Abstract:Used nuclear fuel reprocessing represents a unique challenge when dealing with radionuclides such as isotopes of 85Kr and 129I2 due to their volatility and long half-life. Efficient capture of 129I2 ( t1/2 = 15.7 × 106 years) from the nuclear waste stream can help reduce the risk of releasing I2 radionuclide into the environment and/or potential incorporation into the human thyroid. Metal organic frameworks have the reported potential to be I2 adsorbents but the effect of water vapor, generally present in the reprocessing off-gas stream, is rarely taken into account. Moisture-stable porous metal organic frameworks that can selectively adsorb I2 in the presence of water vapor are thus of great interest. Herein, we report on the I2 adsorption capacity of two microporous metal organic frameworks at both dry and humid conditions. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy reveal distinct sorption sites of molecular I2 within the pores in proximity to the phenyl- and phenol-based linkers stabilized by the I···π and I···O interactions, which allow selective uptake of iodine.

Abstract:Radioactive iodine (131I) with a short half-life of ~8.02 days is one of the most commonly used nuclides in nuclear medicine. However, 131I easily poses a significant risk to human health and ecological environment. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a secure and efficient strategy to capture and store radioactive iodine. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are a new generation of sorbents with outstanding physical and chemical properties, rendering them attractive candidates for the adsorption and immobilization of iodine. This review focuses on recent research advancements in mechanisms underlying iodine adsorption over MOFs and their derivatives, including van der Waals interactions, complexing interactions, and chemical precipitation. Furthermore, this review concludes by outlining the challenges and opportunities for the safe disposal of radioactive iodine from the perspective of the material design and system evaluation based on our knowledge. Thus, this paper aims to offer necessary information regarding the large-scale production of MOFs for iodine adsorption.

Abstract:Ag clusters and nanoparticles have attracted much attention in the fields of environmental catalysis and pollutant removal. It is a common strategy to fabricate highly dispersed Ag nanoparticles in porous scaffolds via in situ growth. Here, anionic metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been employed to provide robust supports for Ag species. Ag nanoparticles with well-defined sizes are observed in MOFs when internal NH2Me2 + is exchanged with extrinsic Ag+ ions. The extended X-ray absorption fine structure and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra confirm that about 20% of Ag+ are reduced into Ag0, while the rest 80% are still Ag+ species. The comparison of Ag loading into anionic and neutral Cu-BTC MOFs suggests that the exchangeable cations facilitate Ag+ migration into the interior of MOFs and thus alleviate its aggregation and spontaneous reduction. Besides, the adsorption tests verify that all the Ag species in MOFs are accessible to iodine vapor to form AgI. The charge transfer from frameworks to trapped iodine and the water in the air promote the formation of iodide ions, which react with Ag+ to produce AgI. The iodine adsorption performance of MOF beads was also evaluated using the pore diffusion model. This work provides insights into the evolution of Ag species in MOFs and potential Ag-based adsorbents for radioiodine capture.

Abstract:We performed large-scale molecular simulation to screen and identify metal-organic framework materials for gaseous iodine capture, as part of our ongoing effort in addressing management and handling issues of various radionuclides in the grand scheme of spent nuclear fuel reprocessing. Starting from the computation-ready experimental (CoRE) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) database, grand canonical Monte Carlo simulation was employed to predict the iodine uptake values of the MOFs. A ranking list of MOFs based on their iodine uptake capabilities was generated, with the Top 10 candidates identified and their respective adsorption sites visualized. Subsequently, machine learning was used to establish structure-property relationships to correlate MOFs' various structural and chemical features with their corresponding performances in iodine capture, yielding interpretable common features and design rules for viable MOF adsorbents. The research strategy and framework of the present study could aid the development of high-performing MOF adsorbents for capture and recovery of radioactive iodine, and moreover, other volatile environmentally hazardous species.

Abstract:The enrichment of radioactive iodine in the waste of nuclear industries threatens human health, and thus the efficient capture of iodine has attracted a great deal of attention in recent years. Porous organic polymers (POPs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), new classes of porous materials, act as outstanding candidate adsorbent materials in this field due to their high surface areas, permanent tunable porosities, controllable structures, high thermal/chemical stabilities, versatility in molecular design and potential for post-synthetic modification. Herein, this review focuses on the research progress of these two types of porous materials for highly efficient iodine capture. We analyze and discuss some valid strategies for enhancing their iodine uptake, including increasing their surface area and pore volume, using organic building units with unique configurations and functions, introducing chemical functional groups to provide high-enthalpy binding sites, and further processing of POP and MOF materials. Indeed, there are many special structural and functional features found in porous POP and MOF materials, which make them unique and merit further exploration. Thus, we expect to see their usage grow as this field progresses.

