Abstract:Intelligent hydrogel materials have significant potential for soft robotic applications due to their sharply and reversibly responding to various external stimuli. However, obtaining a biomimetic hydrogel actuator with integrated self-sensing and self-actuation properties is still a great challenge. Herein, a multifunctional conductive hydrogel is fabricated by incorporating a conductive polymer polyaniline (PANI) into a double network poly( N -isopropylacrylamide- co -acrylamide)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PNA/PVA) hydrogel. The as-prepared conductive PNA/PVA/PANI hydrogel could span a wide range of mechanical properties and phase transition temperatures by simply tuning polymer composition. When combined the active PNA/PVA/PANI layer with a passive polyacrylamide (PAAM) layer, a bilayer hydrogel actuator exhibits superior actuation ability with high bending speeds by the thermal stimulation. In addition, the introduction of PANI component endows the PNA/PVA/PANI hydrogel with excellent electrical conductivity up to 3.91 ± 0.15 S/m and ultrahigh-efficiency of photothermal conversion. Consequently, the PNA/PVA/PANI hydrogel not only exhibits piezoresistive strain/pressure sensing in motion recognition and physiological signal monitoring, but also displays a variety of precise and remotely driven photo-responsive locomotion such as contraction, bending, light tracking and weightlifting by locally near-infrared (NIR) illumination. Furthermore, this hydrogel can simultaneously detect these actuation states via real-time resistance change, achieving closed-loop monitoring and sensing feedback. The self-sensing actuation performance has been fully demonstrated by remotely controlling a hydrogel octopus's grasping and object moving activities. The multi-responsiveness and real-time sensory feedback will inspire this material to be applied in novel soft biomimetic actuating materials and systems.

Abstract:Endowing an artificial soft materials system with sensing and actuating is of paramount importance for the development of bioinspired somatosensory soft robotics. A general strategy is demonstrated to fabricate bioinspired somatosensory hydrogel actuators with sensing and actuation capabilities through in situ copolymerization of conductive K‐MXene/PEDOT:PSS ink with thermoresponsive PNIPAM hydrogels. Sophisticated sensing and actuation capabilities of many living organisms in nature have inspired scientists to develop biomimetic somatosensory soft robots. Herein, the design and fabrication of homogeneous and highly conductive hydrogels for bioinspired somatosensory soft actuators are reported. The conductive hydrogels are synthesized by in situ copolymerization of conductive surface‐functionalized MXene/Poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene)/poly(styrenesulfonate) ink with thermoresponsive poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) hydrogels. The resulting hydrogels are found to exhibit high conductivity (11.76 S m−1), strain sensitivity (GF of 9.93), broad working strain range (≈560% strain), and high stability after over 300 loading–unloading cycles at 100% strain. Importantly, shape‐programmable somatosensory hydrogel actuators with rapid response, light‐driven remote control, and self‐sensing capability are developed by chemically integrating the conductive hydrogels with a structurally colored polymer. As the proof‐of‐concept illustration, structurally colored hydrogel actuators are applied for devising light‐driven programmable shape‐morphing of an artificial octopus, an artificial fish, and a soft gripper that can simultaneously monitor their own motions via real‐time resistance variation. This work is expected to offer new insights into the design of advanced somatosensory materials with self‐sensing and actuation capabilities, and pave an avenue for the development of soft‐matter‐based self‐regulatory intelligence via built‐in feedback control that is of paramount significance for intelligent soft robotics and automated machines.

