Abstract:Earthquake-induced-landslides will change the underlying surface conditions (topography, vegetation cover rate, etc.), which consequently may influence the hydrologic response and then change the flash flood risk. The Jianpinggou catchment, located in the Wenchuan earthquake (occurred in Sichuan, China, 2008) affected area, is selected as the study area. The distribution of the landslides is obtained from the remote sensing image data. The changes of topography are obtained from the comparisons among digital elevation models (DEMs) during different periods. A physical-based model, the integrated hydrology model (InHM), is used to simulate the hydrologic response before and after the landslide. The influence of the underlying surface conditions is then discussed based on the simulation results. The results reveal that landslides cause significant effects on the hydrologic response, and the impact is proportional to the proportion of surface flow in the total runoff. The effect of landslides on the runoff is insignificant at the outlet, but obvious in the local area. The larger the rainfall, the more visible the impact, and the impact of landslides will increase rapidly at the threshold of the runoff (the total rainfall of 235 mm in 6 h in the study area), but there is a limit with the further enlarged rainfall. The improved understanding of the impact of landslides on the hydrologic response provides valuable theoretical support for storm flood forecasting.

Abstract:The role of reservoirs in water resource management is becoming crucial for flood control and drought mitigation in any basin because of the frequent occurrence of extreme weather events attributed to global climate change and human activities. Therefore, evaluating the relationship between reservoir storage (discharge) and wet (dry) evolution is crucial. This study explores the time-delay effect and spatial heterogeneity of reservoir discharge and storage on dry and wet conditions in several basins of Lin’an District (LAD) in southeastern China. An integrated methodology is developed in this study to assess the relationship by a monthly streamflow simulation model, the meteorological and hydrological comprehensive drought index (CDI) using a Frank Copula function, and an eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) model and Shapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) framework were used to develop a model to forecast dry and wet conditions and to evaluate the key factors affecting their changes. Results from the study indicate that the monthly water balance model can simulate the monthly hydrological processes with relatively high accuracy in the LAD region. The CDI reflects the intensity of wet and dry events more precisely, thoroughly, sensitively, and consistently by combining the benefits of hydrological and meteorological drought indicators. Precipitation, evaporation, streamflow, the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) were the main contributing factors influencing the above 80% accuracy of the wet and dry forecast models. The average correlation between the outflow of each reservoir in LAD and CDI is 0.47, which is higher than the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and Standardized Runoff Index (SRI). Moreover, the delay in months of dry (wet) events based on SPI, SRI, and CDI are 0.45 (0.41), 1.07 (0.65), and 0.87 (0.60), respectively. It suggests reservoirs are less capable of adaptive scheduling for drought events than for wet events, and they respond most quickly to SPI defined events. The results can provide scientific and technological support for water safety and security in the study area.

Abstract:Continuous seismic records near river channels can be used to quantify the energy induced by river sediment transport. During the 2011 typhoon season, we deployed a seismic array along the Chishan River in the mountain area of southern Taiwan, where there is strong variability in water discharge and high sedimentation rates. We observe hysteresis in the high-frequency (5–15 Hz) seismic noise level relative to the associated hydrological parameters. In addition, our seismic noise analysis reveals an asymmetry and a high coherence in noise cross-correlation functions for several station pairs during the typhoon passage, which corresponds to sediment particles and turbulent flows impacting along the riverbed where the river bends sharply. Based on spectral characteristics of the seismic records, we also detected 20 landslide/debris flow events, which we use to estimate the sediment supply. Comparison of sediment flux between seismologically determined bedload and derived suspended load indicates temporal changes in the sediment flux ratio, which imply a complex transition process from the bedload regime to the suspension regime between typhoon passage and off-typhoon periods. Our study demonstrates the possibility of seismologically monitoring river bedload transport, thus providing valuable additional information for studying fluvial bedrock erosion and mountain landscape evolution.

