Abstract:Controlled assembly of microscale objects can be achieved by exploiting interactions that dominate at that length scale. Capillary interactions are an excellent candidate for this purpose; microparticles trapped at fluid interfaces disturb the interface shape, migrate, and assemble to minimize the interfacial area. These interactions are independent of microparticle material properties and so can be used to assemble objects of arbitrary materials. By using a magnetic robot as a mobile distortion source, additional control over assembly can be achieved. For example, millimeter-scale magnetic robots that are heavy enough to distort the interface have been used to generate long range capillary attractions and collect passive particles that are hundreds of micrometers in diameter. However, for smaller robots and particles, gravity is less important, and capillary interactions rely on interface distortions from undulated contact lines. We use a magnetic microrobot to manipulate passive microparticles at the water/hexadecane interface via an interplay of hydrodynamic and capillary interactions. Furthermore, we demonstrate preferred docking at corners of a square microrobot without the need for high resolution position control. We modulate the strength of docking interactions, allowing structure assembly and release. Finally, we design undulated docking stations with multiple stable sites for cargo delivery. The ability to dynamically manipulate microparticles and their structures at fluid interfaces creates new possibilities for manufacturing of complex microstructures.

Abstract:Noncontact actuation has gained a large interest over the last few years, and many works have been performed on magnetic actuation, dielectrophoresis, or optical tweezers. Thermocapillary convective flows are an attractive alternative to manipulate micrometric scale particles at the water/air interface. These flows are generated when a surface tension stress is generated at the fluid/gas interface due to a thermal gradient. Laser heating allows to generate fast, localized flows that improve the actuation performance. In this paper, a closed-loop controller is used to control the particle motion. To design this controller, a model for the system is proposed and experimentally identified. Proof of concept experiments are performed using a 500-$\mu$ m-diameter steel spherical particle that show that the particle can be successfully displaced towards a target position. Experimental results show that maximal particle velocities between 4–9 mm/s can be attained during the control phase, which can be compared against some of the fastest actuation principles that use Marangoni effect.

Abstract:Techniques for high-definition micromanipulations, such as optical tweezers, hold substantial interest across a wide range of disciplines. However, their applicability remains constrained by material properties and laser exposure. And while microfluidic manipulations have been suggested as an alternative, their inherent capabilities are limited and further hindered by practical challenges of implementation and control. Here we show that the iterative application of laser-induced, localized flow fields can be used for the relative positioning of multiple micro-particles, irrespectively of their material properties. Compared to the standing theoretical proposal, our method keeps particles mobile, and we show that their precision manipulation is non-linearly accelerated via the multiplexing of temperature stimuli below the heat diffusion limit. The resulting flow fields are topologically rich and mathematically predictable. They represent unprecedented microfluidic control capabilities that are illustrated by the actuation of humanoid micro-robots with up to 30 degrees of freedom, whose motions are sufficiently well-defined to reliably communicate personal characteristics such as gender, happiness and nervousness. Our results constitute high-definition micro-fluidic manipulations with transformative potential for assembly, micro-manufacturing, the life sciences, robotics and opto-hydraulically actuated micro-factories.

Abstract:Aquatic organisms within the Cephalopoda family (e.g., octopuses, squids, cuttlefish) exist that draw the surrounding fluid inside their bodies and expel it in a single jet thrust to swim forward. Like cephalopods, several acoustically powered microsystems share a similar process of fluid expulsion which makes them useful as microfluidic pumps in lab-on-a-chip devices. Herein, an array of acoustically resonant bubbles are employed to mimic this pumping phenomenon inside an untethered microrobot called CeFlowBot. CeFlowBot contains an array of vibrating bubbles that pump fluid through its inner body thereby boosting its propulsion. CeFlowBots are later functionalized with magnetic layers and steered under combined influence of magnetic and acoustic fields. Moreover, acoustic power modulation of CeFlowBots is used to grasp nearby objects and release it in the surrounding workspace. The ability of CeFlowBots to navigate remote environments under magneto-acoustic fields and perform targeted manipulation makes such microrobots useful for clinical applications such as targeted drug delivery. Lastly, an ultrasound imaging system is employed to visualize the motion of CeFlowBots which provides means to deploy such microrobots in hard-to-reach environments inaccessible to optical cameras.