Abstract:Endowing the soft materials system with sensing and actuating ability is significant for smart soft robotics. In this work, highly stretchable and conductive MXene‐encapsulated liquid metal hydrogels are judiciously designed for developing self‐sensing soft actuators that integrate actuation and strain‐sensing functions. Advanced sensation and actuation abilities of various living organisms in nature have inspired researchers to design bioinspired self‐sensing soft actuators. However, the majority of conventional soft actuators primarily possess actuation capabilities while lacking a real‐time sensing signal feedback. Here, a promising strategy is reported to develop highly stretchable and conductive hydrogels for bioinspired self‐sensing soft actuators, which integrate actuation and strain‐sensing functions into a single materials system. The conductive hydrogels are designed and fabricated by in situ copolymerization of amino‐functionalized MXene‐encapsulated liquid metal nanodroplets (LM@A‐MXene) and poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) hydrogels with controllable activated nanogels as nano‐cross‐linkers. The resulting hydrogel presents a compacted conducting network and highly porous microstructure, giving rise to robust integration of high conductivity, excellent strain sensitivity, broad stretchability, high stability, and fast response speed. Interestingly, the gradient network structure, formed by self‐precipitation of LM@A‐MXene, endows the hydrogel with shape‐programmable actuation, light‐driven remote control, and self‐sensing function. As a proof‐of‐concept application, the soft gripper based on the self‐sensing hydrogel actuators is developed, which can not only grasp, lift, and release objects, but also perceive every movement state by monitoring resistance changes. The proposed self‐sensing soft actuator can offer new insights for developing smart soft robotics and other artificial intelligent devices.

Abstract:Intelligent stimulus-responsive actuation and excellent sensation of many living organisms have provided researchers a novel insight to fabricate biomimetic self-sensing systems. However, developing indispensable capabilities for somatosensory actuators with information on-demand display and storage encryption system remains a severe challenge. Herein, an intellective somatosensory gradient hydrogel actuator was demonstrated, which combined excellent actuating speed and high sensitivity for on-demand display and storage of information. The conductive hydrogels are synthesized by one-pot polymerization of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (namely PNIPAM) and polyaniline functionalized MXene (namely P-MXene) nanocomposites where P-MXene nanosheets offer photothermal responsive characteristics to hydrogel and generate directional migration under the DC electric field to make the hydrogel present anisotropic microstructure. The multifunctional hydrogels have advantages of fast response speed (9.23° s −1 ) and excellent cycle stability, augmented photothermal conversion efficiency (increase to 1.18 °C/s upon 808 nm near-infrared light), and the bending angle reached to 9° s −1 could be adjusted through light-driven remote control. Shape-programmable actuators are fabricated by devising ITO glass electrode patterns, controlling DC electric field direction, and thus various shape-morphing designs such as 6, U, S, Ω are watched under the NIR light irradiations, and the conductivity somatosensory hydrogel has outstanding strain sensor properties, within a universal strain range (100 %), good linearity (R 2 = 0.97) and high sensing properties (GF = 3.11). As a proof-of-concept, self-sensing actuators are applied for an information storage system and a simple deception for on-demand information display that can simultaneously deliver information via real-time displayed pattern variation. This work can provide fundamental research for smart soft actuators chemically integrating actuating speed and sensing functions in the field of information encryption.

Abstract:Drawing inspiration from muscle tissue, a self‐sensing actuator featuring a 2‐in‐1 design concept is developed. laser‐induced graphene (LIG) is used as both an electrothermal conversion material and a piezoresistive sensing material to develop the somatosensory actuator. Actuators equipped with proprioceptors can autonomously monitor their operational status, obviating the dependence on visual devices. The biological system realizes the unity of action and perception through the muscle tissue and nervous system. Correspondingly, artificial soft actuators realize the unity of sensing and actuating functions in a single functional material, which will have tremendous potential for developing intelligent and bionic soft robotics. This paper reports the design of a laser‐induced graphene (LIG) electrothermal actuator with self‐sensing capability. LIG, a functional material formed by a one‐step direct‐write lasing procedure under ambient air, is used as electrothermal conversion materials and piezoresistive sensing materials. By transferring LIG to a flexible silicone substrate, the design ability of the LIG‐based actuator unit is enriched, along with an effectively improved sensing sensitivity. Through the integration of different types of well‐designed LIG‐based actuator units, the transformations from multidimensional precursors to 2D and 3D structures are realized. According to the piezoresistive effect of the LIG units during the deformation process, the visual synchronous deformation state feedback of the LIG‐based actuator is proposed. The multimodal crawling soft robotics and the switchable electromagnetic shielding cloak serve as the demonstrations of the self‐sensing LIG‐based actuator, showing the advantage of the design in remote control of the soft robot without relying on the assistance of visual devices.