Abstract:Abstract Numerous studies have reported that surface hydrological loading can seasonally modulate seismicity rates at crustal depths. For example, substantial winter snow accumulation occurs across the Japanese Islands, and these snowy regions appear to have seasonally modulated the occurrence of previous large inland earthquakes. Therefore, it is important to investigate the impact of seasonal stress changes on crustal seismicity to deepen our understanding of earthquake generation. Here we constrain seasonal changes in the surface load across northeastern Japan using Global Navigation Satellite System surface displacements and evaluate the potential relationship between temporal trends in inland seismicity and estimated seasonal stress changes. The spatial distribution of the seasonal surface load is consistent with snow depth along the Sea of Japan. The inland seismicity beneath northeastern Japan is modestly modulated by the seasonal stress changes that are induced by the annual snow load. However, this seasonal response is weaker than that in other regions. This weak modulation may be due to the small surface‐load‐induced stress perturbation relative to the long‐term‐averaged stressing rate and/or the limited presence of crustal fluids to trigger seismicity in Japan.

Abstract:Abstract Surface hazards can form hazard cascades which expand their reach. However, our understanding of their complex dynamics and ability to mitigate their impacts remain limited. In 2018, two landslides dammed the Jinsha River in the Tibetan plateau and formed landslide‐dammed lakes. Subsequent dam breaches prompted the evacuation of >120,000 people. An early warning system for floods using a regional seismic network has been proposed on the basis of catastrophic floods having been detected ∼100 km away, with seismic energy proportional to discharge. Surprisingly, we find that this catastrophic outburst flood was undetectable beyond a few kilometers, with peak seismic energy preceding peak discharge. We propose that river channel stability also controls seismic energy generation and should be considered for accurate monitoring of catastrophic floods. In contrast, we find that the various processes during dam breach can be well‐characterized seismically further away and provide warning ∼60 min before discharge exceeds monsoon flood levels. We also show that numerical modeling of dam breaches which typically lacks in situ measurements can benefit from incorporating seismic data as constraints. Finally, we show that this event drastically increased sediment fluxes ∼670 km downstream for years and may significantly reduce the capacity of hydropower plants. Our results reveal ways to improve early warning of catastrophic outburst floods and the need to consider surface hazards' long‐term impact when managing infrastructure in mountainous regions.

Spatiotemporal Characteristics of Upper-Crust Seasonal Velocity Changes in North–South Seismic Belt and South China Block in China

Abstract:Investigating mechanisms and characteristics of the non-tectonic deformation has crucial implications for evaluating the subsurface stress evolution. In this study, we continuously tracked the seasonal velocity changes of Rayleigh wave at 2-10 s with the ambient noise interferometry and discrete wavelet decomposition, in different regions along the actively deforming North-South Seismic Belt (NSSB) and the stable Guangdong region in the South China block in China. The seasonal velocity changes exhibit strong lateral variations across different re-gions, with much larger seasonality (annual periodicity) and amplitude along the NSSB than those in the stable Guangdong region. There are also small-scale lateral variations inside of each region and generally larger am-plitudes of the seasonal velocity changes at greater depth, but the phases (peaks, mostly in winter or summer) at different depths are consistent. The mechanism of the seasonal changes is most likely the direct loading effect of the precipitation, as indicated by consistency in their phases. However, the amplitudes of the seasonal velocity changes seem not controlled by the amount of precipitation, but are more dependent on the tectonic deformation at the different scales, from the correlation between the amplitude of the velocity change and the absolute strain rate. We demonstrate that the crustal media in the regions with larger tectonic background stress are more sensitive to the seasonal loadings. The new finding also highlights the role of the external seasonal loadings in the modulation of seismic activities and risk evaluations.
Crustal response to water loads and expansion of triggered seismicity around the Xiluodu Reservoir, Southwest China