Abstract:Microrobots working at liquid surfaces have immense potential for micromanipulation in tight and enclosed spaces, whereas constructing agile and functional microrobots with simple structures at liquid surfaces is a great challenge. Herein, a pair of magnetic circular microdisks working as partners at ethylene glycol (EG) surfaces are proposed in order to accomplish flexible locomotion and in situ micromanipulation tasks. The microdisks can be controlled to connect and separate by modulating the orientation of the applied magnetic field. After the two disks connect as an entity, they are transformed into micropartners under an oscillating magnetic field in 3D space. By changing the vertical component of the oscillating field, the micropartners can obtain controllable propulsion through paddling and wriggling modes, and the locomotion speed can reach approximately two body lengths per second. They can also climb a meniscus, and even crawl on a solid surface in a liquid. Finally, this pair of micropartners is demonstrated as a flexible microgripper to implement manipulations at the liquid surfaces, including cargo capture, delivery along prescribed paths, and release.

Abstract:We present a novel method for the three-dimensional (3D) control of microrobots within a microfluidic chip. The microrobot body contains a hollow space, producing buoyancy that allows it to float in a microfluidic environment. The robot moves in the z direction by balancing magnetic and buoyancy forces. In coordination with the motion of stages in the xy plane, we achieved 3D microrobot control. A microgripper designed to grasp micron-scale objects was attached to the front of the robot, allowing it to hold and deliver micro-objects in three dimensions. The microrobot had four degrees of freedom and generated micronewton-order forces. We demonstrate the microrobot's utility in an experiment in which it grips a 200 μm particle and delivers it in a 3D space.

Abstract:Abstract Metamaterials have attracted wide scientific interest to break fundamental bounds on materials properties. Recently, the field has been extending to coupled physical phenomena where one physics acts as the driving force for another. Stimuli-responsive or 4D metamaterials have been demonstrated for thermo-elasticity, magneto-optics or piezo-electricity. Herein, a soft, ultra-compact and accurate microrobot is described which can achieve controlled motion under thermal stimuli. The system consists of an organized assembly of two functional structures: a rotational and a translational element. Both elements are designed basing upon the principle of the thermoelastic bilayer plate that bends as temperature changes. Samples are fabricated using gray-tone lithography from a single polymer but with two different laser writing powers, making each part different in its thermal and mechanical behaviors. Excellent motion-controllable, reversible and stable features in a dry environment are verified by simulations and experiments, revealing broad application prospects for the designed soft micro actuators.

Abstract:Microfluidics has enabled the miniaturization of fluidic systems for various biomedical and industrial applications, including small-scale robotic propulsion. One mechanism for generating propulsive force through microfluidics is by exploiting the solutal Marangoni effect via releasing surfactant on the air-water interface. Surfactants locally reduce the surface tension, which leads to a surface stress that can propel the floating robot, called Marangoni surfer. However, so far the release of the surfactant is not controllable. In this study, we combine microfluidics-based Marangoni propulsion with a novel untethered magnetic pumping mechanism to enhance its controllability. The proposed magnetic micropump capitalizes on the interaction force between two soft magnets, which can generate a pumping force of 4.64 mN to actuate a membrane, and achieve a deformation of 450 μm. Net flow is achieved using a nozzle/diffuser flow rectifier whose efficacy as a function of the channel geometry is numerically studied. We investigate the flow rate of the pump with regard to the actuation frequency. Finally, we demonstrate its ability to control the motion of the Marangoni surfer.

Abstract:A novel thermo-driven microcrawler that can transform thermal stimuli into directional mechanical motion is developed by a simple microfluidic approach together with emulsion-template synthesis. The microcrawler is designed with a thermo-responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) hydrogel body and a bell-like structure with an eccentric cavity. The asymmetric shrinking–swelling circulation of the microcrawlers enables a thermo-driven locomotion responding to repeated temperature changes, which provides a novel model with symmetry breaking principle for designing biomimetic soft microrobots. The microfluidic approach offers a novel and promising platform for design and fabrication of biomimetic soft microrobots.