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive soft actuators have attracted increasing attention in multiple fields since they exhibit unique advantages in safe interaction with humans and adaptability to dynamic environments. However, the study of untethered stimuli-responsive soft actuators has been limited by the slow response speed, irreversible deformations or inability in responding to multiple stimuli. Taking inspiration from the growth process of lotus leaves, we propose a novel design for an untethered soft actuator comprising graphene oxide (GO) and polyethylene (PE), which shows sensitive response to multiple stimuli, including moisture, light, heating, cooling, and elective volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and exhibits significant deformation at a rapid rate (up to 90.5 degrees/s). The high sensitivity of the actuators enables them to be powered by the neglected energy in daily life instead of requiring specialized energy sources, paving the way for the green and sustainable development in soft robotics. In addition, the bending modes and bending degrees of actuators can be programmed to meet the personalized needs of complex three-dimensional structures. Based on GO/PE actuators, a variety of multistimuli-responsive intelligent devices have been developed to demonstrate their application potential in arts, bionics, soft robotics and wearable devices, including interesting WordArt, Chinese paper-cut art pieces, artificial iris, soft crawling robots and a smart cloth unit with adjustable breathability.

Abstract:Multifunctional electronic skins (e-skins), which mimic the somatosensory system of human skin, have been widely employed in wearable devices for intelligent robotics, prosthetics, and human health monitoring. Relatively low sensitivity and severe mutual interferences of multiple stimuli detection have limited the applications of the existing e-skins. To address these challenges, inspired by the physical texture of the natural fingerprint, a novel fully elastomeric e-skin is developed herein for highly sensitive pressure and temperature sensing. A region-partition strategy is utilized to construct the multifunctional fingerprint-shaped sensing elements, where strain isolation structure of indurated film patterns are further embedded to enhance the sensitivity and effectively reduce mutual interferences between the differentiated units. The fully elastomeric graphene/silver/silicone rubber nanocomposites are synthesized with tunable properties including conductivity and sensitivity to satisfy the requirements of highly sensitive pressure and temperature sensing as well as stretchable electrodes. A remarkable progress in sensitivities for both pressure and temperature, up to 5.53 kPa-1 in a wide range of 0.5-120 kPa and 0.42% ℃-1 in 25-60 ℃, respectively, are achieved with the inappreciable mutual interferences. Further studies demonstrate the great potential of the proposed e-skin in the next-generation wearable electronics for human-machine interfaces.

Transparent, photothermal and stretchable alginate-based hydrogels for remote actuation and human motion sensing

Abstract:Multifunctional hydrogels show potential applications in actuators and wearable sensors. However, it is still a challenge to develop a photothermal responsive conductive hydrogel with high transparency, mechanical properties, broad sensing range, and low-temperature resistance. In this work, a transparent, photothermal responsive, and highly stretchable alginate-based hydrogels was feasibly constructed by adding two-dimensional non-layered molybdenum dioxide nanosheets (2D-MoO2) to sodium alginate/polyacrylamide mixture and then soaking into the calcium chloride solution. The introduction of 2D-MoO2 renders the hydrogels excellent photothermal properties and controllable photomechanical deformation under near-infrared irradiation, while maintaining high transparency (~60 %).The calcium ions give the hydrogel excellent mechanics, conductivity, and freezing tolerance concurrently. The transparent hydrogel-based sensor shows wide sensing range (0-1800 %) and cycling stability in detecting deformations and real-time human motions even in harsh environments. Therefore, this work provides a new route for generating transparent multifunctional hydrogels towards the applications of remote actuation and strain sensing.
Smart sensing hydrogel actuators conferred by MXene gradient arrangement

