Abstract:Jasmonate (JA) is important molecule in inducing plant defense response. JA is a key component in systemin signalling, and plays an essential role in long-distance wound signalling. JA also exerts indirect role in plant defense response independently or with other phytohormones by regulating the biosynthesis of secondary metabolite ——glucosinolate, which is closely related to plant defense response. This review summarizes recent studies in unraveling the role of JA in plant defense response, and highlights the prospective of future research in this area.

Abstract:Jasmonates (JAs) are important phytohormones that regulate a wide range of plant processes including growth, development, senescence, and defense. Jasmonate ZIM-domain (JAZ) proteins are repressors in JA signaling. In Arabidopsis thaliana, 12 JAZ encoding genes were identified, but only a few have been studied in detail. In this study, we focused on characterizing the molecular networks involving JAZ2 and JAZ7. To understand the phenotypes and elucidate the regulatory functions of JAZ2 and JAZ7, shoot and root tissues from wild type (WT), jaz2, and jaz7 were harvested for RNA sequencing and metabolomics. Distinct changes of transcripts and metabolites in JA biosynthesis, primary and specialized metabolism, and oxidative stress were observed among the three genotypes. In particular, many defense or stress-associated metabolites and specialized metabolites were increased in response to methyl jasmonate (MeJA) treatment. Most importantly, these changes were subjected to quantitative modulation by the JAZ proteins at both transcriptional and metabolic levels, the degree of which may control resource allocation between growth and defense. This study not only reveals MeJA-induced molecular reprogramming but also demonstrates the functions of JAZ proteins as key regulators in fine-tuning JA signal transduction.

Abstract:Jasmonic acid (JA), a plant endogenously synthesized lipid hormone, plays an important role in response to stress. This manuscript summarized the biosynthesis and metabolism of JA and its related regulatory mechanisms, as well as the signal transduction of JA. The mechanism and regulatory network of JA in plant response to biotic and abiotic stresses were systematically reviewed, with the latest advances highlighted. In addition, this review summarized the signal crosstalk between JA and other hormones in regulating plant resistance to various stresses. Finally, the problems to be solved in the study of plant stress resistance mediated by JA were discussed, and the application of new molecular biological technologies in regulating JA signaling to enhance crop resistance was prospected, with the aim to facilitate future research and application of plant stress resistance.

Abstract:Tea plants have to adapt to frequently challenging environments due to their sessile lifestyle and perennial evergreen nature. Jasmonates regulate not only tea plants’ responses to biotic stresses, including herbivore attack and pathogen infection, but also tolerance to abiotic stresses, such as extreme weather conditions and osmotic stress. In this review, we summarize recent progress about jasmonaic acid (JA) biosynthesis and signaling pathways, as well as the underlying mechanisms mediated by jasmontes in tea plants in responses to biotic stresses and abiotic stresses. This review provides a reference for future research on the JA signaling pathway in terms of its regulation against various stresses of tea plants. Due to the lack of a genetic transformation system, the JA pathway of tea plants is still in the preliminary stages. It is necessary to perform further efforts to identify new components involved in the JA regulatory pathway through the combination of genetic and biochemical methods.

Abstract:Plants continually monitor their innate developmental status and external environment and make adjustments to balance growth, differentiation and stress responses using a complex and highly interconnected regulatory network composed of various signaling molecules and regulatory proteins. Phytohormones are an essential group of signaling molecules that work through a variety of different pathways conferring plasticity to adapt to the everchanging developmental and environmental cues. Of these, jasmonic acid (JA), a lipid-derived molecule, plays an essential function in controlling many different plant developmental and stress responses. In the past decades, significant progress has been made in our understanding of the molecular mechanisms that underlie JA metabolism, perception, signal transduction and its crosstalk with other phytohormone signaling pathways. In this review, we discuss the JA signaling pathways starting from its biosynthesis to JA-responsive gene expression, highlighting recent advances made in defining the key transcription factors and transcriptional regulatory proteins involved. We also discuss the nature and degree of crosstalk between JA and other phytohormone signaling pathways, highlighting recent breakthroughs that broaden our knowledge of the molecular bases underlying JA-regulated processes during plant development and biotic stress responses.

