Abstract:Despite the long history in commercial lithium-ion batteries, layered lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2) suffers from structural degradations that shorten the cycle life when operating at high voltages (i.e., 4.5 V vs Li/Li+) in nonaqueous electrolytes or even at moderate voltages in aqueous electrolytes. This limited performance originates from the O3-to-O1 phase transition involving cobalt dissolution or the leaching of Li2O. Here, we report a one-pot synthesis that yields LiCoO2 bearing a spinel-Co3O4 surface structure with a thickness of 2 nm via lithium-deficient stoichiometry (Li:Co = 0.98:1). The lithium-deficiency induces the spinel structure, a thermodynamically preferred phase at the given stoichiometry, by temperature-specific phase separation. The spinel surface layer mitigates cobalt dissolution and oxygen gas evolution or avoids direct contact with the electrolyte causing the leaching of Li2O, improving the cyclability in nonaqueous and aqueous electrolytes by 35% and 20% after 100 cycles compared to that of LiCoO2 when the upper cutoff voltages were imposed at 4.5 V (vs Li/Li+) and 0.8 V (vs Ag/AgCl), respectively.

Abstract:Lithium cobalt oxide, LiCoO2, has been the most widely used cathode material in commercial lithium ion batteries. Nevertheless, cobalt has economic and environmen- tal problems that leave the door open to exploit alternative cathode materials, among which LiNixCoyMn1−x−yO2 may have improved performances, such as thermal stability, due to the synergistic effect of the three ions. Recently, intensive effort has been directed towards the development of LiNixCoyMn1−x−yO2 as a possible replacement for LiCoO2. Recent advances in layered LiNixCoyMn1−x−yO2 cathode materials are summarized in this paper. The preparation and the performance are reviewed, and the future promising cathode materials are also prospected.

Abstract:The elimination of Co from Ni-rich layered cathodes is considered a priority to reduce their material cost and for sustainable development of Li-ion batteries (LIBs) as Co is becoming increasingly scarce. The introduction of 1 mol% Mo into Li(Ni 0.9 Mn 0.1 )O 2 delivers 234 mAh g −1 at 4.4 V. The cycling stability of a full cell featuring the Li(Ni 0.89 Mn 0.1 Mo 0.01 )O 2 (Mo–NM90) cathode is enhanced with a modified electrolyte; retaining 86% of its initial capacity after 1,000 cycles while providing 880 Wh kg cathode −1 . The grain size refinement achieved by Mo doping dissipates the deleterious strain from abrupt lattice contraction through fracture toughening and the removal of local compositional inhomogeneities. Enhanced cation ordering induced by the presence of Mo 6+ also stabilizes the delithiated structure through a pillar effect. The Mo–NM90 cathode is able to deliver a high capacity with cycling stability suitable for the long service life for electric vehicles at a reduced material cost, furthering the realization of a commercially viable Co-free cathode for LIBs.

Abstract:Li and Mn rich (LMR) layered oxides, written as xLi2MnO3·(1 − x)LiMO2 (M = Mn, Ni, Co, Fe, etc.), have been widely reported in recent years due to their high capacity and high energy density. The stable structure and superior performance of LMR oxides make them one of the most promising candidates for the next-generation cathode materials. However, the commercialization of these materials is hindered by several drawbacks, such as low initial Coulombic efficiency, the degradation of voltage and capacity during cycling, and poor rate performance. This review summarizes research progress in solving these concerns of LMR cathodes over the past decade by following three classes of strategies: morphology design, bulk design, and surface modification. We elaborate on the processing procedures, electrochemical performance, mechanisms, and limitations of each approach, and finally put forward the concerns left and the possible solutions for the commercialization of LMR cathodes.

