Abstract:Objectives: Physical activity is widely recommended in the treatment and management of cystic fibrosis (CF). Despite the numerous physical and psychological benefits, many young people with CF are not achieving the recommended levels of physical activity. The aim of this systematic review was to identify and synthesise available qualitative investigations exploring the motives for, barriers to and facilitators of physical activity among young people with CF. Methods: The following six electronic databases were systematically searched: Applied Social Sciences Index and Abstracts (ASSIA), CINAH, EMBASE, MEDLINE, MEDLINE-in-process, PsycINFO up to August 2019. Keywords were used to identify qualitative research that explored engagement in physical activity among young people with CF. Titles and abstracts were screened by two independent reviewers, and potentially relevant articles were retrieved in full. Articles were eligible for inclusion if they employed any qualitative method and recruited participants under the age of 24 years with CF. Risk of bias of included studies was assessed via the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme. Results were synthesised using a thematic approach. Results: Seven studies met our inclusion criteria and were included in the review. Overall, studies were of moderate to high quality. Thematic synthesis identified nine main themes that encompass motives for, barriers to and facilitators of physical activity among young people with CF. These were (1) Perceptions of physical activity. (2) Value attributed to physical activity. (3) Social influences. (4) Competing priorities. (5) Fluctuating health. (6) Normality. (7) Control beliefs. (8) Coping strategies. (9) Availability of facilities. Previous reviews have been unable to identify intervention characteristics that influence physical activity behaviour. Conclusions: This review provides detailed information on the physical (biological-clinical), psychological, social and environmental influences on physical activity behaviour, thus providing numerous targets for future interventions. This in turn could facilitate promotion of physical activity among young people with CF.
Mixed-Methods Systematic Review to Identify Facilitators and Barriers for Parents/Carers to Engage Pre-School Children in Community-Based Opportunities to Be Physically Active

Abstract:Background: Low physical activity levels in young children is a major concern. For children aged 0–5 years, engagement with opportunities to be physically active are often driven by the adults responsible for the child’s care. This systematic review explores the barriers and facilitators to parents/caregivers engaging pre-school children in community-based opportunities for physical activity, within real-world settings, or as part of an intervention study. Methods: EBSCOhost Medline, CINHAL plus, EBSCOhost SPORTDiscus, Web of Science, ProQuest, and ASSIA were systematically searched for quantitative and qualitative studies published in English between 2015 and 16 May 2022. Data extracted from 16 articles (485 parents/carers; four countries) were quality-assessed using the Mixed Methods Assessment Tool and coded and themed via thematic analysis. Results: Nine themes (eight core, one minor) were identified and conceptualised into a socio-ecological model, illustrating factors over four levels: Individual—beliefs and knowledge (and parental parameters); Interpersonal—social benefits, social network, and family dynamic; Community—organisational factors and affordability; and Built and Physical Environment—infrastructure. Discussion: The findings provide valuable insights for practitioners and policy makers who commission, design, and deliver community-based physical activity opportunities for pre-school children. Developing strategies and opportunities that seek to address the barriers identified, as well as build on the facilitators highlighted by parents, particularly factors related to infrastructure and affordability, are imperative for physical activity promotion in pre-school children. The perspectives of fathers, socioeconomic and geographical differences, and the importance parents place on physical activity promotion all need to be explored further.

Exploring Physical Activity in Children and Adolescents with Disabilities: A Bibliometric Review of Current Status, Guidelines, Perceived Barriers, and Facilitators and Future Directions