Abstract:The transition to low-carbon energy generation requires a diverse portfolio of energy sources. Large hydropower stations play a crucial role in providing eco-friendly energy but can lead to crustal deformation and seismic activity due to reservoir impoundment and discharge. The mechanism behind how impoundment-induced deformation influences reservoir-triggered seismicity remains unclear. We investigate this at the world��s 4th largest hydropower station in Xiluodu, China, using interdisciplinary analyses of relocated earthquakes, geodetic data, and numerical simulations. Geodetic observations confirm both a linear elastic response to hydrologic loading and the transition towards a relaxed and flexural response. Notably, approximately 81% of the earthquakes since impoundment occurred within ~15 km of the subsidence center. These events temporally relate to rapid hydrologic loading/unloading periods, with their spatiotemporal outward migration potentially caused by viscous relaxation of load stresses in the lower crust and upper mantle. The reservoir-induced flexural deformation and subsequent viscous relaxation may control the distribution and expansion of triggered seismicity. This research highlights the urgent need to enhance geohazard monitoring efforts around the subsidence center and emphasizes the vital importance of carefully considering this factor during the construction of large reservoirs to mitigate potential seismic risks.

Abstract:The underlying mechanism of the ongoing seismic swarm in the Noto Peninsula, Japan, which generates earthquakes at 10 times the average regional rate, remains elusive. We capture the evolution of the subsurface stress state by monitoring changes in seismic wave velocities over an 11-year period. A sustained long-term increase in seismic velocity that is seasonally modulated drops before the earthquake swarm. We use a three-dimensional hydromechanical model to quantify environmentally driven variations in excess pore pressure, revealing its crucial role in governing the seasonal modulation with a stress sensitivity of 6 × 10 −9 per pascal. The decrease in seismic velocity aligns with vertical surface uplift, suggesting potential fluid migration from a high–pore pressure zone at depth. Stress changes induced by abnormally intense snow falls contribute to initiating the swarm through subsequent perturbations to crustal pore pressure.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Catchment‐scale analyzes of spatial and temporal variability in landscape connectivity are critical considerations in appraisals of landscape evolution and disaster mitigation in tectonically active mountain belts such as Taiwan. This study uses historical aerial photographs, flow discharge and seismic data to analyze landslide changes and channel adjustments over a 30 year period in the Liwu Basin. Recurrent earthquakes and typhoon events trigger frequent landslide activity, channel adjustment and sediment reworking in this system. Spatial variability in magnitude–frequency relations of hillslope‐valley floor (lateral) and upstream–downstream (longitudinal) connectivity during the study period are shown to reflect annual reworking in source and accumulation zones, while partly‐confined valleys in the mid‐catchment area trap sediment behind landslide‐induced dams that are formed and breached on an approximately decadal basis. This promotes partial longitudinal connectivity in these areas. Landscape responses to disturbance events were especially pronounced following combinations of seismic and typhoon events prior to the 1998 and 2005 images. Although single high magnitude events and series of moderate events affect patterns of landscape connectivity in the Liwu Basin, residence times for sediment storage are very short in this highly‐connected river system, where confined valley settings extend virtually to the coast. Abstract:The erosion of mountain belts controls their topographic and structural evolution1,2,3 and is the main source of sediment delivered to the oceans4. Mountain erosion rates have been estimated from current relief and precipitation, but a more complete evaluation of the controls on erosion rates requires detailed measurements across a range of timescales. Here we report erosion rates in the Taiwan mountains estimated from modern river sediment loads, Holocene river incision and thermochronometry on a million-year scale. Estimated erosion rates within the actively deforming mountains are high (3–6 mm yr-1) on all timescales, but the pattern of erosion has changed over time in response to the migration of localized tectonic deformation. Modern, decadal-scale erosion rates correlate with historical seismicity and storm-driven runoff variability. The highest erosion rates are found where rapid deformation, high storm frequency and weak substrates coincide, despite low topographic relief.

Abstract:Forests in tectonically active regions are disturbed by earthquakes. Besides direct injuries to trees, earthquakes also induce stand-wide changes in hydrological conditions, whose effects on long-term forest growth and resilience remain unknown. Here we establish spatio-temporal links between global tree-ring width series and earthquakes after 1900, disentangle seismic signals from climate-induced variations in ring width series, test growth changes using superposed epoch analysis and quantify post-earthquake resilience shifts along environmental gradients in seven regions around the world. We found sites with enhanced resilience locate in relatively dry areas of temperate regions, where the response of tree growth to growing-season precipitation also increased after earthquakes. Our results provide evidence that earthquake-induced soil cracks and fractures increased precipitation infiltration to deeper soil layers and enhanced the use of water and nutrients by trees. In contrast, reduced post-earthquake resilience in regions with abundant precipitation can be explained by increased soil erosion and nutrient leaching. We conclude that seismic disturbances cause decadal-scale shifts in forest resilience under specific environmental conditions, disentangling complex interactions between lithosphere, biosphere and atmosphere. These findings can contribute to a better understanding of how the Earth system functions.

