Abstract:Mainland Chinese students form the largest international tertiary student population in the USA, yet most discourse around them tends to adopt a deficit perspective. Adopting a hybridized sociocultural framework, this qualitative study follows 18 Chinese undergraduates over one year to examine how challenges they face are influenced by sociocultural contexts and change over time. Findings reveal that Chinese students face challenges around relearning new language skills and communication styles, thinking like a ‘Westerner’, understanding new classroom expectations and sociocultural contexts, and finding balance between work and play. These challenges arise from the different school, societal, and cultural expectations in China versus the USA. Debunking stereotypes that Chinese international students are passive and needy, this study argues that they possess agency as evident in their responses to challenges faced and changes in their attitudes and behaviors over time. Findings aim to increase intercultural understanding between international students and staff and improve college policies that address students’ needs.

Abstract:To date, few studies have focused solely upon understanding the unique characteristics of Chinese international students in the United States. This inquiry examines what Chinese international students’ demographic trends are over decades, what their motivations are for studying in the United States, what the unique features of their group acculturation process are, and what special challenges they face in U.S. universities that are different from what they might face in Chinese universities? This study reveals that the life of Chinese students in the United States is not easy and they have to endure multifaceted life-stresses. These results can be used to help Chinese international students adapt to the American educational environment and improve the services and programs American universities deliver to their foreign students.

Abstract:One unintended consequence of Chinese higher education expansion is an increasing socioeconomic gap in college achievement. Using 2011 College Freshmen Development Survey data, this paper engages in an empirical analysis of the association between one’s socioeconomic status, high school preparation, and college performance. This study finds that well prepared and academically engaged high school graduates achieve a significantly higher level of college development than their less prepared peers. Moreover, low-ses students have a significantly lower level of core competence and civic participation, due to their lack of academic preparation, learning engagement, and parental support in high school. This study provides a critical evidence for the life cycle skill formation argument that the deficit in early human capital investment can impair adolescent and adult attainment.

Abstract:This study focuses on the experiences of two African American and three Chinese American college students studying in China during the 2013–2014 academic year. Data were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. Quantitatively, all five students made progress in their Chinese proficiency, measured by test scores, lexical diversity, and total amount of language produced in each conversation. Qualitatively, the following themes emerged: (a) interactions with Chinese people outside the classroom, (b) how the concept of "self" was viewed by the Chinese people, (c) personality factors, and (d) the language progress. The student who did not enjoy the experience as much as the other students was ethnic Chinese with the highest level of Chinese proficiency. The explanation might be a mismatch between her ideal subject position of a successful language learner and the perceived subject position of a local Chinese person. This study provides additional evidence to show that experience abroad is complex and highly individualized. Even students from the same ethnic groups might have different experiences. Factors such as personality, prior cross-cultural experiences, language proficiency, expectations, and self-identification interact with each other in complex ways to influence the students' experience abroad. Encouraging students to cultivate a more outgoing self in their second language (L2) might help them better take advantage of the study abroad experience.

Abstract:This paper explores the adaptability and resilience of Chinese higher education systems in an era characterized by rapid technological change, economic shifts, and global challenges such as the COVID-19 crisis. Focusing on the perspectives of Chinese students, it examines how they navigate these transformations and their implications for future career planning. Utilizing a qualitative phenomenological approach, the study involved semi-structured interviews with 15 university students, offering insights into their experiences and perceptions. The findings highlight a significant misalignment between the theoretical curriculum offered by Chinese higher education institutions and the practical demands of the job market. Students reported a disconnect between academic achievements and employable skills, underscoring the need for educational reform that integrates practical experience and skill acquisition. The study also reveals the profound influence of cultural expectations on educational attainment and career choices, emphasizing the necessity for a broader cultural shift alongside educational reforms. These insights are critical for re-evaluating the role of higher education in preparing students for a rapidly evolving global economy.

Abstract:China’s higher education system has experienced a profound process of restructuring and transformation from elite to mass higher education in the past decades. College students are struggling with an increasingly disconnected learning experience which is caused by a more competitive learning environment. Under these new circumstances, what is the nature of student engagement in China’s colleges and universities? How do different forms of student engagement affect undergraduates’ success in college? This empirical study examined self-reported data of 18,607 students from 55 Chinese colleges in Beijing through structural equation modeling. The main findings are: student learning experience in college is integrated; different forms of student engagement have a complex mechanism of impacting on each other and consequently directly and indirectly contribute to student gains in college. Findings indicate that institutions in China and other Asian countries need to capture a comprehensive picture of how students change through assessing student overall college experience from a variety of perspectives.

Abstract:This study surveyed college students in China and in the United States to examine student experiences from a comparative approach. The study found that college students in China are more satisfied with their social experiences (interactions with peers and interactions with faculty) and development in interests in ideas and intellectual matters in college. Students in the United States are more satisfied with their academic and intellectual development. This study will contribute to comparative higher education literature and promote interests in global understanding of college student development.

