Abstract:This study aimed to determine the effect of the implementation of two learning models, discovery learning and Reading to Learn on scientific literacy skills and student learning outcomes on the excretory system material. This research was conducted in a Junior High School in the city of Malang involving 29 students of 8th grade. This study used pre-experimental research design (one group pretest-posttest design). Data were collected through pretest, posttest, and worksheet questions. Data were analyzed using non-parametric statistical tests (Wilcoxon test), n-gain and d-effect size. The findings revealed that there was an increase in scientific literacy skills and student learning outcomes as indicated by the n gain of 0.58 (upper medium) and 0.77 (high). The use of discovery learning and Reading to Learn models has been shown to have a strong positive/effective impact on improving students' learning outcomes and scientific literacy skills, as shown by the d effect size values of 2.13 and 3.28, which fall into the large effect category

Abstract:Environmental literacy is one of the keys to support the success of sustainable development goals (SDGs). This research aims to develop an inquiry e-module with an ethno-STEM approach to the concept of volatile aromatic compounds. The research subjects involved 46 students in the chemistry education study program who took the course on organic chemistry of natural substances. Data collection was carried out using an environmental literacy questionnaire covering four domains (knowledge, cognitive skills, attitudes and behavior). The results showed that the validity of e-modules in terms of material and media was 82.5% and 93.25%, respectively, which were categorized as very valid. The results of the environmental literacy test indicate that the average scores for knowledge, attitude, cognitive skills, and behavior were 45.91, 46.46, 51.32, and 53.24. All four domains fall within the high category. The inquiry e-module with an ethno-STEM approach is very suitable for developing environmental literacy skills.

Abstract:This study aims to develop digital science teaching materials with Ethno-STEM content to train elementary students' scientific literacy. The research method used is the ADDIE Research and Development (R&D) model (Analyze, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation). The results of the feasibility of digital science teaching materials obtained a percentage of 92.42% with very feasible criteria. The effectiveness of digital science teaching materials was declared effective by the results of the paired t-test which showed that there was an average difference in the pretest and posttest data, and the n-gain results scored 0.40 with the criteria of being effective. The results of the student response questionnaire after the learning process obtained a percentage of 90.35%; as well as the results of the teacher's response questionnaire after the learning process obtained a percentage of 90.62%. The results of student and teacher responses obtained very positive criteria. The conclusions of this study are that digital science teaching materials with Ethno-STEM content are effective in training scientific literacy for grade IV elementary school students.

Abstract:This research investigates the impact of science teaching methods and digital literacy on the development of science literacy among junior high school students in Indonesia. A quantitative analysis employing structural equation modeling (SEM-PLS) was conducted on a sample of 150 students. Descriptive statistics revealed moderate science literacy levels, preferences for hands-on experiments, and a high proficiency in digital literacy. SEM-PLS results demonstrated significant positive relationships between science teaching methods, digital literacy, and science literacy. The bootstrapping analysis confirmed these relationships, emphasizing the importance of both factors in shaping science literacy outcomes. The model exhibited a strong fit, and coefficients indicated substantial explanatory and predictive power for Developing Science Literacy. These findings contribute to the understanding of effective educational strategies for science literacy in the Indonesian context.
Project-based learning on ethnoscience setting to improve students’ scientific literacy

Abstract:Scientific literacy is still to be a problem for students worldwide. Even though this competency is very important for students to take an important role in science, technology and society advancement. This study has analyzed effect of the project-based learning by using ethnoscience learning sources of Banjarese traditional food on students' scientific literacy. By using Pre-test-Post-test Nonequivalent Control Group Design, the study involved 35 and 33 senior high school students as a control and an experimental group respectively. The experimental group applied project-based learning, while, the control group used expository learning strategy. This study concluded that students' scientific literacy of experimental group was significantly higher than the control group one. The students' scientific literacy in both classes increased from the low to high categories. It needs to be explored more broadly other elements of ethnoscience to improve the meaningful learning and students' scientific literacy.

Abstract:Climate change is a global issue that impacts many people around the world. In recent years, several areas in South Sumatra have experienced the uneven impacts of climate change, especially forest fires and drought. Reflecting on the environmental problems that occur, this is closely related to the behavior of the community. Therefore, climate change education must be provided from the beginning, especially to young learners. This research, conducted at SD IT Harapan Mulia Palembang, aims to explore the potential of bilingual picture books in fostering a sense of responsibility and concern for the environment among young learners. By introducing climate change concepts in an accessible and relevant way, this study seeks to empower children to become advocates for environmental sustainability in their communities. Additionally, it aims to improve language skills and reading interest among young learners. This research involved 24 young sixth grade elementary school students, a stakeholder, and two English teachers through a mixed methods approach, questionnaires and semi-structured interviews.The findings of this research reveal the enthusiasm of young learners in using bilingual picture books about climate change in the classroom. Young learners have their own characteristics of books to use, some of which are based on themes and illustrations, story content, use of two languages, number of pages, and interactive elements such as crossword puzzles or short exercises that can hone their language skills. Therefore, researchers suggest that bilingual picture books can be developed and applied as effective and attractive learning media for young learners in English Language Teaching class.Keywords: climate change education; English for Young Learners; bilingual picturebooks; English language teaching