Abstract:As sessile organisms, plants must tolerate various environmental stresses. Plant hormones play vital roles in plant responses to biotic and abiotic stresses. Among these hormones, jasmonic acid (JA) and its precursors and derivatives (jasmonates, JAs) play important roles in the mediation of plant responses and defenses to biotic and abiotic stresses and have received extensive research attention. Although some reviews of JAs are available, this review focuses on JAs in the regulation of plant stress responses, as well as JA synthesis, metabolism, and signaling pathways. We summarize recent progress in clarifying the functions and mechanisms of JAs in plant responses to abiotic stresses (drought, cold, salt, heat, and heavy metal toxicity) and biotic stresses (pathogen, insect, and herbivore). Meanwhile, the crosstalk of JA with various other plant hormones regulates the balance between plant growth and defense. Therefore, we review the crosstalk of JAs with other phytohormones, including auxin, gibberellic acid, salicylic acid, brassinosteroid, ethylene, and abscisic acid. Finally, we discuss current issues and future opportunities in research into JAs in plant stress responses.

Abstract:Plants, being sessile, have developed complex signaling and response mechanisms to cope with biotic and abiotic stressors. Recent investigations have revealed the significant contribution of phytohormones in enabling plants to endure unfavorable conditions. Among these phytohormones, jasmonic acid (JA) and its derivatives, collectively referred to as jasmonates (JAs), are of particular importance and are involved in diverse signal transduction pathways to regulate various physiological and molecular processes in plants, thus protecting plants from the lethal impacts of abiotic and biotic stressors. Jasmonic acid has emerged as a central player in plant defense against biotic stress and in alleviating multiple abiotic stressors in plants, such as drought, salinity, vernalization, and heavy metal exposure. Furthermore, as a growth regulator, JA operates in conjunction with other phytohormones through a complex signaling cascade to balance plant growth and development against stresses. Although studies have reported the intricate nature of JA as a biomolecular entity for the mitigation of abiotic stressors, their underlying mechanism and biosynthetic pathways remain poorly understood. Therefore, this review offers an overview of recent progress made in understanding the biosynthesis of JA, elucidates the complexities of its signal transduction pathways, and emphasizes its pivotal role in mitigating abiotic and biotic stressors. Moreover, we also discuss current issues and future research directions for JAs in plant stress responses.

Abstract:Phytohormones are the key regulators of plant growth, development, and responses to environmental stressors. Among these, jasmonates (JAs) are particularly crucial, derived mainly from α-linolenic acid (α-LA). JAs govern various physiological processes like seed germination, root elongation, and apical hook formation, while also influencing secondary metabolite production and defense mechanisms. Interacting with enzymes, genes, and other growth regulators, JAs modulate intricate signaling pathways, activating metabolic responses in both normal and stressed conditions. Transcription factors such as MYB, WRKY, basic Helix-Loop-Helix (bHLH), and APETALA2/JA-responsive ethylene response factor (AP2/ERF) are central components to JA signaling pathways, impacting the synthesis of bioactive compounds of therapeutic potential. Additionally, JAs act as chemical elicitors, promoting secondary metabolite production in vitro, leveraging advancements in plant cell and tissue culture techniques. In this regard, the present review offers a comprehensive discussion on diverse roles of JAs in plant physiology and biochemistry, including its biosynthesis, and suggests strategies for large-scale bioactive compound production via plant cell and tissue culture methods.

Abstract:Plants as immovable organisms sense the stressors in their environment and respond to them by means of dedicated stress response pathways. In response to stress, jasmonates (jasmonic acid, its precursors and derivatives), a class of polyunsaturated fatty acid-derived phytohormones, play crucial roles in several biotic and abiotic stresses. As the major immunity hormone, jasmonates participate in numerous signal transduction pathways, including those of gene networks, regulatory proteins, signaling intermediates, and proteins, enzymes, and molecules that act to protect cells from the toxic effects of abiotic stresses. As cellular hubs for integrating informational cues from the environment, jasmonates play significant roles in alleviating salt stress, drought stress, heavy metal toxicity, micronutrient toxicity, freezing stress, ozone stress, CO2 stress, and light stress. Besides these, jasmonates are involved in several developmental and physiological processes throughout the plant life. In this review, we discuss the biosynthesis and signal transduction pathways of the JAs and the roles of these molecules in the plant responses to abiotic stresses.