Abstract:Development and discovery of cathode materials with superior performance seem to be tremendous challenges for Li-ion battery scientists. Since the topotactic reaction was first demonstrated in the 1970s, layered Li transition metal oxides (LiMO2, M = Co, Ni, Mn) have been a shining star throughout the research and innovation in intercalation materials due to their appealing merits. Generally the basic LiMO2 with a single kind of transition metal ion suffers from safety concerns and structural instability and can not support high energy Li-ion batteries. Nowadays, Li-stoichiometric mixed metal oxides and Li-excess Mn-based oxides have been considered as the most promising families of cathode materials for large-scale Li-ion batteries with high energy density used for transportation. In the present paper, with the help of a phase diagram tetrahedron, we provide an overview of the major developments in the field of LiMO2 cathode materials. The changes in structure during Li extraction and the phase compatibility of Li mixed metal oxides are highlighted. The latest progress in the research of Li-excess Mn-based oxides is also included.
Lithium-Rich Layered Oxides as Cathode Materials : Structures, Capacity Origin Mechanisms and Modifications

Abstract:The lithium-ion battery has mitigated the reliance on fossil fuels and alleviated the increasing pressure on environment as a new form of energy storage. Compared with other conventional cathodes, lithium-rich layered oxide is considered to be one of the most potential candidates for the next generation cathode materials due to its low cost and higher reversible capacity, which is a promising application especially in the fields of electric vehicles and large-scale energy storage grids. In this review, we start from the point of the structures of lithium-rich layered oxides then mainly focus on the differences of lattice configuration between a solid solution structure and a "composite" structure. Various characterization methods which are used to identify these differences are introduced as well. The origins of the 4. 5 V plateau and several representative mechanisms proposed in recent years are summarized. From different perspective, these mechanisms explain the origin of the abnormal capacity of lithium-rich layered oxides when they are charged-discharged at the first cycle. According to the current research, the validity of these mechanisms is elaborated. Meanwhile, some major problems which hinder the further development of lithium-rich layered oxides, including irreversible capacity loss at first cycle, cycle performance, rate capability, are introduced. At the same time, the effects generated by the surface spinel phase and several typical modification methods are elaborated. Finally, the future development and the prospects of lithium-rich layered oxides as cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries are also proposed.

Abstract:The prosperity of the electric vehicle industry is driving the research and development of lithium-ion batteries. As one of the core components in the entire battery system, cathode materials are currently facing major challenges in pushing a higher capacity up to the materials' theoretical limits and transitioning away from unaffordable metals. The search for next-generation cathode materials has shifted to high-nickel and cobalt-free cathodes to meet these requirements. In this review, we distinctly point out the shortcomings of cobalt in stabilizing layered structures and systematically summarize the recent efforts to eliminate cobalt and achieve higher nickel content in layered cathode materials. Finally, a reasonable prospect is put forward for further development of layered cathode materials and other promising candidates, which is likely to spur a wave of efforts toward developing high-performance and low-cost Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:The Li-ion battery represents one of the most important and most technically challenging components of electric vehicles. The cathode is one of the three key components (i.e., cathode, anode, and electrolyte) of the Li-ion battery and determines the battery quality. The demand for higher energy density, lower cost, and environmentally friendly batteries makes Li-rich layered oxides xLi(2)MnO(3)center dot(1 - x)LiMO2 (LR-NMC) among the most attractive candidates for future cathode materials. In this review, we discuss the state-of-the-art research activities related to LR-NMC materials, including their structures, mechanisms of high capacity and large voltage, challenges, and strategies that have been studied to improve their performances. Finally, we conclude with some personal perspectives for the future development of LR-NMC materials.
Cobalt-Free Oxide Cathode Material with Phase Composition Control to High Electrochemical Performance in Li-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Cobalt-free layered oxide cathode material (LiMn0.5Ni0.5O2) was obtained via a two-step synthesis method. First, hydrothermal synthesis of MnOOH with nanorod morphology was achieved and then a co-precipitation process to obtain the LiMn0.5Ni0.5O2 active layered material was performed. Structural and morphological characterization revealed a promising disordered layered structure obtained at 800°C with improved electrochemical performance. The thermal treatment performed on the active materials resulted in a controlled balance between the monoclinic and rhombohedral phase leading to good phases formation ratio in a cobalt-free layer cathode. It was found that the controlled mixing of structural phases plays an important role in improving the electrochemical performance of the active cathodic layer material, resulting in an adequate balance between high discharge capacity and electrochemical stability during the charge/discharge cycling. The morphological analysis showed two kinds of particles that played an important role in the structural stability and electrochemical performance. The active material thermally treated at 800°C displayed outstanding discharge capacity of 235.05 mAh g-1 at 20 mA g-1 in current constant-constant voltage) mode. While, in current constant mode showed the highest discharge capacity, of 178.95 mAh g-1 at 20 mA g-1 and good capacity retention (87.2% after 100 cycles).