Abstract:Background: Physical activity contributes to both physiological and psychosocial benefits for children and adolescents with disabilities. However, the prevalence of physical inactivity is notably higher among disabled young people compared to their healthy peers. Despite this, there is a lack of constructed knowledge structure, evolutionary path, research hotspots, and frontiers in studies related to physical activity in young people with disabilities. Methods: The literature related to the research of physical activity in children and adolescents with disabilities was retrieved from the core collection of the Web of Science. The annual publication numbers and the timing, frequency, and centrality of the co-occurrence network with respect to journals, countries, institutions, authors, references, and keywords were analyzed. Additionally, clustering analysis and burst analysis were performed on the references and keywords. All analyses were conducted using CiteSpace. Results: A total of 1308 related articles were included. The knowledge structure of research on the physical activity of disabled children and adolescents, including annual publication numbers, influencing journals, countries, institutions, authors, references, and keywords along with their respective collaborative networks, has been constructed. Furthermore, the research foundation, current hot topics, and research frontiers have been identified by analyzing references and keywords. Conclusions: Current research hotspots include interventions, therapies, and programs aimed at enhancing specific skills, as well as addressing the satisfaction of competence to improve motivation and the effectiveness of physical activity. There is also a focus on the development of scales for quantitative studies. Future directions may be toward personalized interventions or programs to enhance physical activity levels among youth with disabilities.
Perceptions of Parents of Children With Disabilities Toward Physical Education: A Systematic Review

Abstract:Physical education (PE) has a unique opportunity in not only supporting children with disabilities but also their parents’ physical-activity knowledge and support behaviors. Therefore, the purpose of this systematic literature review was to synthesize published studies regarding parent perspectives toward physical education (PE) for their children with disabilities. A total of 19 articles met inclusion criteria. Three themes emerged: (a) parents’ understanding of adapted PE (A/PE), (b) parents’ expectations of A/PE teachers, and (c) parents’ undeveloped relationships with A/PE teachers. There exists a disconnection between parent expectations and PE teachers’ abilities to accommodate their children and develop lines of communication. Additionally, parental value toward PE was often lower compared with other areas of need for their children. Future research suggests exploring teacher perspectives in understanding the relationships with parents. Furthermore, exploring the origins of parental values for PE and its impact on their perspectives warrants further investigation.
Barriers and Facilitators for Physical Activity Among Children and Youth With Autism-A Scoping Review

Abstract:Background: The purpose of this scoping review was to systematically synthesize barriers and facilitators for physical activity (PA) among children and youth with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) across the socioecological model. Methods: Five electronic databases were searched in March 2022 for studies examining barriers and facilitators for PA among children and youth with ASD. An updated search was performed in April 2024. The framework synthesis method was utilized, and the socioecological model was the chosen framework. Results: Fifty-four studies published from 2008 to 2024 were included. Among the included studies, 57% included the perspectives of children and youth with ASD alone or together with proxies (eg, parents, teachers, and coaches), while 43% included only the perspectives of proxies. Barriers and facilitators on the intrapersonal and interpersonal levels were most substantial. The analysis led to 2 main categories of barriers and facilitators, those unique to children and youth with ASD, and those similar to what had been identified through research on children and youth, both typically developing and with other disabilities. Conclusions: This comprehensive scoping review shows the complexity of factors contributing to barriers and facilitators for PA among children and youth with ASD, and highlights both the factors unique to this population and more general factors affecting PA participation. The findings from this synthesis might be used to guide the development of inclusive PA in physical education, organized sports, and other community PA arenas.

Abstract:Identifying the factors impacting physical activity (PA) among adolescents and young adults with cerebral palsy (CP).Four focus groups were conducted, with a total of 22 participants with CP, aged 14–24 years, Gross Motor Function Classification (GMFCS) I–III. Our qualitative analysis drew on grounded theory and used Atlas software.Findings revealed four categories of factors impacting PA: (1) Musculoskeletal-pain and additional impairments related to activity limitations; (2) knowledge and exercising skills, and life skills such as problem-solving, decision-making, planning and organizing; (3) availability: lack of transportation, professional guidance, adapted and community-based programs, especially enjoyable activities; (4) social support from professionals (mainly physiotherapists) and peer support with socializing opportunities. Many opposed parental involvement. Those who attended special education schools and had moderate to severe learning disabilities saw PA as an opportunity for social contacts, limited by lack of availability. Those in mainstream schools with mild to no learning disabilities used PA for relieving pain and preserving function, limited by difficulty balancing PA and life goals.Service providers should inculcate knowledge and active-living skills during the transition to adulthood. Professional guidance needed to ensure inclusion in communal PA and offer adapted programs for young people with CP.There is a need for ongoing, accessible, adapted, community-based physical activity programs for young adults with CP guided by skilled professionals that can provide them with opportunities for enjoyable activities involving social interactions.When planning treatment interventions for children and young individuals with CP, healthcare providers should be aware of past therapeutic experiences and in collaboration with parents, are encouraged to be sensitive to possible tensions which may exist regarding their body care.Healthcare and educational professionals should provide young people with CP and their families with theoretical and practical knowledge about physical activity and its health benefits, as well as information about exercise options.Developing life skills in young adults with CP is important for helping them to effectively engage in physical activity and develop the competencies needed to achieve long term physical care.

