Abstract:Sapa is one of the famous French towns for tourism in Vietnam with lots of colonial architecture, buildings and urban public spaces which are known for their great historical, cultural, aesthetic, and landscape significance. After the wars in Vietnam, the remaining architectures and public spaces, which were of significant value in terms of history, culture, aesthetics and landscape during the French colonial period in the town, have been severely degraded or arbitrarily renovated. In order to propose solutions for maintaining and promoting the ruined structures and urban public spaces of the town, this study adapted three different sets of criteria for assessment for the urban public spaces, heritage buildings and new buildings. The surveyed urban public spaces and buildings have been ranked in different classes based on their earned total average points in terms of level of usability and value. Proposed strategies adopted were developed based on lessons learnt from previous studies, which include new construction, integration, reservation and relic maintenance.
Challenges in conserving Intangible Cultural Heritage in Vietnam as seen from the Van Phuc Silk Village

Abstract:Traditional handicrafts in Ha Dong, Van Phuc, Vietnam, are the subject of this study. Crafts are portable and manufactured by craftsmen with artistic and manual talents, serving immediate demands and are traded and exchanged. They may exhibit cultural significance and symbolic values of gender, age, ethnicity, and nationalism, forming part of social and religious beliefs. Unfortunately, growing industrialization, globalisation, and commodification have limited them. The Van Phuc village is a great case study for how it survived and developed during urbanisation and industrialization. Applying qualitative research, data was collected through offline observations, interviews, and document analysis from 2017-2021. This study found that lack of basic infrastructure, less competitive products, traditional crafts style, and anxiety for future succession have inhibited the village's promotion of its values. To help stakeholders understand and safeguard the village, some implications are proposed.

Abstract:This study meticulously explores the intricate interplay between sustainable tourism and the preservation of cultural heritage, focusing on how tourism practices can foster the protection and revitalization of cultural and ethnic traditions within diverse communities in Thanh Hoa province, Vietnam (Pan et al., 2018). The research problem centers on understanding how sustainable tourism contributes to cultural preservation and the economic upliftment of ethnic minority groups. The research aims to unveil how sustainable tourism can act as a catalyst for cultural exchange, economic development, and the safeguarding of natural and cultural assets, with a particular emphasis on the involvement and empowerment of ethnic minority communities in the tourism development process (Datta et al., 2015). Employing multivariate linear regression as its primary research method, the study rigorously analyzes case studies to draw correlations between sustainable tourism activities and their impacts on cultural preservation. The main findings reveal that sustainable tourism practices significantly contribute to protecting cultural heritage, enhancing community participation, and fostering responsible tourism policies. These practices not only support the economic sustainability of ethnic minority groups but also ensure the conservation of their unique cultural identities. The implications of this research are profound, offering valuable insights for policymakers and tourism practitioners aiming to harmonize cultural heritage conservation with community well-being. By advocating for the integration of community perspectives into tourism planning and policy formulation, this study underscores the potential of sustainable tourism to serve as a powerful tool for cultural and economic revitalization, highlighting its importance in the broader context of cultural heritage management and sustainable development (Gould, 2018).

Utilizing Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) for analysis, it evaluates how community involvement aids in the maintenance and protection of tangible and intangible heritage aspects. Findings reveal substantial improvements in conservation outcomes due to active community participation, highlighting the critical role of local communities in preserving heritage integrity and cultural values. This emphasizes the necessity of grassroots involvement for lasting cultural legacy preservation. Furthermore, the study stresses the importance of incorporating indigenous knowledge and traditions into conservation strategies to ensure culturally relevant and sustainable outcomes. Although based in Vietnam, the implications of this research are global, advocating for inclusive, community-centric conservation practices that emphasize environmental sustainability and cultural significance. Abstract:Preserving traditional culture and preserving the intangible cultural assets of humanity is a matter of concern to almost every country in the world. Japan is one of the countries that, despite having a developed economy, still preserves almost intact many traditional cultural values of the nation, including festivals. The article explores the current status of festival conservation in Japan by analyzing a number of examples such as Obon, Gion, Daimokute, fire festivals, etc., at the same time, points out the remaining problems in conservation festivals such as: the impact of economic development towards for the change of festivals, the problem of lack of successors, funding for conservation and organization of the festival. In addition, the author also points out the policies that Japan has applied to preserve traditional festivals such as: promulgating relevant policies, providing budget and financial support, providing conservation methods, promoting advertising, promoting the festival, etc..., then propose some suggestions for Vietnam in this field.

