Abstract:In periods of global pandemic such as that of COVID-19 in 2020, it is important to gather useful data to evaluate the effects of ordinances and government provisions on the trend of infections within different states. The use of predictive models on the duration of the infections, or the number of deaths and recoveries can be not very effective over a long period of time. In a complex system, such as the network of human relationships that conveys the infections, everything can change within a few days or even hours following absolutely unpredictable social events that can lead to the emergence of new epidemic outbreaks. In these situations, it is much more important to analyze data to highlight any correlations between these and the adopted intervention measures. This important feedback can help to contain the spread of the pandemic by providing useful information to the competent authorities. In the literature there are various methods of analyzing data on infections to facilitate the preparation of an optimal intervention strategy. Social network analysis tools are often effectively used but they raise important doubts about respecting people’s privacy. Instead, this article intends to present a new model based exclusively on the analysis of the trend of the variation rates of new cases of COVID-19 in some Italian regions in order to identify important correlations between these and the governmental measures adopted to contain the epidemic spread.