Associated impact mechanism of heavy rain and floods in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze river basin based on ocean-atmosphere anomaly patterns

Abstract:Heavy rainfall and flooding disasters are increasing due to global warming. A clear understanding of the mechanism of heavy rain and floods is the basic premise of disaster risk management. However, most previous studies emphasized more on the single anomalous signal from the average state in the whole season, which may neglect the combined influence of multiple signals in the ocean-atmosphere and differential characteristics of anomalous signals at different periods. Here, our study aimed to reveal the possible influence mechanism of heavy rain and floods in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River Basin (MLRYRB) by systematically analyzing the monthly-scale and daily-scale ocean-atmosphere anomaly patterns in the preceding periods of heavy rainfall and flooding events. The results showed that heavy rainfall and flooding events were highly likely to occur in the region one month after El Niño decayed, with the flooding intensity in June having the negative correlation with the sea ice concentration anomaly in the Arctic with a lag of about 5 months (150 days). Besides, North Atlantic Oscillation, Western Pacific subtropical high, blocking, East Asian subtropical westerly jet, and the water vapor fluxes from the Arabian Sea and western Pacific Ocean could be used as the anomalous signals inducing heavy rain and floods. The daily-scale conceptual model inducing heavy rainfall and flooding events was built based on the patterns of all anomalous signals, which detailed the possible impact mechanism of heavy rain and floods in the region. By making targeted forecasts of anomalous signals and using this information in water resources planning and management based on climate mechanisms, it will have a significant impact on water management in the country.

Study focus This study presents long-term and high-resolution modeling of flood occurrence, interdecadal patterns of river-floodplain dynamics, and analysis of flooding during two typhoon events—Nari and Morakot over Taiwan. The modeling system combines a hydrological model (HiGW-MAT) and a river hydrodynamics model (CaMa-Flood), simulating hydrologic-hydrodynamic processes at ∼ 5 km resolution with flood occurrences downscaled to ∼ 90 m. New hydrological insights for the region As the first investigation to conduct spatially comprehensive and temporally continuous modeling in Taiwan, this study presents important advances on the application of large-scale hydrological-hydrodynamic models in settings like that of Taiwan with important implications on flood prediction under climate change. The assessment of interdecadal changes in streamflow indicates no consistent trends over the past four decades; however, the variabilities in monthly-scale streamflow are significant and regionally diverse across Taiwan. Decadal changes in flood occurrence are also minimal at the island-scale, but the changes vary substantially across different regions and exhibit an increased variability over time. Furthermore, the simulated flood patterns in response to Typhoons Nari and Morakot suggest that the modeling framework can be used to reproduce the spatial dynamics and temporal progression of flooding under extreme events in relatively small regions like Taiwan.

Seismology-based Early Identification of Dam-Formation Landquake Events

Abstract:Flooding resulting from the bursting of dams formed by landquake events such as rock avalanches, landslides and debris flows can lead to serious bank erosion and inundation of populated areas near rivers. Seismic waves can be generated by landquake events which can be described as time-dependent forces (unloading/reloading cycles) acting on the Earth. In this study, we conduct inversions of long-period (LP, period ≥20 s) waveforms for the landquake force histories (LFHs) of ten events, which provide quantitative characterization of the initiation, propagation and termination stages of the slope failures. When the results obtained from LP waveforms are analyzed together with high-frequency (HF, 1–3 Hz) seismic signals, we find a relatively strong late-arriving seismic phase (dubbed Dam-forming phase or D-phase) recorded clearly in the HF waveforms at the closest stations, which potentially marks the time when the collapsed masses sliding into river and perhaps even impacting the topographic barrier on the opposite bank. Consequently, our approach to analyzing the LP and HF waveforms developed in this study has a high potential for identifying five dam-forming landquake events (DFLEs) in near real-time using broadband seismic records, which can provide timely warnings of the impending floods to downstream residents.
Strong Seasonal Variations of Seismic Velocity in Eastern Margin of Tibetan Plateau and Sichuan Basin from Ambient Noise Interferometry