Abstract:While schools provide one opportunity to encourage physical activity, caregivers play an exceedingly important role in creating an environment conducive to preschool children’s physical activity. Yet, little is known regarding the perceptions of caregivers, important choice agents for young children’s physical activity behavior after participating in a motor skill program. The purpose of this study was to examine caregivers’ perceptions of facilitators and barriers to children’s physical activity at home among rural, low-income families who participated in a school-based early childhood physical activity program, SKIPping with PALS, designed to increase physical activity and improve motor development. Eleven caregivers consented to participate in a semi-structured interview regarding their perceptions of physical activity and their experience after six months of participation in the program. An inductive, naturalistic evaluation approach was utilized for qualitative data analysis, following the six recursive phases of thematic analysis. A review of the interview transcripts revealed that all caregivers valued physical activity and encouraged their children to be active. Four major facilitators, four major barriers, and an overarching theme of parental support for childhood physical activity were identified. These factors are largely circumstantial and attitudinal and, thus, are difficult to modify but are important to be cognizant of when designing interventions.

Abstract:While there are many benefits to regular engagement in physical activity, adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) often do not engage in healthy levels of physical activity. Various barriers, such as lack of perceived capability, accessible environments, transportation, social support, and knowledgeable support staff, may hinder their participation. This scoping review categorized physical activity research for adults with IDD using the COM-B model with the goal of using this information to support stakeholders in determining which factors to consider in program development. We included 46 studies that met the inclusion criteria and described factors affecting physical and psychological capability, physical and social opportunity, and reflective and automatic motivation. Correlates of physical activity were mapped onto the COM-B model constructs and can inform and enhance physical activity programming. Adults with IDD who engaged in physical activity generally had positive attitudes towards exercise and valued physical health benefits. They also appreciated social support and emphasized the importance of having choices and preferences in their physical activity routines. Implications, limitations, and future research directions are discussed.

Abstract:Sports and recreational activities offer physical and psychological benefits to children with limb absence. Understanding what facilitators and barriers exist for the participation in sports and physical activity is vital to aid stakeholders to continue enabling facilitators and develop means to tackle existing barriers so that all children with lower-limb absence can participate in sport and physical activity as they wish. The aim of this systematic review was to identify facilitators and barriers that children with lower-limb absence experience when wanting to participate in sports and physical activity. Systematic review. Five databases were used to identify the literature relating to facilitators and barriers to sports and physical activity for children with lower-limb absence. These were Medline, Scopus, Cochrane, SPORTDiscus, and CINAHL. Google scholar was used as a secondary source. The review followed the "Preferred Reporting Item for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis" guidelines. The review identified 10 articles for inclusion that met predefined inclusion criteria. The identified peer-review articles date from 1999 to 2021. The number of published articles steadily increases up to 2010 and then increase rapidly from 2016 to 2021. The results show although there are facilitators for sports participation for children with limb absence, there are many barriers which continue to hinder many children from participating in sports and physical activity. Facilitators that exist include advancements in prosthetic design and technology, increased opportunities, and physical and social benefits. Barriers that were reported include prosthesis failure, stigma, and high costs.

