Abstract:Pedestrians threading through a crowd is a striking example of coordinated actions. Mutual anticipation between pedestrians is a candidate mechanism underlying such coordination. To examine this possibility, we experimentally intervened pairs of pedestrians performing simple avoidance tasks. Pedestrians in the baseline condition spontaneously coordinated their walking speed and angle until passing one another. Visually distracting one of the pedestrians decreased the level of behavioral coordination. Importantly, blocking the pedestrians' gaze information alone did not alter their walking. These results indicate that spontaneous coordination requires mutual anticipation. Eye movement analysis showed that the direction of a pedestrian's gaze changed depending on the uncertainty of the oncoming pedestrian's motion, and that pedestrians tended to look ahead toward the ultimate passing direction before they actually walked in that direction. We propose that body motion cues may be sufficient and available for implicit negotiation of potential future motions.

Abstract:Human crowds exhibit rich self-organizing behaviors through local interactions. The understanding of interaction mechanisms has important implications for the management of large-scale crowds. Although most vision-based heuristic models are successful, some features such as distracted pedestrians, and empirical phenomena like sudden turns are difficult to be explained. Here, a heuristic interaction model is proposed, which incorporates the extracted laws of pedestrian heterogeneity and mutual anticipation. We argue that pedestrians are heterogeneous in terms of speed and attention (e.g., distracted by cell phones), and have anticipations for other pedestrians’ velocities during the interaction. Numerical simulations indicate that our model realistically simulates the self-organizing phenomenon in the “distraction experiment,” along with related experimental findings. The “freezing-by-heating” phenomenon, as well as interesting phenomena such as “sidewalk shuffling” are successfully predicted, as exhibited in empirical observations. Taken together, our model may serve various potential fields involving the control of traffic flows and navigation of autonomous swarm robots.
Experimental study of the behavioural mechanisms underlying self-organization in human crowds

Abstract:In animal societies as well as in human crowds, many observed collective behaviours result from self-organized processes based on local interactions among individuals. However, models of crowd dynamics are still lacking a systematic individual-level experimental verification, and the local mechanisms underlying the formation of collective patterns are not yet known in detail. We have conducted a set of well-controlled experiments with pedestrians performing simple avoidance tasks in order to determine the laws ruling their behaviour during interactions. The analysis of the large trajectory dataset was used to compute a behavioural map that describes the average change of the direction and speed of a pedestrian for various interaction distances and angles. The experimental results reveal features of the decision process when pedestrians choose the side on which they evade, and show a side preference that is amplified by mutual interactions. The predictions of a binary interaction model based on the above findings were then compared to bidirectional flows of people recorded in a crowded street. Simulations generate two asymmetric lanes with opposite directions of motion, in quantitative agreement with our empirical observations. The knowledge of pedestrian behavioural laws is an important step ahead in the understanding of the underlying dynamics of crowd behaviour and allows for reliable predictions of collective pedestrian movements under natural conditions.

Abstract:Crowd motion represents a ubiquitous phenomenon across various contexts in reality, and has been extensively investigated at different scales. This paper aims to investigate order formation of the crowd driven by collision avoidance, examining the associated motion features. We introduce a parsimonious model incorporating collision avoidance with two characteristic directions, modulated by a ratio parameter p. Anticipation and intrusion aversion are incorporated to facilitate more advanced or sensitive responses to the proximity. The simulations were carried out in the wander and the gathering motion cases (in the absence of or with the specific target). The results reveal the transition from the chaotic state to the ordered state, manifested as the collective motion in the uniform direction or the synchronized rotation. Exploration of the parameter p-space unveils discontinuities in polarization transition, characterized by a sharp increase beyond a threshold p value. Both anticipation and intrusion aversion enhance avoidance behavior, yet the features can differ in the average speed and spatial arrangement within the ordered state. Intriguingly, with large intrusion aversion, the desire to keep larger distances from others may counterintuitively lead to a more uneven spatial distribution, with several individuals in close proximity.
Anticipation Dynamics of Pedestrians Based on the Elliptical Social Force Model.