Abstract:The residential community has a close relationship and strong interaction with local cultural heritages. However, in the process of preserving and exploiting cultural heritages, the proactive role of residents in participating in heritage management has not been promoted as the main stakeholders. The study was conducted to reconsider the specific roles of local communities in cultural heritage management and participation in developing sustainable cultural heritage tourism. At the same time, the study analyzes several particular cases relating to community participation in cultural heritage development projects around the world. Based on access and analysis of secondary data sources, the findings show that there has been a shift in recognizing the role of residents in heritage management on the government and a sense of proactive participation of residents from the benefits of tourism. However, there are still many problems regarding the level of participation, conflicts in the participation process and participation mechanisms to ensure sustainable management and exploitation of cultural heritage.

Abstract:The Ta Oi people in Thua Thien-Hue province continue to preserve and promote numerous unique indigenous music genres. However, these invaluable cultural heritages are at risk of vanishing from their cultural life in the future if there is no comprehensive and scientifically backed protection policy in place. My first-hand fieldwork and surveys have demonstrated that folk music is integral to the Ta Oi people’s way of life, being practiced at every stage of their lives, in significant cultural events within the community, and during religious rituals. Music serves as a distinct language, fostering connections among individuals, between people, and between people and spirits within specific cultural spaces, thereby forming a remarkably distinctive cultural mosaic among the Ta Oi people. Utilizing qualitative research methods, this study focuses on conducting in-depth interviews with skilled local artisans and participating in folk music performances within the Ta Oi community. The findings of the study reveal that significant community events play a crucial role in the practice, preservation, and maintenance of the Ta Oi people’s traditional musical culture. The study asserts that preserving folk music within the cultural life of the community serves as the most effective approach to safeguarding the indigenous folk art of each distinct community. This progression would enable the maintenance of the musical heritage of each ethnic group within contemporary society. Such endeavors necessitate support from the government, researchers, and local authorities.

Abstract:Banh Phchum Ban, Sen Đôn Ta (Ancestors’ Day) has been a symbol of culture, belief, and spirituality, and is thepoint of convergence of Khmer culture. The holiday has gone deeply into the consciousness of the community, with an important role and significance that contributes to educating people in moral standards, such as being environmentally aware, ancestor worship and respecting those who have contributed to the Phum Sroc, to the nation and particularly expressing gratitude to the monks who act as the bridge between religion and state. This article applies perspectives, in accordance to the theory of functions (Functionalism) of the Malnowski, and studies the festival, which is in the process of modernization, with theories built on Ronald Inghart and Waye E. Baker’s methodologies. This research was conducted through fieldwork activities, observations, direct participation in some localities, and collecting and synthesizing literature about the festival made by cultural, philosophical and religious writers. A comparison and analysis assessment on holiday traditions and themodern world has recorded these changes to the festival in present-day life.

Abstract:This article examines the efforts and challenges associated with promoting the values of historical and cultural relics in Can Tho City, focusing on their integration into tourism development. Can Tho, a centrally administered city in the Mekong Delta, possesses a rich cultural heritage that includes numerous historical relics and sites of revolutionary significance. These tangible cultural assets are pivotal for the city's tourism potential, serving as critical attractions for domestic and international tourists. The article explores the various initiatives local authorities undertake, including policy implementation, investment in infrastructure, and community engagement, to enhance the preservation and promotion of these cultural sites. It also addresses the limitations, such as inadequate funding, insufficient infrastructure, and the uneven awareness of heritage value among stakeholders. Recommendations are provided for improving the management and promotion of Can Tho's cultural heritage, emphasizing the need for better coordination among local agencies, increased investment, and the development of professional tour guide services. The article concludes that while significant progress has been made, further efforts are needed to realize the potential of Can Tho's cultural heritage in contributing to sustainable tourism and economic development.

Abstract:This article delves into the repercussions of cultural interference and acculturation by focusing on the traditional culture of Vietnam’s K’Ho ethnic group. Drawing from both quantitative and qualitative data collected in Lac Duong town and Ta Nung commune (in Dalat city), Lam Dong province, the authors apply the social change theory to analyze pivotal K’Ho festivals. The investigation reveals a diminishing presence of festivals such as the New Rice celebration, buffalo stabbing, and gong festivals. This decline is linked to transformations in the agricultural economy and heightened awareness within the K’Ho community. Consequently, these shifts contributed to the development of cultural models within the K’Ho community, aligning with contemporary social development practices. This study sheds light on the intricate interplay between cultural preservation, economic shifts, and evolving societal consciousness among the K’Ho people.

