Abstract:The subject of the research is the assessment of Investment decision-making efficiency considering the sustainable development requirements. The article aims to identify the relationship between environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance and market returns for investors and the reasons for it. The relevance of the paper is determined by the need to develop research in the field of ESG integration and evaluation of the portfolio investment effectiveness in the context of responsible investment practices popularity. Scientific novelty : the study develops the theory of ESG integration and allows the authors to conclude that ESG commitment is a driver of market profitability for investors. The authors apply methods such as theoretical analysis of scientific publications (analysis, synthesis, generalisation) and quantitative methods, including statistical data analysis, regression analysis, financial modelling. The research base is scientific works of domestic and foreign authors, analytical reports of rating agencies, ESG funds, historical stock market data on companies analysed in the course of this study. All the information used in this study is publicly available or provided by the Bloomberg database. In the course of the study, authors form model portfolios of ESG-oriented and ESG-neutral companies shares and perform a comparative analysis of their fundamental indicators and financial returns. The authors conclude that the portfolio of ESG-oriented companies demonstrates profitability no lower than the portfolio of ESG-neutral companies, considering the risks. At the same time, the values of the fundamental indicators of ESG-oriented companies are inferior to the values of ESG-neutral companies. The relationship between the degree of a company’s ESG compliance and its investment attractiveness is due, among other things, to non-financial value drivers. The authors recommend integrating ESG into the analysis of investment portfolios, significant for the development of investment strategies.

Abstract:Despite the increased interest in socially and environmentally responsible investments, there is a lack of consensus about the effects they exert on companies’ financial performance. The paper examines the reaction of Russian companies’ stock prices to the news about ESG investments made by these companies. The theoretical basis is stakeholder theory suggesting that firms can achieve long-term success solely by protecting the interests of all their stakeholders – not only shareholders, but also employees, local communities, and future generations. To implement the research, we use the event study on a sample of 202 news items about ESG investments of 11 Russian companies topping the ESG-rating by RA-Expert agency. Data were collected from news search engine Factiva and Yahoo!Finance. The data sample include news and stock prices over the period of 2019–2022. According to the research findings, news about Russian companies’ investments in environmental projects, solution of social problems and corporate governance issues do not lead to a rise in stock returns for these companies. Thus, Russian investors do not consider ESG projects and practices as an important decision-making criterion that increases the investment attractiveness of companies.

Abstract:Objective: Nowadays, ESG serves as a guide for any kind of business all around the world. Over the last three years, ESG agenda developed at a more rapid pace on the emerging markets than on the developed ones. Methods: Utilizing data from 200 companies from 8 different industries: chemical, energy, transport, metals and mining, telecommunication, oil and gas, real estate, and retail trade industries, authors employs correlation and regression analyses to ascertain the effects of ESG factors on companies' profitability and investment attractiveness. Results: It can be stated that components of an ESG rating can affect a company’s financial performance, such as profitability and the company’s investment attractiveness with different magnitude and any changes (increase or decrease) in E, S or G components can influence company financial performance: either in positive or negative way. Conclusion: The study concludes that while ESG factors generally contribute to improved financial outcomes, their specific impact varies across different industries, highlighting the importance of industry-specific strategies for integrating ESG considerations into business practices.

Abstract:This study evaluates the differences in environmental, social, and governance factors (ESG) affecting firm value by examining the rating for aggregate ESG and for each factor separately in developed and developing countries. Innovative industry companies as well as heavy industry companies are taken as examples. The paper demonstrates that the effect of ESG rating on the Tobin coefficient, taken as a proxy variable for firm value, differs across industries in developed and developing countries. Based on the observations of 4 207 firms from 35 countries over the period of 2016–2021, the findings demonstrate that the ESG ratings have a positive effect on firm value in developed countries and in innovative industries; the above-mentioned effects are persistent. It also shows that G score is important for the same groups of companies, however, for the firms registered in developing countries, an E score is sufficient in the short term. The paper concludes that lagged variables have a bigger impact on the results in heavy industries that demonstrate their concentration on internal operations, not on investors’ attention directed at the ESG factors. The findings are significant for scholars, managers and policymakers.

