation of the organic CHA+ moiety and distortion of inorganic framework account for its phase transition. This result will stimulate further exploration of molecular dielectric switches in this 2D environmentally friendly family.

Abstract:Recently, impressive progress has been achieved on a new and brilliant scheme for a solid-state quadratic nonlinear optical (NLO) switch, which holds enormous potential for developing next-generation intelligent optoelectronic devices. However, most of them are still restricted by their poor switching capability and low operating temperature. Herein, we present a rational design approach for developing a highly efficient hybrid halide NLO switching material through introducing conjugated aromatic Schiff base cations. As expected, an organic–inorganic hybrid halide compound (C 10 H 14 N)PbBr 3 ( 1 , C 10 H 14 N is N -propylbenzylideneaminium) has been developed, which exhibits highly efficient modulation of the quadratic NLO property (1.05 times that of KH 2 PO 4 ) and a high phase transition temperature of 411 K. Besides, the second harmonic generation (SHG) powder test demonstrates that this material is phase matchable. Microscopic single-crystal structure analysis combined with theoretical calculations reveals that the high-performance NLO switching behaviour of 1 originates from the reversible ordered/disordered transformation of the aromatic Schiff base N -propylbenzylideneaminium cations accompanied by the re-orientation of the inorganic [PbBr 3 ] ∞ framework. More importantly, further investigations show that the conjugated effect of the Schiff base cations makes important contributions to the NLO properties of 1 . This work opens up a new route for designing highly efficient quadratic NLO switches and provides a promising way to further develop high-performance solid-state phase transition materials ( e.g. ferroelectrics) and intelligent optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskites as solution-processable semiconductors have catapulted to be a promising class of optoelectronic materials. In this manuscript, we utilized applying H/F substitution to achieve structural dimensions tailoring at the molecular level and tunable phase transition, dielectric, and optical features in organic lead-bromide hybrids, which have been rarely reported. The parent [piperidinium]PbBr3 ([PD]PbBr3) has a one-dimensional (1D) chain-like perovskite structure and shows successive solid-solid structural phase transitions. After monofluoride substitution, [4-FPD]6Pb5Br16 (4-FPD = 4-fluoro-piperidinylaminium) presents a two-dimensional (2D) wave-like stacking and significantly enhanced phase transition temperature, mainly attributed to the new C‒F bonds generating extra intermolecular interactions. Exceptionally, difluoride substituted [4,4-DFPD]2PbBr4 (4,4-DFPD = 4,4-difluoro-piperidinylaminium) with a 2D layered perovskite structure demonstrates interestingly irreversible to reversible structural phase transitions, accompanied by evident dielectric and nonlinear optical transformations. Moreover, the three hybrids show tunable semiconducting bandgaps and photoluminescence. This work provides great inspiration for the design of desired functional materials by rational chemical strategies and the intriguing properties of the new hybrids would also reveal promising applications in optoelectronic devices and data storage, etc.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid materials, which exhibit structural diversity and rich physical properties, have shown great potential as basic device elements in the optoelectronic field. Herein, we report a new lead-free organic-inorganic hybrid compound, [C3H8N](2)SbBr5 (1, where C3H8N+ is the cyclopropylammonium cation), which demonstrates tunable dielectric responses near room temperature, derived from its two successive structural phase transitions at the vicinity of T-1 = 290 K and T-2 = 315 K, respectively. That is, its dielectric constants change from high-dielectric (above T-2), moderate-dielectric (between T-2 and T-1) and low-dielectric states (below T-1). Such dielectric behaviors coincide well with a series of reversible thermal peaks in the DSC curve. Further structural analyses reveal that the order-disorder of organic cationic moieties accounts for the phase transition at T-2, while the change of the molecular configuration provides the driving force to the phase transition at T-1. Such phase transition behaviours differ from those of the majority of previously reported dielectric phase transition materials. Moreover, theoretical calculation of the electronic band structure of 1 reveals the direct feature with a band-gap value of similar to 2.36 eV. This work affords broader design flexibility for the future exploration of electrically-ordered materials in the organic-inorganic hybrid family.