Abstract:Ambient noise interferometry between seismic stations makes it possible to monitor temporal changes of the Earth's media continuously. Here, we examined seasonal changes of Rayleigh‐wave empirical Greens functions at 2–10‐s period from 8 years of continuous data of 200 seismic station pairs in Sichuan, China. We used a wavelet decomposition to extract the seasonal signals. We found that most station pairs show seasonal variations with velocity perturbations of up to 0.8%. The seasonality varies in strength, amplitude, phase, periods, and location, but the phase is remarkably consistent, with the largest changes mostly in summer or winter months. We believe that the cause of the seasonality is likely the elastic loading due to regional precipitation. The effect is greater in the tectonically active Tibetan Plateau margin than in the stable Sichuan basin and in the deeper crust than in the uppermost crust. The effect is also strongly influenced by local crustal structure. Our results indicate that studies of tectonic crustal changes need to consider non‐tectonic effects.
Multi-Timescale Variations in Water and Sediment Discharge of Mountainous Rivers in Southern Zhejiang Province, China

Abstract:The rivers in southern Zhejiang Province are typical mountainous rivers that are impacted by various climatic and anthropogenic factors. In this study, the annual, seasonal and flood peak variations of water and sediment discharge, as well as their causes, are investigated using the Mann-Kendall test, accumulative curve, and wavelet analysis based on data from six hydrological stations and nine meteorological stations over the past 40–60 years. Insignificant increasing trends, occur in the water discharge for most rivers due to increased precipitation, while the observed significant decrease in the sediment load can be attributed to anthropogenic impacts (i.e., reservoirs constructions, sand mining). The greatest decrease in sediment load (64%) occurred in the Feiyun River (1968–2019). The water and sediment discharge during the plum rain season (April–June) and typhoon seasons (July–September) collectively account for ~75 and ~90% of the annual totals, respectively. Due to the differing rainfall patterns between these two seasons, the maximum monthly water discharge occurs in the plum rain season in most rivers. Meanwhile, the maximum flood peak discharge and daily sediment load, as well as the maximum monthly and daily sediment loads, occur more frequently during the typhoon season. Owing to reservoir construction, the maximum flood peak discharge and daily sediment discharge decreased by 13–50 and 18–74%, respectively, and the intra-annual distribution of water discharge became uniform. The dominant periodicities of annual water and sediment discharge for most rivers are ~22 years under the impacts of precipitation, while those in the Feiyun River are ~13 years due to human activities (the ratio of the total storage capacity and annual average water discharge reaches 84%).

Abstract:Landslides induced by strong earthquakes often destroy large amounts of landscape vegetation which can trigger significant changes in runoff potential and flood flow. Little is known about hydrological behaviours imposed by co-seismic landslides and their post-earthquake evolution. Therefore, we collected time-series datasets (2007-2018) of underlying surface conditions (USC) changes including landslide expansion and recovery in a watershed affected by the Wenchuan earthquake to further quantify how the large physical disturbance affected the flood hydrological behaviours. The hydrological model HEC-HMS was calibrated and validated to predict the historical hydrological behaviours based on 5 min time-series data in rainfalls and streamflow (2018-2019), showing a good model performance with a mean Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency of 0.76. It was found that, shortly after the earthquake, the sharp expansion with 11% of landslide areas elevated the magnitudes of runoff potential, peak discharge, and runoff volume by >10%, and the peak to time for the high-magnitude flood was advanced by 25 min compared to the pre-earthquake levels. The tipping point along the hydrological disturbance-recovery trajectory was detected within 2011 with higher flood peaks and volumes, and the periods of 2011-2013 (i.e. 3-5 years post-earthquake) were deemed to be a rapid recovery period, revealing an unstable hydrological function. These findings are significant for clearly understanding the magnitude and timing, as well as greater risks of post-earthquake catastrophic flooding in earthquake-stricken regions. Additionally, the post-earthquake accompanied rainstorm-induced geohazards, which limited the recovery of landscape vegetation, triggering an undulant but clear recovery process (1-7 years post-earthquake) of hydrological behaviours. These findings promoted our understanding of the spatiotemporal evolution of hydrological behaviours triggered by the earthquake, and further contribute to the development of adaptation and mitigation strategies for the unpredictable flash floods triggered by future abrupt natural hazards in earthquake-affected regions.