Abstract:The effective capture of radioiodine exhausted from nuclear power plants, is of paramount importance for the radioactivity control and remediation tasks. Herein, a robust metal–organic framework Ag-Tipe integrating with open Ag + metal sites and imidazole groups is designed for efficient capture of I 2 and CH 3 I. The dense imidazolium groups are expected to interact with the I 2 through charge transfer, enhancing the binding affinity and trapping CH 3 I as a reactant in the methylation reaction. In addition, the fully open silver metal center in Ag-Tipe can coordinate with iodine species to form AgI. Therefore, the Ag-Tipe exhibits high I 2 and CH 3 I uptake capacities of 3.31 and 0.55 g/g at 75 °C, respectively. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the I 2 and CH 3 I binding energy at different sites in Ag-Tipe follows the order Ag > imidazole > benzene ring. This work demonstrates the important role of the binding site of the adsorbent in achieving high I 2 /CH 3 I trapping performance.

Abstract:<p>The effective capture of radioiodine is vital to the development of the nuclear industry and environmental protection. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising adsorbents for iodine vapor due to the versatile metal nodes and linkers, as well as tunable pore structures. Here, five thiophene-based metal–organic frameworks with different pore geometries were investigated for their iodine adsorption properties, and the relationship between the pore structures and iodine adsorption capacities is examined. DUT-68 adsorbs a large amount of iodine (1081 mg/g), which is 28% higher than that of the homologous DUT-67 (843 mg/g), because its large cage could provide more space for the packing of molecular iodine in the middle of the pore. The MIL-53-TDC(In) with 1D straight-through pore channels only has an iodine capacity of 660 mg/g, due to its small pore volume and little confinement effect. Meanwhile, the In-DTC and Ho-DTC, with smaller pore sizes than the kinetic diameter of iodine molecules, exhibit almost no iodine adsorption properties. Raman, fluorescence, XPS spectra and DFT calculation confirm the strong charge transfer effect from thiophene linkers to trapped iodine. DFT calculation also provides quantitative adsorption energy of −44.5 kJ/mol between one iodine molecule and one thiophene group linked with Zr nodes, higher than that of thiophene groups linked with In nodes. This work may motivate the topology-directed design of MOFs for iodine capture with optimized pore structures, metal nodes and linkers to enhance the adsorption performance.</p>

Abstract:A new three-dimensional porous metal-organic framework, {[NH2(CH3)(2)][Zn(atz)(ox)]center dot H2O}(n) (1) (Hatz = 5-amino-1H-tetrazole, H(2)ox = oxalic acid), has been solvothermally synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, TG, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Complex 1 exhibits an anionic framework that can be simplified as a rarely reported 4-connected lon network. Complex 1 could be utilized as a platform for emission tuning by doping different lanthanide ions. In addition, gas adsorption studies reveal that 1 has a high isosteric heat of CO2 and good adsorption selectivity for CO2 over CH4 and N-2.
Combined Experimental and Theoretical Studies on Iodine Capture of Zr-based Metal-Organic Frameworks: Effect of N-functionalization and Adsorption Mechanism

Abstract:The potential leakage of nuclear waste, especially radioiodine, is a major safety concerning issue around the world. To remove radioiodine from nuclear waste efficiently, there is an urgent demand for adsorbents that possess both high stability and strong adsorption affinity for environmental remediation. Herein, two Zr-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) and their N-functionalized analogues have been synthesized and researched for iodine adsorption in both vapours and solutions. It was found that Zr-MOFs with N-enriched ligands (e.g., pyridine and amino) exhibited the faster iodine adsorption rate and the higher iodine uptake amount (e.g., reaching adsorption equilibrium within 4 hours with the removal rate of above 85% for iodine solution adsorption) than their unfunctionalized counterparts (UiO-66 and UiO-67). The critical role played by N-enriched groups in enhancing iodine adsorption has been revealed through versatile model fittings, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy characterizations, as well as density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Compared to those in amino-group, the N-atoms in pyridine-groups showed a deeper affinity towards iodine molecules. Remarkably, the N-enriched UiOs adsorbents also exhibited good recyclability, especially UiO-66-PYDC and UiO-67-NH2 could maintain the removal efficiency of 89.05% and 85.49% after four adsorption-desorption recycling tests. With the strong iodine uptake affinity and outstanding regeneration performance, this work has systematically investigated the impact of N-functionalization on the enhanced performance for iodine capture by using the N-enriched UiO MOFs as promising adsorbents, providing an insightful guideline into the physical chemistry of adsorption mechanism behind the radioiodine capture.

Abstract:Radioactive iodine in nuclear waste is increasingly harmful to the human body and the environment because of its strong radioactivity, high fluidity, easy solubility in water, and long half-life. It is very important to find clean and economical materials to recover and fix radioactive iodine. In this paper, the amino-metal-organic framework was covalently modified to obtain composite materials to improve the recycling of iodine in the environment. These adsorbents are used to adsorb iodine in water, showing outstanding adsorption performance. The adsorption data are in good agreement with the Langmuir isothermal adsorption model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating that the adsorption process is mainly monolayer adsorption and chemical adsorption. The two materials showed selective adsorption capacity for iodine in the solution containing multiple competing ions. The adsorption capacity of the covalently modified composite increased from 949.52 to 2157.44 mg/g. Compared with the amino-metal-organic framework, the modified composite contains more electron-rich groups as active sites, and forms charge transfer compounds with iodine to realize chemical adsorption. Through the simulated adsorption of ultra-high-pressure micro-jet, the material has certain working ability under high pressure, which provides a theoretical basis for the future recovery and utilization of iodine under high pressure.