Abstract:The paper investigated four Chinese graduate students’ perceptions of the challenges they face and the coping strategies they use in their English academic learning at two North American universities. They reported experiencing the following seven major challenges in their academic learning: 1) financial difficulties; 2) problems in using English for academic purposes; 3) frustrations in becoming a permanent resident; 4) difficulty in adapting to the classroom learning environment; 5) lack of critical thinking skills; 6) acculturation problems; and 7) loneliness and academic anxiety. For each of the seven challenges they have developed corresponding coping strategies. Cet article examine la perception des défis auxquels devaient faire face quatre étudiants chinois et les stratégies qu’ils employaient pour survivre dans le milieu d’apprentissage académique anglais de deux universités en Amérique du nord. Ils ont éprouvé, disaient-ils dans leurs récits, les sept défis importants suivants: 1) des difficultés financières; 2) des problèmes sur l’usage de l’anglais pour des fins académiques; 3) des frustrations dans leurs applications pour la résidence permanente; 4) des difficultés d’adaptation au milieu d’apprentissage de leurs classes; 5) un manque d'aptitude d’esprit crituque; 6) des problèmes d’acculturation; et 7) la solitude et l'anxiété académique. Pour chacun de ces défis, ils ont développé des stratégies de survie correspondantes.

Abstract:No empirical research has focused solely upon understanding the stress and coping processes of Chinese international students in the United States. This qualitative inquiry examines the individual-level variables that affect the stress-coping process of Chinese international students and how they conceptualize and adapt to their stress at an American university. Results indicate individual variables, such as age, gender, field of study, length of stay, acculturation style, and coping strategies, show significant influences on stress levels among students. These results can be used to help Chinese international students adapt to the American educational environment and improve the services and programs American universities deliver to their foreign students.
A Critical Study of Chinese International Students’ Experiences Pursuing American Higher Education in the Age of Trump and COVID-19

Abstract:My dissertation consists of two study areas, examining Chinese international students’ experiences pursing American higher education in the Age of Trump and COVID-19. Although I address different issues in each area, they have a common theme of better understanding the current generation of Chinese international students against the backdrop of Sino-US tensions, the global pandemic, and anti-Asian racism in the US. Drawing on theories in international education, the first area stresses the role of human agency and demonstrates that Chinese students tend to live and study resiliently amid current heightened uncertainties. The other one focuses on how Chinese international students perceive race and racism in the US. Through semi-structured interviews and follow-up exchanges at the climax of two anti-racist US social movements, the Black Lives Matter and Stop Asian Hate, the findings reveal that Chinese students held contrastive views on race and racism before and after their arrival, due to the disjuncture between ideological indoctrination in the home country and experiential exploration in the host country.
A Comparison of Academic Load and Student Perspectives on Education Between America and China

Abstract:Education is a significant contributor towards shaping the future of our society. However, education systems and academic values in distinct countries such as the United States and China may vary and therefore have different impacts on students living in different parts of the world. This influenced this study in terms of student perspectives on various aspects of their educational experience, which includes academic load at school, tutoring, extracurriculars, and preparedness for future success in college or careers. The results show that overall, middle school and high school students in China have a higher academic load because they have more classes and spend more time at school, doing homework/studying, or receiving tutoring. However, student perspectives on the importance of grades vs. personal qualities are fairly similar between American and Chinese students, with less value on grades and standardized test scores towards future academic success. Because China has a traditionally stricter stance on academic rigor and standardized testing, this insight represents a potential shift in mindset towards education in the modern day. Future research can seek to confirm this in other regions and countries to seek a more accurate and cohesive overview of student perspectives on education.
Cross-cultural adaptation of Chinese students in the United States: Acculturation strategies, sociocultural, psychological, and academic adaptation

Abstract:This study was conducted with the primary purpose to gain a comprehensive understanding of Chinese students’ acculturation by examining the effects of their acculturation strategies, sociocultural, psychological adaptation on the academic adaptation. The total number of 315 international Chinese students studying in the United States participated in an online survey. The mid-point split method was used to classify the four acculturation strategies among Chinese students. The results of a Chi-square test, ANOVA analyses and hierarchical regressions reveal that separation was the most preferred acculturation strategy by the Chinese students while marginalization was the least desirable. Chinese students did the best in sociocultural adaptation but the worst in academic adaptation. However, students who achieved a good sociocultural adaptation encountered unexpected problems with their psychological adaptation. Findings also indicate that international Chinese students’ preference for separation and marginalization was associated with a better psychological and academic adaptation while integration and assimilation strategy was associated with a better sociocultural adaptation. Their academic adaptation can be predicted significantly by their psychological adaptation, not by their sociocultural adaptation.