Abstract:Smart sensing and excellent actuation abilities of natural organisms have driven scientists to develop bionic soft-bodied robots. However, most conventional robots suffer from poor electrical conductivity, limiting their application in real-time sensing and actuation. Here, we report a novel strategy to enhance the electrical conductivity of hydrogels that integrated actuation and strain-sensing functions for bioinspired self-sensing soft actuators. Conductive hydrogels were synthesized in situ by copolymerizing MXene nanosheets with thermosensitive N-isopropylacrylamide and acrylamide under a direct current electric field. The resulting hydrogels exhibited high electrical conductivity (2.11 mS/cm), good sensitivity with a gauge factor of 4.79 and long-term stability. The developed hydrogels demonstrated remarkable capabilities in detecting human motions at subtle strains such as facial expressions and large strains such as knee bending. Additionally, the hydrogel electrode patch was capable of monitoring physiological signals. Furthermore, the developed hydrogel showed good thermally induced actuation effects when the temperature was higher than 30 °C. Overall, this work provided new insights for the design of sensory materials with integrated self-sensing and actuation capabilities, which would pave the way for the development of high-performance conductive soft materials for intelligent soft robots and automated machinery.
Programming Hydrogen Bonds for Reversible Elastic-Plastic Phase Transition in a Conductive Stretchable Hydrogel Actuator with Rapid Ultra-High-Density Energy Conversion and Multiple Sensory Properties

Abstract:Smart hydrogels have recently garnered significant attention in the fields of actuators, human-machine interaction, and soft robotics. However, when constructing large-scale actuated systems, they usually exhibit limited actuation forces (≈2 kPa) and actuation speeds. Drawing inspiration from hairspring energy conversion mechanism, an elasticity-plasticity-controllable composite hydrogel (PCTA) with robust contraction capabilities is developed. By precisely manipulating intermolecular and intramolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions, the material's elasticity and plasticity can be programmed to facilitate efficient energy storage and release. The proposed mechanism enables rapid generation of high contraction forces (900 kPa) at ultra-high working densities (0.96 MJ m-3). Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that modifications in the number and nature of hydrogen bonds lead to a distinct elastic-plastic transition in hydrogels. Furthermore, the conductive PCTA hydrogel exhibits multimodal sensing capabilities including stretchable strain sensing with a wide sensing range (1-200%), fast response time (180 ms), and excellent linearity of the output signal. Moreover, it demonstrates exceptional temperature and humidity sensing capabilities with high detection accuracy. The strong actuation power and real-time sensory feedback from the composite hydrogels are expected to inspire novel flexible driving materials and intelligent sensing systems.

Abstract:Stimulus-responsive hydrogels are of great significance in soft robotics, wearable electronic devices, and sensors. Near-infrared (NIR) light is considered an ideal stimulus as it can trigger the response behaviour remotely and precisely. In this work, a smart flexible stimuli-responsive hydrogel with excellent photothermal property and decent conductivity are prepared by incorporating MXene nanosheets into the physically cross-linked PNIPAM hydrogel matrix. Because of outstanding photothermal effect and dispersion of MXene, the composite hydrogel exhibits rapid photothermal responsiveness and excellent photothermal stability under the NIR irradiation. Furthermore, the anisotropic bilayer hydrogel actuator shows fast and controllable light-driven bending behavior, which can be used as a light-controlled soft manipulator. Meanwhile, the hydrogel sensor exhibits cycling stability and good durability in detecting various deformation and real-time human activities. Therefore, the present study involving the fabrication of MXene nanocomposite hydrogels for potential applications in remotely controlled actuator and wearable electronic device provides a new method for the development of photothermal responsive conductive hydrogels.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Humans possess manual dexterity, motor skills, and other physical abilities that rely on feedback provided by the somatosensory system. Herein, a method is reported for creating soft somatosensitive actuators (SSAs) via embedded 3D printing, which are innervated with multiple conductive features that simultaneously enable haptic, proprioceptive, and thermoceptive sensing. This novel manufacturing approach enables the seamless integration of multiple ionically conductive and fluidic features within elastomeric matrices to produce SSAs with the desired bioinspired sensing and actuation capabilities. Each printed sensor is composed of an ionically conductive gel that exhibits both long-term stability and hysteresis-free performance. As an exemplar, multiple SSAs are combined into a soft robotic gripper that provides proprioceptive and haptic feedback via embedded curvature, inflation, and contact sensors, including deep and fine touch contact sensors. The multimaterial manufacturing platform enables complex sensing motifs to be easily integrated into soft actuating systems, which is a necessary step toward closed-loop feedback control of soft robots, machines, and haptic devices.