Abstract:Scientific literacy is one of the basic skills to compete in an increasingly competitive life. Nevertheless, Indonesian students continue to have low levels of scientific literacy. This study aims to determine the difference in students' scientific literacy and cognitive learning outcomes in the experimental and control classes and to find students' responses to the ethnoscience-based PjBL model in learning. This quasi-experimental research applies a non-equivalent control group design. The samples were eleventh-grade science students at SMA Negeri 2 Banjarmasin in the even semester of the 2021/2022 academic year. The data were collected using test and non-test methods. The instruments were scientific literacy and cognitive learning tests and a response questionnaire as a non-test instrument. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential analysis. The results showed significant differences in scientific literacy and cognitive learning outcomes between students in the experimental and control classes. The ethnoscience-based PjBL model gets a very good response. This study concludes that implementing the ethnoscience-based PjBL model can improve students' scientific literacy and cognitive learning outcomes. This study contributes to chemistry learning by improving scientific literacy and learning outcomes through the ethnoscience-based PjBL model.

Abstract:Science literacy skills in Indonesia are still relatively low. This study aims to analyze the need to develop learning media, especially digital storybooks, to improve the science literacy of fourth-grade elementary school students. The analysis involves literature studies, field studies with teacher interviews, and evaluating learners' science literacy abilities. The results of the analysis showed variations in learners' learning styles (visual, auditory, kinesthetic) and low science literacy needs. The teacher stated that the independent curriculum is used with learning activities that have applied science literacy, but it is still limited. The science literacy ability of students was recorded to be low, with an average percentage of 43.53%. Teachers see the need for innovation through digital learning media, especially picture storybooks, to increase students' interest and understanding of science material. Based on these findings, the development of digital storybooks can be an effective solution to improve the science literacy of fourth-grade students. It is hoped that implementing this media will help strengthen science literacy skills and improve the understanding of scientific concepts in everyday life. This research contributes to the field by providing evidence-based recommendations for integrating digital storybooks into the curriculum, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of science education in primary schools.

Abstract:Learning media has a significant role in an effort to help abstract concepts so that students more easily understand these concepts. However, many teachers have difficulty in developing learning media. This study aims to develop learning media in the form of picture storybooks with a TheoAnthropoEco-centric approach that is feasible and practical for use by elementary school students. This study uses a research and development type that refers to the development stage of Borg Gall. The data was obtained using a product feasibility validation questionnaire and a teacher and student response questionnaire. The subjects of this research are media experts, material experts, linguists, class teachers and fourth-grade students of madrasah ibtidaiyah. The determination of research subjects is done by purposive sampling technique. Descriptive statistical techniques analyzed the data obtained in this study. The results showed that the picture book with the TheoAnthropoEco-centric approach developed in this study was feasible and practical for use by elementary school students. This is evidenced by the feasibility test results, which show the developed media is in the "Very Good" category. On the other hand, the results of the practicality test also show that the product developed in this study is in the "Very Good" category. Therefore, picture story books with a TheoAnthropoEco-centric approach can be used as a medium of learning at the elementary school level.
The Effectiveness of Development Digital Picture Story Books to Improve Science Learning Outcomes on 5th Grade Elementary School Students