Abstract:In the technology-driven economy, a firm’s sustainable financial performance is significantly influenced by its efficiency in research and development (R&D) and broader innovation initiatives. Conversely, while embracing ESG-related activities can potentially open up a broader spectrum of funding, it may also impose challenges on companies as they strive to meet the escalating demands for sus tainability practices and contend with increasing ESG-related risks. Hence, businesses are confronted with the imperative of making prudent ESG-related investments while simultaneously maintaining a strong track record in innovation performance. The findings of numerous studies suggest that investments in ESG projects can yield both positive and negative outcomes for innovation performance. However, recent trends within the ESG industry have amplified concerns regarding the trade-offs between ESG considerations, innovation endeavors, and overall financial performance.

Abstract:In this paper, we empirically investigate the effect of ESG Scores on (1) Cost of equity; (2) Firm’s profitability for a sample of firms operating in the Oil & Gas sector. The obtained results of this study are in line with the literature, supporting the argument that a better Sustainability Performance generates a reduction in the Cost of Equity (Dhaliwal et al., 2014; Matthiesen & Salzmann, 2017; Gupta, 2018). Our findings support arguments in the literature that firms with better ESG performance have higher value and lower risk (El Ghoul et al., 2011, 2018; Chen et al., 2009; Hail & Leuz, 2006), and in the same time highlight some peculiarities deriving from industry-level factors (Reverte, 2012; Gregory et al., 2016)

Abstract:The need to ensure sustainable development of territories has led to the emergence of responsible issuers and investors. At the same time such actors’ impact on the stock indices remains understudied, which makes the studies focused on these issues relevant. The goal of this paper was to see into the impact of investors’ ESG focus on the efficiency and fairness of the stock market. The research draws on 2018-2021 data for 232 Russian firms taken from the ESG Ratingby S&P Global Sustainable and https://smart-lab.ru portal. Indicators of particular companies and the market as a whole were estimated using descriptive statistic methods and Cramer’s V-coefficient, and cluster analysis was done. The results showed that any ESG rated assets have higher dividend yield and stock price to revenues ratio (P/S multiplier), which are statistically significant, but the P/S value can be recognized as optimal both for sustainability-rated assets and the unrated ones. It is concluded that the Russian stock exchange is currently lacking any distributive justice and any responsible investors’commitment has no influence on the market efficiency. The theoretical value of the study lies in its confirming Eugene Fama’s efficient market hypothesis being applicable to responsible issuers’ stocks and in defining the indicators of the market’s distributive justice. Its scholarly importance stems from its assessing the current rate of the Russian stock exchange’s efficiency and fairness when ESG commitments are expanding among investors. The identified failures of the financial market, which managers of responsible companies and shareholders should consider in their activities, are of practical value.

Abstract:This study examines the relationship between environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors and corporate financial performance. Specifically, we study various individual ESG categories, both ESG strengths and concerns, and aggregate ESG factor and their impact on corporate financial performance including profitability and financial risk. We find a positive effect of ESG factors on corporate profitability, and the effect is more pronounced for larger firms. Among different ESG categories, corporate governance has the most significant impact, particularly for firms with weak governance. We also find that ESG variables generally have a positive influence on credit rating. In particular, the social factor has the most significant impact on credit rating, while environmental score surprisingly has a negative effect. Overall, this research provides a rationale for ESG integration in the context of investment management and portfolio construction to maximize value and minimize risk.

Abstract:This study examines the influence of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors on financial performance, focusing on sustainable investment practices. The primary objective is to qualitatively assess how integrating ESG criteria into investment decisions impacts financial returns and risk profiles of companies and investment portfolios. The research employs a qualitative methodology, utilizing case studies, in-depth interviews with investment professionals, and thematic analysis of investment strategies to gain a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between ESG factors and financial performance. The methodology involves analyzing case studies of firms that have adopted ESG principles, conducting interviews with portfolio managers, analysts, and sustainability experts, and reviewing investment performance data over the past decade. The study explores how these firms implement ESG practices and the perceived benefits and challenges of integrating these factors into investment decision-making processes. The thematic analysis identifies recurring patterns and themes related to the impact of ESG integration on financial outcomes. The findings reveal that companies and investment portfolios that prioritize ESG factors tend to experience more stable and sustainable financial performance. The qualitative data suggest that ESG integration can lead to enhanced risk management, improved long-term returns, and increased investor confidence. Case studies demonstrate that firms with robust ESG practices are better equipped to navigate market volatility and capitalize on emerging opportunities, contributing to financial resilience and sustainability.

