Abstract:Procedures relying on infinitesimals in Leibniz, Euler and Cauchy have been interpreted in both a Weierstrassian and Robinson's frameworks. The latter provides closer proxies for the procedures of the classical masters. Thus, Leibniz's distinction between assignable and inassignable numbers finds a proxy in the distinction between standard and nonstandard numbers in Robinson's framework, while Leibniz's law of homogeneity with the implied notion of equality up to negligible terms finds a mathematical formalisation in terms of standard part. It is hard to provide parallel formalisations in a Weierstrassian framework but scholars since Ishiguro have engaged in a quest for ghosts of departed quantifiers to provide a Weierstrassian account for Leibniz's infinitesimals. Euler similarly had notions of equality up to negligible terms, of which he distinguished two types: geometric and arithmetic. Euler routinely used product decompositions into a specific infinite number of factors, and used the binomial formula with an infinite exponent. Such procedures have immediate hyperfinite analogues in Robinson's framework, while in a Weierstrassian framework they can only be reinterpreted by means of paraphrases departing significantly from Euler's own presentation. Cauchy gives lucid definitions of continuity in terms of infinitesimals that find ready formalisations in Robinson's framework but scholars working in a Weierstrassian framework bend over backwards either to claim that Cauchy was vague or to engage in a quest for ghosts of departed quantifiers in his work. Cauchy's procedures in the context of his 1853 sum theorem (for series of continuous functions) are more readily understood from the viewpoint of Robinson's framework, where one can exploit tools such as the pointwise definition of the concept of uniform convergence. Abstract:A very small amount of K\"ahler algebra (i.e. Clifford algebra of differential forms) in the real plane makes x + ydxdy emerge as a factor between the differentials of the Cartesian and polar coordinates, largely replacing the concept of complex variable. The integration on closed curves of closed 1-forms on multiply connected regions takes us directly to a real plane version of the theorem of residues. One need not resort to anything like differentiation and integration with respect to x + ydxdy. It is a matter of algebra and integration of periodic functions. We then derive Cauchy's integral formulas, including the ones for the derivatives. Additional complex variable theory of general interest for phyicists is then trivial. The approach is consistent with the Weierstrass point of view: power series expansions, even if explicit expressions are not needed. By design, this approach cannot replace integrations that yield complex results. These can be obtained with an approach based on the Cauchy point of view, where the Cauchy-Riemann conditions come first and the theorem of residues comes last.

Abstract:We consider a uniqueness problem concerning the Fourier coefficients of normalized Cauchy transforms. These problems inherently involve proving a simultaneous approximation phenomenon and establishing the existence of cyclic inner functions in certain sequence spaces. Our results have several applications in different directions. First, we offer a new non-probabilistic proof of a classic theorem by Kahane and Katzenelson on simultaneous approximation. Secondly, we demonstrate the absence of uniform admissible majorants of Fourier coefficients in de Branges-Rovnyak spaces.

Abstract:We consider the problem of solving a linear system of equations which involves complex variables and their conjugates. We characterize when it reduces to a complex linear system, that is, a system involving only complex variables (and not their conjugates). In that case, we show how to construct the complex linear system. Interestingly, this provides a new insight on the relationship between real and complex linear systems. In particular, any real symmetric linear system of equations can be solved via a complex linear system of equations. Numerical illustrations are provided. The mathematics in this manuscript constitute an exciting interplay between Schur's complement, Cholesky's factorization, and Cauchy's interlace theorem.

Abstract:In this short note we report on a coincidence of two mathematical quantities that, at first glance, have little to do with each other. On the one hand, there are the Lebesgue constants of the Walsh function system that play an important role in approximation theory, and on the other hand there is the star discrepancy of the van der Corput sequence that plays a prominent role in uniform distribution theory. Over the decades, these two quantities have been examined in great detail independently of each other and important results have been proven. Work in these areas has been carried out independently, but as we show here, they actually coincide. Interestingly, many theorems have been discovered in both areas independently, but some results have only been known in one area but not in the other.

Abstract:We prove that a Poisson-Newton formula, in a broad sense, is associated to each Dirichlet series with a meromorphic extension to the whole complex plane. These formulas simultaneously generalize the classical Poisson formula and Newton formulas for Newton sums. Classical Poisson formulas in Fourier analysis, classical summation formulas as Euler-McLaurin or Abel-Plana formulas, explicit formulas in number theory and Selberg trace formulas in Riemannian geometry appear as special cases of our general Poisson-Newton formula. We also associate to finite order meromorphic functions general Poisson-Newton formulas that yield many classical integral formulas.