Abstract:Elementary school students need direct experience and learning objects that can drive the pace of their cognitive development. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the development of digital picture storybooks integrated with videos and worksheets on the learning outcomes of elementary school students. The development model used in this research is ADDIE (Analyze, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluate). This study involved fifth-grade students at SDN 3 Krack as research subjects. Based on the results of the material valiator and media validation test, scores of 84.44% and 80% were obtained in the appropriate category. The product was tested on a small scale and obtained an average pre-test science learning result of 50.66 and a post-test of 72.33 with an n-gain of 0.43 in the medium category, and the results of the t-test obtained count 20.05 ≥ t-table 2.306. In the large-scale trial, the average pre-test in science learning outcomes was 60.5 and 76.33 in the post-test with an n-gain of 0.40 in the medium category, and the t-test obtained tcount 31.25 ≥ ttable 2.069. The researcher concluded that the developed digital picture storybooks were effective in improving the science learning outcomes of elementary school students. Abstract:Currently the teaching materials used by teachers do not pay attention to the condition of students and their environment, because in general teachers still use conventional teaching materials as a guide in learning. This makes teachers very dependent on conventional teaching materials. This study aims to determine the quality of E-book teaching materials with a scientific inquiry approach in strengthening scientific literacy for elementary school students. This type of research is research and development (Research and Development) using the development model developed by Borg and Gall, and only taken 6 out of 10 overall stages. The subjects in this study were fourth grade elementary school students. The data collection instrument used in this study was a Likert scale questionnaire with qualitative descriptive and quantitative descriptive data analysis techniques. The results of expert validation research show that ebook teaching materials with a scientific inquiry approach can be said to be very feasible by experts according to the indicators of media feasibility, language feasibility, material feasibility. Abstract:Purpose: The objective of this research is to enhance children's enthusiasm for reading and improve their literacy abilities by introducing innovative forms of children's literacy media, such as picture books. The researchers created a visual publication specifically designed for sixth-grade students at SD Negeri 2 Pandeyan. The purpose of this book is to inspire and engage youngsters, ultimately fostering a greater enthusiasm for reading and addressing the issue of early literacy challenges. Method: The research employed a qualitative methodology. The activity is structured into three distinct stages: (1) preparation, involving observations and interviews; (2) implementation, which includes creating picture books, promoting children's literature and picture books, and engaging in group reading sessions; and (3) evaluation, which entails self-reflection and assessing the performance of the service program. Practical Applications: Seventeen grade VI children at SD Negeri 2 Pandeyan strongly valued picture books as a form of non-academic reading. Schools should maintain children's literature, particularly picture books, by offering non-academic reading resources to foster a greater interest in reading. Conclusion: Therefore, the specific early literacy crisis in Pandeyan Village can be mitigated. It is crucial to foster children's interest in reading at a young age in order to cultivate their literacy skills, which will then be sustained throughout their adult lives.

Abstract:Ethnoscience is a learning approach related the actual knowledge of the community to scientific knowledge. This article aims to analyze the study of ethnosciences and their integration with science learning for the last five years published in journals indexed by SCOPUS and SINTA This is qualitative research using a literature review of 20 articles selected based on the paper classification form (PCF). Ethnoscience Learning can be related with culture and local wisdom to the local environment. The results of the paper classification form for research in the field of science, physics, chemistry, and biology. Analysis results show that ethnoscience learning can be integrated with other learning approaches and models, such as contextual, collaborative learning, context-based learning, direct instruction, problem-based learning, and project-based learning. Based on this study, the application of ethnoscience learning can train, improve, and provide a positive effect on competencies in the 21st century, such as critical thinking, creativity, generic science skill, concepts understanding, character, chemical literacy, and scientific literacy
The Effect of the Edmodo-Assisted Discovery Learning Model on Students’ Scientific Literacy Ability

Abstract:This study aims to see how the Edmodo-assisted Discovery Learning model affects students' scientific literacy skills. This study is a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest non-equivalent control group. The experimental class is taught using the Edmodo-assisted discovery learning methodology. Data were collected using a pretest and a posttest to measure the increase in students' scientific literacy skills. The experimental class received an N-Gain of 0.51, while the control class received an N-Gain of 0.29. The significance of the Independent Sample t-test on student N-Gain scores is 0.000, which is lower than 0.005, indicating that the Edmodo-assisted discovery learning model has a substantial effect on students' scientific literacy skills. The results of the questionnaire analysis also revealed that students were enthusiastic about Edmodo-assisted discovery learning. As a result, the Edmodo-assisted discovery learning model considerably impacts students' scientific literacy skills.ABSTRAK: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh model Discovery Learning berbantu Edmodo terhadap kemampuan literasi sains peserta didik. Penelitian ini merupakan kuasi eksperimen dengan desain pretest-posttest non equivalent control group design. Model discovery learning berbantu Edmodo diterapkan pada kelas eksperimen. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan pretest dan posttest untuk mengetahui peningkatan kemampuan literasi sains peserta didik. Hasil penelitian menunjukan kelas eksperimen mendapatkan N-Gain sebesar 0,51 sedangkan kelas kontrol mendapatkan N-Gain sebesar 0,29. Uji Independen Sample t-test terhadap skor N-Gain siswa menunjukkan signifikansi 0.000 0,005 yang berarti model discovery learning berbantu Edmodo berpengaruh signifikan terhadap kemampuan literasi sains peserta didik. Hasil analisis angket juga menunjukan respon yang baik dari siswa terhadap pembelajaran discovery learning berbantu edmodo. Dengan demikan dapat disimpulkan bahwa model discovery learning berbantu Edmodo berpengaruh signifikan terhadap kemampuan literasi sains peserta didik.