Abstract:During recent decades, both institutions of higher education and university students of the world are trying to become international by offering or gaining some form of international education, which has caught the attention of increasingly more researchers (Jackson, 2004; Trenchs-Parera, 2009). As East Asian students have increasingly become the majority of international students on university campuses (Xia, 2009), Chinese institutions of higher education have also been recruiting more and more international students. Nevertheless, research on international students in China has been scarce. The present interview study aimed to document the challenges Korean students had while studying full-time in a prestigious university in Beijing. Interviews with 10 senior Korean English majors revealed that they confronted a series of academic, linguistic and cultural challenges while studying in the university. Based on this finding, some implications are discussed.

Abstract:The number of Chinese students studying abroad keeps increasing. A total of 622,100 Chinese students studied at universities abroad in 2018 (Textor 2020). There is growing interest in studying these international students from a variety of perspectives, including the economic benefits to host countries, educational mobility (Cheng 2021), intercultural communication (Yu and Moskal 2019), academic and social adaptation (Gu 2016), and curriculum internationalization (Cheng et al. 2018). The experiences of Chinese students returning "home" have also attracted attention with a focus on identity changes (Wang 2020) and life and work in China (Gill 2010).

Abstract:With the rising number of international students in China, there has been a great need for assessment and evaluation of the acculturation processes as well as challenges in regard to their academic progresses. The cultural gap may not be big between China and other Asian countries. However, it really exists with Non-Asian ones. With the fact that culture determines comfort in one’s life, the following un-answered questions were worthy to be answered in this paper: How do international students acculturate in China? What are the social and academic impacts during the acculturation process? What are the academic effects of failing to acculturate, especially among international students in China? The data shows that, 34% of international students only connect with their own culture. Majority (51%) of those who acculturate successfully, take more than one year to do so. Among the behaviors which were described as bad ones, alcoholism is leading among others, which are adapted by international students in the process of trying to assimilate or acculturate. Positively, 48% of students admitted to have learned time management as part of acculturation process in China. Despite the acculturation process being challenging to some students, scholarship has been one of the factors for them to stay. Scholarship students, especially from economically disadvantaged families choose to stay and achieved their academic goals through scholarship. Notwithstanding, their academic performances among students who fail to acculturate have been relatively low. Several measures such as introduction of intensive orientation programs as well as guidance and counseling office may enable international students understand each other’s culture.

Abstract:Background Acculturation could cause grave health consequences in international students. However, there is a shortage of research into how acculturative stress might affect international students’ quality of life in light of their academic standing and experience. The lack of research is particularly pronounced among Chinese international students, representing the largest body of international students studying in the United States (U.S.). Thus, to bridge the research gap, this study aims to examine the interplay between international students’ acculturative stress, academic standing, and quality of life among a nationally representative sample of Chinese international students studying in the United States. Methods An online survey that gauges Chinese international students’ levels of acculturative stress, academic standing, and quality of life was developed. Over 350 higher education institutions across the United States were approached, including public universities, private universities, and community colleges, among which approximately 220 institutions responded positively and supported survey distribution. A total of 751 students completed the survey. Multiple regression analyses were carried out to examine the associations between students’ acculturative stress, academic standing, and quality of life. Results Findings reveal that acculturative stress negatively affects all four domains of Chinese international students’ quality of life, irrespective of their academic standing. Data analyses also show that compared to master’s and doctoral students, undergraduates experience the highest levels of acculturative stress. Furthermore, a significant difference emerged among undergraduate and doctoral international students’ acculturative stress levels, but not among undergraduate and master’s students, or master’s and doctoral students. Conclusion Our study found that, compared to master’s and doctoral students, undergraduates had more significant acculturative stress associated with lower levels of quality of life. This finding highlights the potentially positive role of academic experience – while acculturative stress deteriorates international students’ quality of life, students’ academic standing and experience could be the protective factor in the equation. Future research could further examine how universities and colleges can capitalize on their academic apparatuses and resources to improve international students’ academic performance and students’ acculturation experience and quality of life.

How cultural values shape Chinese students' online learning experience in American universities

Abstract:Distance education has been regarded as a Western teaching model that emphasizes individual development, learner’s autonomy, active learning, and mutual communications. When Chinese students, who are accustomed to a teacher-led, passive, and reticent way of learning, take online courses in the West, they are likely to encounter a series of disorientations and even difficulties. This doctoral study explores the role of cultural values in shaping Chinese students’ online learning experiences in American universities. Through a qualitative research design, 11 Chinese graduate students from 6 public universities in the Southeastern United States were selected and interviewed about their online learning experiences. The data analysis revealed that Chinese cultural values had a significant impact on their online learning experience and behaviors, and there was a process of cultural negotiation and construction. This book is informative for those teaching online courses to Chinese students, and for researchers interested in cultural studies and distance education.