Abstract:Layered structural lithium metal oxides with rhombohedral α-NaFeO2 crystal structure have been proven to be particularly suitable for application as cathode materials in lithium-ion batteries. Compared with LiCoO2, lithium nickel manganese oxides are promising, inexpensive, nontoxic, and have high thermal stability; thus, they are extensively studied as alternative cathode electrode materials to the commercial LiCoO2 electrode. However, a lot of work needs to be done to reduce cost and extend the effective lifetime. In this paper, the development of the layered lithium nickel manganese oxide cathode materials is reviewed from synthesis method, coating, doping to modification, lithium-rich materials, nanostructured materials, and so on, which can make electrochemical performance better. The prospects of lithium nickel manganese oxides as cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries are also looked forward to.

Abstract:Lithium-rich transition metal oxides are attractive cathode materials providing high energy densities for lithium-ion batteries. A layer-structured Li2RuO3-LiCoO2 composite was synthesized by the solid-state reaction method. In the as-prepared composite, Li2RuO3 component not only serves as the electrochemical active phase providing large reversible capacity, but also improves the structural stability of layered LiCoO2 at high potential. Electrochemical measurements show the composite has high reversible specific capacity and good capacity retention. Particularly, the initial discharge specific capacity can reach 240mAh/g at current density of 0.13C between 2.0V and 4.5V. It also exhibits an excellent cycling stability with capacity retention of 75% after 50 cycles. The present work suggests choosing appropriate transition metal M and M′ for Li2MO3-LiM′O2 composite should be an efficient strategy for designing new cathode materials.
A New Ternary Co-Free Layered Cathode, Li[Ni1--Ti Al ]O2, for High-Energy Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:For the sustainable development of Li[Ni x Co y Mn1− x − y ]O2 and Li[Ni x Co y Al1− x − y ]O2 cathodes, reducing the reliance on cobalt, which is extremely expensive with a fluctuating price and supply uncertainty, is considered essential. In this study, we propose a highly stable Co-free Ni-rich layered cathode developed through a new doping strategy that incorporates heteroelements at different doping stages, including the introduction of Ti during Ni(OH)2 synthesis and doping excess amounts of Al during the lithiation step. The multi-stage engineering strategy guarantees structural durability and electrochemical cycling stability of the inherently unstable LNO to a commercially viable level. Combined with particle surface protection, the Li[Ni0.951Ti0.008Al0.041]O2 cathode retains 72.0% of its initial capacity after 3500 cycles, which is unprecedented among previously reported Co-free cathodes. The proposed Co-free cathodes can meet the energy density required for next-generation electric vehicles, as the cathode delivers 890 Wh kgcathode -1, and presents a clear breakthrough for the development of commercially viable LNO cathode.

Abstract:Due to high energy density and lower manufacturing cost, anode-free lithium-metal batteries (AFLMBs) are attracting increasing attention. The challenges for developing them lie in inferior Coulombic efficiency and short cycle life due to the highly reactive lithium metal. Herein, an electrochemical pre-lithiation strategy is applied to layered oxide cathodes, specifically LiNiO2 and LiCoO2 , aiming to provide an additional lithium source and understand the effect on the cathode structure for AFLMBs. The mechanism for accommodating the excess Li depends on the structural stability of the cathodes where LiNiO2 forms lithiated Li2 NiO2 with the excess lithium in the crystalline lattice while the excess lithium in LiCoO2 forms a Li2 O phase. More importantly, an optimal amount of Li excess is necessary to maintain decent cycle stability and specific capacity in AFLMB, with 40% excess Li for LiNiO2 and 150% for LiCoO2 . While the pre-lithiation process causes particle pulverization depending on the amount of Li excess, LiCoO2 offers a much better cycle performance than LiNiO2 with a promising capacity retention of 80% after 300 cycles in AFLMB (vs 76% after 100 cycles for 40% Li excess in LiNiO2 ). This study provides a promising avenue for developing tailor-made layered oxide cathodes for AFLMBs.

Abstract:Li- and Mn-rich layered oxides (LMRO) have drawn much attention for application as cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries due to their high-energy density of over 1000 W h kg(-1). However, several issues and challenges need to be overcome before realizing the commercialization of LMRO cathode materials, including their disputed crystal structure, ambiguous reaction mechanism, high initial irreversible capacity, poor cycle life, fast voltage fading, and poor rate capability. In this paper, we systematically review the development history, elaborate the fundamentals and demonstrate the latest research advances in LMRO cathode materials. Furthermore, the applications of LMRO cathode materials and their related key technical issues in full-cells, as well as the prospects for future research are also discussed.