Abstract:Owing to the diversity of structure and potential applications in the field of electrics, sensors, and light-emitting diodes, lead halide perovskites have attracted great attention in recent years. Especially those lead halide perovskites with non-centrosymmetric crystal structures usually exhibit nonlinear optical (NLO) characteristics, which may endow them photoelectricity switching functionality. In this work, a lead-based hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite (HOIP) material, trimethyliodomethylammonium lead trichloride (TMIM•PbCl3), is obtained on the basis of tetramethylammonium tetramethylammonium lead chloride through halogen substitution on the cation part. It shows dual-phase-transition behavior around 345 and 358 K, which is significantly improved. TMIM•PbCl3 crystallizes in the chiral space group, P212121, and shows a well-defined second harmonic generation (SHG) response, and good switching endurance, which makes it an excellent candidate for SHG switching material. This work highlights the importance of halogen substitution for crystal engineering and may pave way for the further exploration of the optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:For a class of 2D hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite semiconductors based on $\pi$-conjugated organic cations, we predict quantitatively how varying the organic and inorganic component allows control over the nature, energy and localization of carrier states in a quantum-well-like fashion. Our first-principles predictions, based on large-scale hybrid density-functional theory with spin-orbit coupling, show that the interface between the organic and inorganic parts within a single hybrid can be modulated systematically, enabling us to select between different type-I and type-II energy level alignments. Energy levels, recombination properties and transport behavior of electrons and holes thus become tunable by choosing specific organic functionalizations and juxtaposing them with suitable inorganic components.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid materials have become potential candidates in fields of light emitting diodes (LEDs), mechanical switches, energy conversion due to their excellent magneto-opto-electronic properties. Further improving the performance of materials is a prerequisite for achieving their commercial application. Currently, many effective strategies have been proposed and validated to enhance the properties of materials, but both simultaneously realizing the improvement phase transition temperature and dimensional regulation of materials remains a huge challenge. Here, we successfully synthesized two hybrid materials, (pyrrolidinium) PbI 3 (Com-1) and (3-hydroxypyrrolium) 6 Pb 5 I 16 (Com-2). In this work, the strategy of inserting intermolecular hydrogen bonds cleverly achieves a significant increase in phase transition temperature ( Delta T = 81 K) and dimensional regulation (1D to 2D). Moreover, semiconductor properties of two compounds are investigated to be direct bandgap semiconductor. In short, inserting intermolecular hydrogen bonds between molecules is an effective strategy to improve physical performance.
Near-room-temperature reversible switching of quadratic optical nonlinearities in a one-dimensional perovskite-like hybrid

Abstract:The switching of quadratic nonlinear optical (NLO) effects between two or more NLO states of solid-state materials represents an intriguing new branch in the field of photoelectrics and optics. While structural phase transitions have shown potential in this field, near-room-temperature reversible NLO switches have rarely been reported. To exploit new NLO switching materials within the structurally flexible class of hybrid perovskites, here, we synthesize a one-dimensional perovskite-like hybrid, (MP)PbBr3 (where MP+ is a 1-methylpyrrolidinium cation), through a facile solution method, which exhibits strong second harmonic generation (SHG) activities with an intensity of ~1.6 times as large as potassium dihydrogen phosphate. Intriguingly, (MP)PbBr3 enables the near-room temperature reversible switching of SHG properties, showing a large NLO switching contrast of up to ~40 between its SHG-active and SHG-inactive phases, beyond most of its liquid counterparts. Further microscopic structural analyses reveal that the dynamic ordering of the organic MP+ cation and inorganic chain-like skeleton triggers its centrosymmetric (P63/mmc) to acentric (P212121) phase transition at 316 K upon cooling, resulting in a crucial contribution to its NLO switching properties. This work illustrates the potential of this material as a candidate for solid-state NLO switches and will promote the development of NLO materials within the family of low-dimensional hybrid perovskites.