Abstract:Using microtremor data from the Wangjiayan landslide in Beichuan (Southwest China), we applied the horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) method to evaluate the associated seismic effect. The results show the following: (1) The microtremor spectrum characteristics of the Wangjiayan landslide are significant, and the HVSR curves feature multiple peaks and fluctuate significantly in the high-frequency band, suggesting contributions from the underlying stratigraphic structure, overburden thickness, and topography. (2) The predominant frequencies of the landslide crown, the landslide bedding, and the landslide main body appear at 2.75, 3.79, and 3.61–4.06 Hz, with corresponding peak amplification factors of 3.44, 2.45, and 2.34–2.48. The amplification effect tends to intensify as the elevation of the microtremor measurement points rises gradually. (3) Microtremor directional characteristics are evident at the crown of the Wangjiayan landslide, with significant directivity ranging from 80 to 110°, including the main slide direction of the landslide at 80°. (4) The preferential orientation of the joints in the Wangjiayan landslide area ranges from 70 to 100°, coinciding with the significant directivity of the microtremors at the landslide crown, which indicates that the tectonic stress induced by the Yingxiu–Beichuan fault may have a particular promoting effect on the formation of the Wangjiayan landslide. The results serve as an additional reference for researching the triggering mechanism of the Wangjiayan landslide and provide technical support for investigating the seismic effect of old landslides.

Abstract:This study builds upon deterministic evaluations of the extensive cumulative rainfall thresholds associated with shallow landslides in the Gaoping River Basin, with a specific focus on the necessary response times during typhoon and intense rainfall events. Following the significant impact of Typhoon Morakot on the Liugui area, our investigation enhances previous research by employing a downscaled approach. We aim to establish early warning models for village-level, intermediate-scale landslide cumulative rainfall thresholds and to create action thresholds for small-scale, key landslide-prone slopes. Our inquiry not only combines various analytical models but also validates their reliability through comprehensive case studies. Comparative analysis with the empirical values set by the Soil and Water Conservation Bureau (SWCB) and the National Center for Disaster Reduction (NCDR) provides a median response time of 6 h, confirming that our findings are consistent with the response time frameworks established by these institutions, thus validating their effectiveness for typhoon-related landslide alerts. The results not only highlight the reference value of applying downscaled cumulative rainfall thresholds at the village level but also emphasize the significance of the evaluated warning thresholds as viable benchmarks for early warnings in landslide disaster management during Taiwan's flood and typhoon seasons. This research offers a refined methodological approach to landslide early warning systems and provides scientific support for decision making by local governments and disaster response teams.

Abstract:Spatiotemporal variation of storm surges in the Taiwan Strait (TWS) is studied using water level datasets from 14 tidal gauge stations located in the TWS from summer to fall of 2016. The effects of bathymetry on storm surges and tropical cyclone (TC)-induced continental shelf wave (CSW) are explored. By comparing water level response along the east coast of TWS, it is found that storm surges are asymmetric on the north and south sides of the Zhan-Yun Ridge (ZYR), regardless of the different categories and tracks of TCs passing by. Observations indicate that the ZYR could modulate the storm surges and the CSW propagation; ZYR can not only amplify the storm surges that generally peak around the ZYR, but also block the CSW propagation by dramatically dissipating its kinetic energy as revealed by the dispersion relation for the first mode CSW. Moreover, local wind work and the remote forcing, which are induced by TCs and cold fronts, respectively, can also modulate the synoptic variations of water level in the TWS.