Abstract:Achieving the sustainable development goals laid down in the national projects of the Russian Federation requires the formation of new strategic guidelines for companies. They can be most succinctly represented by the concept of ESG factors (environmental, social, managerial), which in turn are closely related to the concept of sustainable and responsible investment, which directly addresses financial issues in the light of global risks of climate degradation, ecology, and corporate governance. Revealing the essence, role and place of strategic management based on ESG factors, the authors justify the necessity and possibility of shifting the emphasis of the financial investment market towards responsible investment. The article discusses its main elements, the theory of the relationship of ESG factors with the financial performance of firms, driving the interests of investors, and provides approaches to investment that contribute to sustainable development in various ways.

Abstract:Objective: Main goal of the research is toto assess the level of influence of the ESG rating on the investment attractiveness of companies. The object of the study is the companies for which the ESG rating is calculated (the oil and gas, metallurgical, electric power and banking industries are observed). The hypothesis is that the management dealing with issues related to ESG should take into account the significance of the impact of the ESG rating on the investment attractiveness of companies, if the significance is proven. Method: The methodological part of this research is formed by an econometric estimation of regressions based on panel data models. Results: There were performed econometric assessment of the impact of the ESG rating on the investment attractiveness of companies. The results of econometric modeling are presented in the list of recommendations for ESG managers. In addition, results of the research proves the significance of COVID-19 pandemic impact on the investment attractiveness of the oil and gas companies. Conclusion: The novelty of the results is in the individual econometric estimation of companies’ ESG-rating impact on the investment attractiveness based on the unique set of companies, which present four different industries. Based on the sample of companies from eleven countries, for which ESG scores for the period from 2016 to 2020 were calculated, the statistical significance of ESG-factors, concerning the analysis of its impact on the indicators of investment attractiveness (ROI, EPS), was identified.

Abstract:<p>We propose a theory in which each stock's environmental, social, and governance (ESG) score plays two roles: (1) providing information about firm fundamentals and (2) affecting investor preferences. The solution to the investor's portfolio problem is characterized by an ESG-efficient frontier, showing the highest attainable Sharpe ratio for each ESG level. The corresponding portfolios satisfy four-fund separation. Equilibrium asset prices are determined by an ESG-adjusted capital asset pricing model, showing when ESG raises or lowers the required return. Combining several large data sets, we compute the empirical ESG-efficient frontier and show the costs and benefits of responsible investing. Finally, we test our theory's predictions using proxies for E (carbon emissions), S, G, and overall ESG.</p>

Abstract:This article explores the relationship between ESG (environmental, social and corporate governance) indicators and the financial performance of enterprises. It analyzes data from companies included in the RAEX ESG rating in order to build a linear regression model that demonstrates the dependence of financial indicators, such as return on equity (ROE) and return on assets (ROA), on factors related to sustainable development. The results showed that company performance in the area of sustainability on the E-rating reduces the variability of stock returns and the efficiency of assets use, while increasing return on equity; a rise in the rating on the S indicator leads to an increase in all selected financial indicators of the company; an increase in the G-ranking has a negative effect on stock volatility, but leads to a decrease in return on equity and assets. Components of an ESG rating, especially corporate governance indicators, can both positively and negatively impact company financial performance. The modeling results confirm the existence of a significant relationship between the implementation of sustainable development principles and the financial results of companies, which emphasizes the importance of taking into account ESG factors when assessing the performance of enterprises and making investment decisions. The study provides data for further inquiry into the role of sustainable development in improving the financial performance of enterprises and forming effective management strategies.

Abstract:Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) investments are widely discussed in the stock market. Further, the debate on ESG investment profitability has garnered significant scholarly attention. This study examines the relationship between ESG investments and equity investment return (EIR) and whether this relationship is affected by investors' sophistication. The results suggest that while ESG investors generally gain relatively lower profits than others, sophisticated investors, characterized by greater financial knowledge, diversified investments, contrarian investment strategies, and not being influenced by familiar biases, can mitigate these lower returns. These findings enhance our understanding of ESG investments and offer valuable insights to guide investors in making sophisticated ESG investment decisions.