Abstract:Multimodal swimming microrobots are shown using a soft "bubble tentacle" to work, based on an intriguing mechanism of the microbubble cavitation‐induced‐jet near the air–liquid interface. This bubble microrobot manifests high controllability and great maneuverability: easy control either by a gamepad or program, remote speed modulation without changing fuel, convenient switch among different working modes, and near or far field manipulation of multiple targets. The development of multifunctional and robust swimming microrobots working at the free air–liquid interface has encountered challenge as new manipulation strategies are needed to overcome the complicated interfacial restrictions. Here, flexible but reliable mechanisms are shown that achieve a remote‐control bubble microrobot with multiple working modes and high maneuverability by the assistance of a soft air–liquid interface. This bubble microrobot is developed from a hollow Janus microsphere (JM) regulated by a magnetic field, which can implement switchable working modes like pusher, gripper, anchor, and sweeper. The collapse of the microbubble and the accompanying directional jet flow play a key role for functioning in these working modes, which is analogous to a "bubble tentacle." Using a simple gamepad, the orientation and the navigation of the bubble microrobot can be easily manipulated. In particular, a speed modulation method is found for the bubble microrobot, which uses vertical magnetic field to control the orientation of the JM and the direction of the bubble‐induced jet flow without changing the fuel concentration. The findings demonstrate a substantial advance of the bubble microrobot specifically working at the air–liquid interface and depict some nonintuitive mechanisms that can help develop more complicated microswimmers.

Abstract:Recent strides in microfabrication technologies offer important possibilities for developing microscale robotic systems with enhanced power, functionality and versatility. Previous microrobots fabricated by lithographic techniques usually lack the ability to adaptively deform in confined and constricted spaces and navigate through, therefore hindering their applications in complex biological environments. Here, a microfluidic strategy is combined with a dip-coating process for continuous fabrication of soft helical structures with controllable mechanical property as magnetically propelled microrobots, capable of actively propelling through narrow and sinuous microchannels. Because of their self-adaptive deformation capability, the magnetically propelled soft microrobots can actively navigate through a narrow opening, 2.21 times smaller than the sectional area of the microrobot, and a U-shape-bent capillary, directed by a programmed magnetic field. Additionally, the soft microrobot demonstrates increased swimming speed in a fluid of high viscosity, because of the adaptive tightening deformation of the helix when swimming. This new magnetically propelled soft microrobot and its attractive performance will open up new possibilities for biomedical operation at the micro and nanoscale.

Abstract:In this paper, we report a digital liquid transporting chip which can manipulate droplets precisely based on thermal Marangoni force induced by thermal gradient. Detailed mathematical discussion shows that threshold force for mobilization is a function of droplet size and liquid parameters, and droplet velocity after depinning is a function of applied thermal gradient, droplet size and liquid parameters. The device with Ti as micro-heater, Au film as pad, Cr/Au as controlling electrode arrays, high quality SiO2 film as dielectric layer on glass substrate is fabricated by silicon bulk process and employs fluorocarbon polymer as hydrophobic layer to functionalize the surface to be hydrophobic so as to facilitate droplet transportation. Test results show that transportation velocity of 3 mu l DI water and silicone oil can reach 0.1 mm/s and 1 mm/s respectively at a voltage of 7 V. Driving voltage, transportation velocity of droplets and effect of contact angle hysteresis are discussed and the results are in agreement with theoretical results. The results provide some practical guidelines for the design of microfluidic chips based on thermocapillary actuation. In this study, we demonstrated that thermocapillary actuation of droplets is tunable and the chip can find great application in lab-on-a-chip due to its simple structure and low-cost fabrication process. Abstract:Traditional robotic systems have proven to be instrumental in object manipulation tasks for automated manufacturing processes. Object manipulation in such cases typically involves transport, pick-and-place and assembly of objects using automated conveyors and robotic arms. However, the forces at microscopic scales (e.g., surface tension, Van der Waals, electrostatic) can be qualitatively and quantitatively different from those at macroscopic scales. These forces render the release of objects difficult, and hence, traditional systems cannot be directly transferred to small scales (below a few millimeters). Consequently, novel micro-robotic manipulation systems have to be designed to take into account these scaling effects. Such systems could be beneficial for micro-fabrication processes and for biological studies. Here, we show autonomous position control of passive particles floating at the air-water interface using a collective of self-organized spinning micro-disks with a diameter of ${300}\,{\mathrm {\mu m}}$ . First, we show that the spinning micro-disks collectives generate azimuthal flows that cause passive particles to orbit around them. We then develop a closed-loop controller to demonstrate autonomous position control of passive particles without physical contact. Finally, we showcase the capability of our system to split from an expanded to several circular collectives while holding the particle at a fixed target. Our system’s contact-free object manipulation capability could be used for transporting delicate biological objects and for guiding self-assembly of passive objects for micro-fabrication.

Abstract:We describe the motion of self-propelled catalytic Ti/Fe/Pt rolled-up microtubes (microbots) in the microchannels of a microfluidics system. Their motion is precisely controlled by a small magnetic field, and the transport of multiple spherical microparticles into desired locations is achieved. The microbots are powerful enough to propel themselves against flowing streams. The integration of "smart and powerful" microbots into microchip systems can lead to multiple lab-on-a-chip functions such as separation of cells and biosensing.