Abstract:The Nickel‐based layered transition metal oxide cathode represented by NCM (LiNixCoyMnzO2, x+ y + z = 1) and NCA (LiNixCoyAlzO2, x+ y + z = 1) is widely used in the electric vehicle market due to its specific capacity and high working potential, in which Cobalt (Co) plays a huge role in improving the structural stability during the cycle. However, the limited supply of Co, due to its scarcity and the influence of geopolitics, poses a significant constraint on the further advancement of the Nickel‐based layered transition metal oxide cathode in the field of energy storage. In this paper, the mechanism of Co in the Nickel‐based layered transition metal oxides is reviewed, including its critical role for structural stability such as the inhibition of cationic mixing and the release of lattice oxygen et al Subsequently, it outlines various strategies to enhance the performance of Co‐lean/free materials are summarized, such as ion doping, including single‐ion doping and multi‐ion co‐doping, and various surface coating strategies, so as to eliminate the adverse effects of Co loss on materials. Ultimately, this paper offers a glimpse into the promising future of Cobalt‐free strategies for high performance of Nickel‐based layered transition metal oxides.

Ni-Rich Layered Oxide with Preferred Orientation (110) Plane as a Stable Cathode Material for High-Energy Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:The cathode, a crucial constituent part of Li-ion batteries, determines the output voltage and integral energy density of batteries to a great extent. Among them, Ni-rich LiNixCoyMnzO2 (x + y + z = 1, x ≥ 0.6) layered transition metal oxides possess a higher capacity and lower cost as compared to LiCoO2, which have stimulated widespread interests. However, the wide application of Ni-rich cathodes is seriously hampered by their poor diffusion dynamics and severe voltage drops. To moderate these problems, a nanobrick Ni-rich layered LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 cathode with a preferred orientation (110) facet was designed and successfully synthesized via a modified co-precipitation route. The galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis of LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 reveal its superior kinetic performance endowing outstanding rate performance and long-term cycle stability, especially the voltage drop being as small as 67.7 mV at a current density of 0.5 C for 200 cycles. Due to its unique architecture, dramatically shortened ion/electron diffusion distance, and more unimpeded Li-ion transmission pathways, the current nanostructured LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 cathode enhances the Li-ion diffusion dynamics and suppresses the voltage drop, thus resulting in superior electrochemical performance.

Abstract:The Li2MnO3 coated LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 electrode has been sucessfully synthesized through a PVP-chelation and syn-lithiation strategy. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron Spectrometer (XPS) characterizations are applied to verify the existence of the Li2MnO3 surface layer. The complete and nanoscale Li2MnO3 coating layer strongly adheres to the host material because of the layered/layered homostyructure, improves the content of Mn element on the surface of the electrode and has three-dimensional path for Li+-ion diffusion. Due to the numerous unique and dramatic advantages of the Li2MnO3 surface layer, the layered/layered homostyructure electrode exhibits superior cycle stability, rate capability and other electrochemical properties. The newly developmental coating material and versatile nanocoating strategy can also be popularized and applied in other electrode materials. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The layered Li[Li0.20Ni0.128Co0.136Mn0.536]O2 power was synthesized by reacting precursor M(OH)2(M=Ni,Co,Mn) prepared by co-precipitation with LiOH·H2O through high temperature solid-state method.The surface of cathode material was coated with Al2O3.The XRD,SEM and electrochemical measurements were used to characterize the structure,morphology and electrochemical performance of the product.The XRD results show that the as-prepared Li[Li0.20Ni0.128Co0.136Mn0.536]O2 has a-NaFeO2 layered structure.Al2O3 coating does not cause structure change.The SEM images show that the particles after coating have similar shape and size to the precursor.At 0.1 C rate,the discharge specific capacity is 210.2 mAh/g at the first cycle and in the 80th cycle,it is 153.4 mAh/g.After Al2O3 coating,the discharge specific capacity reaches 220.5 mAh/g and remains 211.5 mAh/g after 80 cycles.It shows that Al2O3 coating improves the cycling performance significantly.