Abstract:This article is devoted to the impact of ESG on the cost of sources of corporate finance. The topic of the article is relevant, as the world is moving to ESG investing, reflecting a growing sentiment about how ESG considerations can affect portfolios and individual securities. ESG investing is a form of socially responsible investing that prioritizes financial returns as well as a company’s impact on the environment, its stakeholders and the planet. The authors have highlighted in detail the criteria used to assess companies for ESG investing and the various issues covered by these. The article gives a brief history of ESG and how it has evolved over time. It also notes different tools used to help with sustainable investing. And at the end, the authors present an ESG rating and how scores can vary between companies, which may use different measures and weighting systems.

Abstract:In this study, we examine impact of Environment, Social, Governance (ESG) performance on firm value and profitability. Our large dataset gives us the chance to better conceptualize this impact. Our findings suggest that overall ESG combined score is positively and significantly associated with firm value. Individual Social and Governance scores have a positive and significant relationship while Environment score does not have a significant relationship with firm value. On the other hand, ESG combined score, Environment, Social, and Governance scores have positive and significant relationships with firm profitability. These findings suggest that investing in high ESG performance promises financial return for the firm in terms of both value and profitability.

Abstract:This study investigates the relationship between ESG and financial performance and explores the influence of firms' information environment on this relationship. To do this, we construct an information environment index from several proxy measures, evaluate ESG performance using Refinitiv's ESG scores, and evaluate financial performance using return on assets and Tobin's Q. We find that the information environment index has a positive relationship with both return on assets and Tobin's Q ratio. On the contrary, ESG has a negative association with return on assets but a statistically insignificant relationship with Tobin's Q. The negative relationship of ESG with return on assets is convex and weaker in companies with better information environments. We also show that in firms with high asset turnover ratios, ESG does not harm profitability. Separately examining the ESG components reveals that each similarly relates to profitability but that governance has a less negative impact. Our study reveals non-linearities in the relationship between ESG and financial performance that can help companies set better targets and implement better practices about ESG. The moderating effect of the information environment reveals the importance of information dissemination in preventing ESG practices from creating unfavorable consequences. This study may shed light on a more effective ESG policy by showing ways to reduce the adverse financial effects of ESG practices.

Abstract:Over the last two decades, there has been an increased attention to and awareness of corporate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) responsibilities. The asset allocation process has changed accordingly to consider these ESG responsibilities, and it has largely been recognized that private and institutional investors are sensitive to ESG factors when deciding on firms in which to invest. In addition to ESG factors, other key stock-related factors to which investors generally pay attention are risk-adjusted indicators, such as the Sharpe ratio (SR) and the Sortino index (SI), as well as tail risk measures, such as the Value-at-Risk (VaR) and the Expected Shortfall (ES). Overall, the SR, SI, VaR, and ES can provide a guide for investors concerning the risk market performance of a stock under investigation. In this context, the research question that arises is the following: are firms' performances sensitive to ESG rates? The present contribution aims to answer this question. In particular, the SR, SI, VaR, and ES measures of a set of listed firms are calculated and evaluated. Among these, there are firms with low ESG grades and some with high ESG grades according to two ESG rate providers. The list of stocks under consideration consists of the first 25 constituents (by weight) of the S&P500 index in the period from 2020 and 2022. The empirical findings indicate that risk market performance does not properly depend on high or low ESG rates.

Abstract:Long‐term value creation is expected not only to be concerned with maximizing shareholder value but also includes the impact on other stakeholders and the environment. Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues are therefore gaining increasing importance, in line with the growing demand for corporate sustainability. ESG ratings foster the comparison of companies with respect to their sustainable practices. This study aims to investigate how ESG ratings impact financial performance in the European food industry. Ordinary least squares regression is applied to analyze the relation between ESG ratings and financial performance over a 4‐year period from 2017 to 2020. The profitability measures Return on Assets (ROA) and Return on Equity (ROE) are employed as financial performance measures, while ESG ratings are obtained from the database CSRHub. Results show that higher ESG ratings are associated with better financial performance. Although the effect is modest in the present study, the findings support previous results that ESG ratings are positively related to financial performance. Nonetheless, they also highlight that ESG ratings strongly converge to the mean, which depicts the need to reassess whether ESG ratings are able to measure actual ESG behavior.