Abstract:Various driving methods have been developed in the microfluidic technology to manipulate small amounts of liquid. Among them, the photocontrol way has been highlighted for its advantages in contactless and accuracy control. However, the illumination method may induce risks of radiation damage, thermal damage or chemical environment changes. To avoid these risks, a photothermal pneumatic microfluidic device (PPMD) containing a photothermal composite, an air chamber and a tube is designed, bio‐inspired by the feeding process of female mosquitos. One way to drive liquid columns at a constant velocity higher than 1.0 cm s−1 in microtubes without interface modification is successfully obtained, and a method to separate out water‐oil two‐phase liquid mixtures is proposed. The integration of several single PPMDs enables complex logical operations (AND and OR) towards precise control of micro reactions. This work is promising in fields of microfluidic chips, pneumatic devices, liquid transfer, micro reactions and water‐oil phase separation.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:This paper presents a novel manipulation method for micro-objects using acoustically oscillating bubbles with a controllable position based on the gas permeability of polydimethylsiloxane. The oscillating bubble trapped within the side channel attracts the neighboring micro-objects, and the position of the air-liquid interface is controlled by generating temporary pressure difference between the side channel and the air channel. To demonstrate the feasibility of the method in technological applications, polystyrene microparticles of 10 μm in diameter were successfully captured, transported, and released. The influence of pressure difference on the movement speed of the air-liquid interface was demonstrated in our experiments, and the manipulation performance was also characterized by varying the frequency of the acoustic excitation and the pressure difference. Since the bubble generation and the air-liquid interface movement in our manipulation method do not need any electrochemical reaction and any high temperature, this on-chip manipulation method provides a controllable, efficient, and noninvasive tool for handling micro-objects such as particles, cells, and other entities. The whole manipulation process, including capturing, transporting, and releasing of particles, spent less than 1 min. It can be used to select the cells and particles in the microfluidic device or change the cell culture medium.

Abstract:The liquid robot, an advanced form of the soft robot, can freely trans-form between different morphologies. From the perspective of mate-rials science, difficulty fabricating liquid functional materials hinders the development of liquid robots. Here, we report a paramagnetic -fluid-constructed liquid microrobot (1-1,000 mm) based on paramag-netic microdroplets. The paramagnetism not only allows the scaling down of the liquid robot to microscales but also renders the microro-bots reversible between paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transition upon magnetic field application. Furthermore, the paramagnetism equips these microrobots with on-board imaging and sensing abilities. The combined T1-T2 imaging modes cross-validated the real-time motion of the microrobots. The deformation degrees of these microrobots, which vary based on the structure of their surroundings, is measured by an ultra-low-field atomic magnetometer. The fabrication and char-acterization of these multifunctional paramagnetic liquid microrobots will lay the basis for their in vivo biomedical applications.

Abstract:This paper describes a micro-pumping technology using laser induced thermal bubbles, which offers greater flexibility for selective control of flow directions in microfluidic chips. Without complicated fabrication, the bubble in the microchannel could be created by focusing a continuous-wave laser onto the patterned metal pad. Experiments demonstrate that the flow direction can be freely chosen at a T-junction and the flow velocity could be adjusted from 100 to 400 μm/s in real time by adjusting the laser power. This technology can be readily incorporated into the lab-on-a-chip systems for flexible microfluidic manipulation.

Abstract:Microrobots have emerged as powerful tools for manipulating particles, cells, and assembling biological tissue structures at the microscale. However, achieving precise and flexible operation of arbitrary-shaped microstructures in 3D space remains a challenge. In this study, three novel operation methods based on bubble microrobots are proposed to enable delicate and multifunctional manipulation of various microstructures. These methods include 3D turnover, fixed-point rotation, and 3D ejection. By harnessing the combined principles of the effect of the heat flow field and surface tension of an optothermally generated bubble, the bubble microrobot can perform tasks such as flipping an SIA humanoid structure, rotating a bird-like structure, and launching a hollow rocket-like structure. The proposed multi-mode operation of bubble microrobots enables diverse attitude adjustments of microstructures with different sizes and shapes in both 2D and 3D spaces. As a demonstration, a biological microenvironment of brain glioblastoma is constructed by the bubble microrobot. The simplicity, versatility, and flexibility of this proposed method hold great promise for applications in micromanipulation, assembly, and tissue engineering.