Abstract:Humans have excellent predictive capabilities, and this anticipation would reflect in the interactions between people. In this work, we utilize the elliptical specification of the social force model (SFM) for pedestrian movements to study how anticipation affects motion dynamics. An elliptical potential determines the interaction between pedestrians not in contact. Anticipation is introduced by shaping the ellipse according to the relative velocity. By adjusting the time to extrapolate, we can control the strength of anticipation. Simulations are conducted in four typical scenarios, i.e., circular motion, crowd gathering, escape through a bottleneck, and free wander. In each case, the qualitative observations from visual animations are followed by quantitative analyses involving different indicators. Simulation results demonstrate that anticipation plays an important role in pedestrian dynamics in several aspects. Briefly, it helps stabilize the movement by reducing perturbations, facilitates a more ordered crowd configuration, and promotes spontaneous collective motion. The findings may set avenues for further research in anticipation dynamics.

The model is able to reproduce the emergence of several empirically observed collective patterns of motion. Abstract:Pedestrian groups are commonly found in crowds but research on their social aspects is comparatively lacking. To fill that void in literature, we study the dynamics of collision avoidance between pedestrian groups (in particular dyads) and individual pedestrians in an ecological environment, focusing in particular on (i) how such avoidance depends on the group's social relation (e.g. colleagues, couples, friends or families) and (ii) its intensity of social interaction (indicated by conversation, gaze exchange, gestures etc). By analyzing relative collision avoidance in the ``center of mass'' frame, we were able to quantify how much groups and individuals avoid each other with respect to the aforementioned properties of the group. A mathematical representation using a potential energy function is proposed to model avoidance and it is shown to provide a fair approximation to the empirical observations. We also studied the probability that the individuals disrupt the group by ``passing through it'' (termed as intrusion). We analyzed the dependence of the parameters of the avoidance model and of the probability of intrusion on groups' social relation and intensity of interaction. We confirmed that the stronger social bonding or interaction intensity is, the more prominent collision avoidance turns out. We also confirmed that the probability of intrusion is a decreasing function of interaction intensity and strength of social bonding. Our results suggest that such variability should be accounted for in models and crowd management in general. Namely, public spaces with strongly bonded groups (e.g. a family-oriented amusement park) may require a different approach compared to public spaces with loosely bonded groups (e.g. a business-oriented trade fair).

Abstract:In human crowds as well as in many animal societies, local interactions among individuals often give rise to self-organized collective organizations that offer functional benefits to the group. For instance, flows of pedestrians moving in opposite directions spontaneously segregate into lanes of uniform walking directions. This phenomenon is often referred to as a smart collective pattern, as it increases the traffic efficiency with no need of external control. However, the functional benefits of this emergent organization have never been experimentally measured, and the underlying behavioral mechanisms are poorly understood. In this work, we have studied this phenomenon under controlled laboratory conditions. We found that the traffic segregation exhibits structural instabilities characterized by the alternation of organized and disorganized states, where the lifetime of well-organized clusters of pedestrians follow a stretched exponential relaxation process. Further analysis show that the inter-pedestrian variability of comfortable walking speeds is a key variable at the origin of the observed traffic perturbations. We show that the collective benefit of the emerging pattern is maximized when all pedestrians walk at the average speed of the group. In practice, however, local interactions between slow- and fast-walking pedestrians trigger global breakdowns of organization, which reduce the collective and the individual payoff provided by the traffic segregation. This work is a step ahead toward the understanding of traffic self-organization in crowds, which turns out to be modulated by complex behavioral mechanisms that do not always maximize the group's benefits. The quantitative understanding of crowd behaviors opens the way for designing bottom-up management strategies bound to promote the emergence of efficient collective behaviors in crowds.