Abstract:Purpose Through a case study of the Po Klaong Girai temple in Vietnam, this paper explores how indigenous community perceive tourism benefit sharing (TBS) associated with their cultural tourism at sacred living-heritage sites and how this TBS enhances the equality and inclusion for indigenous community in the context of tourism in Vietnam. Design/methodology/approach This study employed ethnographic fieldwork and semi-structured interviews with 35 indigenous Cham priests directly associated with managing and preserving the Po Klaong Girai temple. Findings This research found that Cham community perceive inequality and exclusivity on tourism benefit sharing at this religious site. While Cham Ahier priests face economic barriers in providing these services to the community, annual tourism revenue is allocated to local government budgets. Such economic pressure forces the priests to seek alternative economic avenues to support their families at the expense of their traditional commitments to communal, cultural and religious activities, significantly impacting sustainable heritage conservation. This has led to strained relations between the local community and local authorities. Practical implications This research provides evidence to improve living heritage management practices by proposing tourism development policies for equality and inclusion among stakeholders, especially minorities and disadvantaged groups. This can be an experiential and necessary lesson for "dealing" with sustainable heritage management in heritage living sites in other ethnic minority areas in Vietnam and globally. Originality/value The findings from this study address the knowledge gap on equitable revenue sharing in heritage tourism, where financial benefits from the commodification of minority cultures should be used to support local communities and the custodians of indigenous heritage.

Abstract:In the face of increasing pressures of development towards industrialization and modernization, Hoi An ancient town, needs to add more research to preserve and sustainably promote the value of its cultural heritage. However, there are few studies on cultural sustainability in Hoi An ancient house architecture. Therefore, one of the research objectives of this article is to fill this gap by enhancing current knowledge in the field. The structure of this article explains the relationship between heritage value and ancient heritage houses, as well as the place and role of cultural sustainability in the overall framework of sustainable development. An in-depth literature analysis was conducted following a survey of five ancient houses in Hoi An to achieve these goals. PRESERVING AND EXHIBITING INTANGIBLE CULTURAL HERITAGE VIA VIRTUAL MUSEUM: A CASE STUDY OF THE HUNGRY GHOSTS FESTIVAL IN HONG KONG

Abstract:Abstract. This paper documents and reflects on the process of preserving and presenting the ICH in the form of a virtual museum by taking the case study of a China’s national-grade intangible cultural heritage – the Hungry Ghosts Festival organized by the Chaozhou community in Hong Kong. The documentation, exhibition and interpretation in this virtual museum adopt a participatory bottom-up approach, in which the voices of the local organizers and participants are highlighted, and personal anecdotes are played up. The virtual museum intends to aggregate and exhibit all the elements of this ICH in one virtual space, including its origins and development, the tangible artefacts it entails, its dynamic and fluidic nature (e.g., ambiance, performance, communal spirits), and its multiple layers of meanings. As the Hungry Ghosts Festival celebration lasts merely a matter of days each year at a particular place for a local community, this virtual museum enables a wider public to access this festival at any time, in any place and from different dimensions. This paper shows how the virtual museum presents the aforementioned facets of the ICH through different display techniques and evaluates their usefulness, including (1) traditional text and image panels, (2) 3D reconstructed scene and models, and (3) 360-degree video. This is significantly different from the earlier work, which mainly focused on the accuracy of re-enacting the given form of intangible cultural heritage, such as performance and craftsmanship in a virtual environment, or a particular creative presentation by professional performers and elites with specific meanings.
Urban Development and Fishing Livelihoods in the Museum: Nostalgia and Discontent in Central Vietnam