Abstract:The phytohormone jasmonic acid (JA), a cyclopentane fatty acid, mediates plant responses to abiotic stresses. Abiotic stresses rapidly and dynamically affect JA metabolism and JA responses by upregulating the expression of genes involved in JA biosynthesis and signaling, indicating that JA has a crucial role in plant abiotic stress responses. The crucial role of JA has been demonstrated in many previous studies showing that JA response regulates various plant defense systems, such as removal of reactive oxygen species and accumulation of osmoprotectants. Furthermore, increasing evidence shows that plant tolerance to abiotic stresses is linked to the JA response, suggesting that abiotic stress tolerance can be improved by modulating JA responses. In this review, we briefly describe the JA biosynthetic and signaling pathways and summarize recent studies showing an essential role of JA in plant responses and tolerance to a variety of abiotic stresses, such as drought, cold, salt, and heavy metal stress. Additionally, we discuss JA crosstalk with another key stress hormone, abscisic acid, in plant abiotic stress responses.

Abstract:Jasmonic acid (JA) and its many derivatives constitute a diverse family of modified oxylipins that are involved in hormonal defense responses, growth regulation, and other aspects of plant physiology. To respond to external cues, plants synthesize jasmonyl-isoleucine (JA-Ile), the active form of the hormone, using the acyl acid amido synthetase JAR1. JA-Ile then targets the jasmonate F-box receptor (i.e., the COI1-ASK1 complex), and recruits JASMONATE-ZIM DOMAIN PROTEIN (JAZ) proteins. This results in degradation of the JAZ protein repressor to regulate jasmonate gene responses. Alternatively, when JA-Ile levels decline, JAZ proteins can bind an array of co-repressors and transcription factors to down-regulate JA responses. Three-dimensional structures of the protein players involved in JA signaling shed light on the molecular architecture of the binding interactions between proteins and the specific chemistry of the enzymes. Additionally, structures of the JA biosynthesis and modifying enzymes provide insight into the strict stereospecific formation of JA (i.e., 3R, 7S-jasmonate), as well as decorated forms of JA. Here we provide an up-to-date look into the structural investigations of JA signaling and metabolism and suggest future areas of study that remain to be understood on the molecular level.

Abstract:Jasmonic acid (JA) is an endogenous growth-regulating substance, initially identified as a stress-related hormone in higher plants. Similarly, the exogenous application of JA also has a regulatory effect on plants. Abiotic stress often causes large-scale plant damage. In this review, we focus on the JA signaling pathways in response to abiotic stresses, including cold, drought, salinity, heavy metals, and light. On the other hand, JA does not play an independent regulatory role, but works in a complex signal network with other phytohormone signaling pathways. In this review, we will discuss transcription factors and genes involved in the regulation of the JA signaling pathway in response to abiotic stress. In this process, the JAZ-MYC module plays a central role in the JA signaling pathway through integration of regulatory transcription factors and related genes. Simultaneously, JA has synergistic and antagonistic effects with abscisic acid (ABA), ethylene (ET), salicylic acid (SA), and other plant hormones in the process of resisting environmental stress.

Abstract:Plant hormones play central roles in plant growth, developmental processes, and plant response to biotic and abiotic stresses. On the one hand, plant hormones may allocate limited resources to the most serious stresses; on the other hand, the crosstalks among multiple plant hormone signaling regulate the balance between plant growth and defense. Many studies have reported the mechanism of crosstalks between jasmonic acid (JA) and other plant hormones in plant growth and stress responses. Based on these studies, this paper mainly reviews the crosstalks between JA and other plant hormone signaling in regulating the balance between plant growth and defense response. The suppressor proteins JASMONATE ZIM DOMAIN PROTEIN (JAZ) and MYC2 as the key components in the crosstalks are also highlighted in the review. We conclude that JA interacts with other hormone signaling pathways [such as auxin, ethylene (ET), abscisic acid (ABA), salicylic acid (SA), brassinosteroids (BRs), and gibberellin (GA)] to regulate plant growth, abiotic stress tolerance, and defense resistance against hemibiotrophic pathogens such as <i>Magnaporthe oryzae</i> and <i>Pseudomonas syringae</i>. Notably, JA may act as a core signal in the phytohormone signaling network.