Abstract:Traditional studies on crowd simulation usually regard crowds as the combinations of individuals,but in fact,crowds consist of different small groups of individuals with similar behaviors.Most of the traditional crowd simulation methods ignored this property,and thus,produced unreal results.To overcome this problem,after considering the fact that a crowd consists of different small groups,this paper proposed a novel visually-guided approach containing both collision avoidance and dynamic navigation for simulating crowds.The simulation results show natural-looking self-organized phenomena which are more obvious and appealing in high density or complex situations compared with existing classical models.
Effects of Crowding Perception on Self-organized Pedestrian Flows Using Adaptive Agent-based Model

Abstract:Pedestrian behavior has much more complicated characteristics in a dense crowd and thus attracts the widespread interest of scientists and engineers. However, even successful modeling approaches such as pedestrian models based on particle systems are still not fully considered the perceptive mechanism underlying collective pedestrian behavior. This paper extends a behavioral heuristics-based pedestrian model to an adaptive agent-based model, which explicitly considers the crowding effect of neighboring individuals and perception anisotropy on the representation of a pedestrians visual information. The adaptive agents with crowding perception are constructed to investigate complex, selforganized collective dynamics of pedestrian motion. The proposed model simulates selforganized pedestrian flows in good quantitative agreement with empirical data. The selforganized phenomena include lane formation in bidirectional flow and fundamental diagrams of unidirectional flow. Simulation results show that the emergence of lane formation in bidirectional flow can be well reproduced. To investigate this further, increasing view distance has a significant effect on reducing the number of lanes, increasing lane width, and stabilizing the self-organized lanes. The paper also discusses phase transitions of fundamental diagrams of pedestrian crowds with unidirectional flow. It is found that the heterogeneity of how pedestrians perceive crowding in the population has a remarkable impact on the flow quality, which results in the buildup of congestion and rapidly decreases the efficiency of pedestrian flows. It also indicates that the concept of heterogeneity may be used to explain the instability of phase transitions.

How simple rules determine pedestrian behavior and crowd disasters

Abstract:With the increasing size and frequency of mass events, the study of crowd disasters and the simulation of pedestrian flows have become important research areas. Yet, even successful modeling approaches such as those inspired by Newtonian force models are still not fully consistent with empirical observations and are sometimes hard to calibrate. Here, a novel cognitive science approach is proposed, which is based on behavioral heuristics. We suggest that, guided by visual information, namely the distance of obstructions in candidate lines of sight, pedestrians apply two simple cognitive procedures to adapt their walking speeds and directions. While simpler than previous approaches, this model predicts individual trajectories and collective patterns of motion in good quantitative agreement with a large variety of empirical and experimental data. This includes the emergence of self-organization phenomena, such as the spontaneous formation of unidirectional lanes or stop-and-go waves. Moreover, the combination of pedestrian heuristics with body collisions generates crowd turbulence at extreme densities-a phenomenon that has been observed during recent crowd disasters. By proposing an integrated treatment of simultaneous interactions between multiple individuals, our approach overcomes limitations of current physics-inspired pair interaction models. Understanding crowd dynamics through cognitive heuristics is therefore not only crucial for a better preparation of safe mass events. It also clears the way for a more realistic modeling of collective social behaviors, in particular of human crowds and biological swarms. Furthermore, our behavioral heuristics may serve to improve the navigation of autonomous robots.