Abstract:Physical activity has cultural significance and population health benefits. However, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults may experience challenges in participating in physical activity. This mixed methods systematic review aimed to synthetize existing evidence on facilitators and barriers for physical activity participation experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults in Australia. The Joanna Briggs Institute methodology was used. A systematic search was undertaken of 11 databases and 14 grey literature websites during 2020. The included studies reported physical activity facilitators and barriers experienced by Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander participants aged 18+ years, living in the community. Twenty-seven studies met the inclusion criteria. Sixty-two facilitators were identified: 23 individual, 18 interpersonal, 8 community/environmental and 13 policy/program facilitators. Additionally, 63 barriers were identified: 21 individual, 17 interpersonal, 15 community/environmental and 10 policy/program barriers. Prominent facilitators included support from family, friends, and program staff, and opportunities to connect with community or culture. Prominent barriers included a lack of transport, financial constraints, lack of time, and competing work, family or cultural commitments. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults experience multiple facilitators and barriers to physical activity participation. Strategies to increase participation should seek to enhance facilitators and address barriers, collaboratively with communities, with consideration to the local context.

Abstract:The benefits of physical activity (PA) for children with disabilities are well documented, and children with physical disabilities (PD) are often less active than peers with other disability types. Various correlates associated with PA in children with PD have been identified in separate studies, and a thorough analysis of these correlates could aid in understanding and designing interventions that promote children with PD to be more physically active. The purpose of this systematic review was to provide a comprehensive summary of the correlates of PA in children with PD. A systematic search using PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, PsychINFO, Eric, and EMbase was initiated in October 2014 to identify studies examining the correlates of PA in children with PD aged 6–18 years. Two researchers independently screened studies, assessed their methodological quality, and extracted relevant data. The correlates were synthesized and further assessed semi-quantitatively. A total of 45 articles were included in the detailed review. Several modifiable physical, psychological, and environmental correlates were consistently and positively associated with PA in children with PD. Some non-modifiable correlates (e.g., intellectual ability, parents' ethnicity) were found to be consistently and negatively associated with PA. The correlates of PA in children with PD are multifaceted and along many dimensions. This review can have implications for future studies and these may confirm the consistency of variables related to PA. Insights derived from the outcomes may also foster the measurement of the magnitude of associations that could assist the development of future interventions.

Abstract:Purpose: To describe contemporary physical therapy practice and management of children with spina bifida (SB) in the context of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) framework. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional electronic survey was sent to US pediatric physical therapy clinics and posted in the American Physical Therapy Association Pediatrics newsletter. Data were analyzed using content analysis. Codes were compared, refined, and condensed into categories. Results: A total of 163 participants were included. Most assessments evaluated the ICF Activity component. Most frequently reported ICF components: impairments = decreased strength (17.9%), activity limitations = limited walking (22.5%), and participation restrictions = restricted socializing/playing with peers or siblings (22.6%). The most prevalent intervention was strength training. Conclusions: Physical therapists (PTs) in the United States are performing assessments and interventions supported by available evidence; however, knowledge translation and more research are needed to support best practices in PT management of children with SB.

Abstract:The popularity of the Paralympics co-exists with persistent exclusion of disabled youth and adults in community sport and recreation programmes around the world. This study explored the experiences of disabled people in sport, fitness and dance, drawing upon a range of participants’ perspectives from Paralympic athletes and professional dancers, to those who’d never engaged in physical activities. We asked participants about the range of psycho-social factors that intervene between a disabled person and a workable, enjoyable fitness regimen. Insights emerged into factors that encourage enjoyable physical movement for some, and factors that discourage or prohibit this for others. Analytic tools of Critical Disability Theory were applied to penetrate stereotyped conceptualizations of disabled people, taking a long view into the history of disability discrimination and exclusion. An example is the concept and (English) word, ‘fitness’ used during the Eugenics Movement to dismiss the worth of disabled people. Along with other marginalized populations, the ‘unfit’ were systematically targeted with elimination. We addressed these archaic attitudes, in concert with the present era’s intrusions of architectural, programmatic and attitudinal barriers, which may become internalized as resistance to physical activities. Participants offered strategies to support others in the world of movement, along with encouragement to Disability Studies scholars to expand research in this arena.