Abstract:This study investigates the effectiveness of the Balinese megedong-gedongan local culture-based flipbook in enhancing science literacy among students. This research aims to increase scientific literacy through flipbooks based on Balinese culture, especially megedong-gedongan. Mastery of scientific literacy opens the door to various job opportunities in science, technology, and innovation. In the digital and knowledge-based era, the demand for human resources with a strong understanding of science and technology continues to increase. Employing a classroom action research methodology, the study involved 47 Biology and Marine Affairs students at the Ganesha University of Education, Indonesia. The study used a valid and reliable scientific literacy test as an instrument. The results reveal that the Bali megedong-gedongan flipbook effectively improved science literacy. This is evidenced by a significant increase in student science test scores after using the flipbook. The data analysis results show that using megedong-gedongan Balinese culture-based flipbooks can significantly increase student scientific literacy. In addition, students more easily relate learning material to their daily lives, which impacts increasing scientific literacy. This research suggests that integrating local culture into science teaching materials can effectively increase scientific literacy among students.

Abstract:Scientific literacy can be interpreted as a person's ability to study science and then implement it in everyday life so that he is able to act wisely as a person or as a social being. This study aims to produce a picture story book learning tool that is valid, practical, and effective to improve the science literacy skills of 4th grade elementary school students. The research method used is R&D with a static-group pretest-posttest design. The sample is grade 4 students with 30 students as the control and 30 students as the experimental class. The data were collected by using validation, observation, questionnaire, and test sheets. The results showed that the scientific literacy test results had increased. The mean pretest score for the control class was 55.1 and posttest score for the control class was 67.4. The average pretest score for the experimental class was 59.07 and posttest score for the experimental class was 86.8. The N-Gain mean for the control class was 0.27 and 0.70 for the experimental class in the medium category. It can be concluded that the picture story book and supporting tools are valid, practical, effective, and can be used to train the scientific literacy skills.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of implementing a project-based learning model (PjBL) with an ethnoscience approach on the level of understanding of elementary school students' concepts and to determine student responses to the application of a Project Based Learning Model (PjBL) with an ethnoscience approach. This study was a quasi experimental research design with a post-test only group design. The samples used were two classes of fourth grade students as the experimental class consisted of 27 students and the control class consisted of 23 students. The sampling technique used was multiple purposive sampling. The data collection method used was the test and non test method. The instruments used are multiple choice post-test questions and student response questionnaires to the application of a project-based learning model (PjBL) with an ethnoscience approach. The normality and homogeneity test as the initial test showed the data were normally distributed and homogeneous. This study used the average difference test with the parametric statistical test Independent-Sample T Test. The t-test results showed that the t-count value is 2.452 t-table 2.011 so that there is a significant difference in the post-test mean of students in the experimental class and the control class. The average score of student responses to the use of the Project Based Learning Model (PjBL) model with an ethnoscience approach is 89.6 with very good criteria. The application of the Project Based Learning (PjBL) model with the ethnoscience approach affects science conceptual understanding.

Abstract:This study explores the effectiveness of using picture books as a medium to introduce English to early childhood learners at an Early Childhood Education School in South Garut, West Java, Indonesia. This qualitative research employed a case study approach, involving four sessions conducted over two weeks, with a focus on assessing the impact of picture books on English language acquisition among 20 students aged 5-6 years. The research involved a systematic introduction of English through picture books depicting various fruits. Initial observations indicated limited student engagement, but participation increased significantly in subsequent sessions, with nearly 90% of the children actively involved by the third and fourth meetings. The study highlights that picture books, as a novel and age-appropriate tool, can effectively enhance early language learning by capturing children's interest and facilitating their understanding of new vocabulary. Findings suggest that picture books not only improve language skills but also foster a positive learning environment by aligning with children's preferences for visual stimuli. The successful implementation of this method underscores the potential of picture books in early childhood education, advocating for their use in introducing English and possibly other subjects.

Abstract:Abstract The current study is a theoretical study that aims to underline the role of picture books as a serious genre of children's literature in raising children's understanding of English literature and life concepts; especially for non-English speakers. Unfortunately, most Iraqi people have developed a social phobia of learning English since childhood. This phobia is resulted from the heavy traditional reading and writing assignments as well as hard exams. Therefore, this study suggests incorporating more interesting literary material like picture books that would bring pleasure and help in raising children's love and cognition of English Language. More significantly, it calls to replace the old curriculum with a more vital one where children can interact with all their senses; visual, auditory, and kinesthetic (VAK). To make this possible, two of Eric Carle's books The Very Hungry Caterpillar and The Tiny Seed have been carefully selected according to the American and English elementary school teachers' standards for children aged 3-6 years old. Each story element was submitted to a literary analysis, including pictures, life concepts, and language that enhance children's understanding of literature. Based on Piaget's view about the importance of involving sensorimotor actions in learning to help in children's cognition development, some VAK lesson plans and activities were designed using the concept development model and Synectics strategy. The study has concluded that incorporating picture books into the school curriculum and sensorimotor activities like coloring, cutting paper, games, sounds, and music would help in raising children's understanding of English literature and life science more interactively.