Abstract:To better design safe and comfortable urban spaces, understanding the nature of human crowd movement is important. However, precise interactions among pedestrians are difficult to measure in the presence of their complex decision-making processes and many related factors. While extensive studies on pedestrian flow through bottlenecks and corridors have been conducted, the dominant mode of interaction in these scenarios may not be relevant in different scenarios. Here, we attempt to decipher the factors that affect human reactions to other individuals from a different perspective. We conducted experiments employing the inflow process in which pedestrians successively enter a confined area (like an elevator) and look for a temporary position. In this process, pedestrians have a wider range of options regarding their motion than in the classical scenarios; therefore, other factors might become relevant. The preference of location is visualized by pedestrian density profiles obtained from recorded pedestrian trajectories. Non-trivial patterns of space acquisition, e.g., an apparent preference for positions near corners, were observed. This indicates the relevance of psychological and anticipative factors beyond the private sphere, which have not been deeply discussed so far in the literature on pedestrian dynamics. From the results, four major factors, which we call flow avoidance, distance cost, angle cost, and boundary preference, were suggested. We confirmed that a description of decision-making based on these factors can give a rise to realistic preference patterns, using a simple mathematical model. Our findings provide new perspectives and a baseline for considering the optimization of design and safety in crowded public areas and public transport carriers.

Abstract:Anticipation is a fundamental capacity found in many living organisms, particularly in humans. In this study, we investigate the influence of anticipation on collective behavior based on a self-propelled model that relies on solely attractive interaction forces. Focal particles employ anticipation to predict the future positions of neighboring particles, foreseeing their locations τ time steps ahead by utilizing linear extrapolation based on adjacent time step positions. The results demonstrate that our model can attain velocity alignment from random initial states. Theoretical derivations further reveal that as both τ and the interaction amplitude among particles increase, the translation velocity of the swarm accelerates. Notably, under certain parameters, noise above a certain value can drive swarm from misaligned to the velocity alignment state. These insights have been validated through both particle simulations and experiments employing swarm robots. Our work reveals the significant role of anticipation in collective behavior and provides a novel approach for achieving velocity alignment in swarm.

Abstract:Understanding and modeling pedestrian dynamics in dense crowds is a complex yet essential aspect of crowd management and urban planning. In this work, we investigate the dynamics of a dense crowd crossed by a cylindrical intruder using a Mean-Field Game (MFG) model. By incorporating a discount factor to account for pedestrians' limited anticipation and information processing, we examine the model's ability to simulate two distinct experimental configurations: pedestrians facing the obstacle and pedestrians giving their back to the intruder. Through a comprehensive comparison with experimental data, we demonstrate that the MFG model effectively captures essential crowd behaviors, including anticipatory motion and collision avoidance.

This issue is addressed in this paper by a model which combines, in a time and space-dependent way, discrete and continuous effects of pedestrian interactions. Numerical simulations and qualitative analysis suggest that human perception, and its impact on crowd dynamics, can be effectively modelled as a multiscale process based on a dual microscopic/macroscopic representation of groups of agents.

A Dual Adaptive Cellular Automaton Model Based on a Composite Field and Pedestrian Heterogeneity

Abstract:To better reveal the law of pedestrian flow and the mechanism of crowd accidents, this paper establishes a dual adaptive cellular automaton model (DACA) that integrates pedestrian heterogeneity, local density, target distance and asynchronous behaviour. The validity of the model is verified, and when the crowd density is greater than 3 persons/m2, the free movement of pedestrians is generally constrained by crowd density. In contrast, the critical density that affects the velocity of pedestrian movement is positively correlated with the complete free movement velocity (CFMV) of pedestrians. The steady-state density of the straight channel is negatively correlated with CFMV. A negative correlation between CFMV and the average crowd density at maximum flow is observed, and the time from highest density to steady density is independent of CFMV, but when the density is not the limit, the crowd dredging time is related to CFMV and the initial density of congestion. Finally, a case study of the start-up characteristics of a static crowd in a straight channel shows that the transmission speed of the start information under the limit density is greater than the moving speed of the crowd. The self-dredging process of crowds consumes additional time. The crowd distribution is sparse in the front and dense in the tail, and the crowd gathering risk is found to be directly proportional to the initial crowd density at the acceptable risk level. This study can effectively explore the laws of crowd movement and provide a theoretical reference for crowd safety management.