Abstract:Abstract Two-dimensional organic-inorganic hybrid halide perovskites possess diverse structural polymorphs with versatile physical properties, which can be controlled by order-disorder transition of the spacer cation, making them attractive for constructing semiconductor homojunctions. Here, we demonstrate a space-cation-dopant-induced phase stabilization approach to creating a lateral homojunction composed of ordered and disordered phases within a two-dimensional perovskite. By doping a small quantity of pentylammonium into (butylammonium) 2 PbI 4 or vice versa, we effectively suppress the ordering transition of the spacer cation and the associated out-of-plane octahedral tilting in the inorganic framework, resulting in phase pining of the disordered phase when decreasing temperature or increasing pressure. This enables epitaxial growth of a two-dimensional perovskite homojunction with tunable optical properties under temperature and pressure stimuli, as well as directional exciton diffusion across the interface. Our results demonstrate a previously unexplored strategy for constructing two-dimensional perovskite heterostructures by thermodynamic tuning and spacer cation doping.

Abstract:The organic–inorganic hybrid materials (OIHMs) with stimuli-responsive features show the important scientific attraction in a multifunctional material application field, such as optoelectronic memory and sensors. Especially, designing a functional material with both dielectric switching and second-harmonic generation (SHG) remains attractive. Herein, we report a new OIHM [C7H15NCl] SbCl4 as a phase matching nonlinear optical material and dielectric switch functional materials. It undergoes a reversible phase transition at 297 K and exhibit a harmonic generation (SHG) effect of about 0.53 times that of KH2PO4 (KDP). Meanwhile, it also possesses potential semiconducting properties. This work might provide a strategy for designing novel multifunctional materials in the field of crystals and dielectrics.

Abstract:Continuous band structure tuning, e.g., doping with different atoms, is one of the most important features of inorganic semiconductors. However, this can hardly be realized in organic semicondutors. Here, we report the first example of fine-tuning organic semiconductor band structures by alloying structurally similar derivatives into one single phase. By incorporating halogen atoms on different positions of the backbone, BDOPV derivatives with complementary intramolecular or intermolecular charge distributions were obtained. To maximize the Coloumbic attractive interactions and minimize repulsive interactions, they form antiparallel cofacial stacking in monocomponent or in alloy single crystals, resulting in efficient π orbital overlap. Benefiting from self-assembly induced solid state "olefin metathesis" reaction, it was observed, for the first time, that three BDOPV derivatives cocrystallized in one single crystal. Molecules with different energy levels serve like the dopants in inorganic semiconductors. Consequently, as the total number of halogen atoms increased, highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) levels of the alloy single crystals decreased monotonously in the range from -5.94 to -6.96 eV and -4.19 to -4.48 eV, respectively.

Abstract:AbstractDeveloping of lead-free double perovskites have drawn significant interest for photovoltaics and optoelectronics as the materials have the potential to avoid toxicity and instability issues associated with lead-based organometallic perovskites. In this study, we report the optoelectronic properties of a new group of non-toxic lead-free organic-inorganic halide double perovskites composed of caesium (Cs), methylammonium (MA) or formamidinium (FA) with bismuth (Bi) and metal copper (Cu). We perform density functional theory investigations to calculate the structural, electronic and optical properties of 18 Pb-free compounds, ABiCuX6 [A = Cs2, (MA)2, (FA)2, CsMA, CsFA, MAFA; X = I, Br, Cl] to predict their suitability in photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications. We found that the considered compounds are semiconductors with a tunable band gap characteristics that are suitable for some devices like light emitting diodes. In addition to this, the high dielectric constant, high absorption, high optical conductivity and low reflectivity suggest that the materials have the potential in a wide range of optoelectronic applications including solar cells. Furthermore, we predict that the organic-inorganic hybrid double perovskite (FA)2BiCuI6 is the best candidate in photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications as the material has superior optical and electronic properties.