From ‘it makes me feel free’ to ‘they won’t let me play’: the body and physical activity-related perceptions and experiences of children with congenital heart disease and their parents

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to examine the body and physical activity perceptions and experiences of children with congenital heart disease (CHD) and of their parents to advance understanding of how they make sense of and navigate the complexities of the children’s physical activity participation in the context of their everyday lives. Guided by narrative constructionism, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 16 children aged 9 to 12 and their parents (32 interviews total) and examined the content of and core patterns within their body and physical activity-related stories. Children derived pleasure, social connection, physical literacy, and health and well-being from activity engagement. Children and parents experienced complex emotional webs of pride, embarrassment, shame, envy, and fear/anxiety in relation to the body and physical activity, however, attempted to manage these emotions to foster sustained activity involvement. While children engaged in safe yet pleasurable activities by self-regulating, parents attempted to hide their worries surrounding their children’s self-regulatory abilities. Cultural narratives of risk, healthism, and disability were drawn upon by participants when structuring their stories, thereby shaping the body and activity-related cognitions, emotions, and behaviours they experienced. This study highlights the utility of narrative inquiry to examine the complexities of children with CHD’s activity participation, including the role of the sociocultural milieu in shaping body and physical activity-related psychological states. The findings can guide activity leaders, parents, and health-care practitioners in how to foster inclusive physical activity programming to optimise the health and well-being of children with CHD.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was twofold: (a) to examine and compare levels of parental self-efficacy (PSE) and parenting practices (PP) between parents of young children with and without disabilities regarding physical activity (PA) participation of their children and (b) to analyze and compare the relationship between PSE and PP. A total of 235 participants completed a survey measuring levels of PSE and PP related to the promotion of PA for their children. The results showed no differences in levels of PSE and PP between parents of children with and without disabilities (p > 0.05). A positive moderate relationship was found between PSE and PP from total participants (r = 0.497, p < 0.001) as well as parents of children with disabilities (r = 0.440, p < 0.001). Parents of children with disabilities had comparable levels of confidence (PSE) and competence (PP) in promoting PA to their children compared to those of parents of children without disabilities. The current study supports the mechanism of self-efficacy and behavior and the importance of early intervention for parents of children with disabilities to build higher PSE for their child's future PA habit through improved PP.

Abstract:PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to provide an in-depth exploration and understanding of parents' thoughts, feelings and concerns they experience while reflecting on their actions, challenges and needs in enabling their child's participation at home, at school and in the community.METHOD: A naturalistic inquiry with thirteen Dutch parents using interpretative phenomenological analysis.RESULTS: Analysis revealed three super-ordinate themes: "Parents' experiences and concerns about systems, laws and regulations", "Parents' experiences and thoughts about physical and/or social environment" and "Parents' experiences and feelings of finding and/or enabling an activity". Parents' often expressed feelings of disappointment derived from being misunderstood, from dealing with the complexity of systems, from hindrance of participation of their children by the social and the physical environment, and from the lack of leisure activities for their child. It is primarily restrictions in the physical and social environments that urge them to take actions, to experience challenges and think of needs.CONCLUSIONS: In-depth exploration and understanding of parents' articulated matters must be shared and taken seriously by policymakers and service providers. Parents' knowledge and experiences should be of major relevance to improve paediatric rehabilitation and other services for children with a physical disability. Implications for Rehabilitation To achieve tailored pediatric rehabilitation, involvement and needs of parents in enhancing their child's participation ought to be acknowledged. Active use of parents' experiences and knowledge regarding the participation of their child on different levels of decision making may improve daily services in pediatric rehabilitation. Aiming for optimal participation of a child with a physical disability at home, at school and in the community, the focus of pediatric rehabilitation needs to shift towards enabling, social and physical, environments.