Abstract:Jasmonic acid (JA) and its derived compound 'jasmonates' are a class of potent phytohormones that play pivotal roles in plants' physio-biochemical processes during growth and development. With the onset of the 21st century, concurrent climate changes all over the world have drastically affected plants' adaptability and survivability against (a)biotic stressors. Such climatic instabilities trigger a variety of pathogens (mainly fungi, bacteria, and viruses) to create disease pressure by affecting plant health and the immune barrier. JA is crucial for plant immune response through their biosynthetic pathways, involvement in signalling cascades and corresponding cross-talk with other phytohormones like salicylic acid (SA), ethylene (ET) and abscisic acid (ABA). In this perspective, the endogenous role of JA lies behind the process of cellular central dogma at the molecular level. The genes and gene products, like transcription factors (TFs) associated with JA biosynthesis and signalling, impart some sort of regulation on plant immune response by activating systemic and localized signalling, pathogenesis-related (PR) genes and proteins, phytoalexins, modulating pathogen effectors, and interacting with host proteins. In addition, the external application of JA can also significantly lead to stimulating the immune circuit of plants through gene expression and protein interaction. In this way, JA can boost a plant's immune system through systemic acquired resistance (SAR) and induced systemic resistance (ISR). This could be an idea to understand the hormonal interplay in plant immune response to various types of pathogens and provide the resistance mechanism against yield and quality losses.

Abstract:Jasmonates (JAs) [Jasmonic acid (JA) and methyl jasmonates (MeJAs)] are known to take part in various physiological processes. Exogenous application of JAs so far tested on different plants under abiotic stresses particularly salinity, drought, and temperature (low/high) conditions have proved effective in improving plant stress tolerance. However, its extent of effectiveness entirely depends on the type of plant species tested or its concentration. The effects of introgression or silencing of different JA- and Me-JA-related genes have been summarized in this review, which have shown a substantial role in improving crop yield and quality in different plants under stress or non-stress conditions. Regulation of JAs synthesis is impaired in stressed as well as unstressed plant cells/tissues, which is believed to be associated with a variety of metabolic events including signal transduction. Although, mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPKs) are important components of JA signaling and biosynthesis pathways, nitric oxide, ROS, calcium, ABA, ethylene, and salicylic acid are also important mediators of plant growth and development during JA signal transduction and synthesis. The exploration of other signaling molecules can be beneficial to examine the details of underlying molecular mechanisms of JA signal transduction. Much work is to be done in near future to find the proper answers of the questions like action of JA related metabolites, and identification of universal JA receptors etc. Complete signaling pathways involving MAPKs, CDPK, TGA, SIPK, WIPK, and WRKY transcription factors are yet to be investigated to understand the complete mechanism of action of JAs.

Abstract:The phytohormone jasmonate (JA) plays essential roles in plant growth, development and defense. In response to the JA signal, the CORONATINE INSENSITIVE 1 (COl1)-based SCF complexes recruit JASMONATE ZIM-domain (JAZ) repressors for ubiquitination and degradation, and subsequently regulate their downstream signaling components essential for various JA responses. Tremendous progress has been made in understanding the JA signaling pathway and its crosstalk with other phytohormone pathways during the past two decades. Recent studies have revealed that a variety of positive and negative regulators act as targets of JAZs to control distinctive JA responses, and that JAZs and these regulators function as crucial interfaces to mediate synergy and antagonism between JA and other phytohormones. Owing to different regulatory players in JA perception and JA signaling, a fine-tuning of JA-dependent processes in plant growth, development and defense is achieved. In this review, we will summarize the latest progresses in JA signaling and its crosstalk with gibberellin and ethylene.

Abstract:Abiotic stresses are the primary sources of crop losses globally. The identification of key mechanisms deployed and established by plants in response to abiotic stresses is necessary for the maintenance of their growth and persistence. Recent discoveries have revealed that phytohormones or plant growth regulators (PGRs), mainly jasmonic acid (JA), have increased our knowledge of hormonal signaling of plants under stressful environments. Jasmonic acid is involved in various physiological and biochemical processes associated with plant growth and development as well as plant defense mechanism against wounding by pathogen and insect attacks. Recent findings suggest that JA can mediate the effect of abiotic stresses and help plants to acclimatize under unfavorable conditions. As a vital PGR, JA contributes in many signal transduction pathways, i.e., gene network, regulatory protein, signaling intermediates and enzymes, proteins, and other molecules that act to defend cells from the harmful effects of various environmental stresses. However, JA does not work as an independent regulator, but acts in a complex signaling pathway along other PGRs. Further, JA can protect and maintain the integrity of plant cells under several stresses by up-regulating the antioxidant defense. In this review, we have documented the biosynthesis and metabolism of JA and its protective role against different abiotic stresses. Further, JA-mediated antioxidant potential and its crosstalk with other PGRs have also been discussed.
