Abstract:High‐temperature geothermal water has abundant lithium resources, and researches on the development and utilization of geothermal‐type lithium resources around the world are increasing. The Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau contains huge geothermal resources. Especially, the lithium‐rich geothermal resources in Southern Xizang are widely developed, however, the degree of their research, exploitation and utilization are still very low, and they have not attracted their due attention. The lithium‐rich geothermal spots in Xizang are mainly distributed on both sides of the Yarlung Zangbo suture zone and its southern part. They are often found in the intensely active high‐temperature lithium‐rich geothermal fields. Compared with other lithium‐rich geothermal fields around the world, the lithium‐rich geothermal fluid in Southern Xizang is characterized by good quality (the highest reported lithium concentration is up to 239 mg/L; the Mg/Li ratio is extremely low and range from 0.03 to 1.48 for most of the lithium‐rich geothermal fluid; the Li/TDS value is relatively high and range from 0.25%‐1.14% (Zhabuye lithium‐rich salt lake: 0.19 %; Salar de Uyuni (Bolivia): 0.08‐0.31%); the continuous discharge is stable at least for several decades, and some of them reach industrial grades (32.74 mg/L: according to the industrial grades of Salt lake brine). In addition, elements such as B, Cs, and Rb is rich and can be comprehensively utilized), large scale (according to incomplete statistics, there are at least 16 lithium‐rich hot springs with lithium concentration of 20 mg/L or more, and the total discharge of lithium metal is about 4281 tons every year, equivalent to 25686 tons of lithium carbonate, moreover, drilling data has shown that the depth is still very promising) and the lack of volcanism (non‐volcanic geothermal system). Under the background of the lower crust partially melting caused by the collision of the Indo‐Asia continent and based on a comprehensive analysis of the tectonic background of southern Xizang and previous geological, geophysical, and geothermal researches, we believe the deep molten magma provides a stable heat source for the high‐temperature lithium‐rich geothermal field. The lithium‐rich parent geothermal fluid rushes to the surface to form hot springs along the extensively developed tectonic fault zones in Southern Xizang, and some of the lithium‐rich fluid flows into the lakes to form lithium‐rich salt lakes, however, most of the lithium‐rich geothermal fluid is remitted to seasonal rivers and has not been effectively exploited, resulting in great waste. With the continuous advancement of lithium extraction technologies in lithium‐rich geothermal fluid, the lithium resource in geothermal water is promising as a new type of mineral deposit—the geothermal‐type lithium deposit and will be effectively exploited. This is the first study to undertake a longitudinal analysis and briefly introduces the characteristics, distribution and scale, origin and utilization prospects of the lithium‐rich geothermal resources in Southern Xizang, China. Due to practical constraints, a full discussion of lithium‐rich geothermal systems lies beyond the scope of this study. It is hoped that this research will contribute to a deeper understanding of lithium‐rich geothermal resource in Southern Xizang and attract people's attention to the lithium‐rich geothermal resources in China. Finally, find out the geothermal‐type lithium reserves in China through strengthening the relevant exploration investment and basic research, and then to realize the industrial extraction and utilization of geothermal‐type lithium resources in the near future.