Abstract:Skin-like body sensors have important applications in soft-bodied intelligent robots, electronic skins, and medical health monitoring. Accurate sensing of pressure and temperature are two core elements of skin-like sensors that mimic skins. Skin-like sensors convert sensed external stimuli such as pressure and temperature into electrical signals, enabling visual monitoring of external environmental stimuli. However, there are very limited reports on hydrogels-based and dual stimuli-responsive (strain/temperature) sensors. To this end, we report a highly flexible strain/temperature dual stimuli-responsive sensor based on poly(acrylamide) (PAAM) hydrogels. Our prepared conductive ionic hydrogels are endowed with the ability to undergo phase changes at different temperatures by introducing inexpensive and stable sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) thermotropic phase-change units, which can turn from opaque to transparent within 10 s when temperature is increased, and to opaque again when temperature is decreased. In this study, we have succeeded in producing a dual-responsive multifunctional ionic conductive hydrogel (SN-PAAM) that is responsive to temperature/strain dual stimuli and has excellent mechanical properties: high tensile strength (581 kPa), extra long elongation (1,836%), high sensitivity (GF = 1.62 to 2.46), and short response time (120 to 130 ms). To the best of our knowledge, these combined functions are not achievable with conventional strategies. Therefore, the hydrogels developed in this research could have good prospects for different applications such as flexible wearable devices, skin-like sensors, visualization of bionic skins, dual response interactive devices, and in the field of anti-counterfeiting and encryption.

Abstract:Human skin contains highly specialized deformation receptors that allow us to intuitively and effortlessly interpret our surroundings. These sensors help us to localize touch and determine the degree of contact pressure. In addition, the innate understanding of our own body posture is also due to these mechanoreceptors. This work demonstrates a synthetic sensory–motor analog that can be 3D printed, using direct ink writing (DIW) onto soft, fluidic elastomer actuators (FEAs). This 3D printing technique uses two inks–one that is an ionically conductive hydrogel and another that is an electrically insulating silicone–which is then patterned and photopolymerized into stretchable capacitive sensors. In this paper, these sensors are used to enable tactile sensing and kinesthetic feedback in a pneumatically actuated haptic device. This capacitive skin enabled the device to detect a compressive force from a finger press of ∼ 2 N, and an internal pressurization of as low as ∼ 10 kPa.
Flexible Triboelectric Sensor based on Catalyst‐Diffusion Self‐Encapsulated Conductive Liquid‐Metal‐Silicone Ink for Somatosensory Soft Robotic System

Abstract:Combined with an embedded 3D printing process, a conductive liquid‐metal‐silicone ink with a catalyst diffusion effect is proposed to prepare self‐encapsulated stretchable conductors with excellent conductivity. The inks are further printed in a support matrix according to specified paths, and TENG‐based wearable flexible sensors and somatosensory soft robotic grippers with complex cavity structures are designed and successfully manufactured in one step. The combination of fluidity and metallic conductivity has attracted considerable attention to liquid metal (LM), but its development remains challenging due to enormous surface tension. Here, vinyl‐terminated silicone oil and platinum catalyst are added to LM to reduce its surface tension, which develops a special type of liquid‐metal‐silicone (LMS) ink with a catalyst diffusion effect. Combined with an embedded three‐dimentional (3D) printing method, the LMS ink is printed on the support matrix, and the catalyst diffuses outward along the print path to cure the silicone around it, directly constructing self‐encapsulated conductive composites with excellent conductivity and self‐encapsulated flexible tactile sensors based on triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG). The sensor exhibits excellent sensitivity (0.308 V kPa−1), high linearity (≈0.99), and good durability (over 10 000 cycles). Furthermore, when used in flexible wearable electronics, the sensor demonstrates a good performance with an accuracy of ≈96% in classifying different human postures using a convolutional neural network. Finally, through embedded 3D printing with LMS ink and silicone ink, a somatosensory soft robotic gripper with complex cavity structures is designed and manufactured in one step, achieving the all‐in‐one integration of sensors and actuators. This study shows great application potential in flexible electronics and soft robotic systems.