Abstract:We re-evaluate the great Leibniz-Newton calculus debate, exactly three hundred years after it culminated, in 1712. We reflect upon the concept of invention, and to what extent there were indeed two independent inventors of this new mathematical method. We are to a considerable extent agreeing with the mathematics historians Tom Whiteside in the 20th century and Augustus de Morgan in the 19th. By way of introduction we recall two apposite quotations: "After two and a half centuries the Newton-Leibniz disputes continue to inflame the passions. Only the very learned (or the very foolish) dare to enter this great killing ground of the history of ideas" from Stephen Shapin and "When de l'Hopital, in 1696, published at Paris a treatise so systematic, and so much resembling one of modern times, that it might be used even now, he could find nothing English to quote, except a slight treatise of Craig on quadratures, published in 1693" from Augustus de Morgan.
On the convergence of Newton series and the asymptotics of finite differences

Abstract:Suppose a complex function $f$ has a Lebesgue measurable inverse Laplace transform. We show that the $n$th order forward and backward differences of $f$ at $z_0\in\mathbb{C}$ tend to zero as $n\to\infty$ whenever $z_0$ lies in the region of absolute convergence of $f$. Under the same hypothesis, we show that the Newton series of $f$ centered at $z_0$ exists and converges in the half-plane $\Re(z)>\Re(z_0)$. Assuming instead that $f$ has a Lebesgue measurable inverse Fourier transform, we show that the $n$th order forward, backward, and central differences of $f$ at any $y\in\mathbb{R}$ are $o(2^n)$. Consequently, we show that the binomial sum $\sum_{k\geq0}{n\choose k}f(k)$ is $o(2^n)$.

Abstract:Complex function is a function that takes complex numbers as independent and dependent variables. The theory of complex functions originated in the eighteenth century, and in nineteenth century, the new branch of complex functions dominated mathematics. The theory about complex function is called complex analysis, which is very helpful in many branches of mathematics, including algebraic geometry, number theory, analytic combinatorics, applied mathematics as well as Physics, including the branches of hydrodynamics, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, and twistor theory. This paper is going to introduce an important theorem in complex analysis, and it is the residue theorem. The residue theorem can convert some integrals into integrals with complex variables, which can be solved by using Taylor series and it’s an easier method. With the explanation of those examples, the applications of using the theorem to solve functions are clearly shown. This paper is introducing several effective methods of how the residue theorem can be used in practical issues by solving integrals.
A historical analysis of the independent development of calculus by Newton and Leibniz

Abstract:This paper undertakes a historical investigation of the separate and independent development of calculus by Isaac Newton and Gottfried Leibniz in the late 17th century. Through analysis of primary sources and historiographical perspectives, it explores the differences in notation, methods, and applications used by each mathematician to formulate foundational concepts of calculus. The research demonstrates that Newton relied more on geometric intuition, developing calculus concepts like fluxions and fluents rooted in kinematic problems. His 1687 Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica synthesized many calculus innovations. Meanwhile, Leibniz approached calculus from an algebraic mindset, utilizing infinitesimal differentials and comprehensively explaining integral and differential calculus in publications like Nova Methodus pro Maximis et Minimis. Evaluation of letters and documents from the 1670s and 1680s shows no direct collaboration or communication about calculus between Newton and Leibniz. This lack of transmission, coupled with the disparities in their notation and calculus techniques, provides evidence for independent creation. However, Newton and Leibniz shared key insights regarding rates of change, derivatives and integrals, hinting at a broader zeitgeist in early modern mathematics and science. Thus, this dual achievement illustrates how the Scientific Revolution facilitated conceptual convergence despite geographic separation between great thinkers. Investigating this case study offers perspective on the interplay between individual genius and wider social contexts in driving scientific progress. This paper concludes by assessing the legacy of the Newton-Leibniz debate over priority and analyzing work that paved the way for modern unified calculus notation and applications.
Abel-Ruffini's Theorem: Complex but Not Complicated!

Abstract:In this article, using only elementary knowledge of complex numbers, we sketch a proof of the celebrated Abel--Ruffini theorem, which states that the general solution to an algebraic equation of degree five or more cannot be written using radicals, that is, using its coefficients and arithmetic operations $+,-,\times,÷,$ and $\sqrt{\ }$. The present article is written purposely with concise and pedagogical terms and dedicated to students and researchers not familiar with Galois theory, or even group theory in general, which are the usual tools used to prove this remarkable theorem. In particular, the proof is self-contained and gives some insight as to why formulae exist for equations of degree four or less (and how they are constructed), and why they do not for degree five or more.