Abstract:This article explores how the topics of fishing and urban development are addressed in a Vietnamese social history museum. Drawing on a project taking place in the Museum of Danang, it describes the way the museum represented the voices of a displaced fishing community who were moved from traditional fishing huts on the riverside to a social housing complex as part of Danang’s urban development plan in the 2000s. Capturing the impact of the community’s relocation on their fishing livelihoods through an exhibition of objects, photographs and texts, the article reveals ways in which nostalgia is recruited to make social, political and moral commentary on urban equality and livelihood change in a rapidly developing city. Methodologically, the project explored the limits of critical representation in an authoritarian state and how nostalgia can be understood as a subtle call for ethical action.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to determine the values of Belief in worshiping ancestors in the family in order to educating the traditional cultural values of Vietnam in the context of globalization and international economic integration. To this end, this article studies ancient documents and research works of some reputable researchers on Vietnamese beliefs and culture; in-depth interviews (IDI) and focus groups discussion (FGD) were conducted to obtain genuine comprehension of Vietnamese folk belief activities. The data were evaluated using content analysis. This article reported on four aspects of problems: (i) Belief in the immortality of ancestor’s souls; the blessing as well as the punishment of the ancestors’ souls to their descendants; (ii) Education about the sense of origin; (iii) Education on the ethics of gratitude; (iv) Education filial piety in daily life. This study helps understand the values of ancestor worship in the family is the basis for good relationships in the family, relatives, and clan; good behavior keeps people with people in society; thereby educating the good values of Vietnam’s traditional culture in the context of globalization; international economic integration. This study can be used for teaching in the Vietnam education system; contribute to the dissemination of traditional cultural values of Vietnam; shed more light on Vietnam’s value systems; serve as a basis for planning and formulating policies to develop an advanced Vietnamese culture imbued with national identity.

Abstract:Research on motivations and perceptions of tourists at a cultural heritage site is not rare but the personal and aesthetic context of visitors’ experiences have been neglected in much of the literature on cultural tourist attraction management. Using qualitative methods, this study explores the nature of demand for heritage tourism with particular attention to the appreciation gained by visitors of indigenous Cham culture, its arts of exotic sculptures, and its monuments and architecture. These dimensions describe an evolutionary experience of place that moves some tourists from a position of relatively shallow interest to an almost spiritual position due in some part to the role of the aesthetic that rises from landscape and dance.

Abstract:This paper seeks to explore the sustainable development of contemporary Chinese villages by taking Nalu Village in China as a case study. Ethnographic in-depth interviews and observations are used to investigate the transformation of the rich history and heritage in the village. The research and analyses are informed by a multi-dimensional framework of sustainable development. The research finds that the state’s naming the village as a “Chinese Traditional Village” has promoted local rural tourism, which plays an important role in improving the visibility of the village, increases the income of the villagers, and enhances a stronger sense of attachment and satisfaction of the villagers. The pride of the villagers in turn makes them cherish the history of their village. This paper argues that this pride becomes the capital or incentive for the villagers to sustain its continuity.

Abstract:Chol Chnam Thmay is one of the typical traditional festivals of Khmer people living in Loc Ninh in the Southeastern region of Vietnam as well as in the Mekong Delta in the Southwestern region of Vietnam and in some other Southeast Asian countries. Similar to Khmer people in other regions, festivals of Khmer people in Loc Ninh are also formed and integrated from three cultural lines: folk beliefs, Brahminism, and Buddhism. However, due to the peculiarities of natural conditions, and historical and social circumstances, Khmer people’s festivals in Loc Ninh have specific cultural features, which have contributed to the formation and development of the Khmer ethnic identity in Loc Ninh as well as the cultural identity of the Southeastern region of Vietnam. Based on Hobsbawm's theoretical approach to “Traditional Creativity”, combining Ethnographic/Anthropological field methods, the research results show that Chol Chnam Thmay festival of the Khmer people in Loc Ninh has had a lot of changes. The the changes of the festival is the consequence of the “Traditional Creativity” process in the restoration and practice of the Khmer community's festival. In addition to the impact of the natural environment, and historical and social circumstances, these changes are also affected by cultural exchange factors, globalization, integration, and especially, impacts from the policies on socio-economic and cultural development of the Vietnamese Communist Party and State implemented in localities in the Southeastern region of Vietnam at present.

Abstract:Drawing on the social practice theory, theory of planned behavior, social contagion theory, and social exchange theory, this study focused on tourist behaviors affecting tourism social sustainability and their drivers. Besides its unique contribution to distinguishing positive behaviors from negative ones, this study is the first exploring tourism social sustainability in remote communities in Vietnam, an emerging country and focusing on domestic tourists. The study reveals that tourists' knowledge about tourism social sustainability is not only the safeguard against conducting improper behaviors. Behaviors negatively impacting tourism social sustainability can be instigated by crowd, pampering of one's convenience, and superiority feeling. Furthermore, inappropriate behaviors can be nurtured by the community and service providers. This study also indicates a mixed finding regarding the role of tour operators and tour guides in enforcing the code of conduct and regulations; however, both leader and members of the community can play a critical role in promoting socially sustainable tourist behaviors.