Abstract:A stretchable conductive Janus hydrogel with controllable porous structures is developed for highly sensitive monitoring of human motion. The Janus porous structure of the hydrogel is fabricated using patterned single‐layer droplets produced by microfluidics as pore‐forming templates. The hydrogel possess dual‐crosslinked polymeric networks to achieve good stretchability (480%), which allows fully cover the stretching range of human skin (usually <200%). Meanwhile, the hydrogel possess controllable Janus porous structures with local strain/stress enhancement to achieve high sensitivity (GF = 5.2) for strain‐sensing. The Janus hydrogel shows fast response for stretching (175 ms) and recovery (170 ms), and good durability (200 cycles at 50% strain). The conductive Janus hydrogel with high sensitivity and good mechanical properties are promising for developing soft wearable sensors in fields such as human health monitoring and human motion detection.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels hold great promises in wearable soft electronics. However, the weak mechanical properties, low sensitivity and the absence of multifunctionalities (e.g., self-healing, self-adhesive, etc.) of the conventional conductive hydrogels limit their applications. Thus, developing multifunctional hydrogels may address some of these technical issues. In this work, a multifunctional conductive hydrogel strain sensor is fabricated by incorporating a conductive polymer Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) into a mechanically robust poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/ poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) double network (DN) hydrogel. The as-prepared hydrogel sensor could span a wide spectrum of mechanical properties by simply tuning the polymer composition and the number of freezing-thawing cycles. In addition, the dynamic hydrogen bonding interactions endow the hydrogel sensor with self-healing property and reversible adhesiveness on diverse substrates. Moreover, the hydrogel sensor shows high sensitivity (Gauge Factor from 2.21 to 3.82) and can precisely detect some subtle human motions (e.g., pulse and vocal cord vibration). This work provides useful insights into the development of conductive hydrogel-based wearable soft electronics.

Abstract:Organisms in nature, from plants, insects to mammals, have anisotropic and regularly arranged tissue structures, which are key to rapid and precise response to environmental stimuli. In this study, nature-inspired anisotropic hydrogel actuators are fabricated by 4D printing thermo-responsive composites of short carbon fibers (SCFs) and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM). The SCFs could be well aligned and programmed in hydrogel matrix, resulting in diverse precisely controlled anisotropic structures. The intrinsic anisotropy causes unbalanced swelling and shrinking upon thermo-stimulation, leading to reversible biomimetic shape morphing. Finite element analysis (FEA) simulations are used to estimate the internal anisotropic stress distribution and structure evolution. Biomimetic anisotropic butterfly-like, flytrap-like and starfish-like hydrogel actuators are fabricated by 4D printing. On the other hand, the anisotropic SCFs/PNIPAM hydrogels are conductive and could be used as wearable strain sensors with high sensitivity. The conductive anisotropic hydrogels can generate sensing signals when they are motivated by temperature changes. This self-monitoring soft actuator is promising for the development of soft robots with stimulation-sensing-actuation feedback loop, which has broad application prospects in artificial intelligent devices.

Abstract:Soft robots and devices exploit deformable materials that are capable of changes in shape to allow conformable physical contact for controlled manipulation. While the use of embedded sensors in soft actuation systems is gaining increasing interest, there are limited examples where the body of the actuator or robot is able to act as the sensing element. In addition, the conventional feedforward control method is widely used for the design of a controller, resulting in imprecise position control from a sensory input. In this work, we fabricate a soft self-sensing finger actuator using flexible carbon fibre-based piezoresistive composites to achieve an inherent sensing functionality and design a dual-closed-loop control system for precise actuator position control. The resistance change of the actuator body was used to monitor deformation and fed back to the motion controller. The experimental and simulated results demonstrated the effectiveness, robustness and good controllability of the soft finger actuator. Our work explores the emerging influence of inherently piezoresistive soft actuators to address the challenges of self-sensing, actuation and control, which can benefit the design of next-generation soft robots.