Abstract:We give a complete expansion, at any accuracy order, for the iterated convolution of a complex valued integrable sequence in one space dimension. The remainders are estimated sharply with generalized Gaussian bounds. The result applies in probability theory for random walks as well as in numerical analysis for studying the large time behavior of numerical schemes.

Abstract:The Capelli identities claim $det(A)det(B) = det(AB+correction)$ for certain matrices with noncommutative entries. They have applications in representation theory and integrable systems. We propose new examples of these identities, constructed according to the following principle. For several known identities for $n$ by $n$ matrices we construct new identity for $2n$ by $2n$ matrices where each element $z$ of the original matrix is substituted by 2x2 matrix of the form $[real(z) ~imag(z); ~ -imag(z) ~ real(z)]$, i.e. we view the original identity as complex valued, while the new identity is its real form (decomplexification). It appears that "decomplexification" affects non-trivially the "correction term". It becomes tridiagonal matrix, in contrast to the diagonal in the classical case. The key result is an extension to the non-commutative setting of the fact that the determinant of the decomplexified matrix is equal to the square module of the determinant of the original matrix (in non-commutative setting the corrections are necessary). The decomplexified Capelli's identities are corollaries of this fact and standard Capelli identities. We also discuss analogs of the Cayley identity; observe that the Capelli determinant coincides with the Duflo image of the standard determinant; give short proof of the Cayley identity via Harish-Chandra's radial part calculation. The main motivation for us is a recent paper by An Huang (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1102.2657" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1102.2657">arXiv:1102.2657</a>). From our viewpoint his result is a "dequaternionification" of 1 by 1 Capelli identity. Apparently it can be extended to $n$ by $n$ case, but our approach should be somehow modified for this. The paper aims to be accessible and interesting not only for experts. It gives brief review of Capelli identities, applications, their relation with Wick quantization, Duflo map, some open issues, etc.

Abstract:We relate Fubini's theorem for Euler characteristics to Riemann-Hurwtiz formulae, and reprove a classical result of Iversen. The techniques used include algebraic geometry, complex geometry, and model theory. Possible applications to the study of wild ramification in finite characteristic are discussed.

Abstract:We present some similarities between Leibnizian and Robinsonian calculi, and address some objections raised by historians. The comparison with NSA facilitates our appreciation of some Leibnizian procedures that may otherwise seem obscure. We argue that Leibniz used genuine infinitesimals and infinite quantities which are not merely stenography for Archimedean Exhaustion and that Leibniz's procedures therefore find better proxies in NSA than in modern Weierstrassian mathematics.

Abstract:Like his colleagues de Prony, Petit, and Poisson at the Ecole Polytechnique, Cauchy used infinitesimals in the Leibniz-Euler tradition both in his research and teaching. Cauchy applied infinitesimals in an 1826 work in differential geometry where infinitesimals are used neither as variable quantities nor as sequences but rather as numbers. He also applied infinitesimals in an 1832 article on integral geometry, similarly as numbers. We explore these and other applications of Cauchy's infinitesimals as used in his textbooks and research articles. An attentive reading of Cauchy's work challenges received views on Cauchy's role in the history of analysis and geometry. We demonstrate the viability of Cauchy's infinitesimal techniques in fields as diverse as geometric probability, differential geometry, elasticity, Dirac delta functions, continuity and convergence. Abstract:We find an interesting relationship between the golden ratio, the Moebius function, the Euler totient function and the natural logarithm - central players in the theory of numbers. A number of identities involving the golden ratio and its reciprocal are proved, including an expression for the base of the natural logarithm. The theorem and corollaries highlight a connection between the golden ratio and the factorization of integers that is not obvious; and display a sort of inverse relationship between the Moebius function and Euler totient function.

Abstract:This article deals with three types of mutually inverse series relating Ferrers and associated Legendre functions of arbitrary complex indexes and orders established on the base of integral representations by using a number of generating functions (some of them are novel) for polynomials expressed in terms of hypergeometric or generalized hypergeometric polynomials. High-order asymptotics of above-mentioned polynomials are indicated. In particular, as n → ∞ , a uniform asymptotics for Gegenbauer polynomials C n λ − n ( x ) , λ ∈ C , is obtained. In special cases, the inverse series turn into novel mutually inverse finite sums relating Gegenbauer or associated Legendre polynomials of different arguments as well as into novel connection formulas for Gegenbauer and associated Legendre polynomials.