Abstract:In crowd dynamic, relations are existed among some pedestrians, which cause frequent interactions during evacuation, creating collective motion phenomena, such as the most common pattern of team-groups. Besides, collective behavior can make a beneficial effect on the evacuation process. Therefore, this paper proposes a collective motion model to simulate bi-direction pedestrian flow. First, a method of group vision sharing is proposed to help pedestrians learn the crowd around. Based on two-layer relationship mechanism proposed, aggregate force and collective collision avoidance force are added into the original social force formula. The aggregate force is the resultant of two forces, one is the attraction among the leader and team members, and the other one is that among members of groups due to the social relations. Simulation results show that the modified model can reproduce the team-groups collective pattern in real world bi-direction pedestrian flow, and can reduce the collision risk with regarding the group as collision avoidance unit. Furthermore, the evacuation efficiency is improved.

Abstract:Anticipating others' actions is innate and essential in order for humans to navigate and interact well with others in dense crowds. This ability is urgently required for unmanned systems such as service robots and self-driving cars. However, existing solutions struggle to predict pedestrian anticipation accurately, because the influence of group-related social behaviors has not been well considered. While group relationships and group interactions are ubiquitous and significantly influence pedestrian anticipation, their influence is diverse and subtle, making it difficult to explicitly quantify. Here, we propose the group interaction field (GIF), a novel group-aware representation that quantifies pedestrian anticipation into a probability field of pedestrians' future locations and attention orientations. An end-to-end neural network, GIFNet, is tailored to estimate the GIF from explicit multidimensional observations. GIFNet quantifies the influence of group behaviors by formulating a group interaction graph with propagation and graph attention that is adaptive to the group size and dynamic interaction states. The experimental results show that the GIF effectively represents the change in pedestrians' anticipation under the prominent impact of group behaviors and accurately predicts pedestrians' future states. Moreover, the GIF contributes to explaining various predictions of pedestrians' behavior in different social states. The proposed GIF will eventually be able to allow unmanned systems to work in a human-like manner and comply with social norms, thereby promoting harmonious human–machine relationships.

We use a novel collision avoidance model considering the asymmetrical shape of the human body, and combine it to a mathematical model of group behaviour. The presence of groups results to have a significant effect on velocity and lane organisation, and a dramatic one on collision. Despite the limitations of our approach, we believe that our results show the great theoretical and practical relevance of group behaviour in pedestrian models, and suggest that realistic results may hardly be achieved simply by adding together modular models.

Abstract:Nonreciprocal interaction crowd systems, such as human-human, human-vehicle, and human-robot systems, often have serious impacts on pedestrian safety and social order. A more comprehensive understanding of these systems is needed to optimize system stability and efficiency. Despite the importance of these interactions, empirical research in this area remains limited. Thus, in our study we explore this underresearched area, focusing on scenarios where nonreciprocity plays a critical role, such as mass stabbings, which pose a substantial risk to public safety. We conducted the first experiments on this system and analysed high-accuracy data obtained from these experiments. The extent of the direct threat zone is determined by the speed of the moving threat and the radius of danger occurrence. We further categorize potential threats into direct, adjacent, and rear-view zones, quantifying the level of threat for pedestrians. Our study revealed that a pedestrian's desired velocity correlated positively with potential threat intensity, increasing until near the direct threat zone. An emerging steady state is observed when escape routes are blocked by moving threats. This deviation affects the density-velocity relationship, making it distinct from the general relationship. This deviation signifies unique pedestrian behaviour in the presence of moving threats. Additionally, the rate of change in the angle for pedestrian motion in various desired directions is synchronized. This indicates the emergence of collective intelligence in nonreciprocal interaction crowd systems. As a result, our study may constitute a pioneering step towards understanding nonreciprocal interactions in crowd systems through laboratory experiments. These findings may enhance pedestrian safety and inform not only government crowd management strategies but also individual self-protection measures.