Abstract:Radioactive iodine is a notorious pollutant in gas radioactive nuclear waste due to its radiation hazard, volatility, chemical toxicity, and high mobility. Therefore, developing a material with high efficiency-specific iodine capture is significant. Covalent organic framework(COF) has attracted significant attention as a new crystalline porous organic material. Due to its large specific surface and high chemical stability, it is an excellent alternative to adsorbents. Herein, we report a chemically stable two-dimensional COF(termed JUC-609) with specific adsorption of iodine. Adsorption experiments show that JUC-609 has an excellent iodine adsorption capacity as high as 5.9 g/g under 353 K and normal pressure condition, and iodine adsorption after multiple cycles is still maintained. Our study thus promotes the potential application of COFs in the field of environment-related applications.

Abstract:The efficient capture of radioactive iodine is of paramount importance due to its harmfulness. In this work, a new Th-based metal-organic framework (ECUT-Th-11) for iodine capture was reported. ECUT-Th-11 exhibited a relatively high capacity of capturing vapor iodine (2.03 g/g). Besides, the maximal adsorption capacity of iodine in a cyclohexane solution reaches 258.03 mg/g. All of the results demonstrated that ECUT-Th-11 could be a candidate material for the effective removal of waste iodine.

Abstract:We report a comparative study of the binding of I2 (iodine) in a pair of redox-active metal-organic framework (MOF) materials, MFM-300(VIII) and its oxidized, deprotonated analogue, MFM-300(VIV). Adsorption of I2 in MFM-300(VIII) triggers a host-to-guest charge-transfer, accompanied by a partial (∼30%) oxidation of the VIII centers in the host framework and formation of I3- species residing in the MOF channels. Importantly, this charge-transfer induces a significant enhancement in the electrical conductivity (Δσ = 700000) of I2@MFM-300(VIII/IV) in comparison to MFM-300(VIII). In contrast, no host-guest charge-transfer or apparent change in the conductivity was observed upon adsorption of I2 in MFM-300(VIV). High-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction of I2@MFM-300(VIII/IV) confirms the first example of self-aggregation of adsorbed iodine species (I2 and I3-) into infinite helical chains within a MOF.
Exploration of iodine adsorption performance of pyrene-based two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks

Abstract:Radioiodine (mainly 129I and 131I) is known to be dangerous nuclear waste due to its high toxicity, fast mobility and long radioactive half-life. As an emerging class of novel porous organic polymers, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have demonstrated tremendous application potential in the field of radioactive iodine capture because of their high specific surface area and tunable pore structure. Herein, three π-conjugated pyrene-based COFs, namely PyTTA-BPDA-COF, PyTTA-BPY-COF, and PyTTA-BT-COF, have been successfully prepared and used as highly efficient adsorbents for iodine capture. The experimental results show that the three COFs displayed excellent adsorption performance, with adsorption capacity of 5.03, 4.46, and 3.97 g g-1 for PyTTA-BPDA-COF, PyTTA-BPY-COF, and PyTTA-BT-COF, respectively. Additionally, the release rate of iodine-loaded COFs in methanol solution and recyclability were also impressive, demonstrating their potential for practical applications. The mechanism investigation reveals that both imine linkage and π-conjugated structure of the COFs may contribute to their high iodine adsorption capability. This work is instructive as a guide for designing and synthesizing COFs as a solid-phase adsorbent for iodine uptake.

Abstract:Radioactive iodine exhibits medical values in radiology, but its excessive emissions can cause environmental pollution. Thus, the capture of radioiodine poses significant engineering for the environment and medical radiology. The adsorptive capture of radioactive iodine by metal—organic frameworks (MOFs) has risen to prominence. In this work, a Th-based MOF (denoted as Th-BPYDC ) was structurally designed and synthesized, consisting of [Th 6 (μ 3 -O) 4 (μ 3 -OH) 4 (H 2 O) 6 ] 12+ clusters, abundant bipyridine units, and large cavities that allowed guest molecules diffusion and transmission. Th-BPYDC exhibited the uptake capacities of 2.23 g·g −1 and 312.18 mg·g −1 towards I 2 vapor and I 2 dissolved in cyclohexane, respectively, surpassing its corresponding analogue Th-UiO-67 . The bipyridine units boosted the adsorption performance, and Th-BPYDC showed good reusability with high stability. Our work thus opened a new way for the synthesis of MOFs to capture radioactive iodine.

[Cd(hsb-2)(tsbdc)]‧0.5DMF (HSB-W8) and Cd(hsb-2)(tsbdc) (HSB-W9), have been assembled from hydrogenated Schiff base ligand hsb-2 (1,2-bis(4′-pyridylmethylamino)-ethane), trans-stilbene-4,4-dicarboxylate (tsbdc), and Cd(NO 3 ) 2 via the diffusion method, which exhibit a two-dimensional and a twofold interpenetrated three-dimensional structures, respectively. Such isomers arise from the different conformations of hsb-2 ligands controlled by diffusion temperature. The π-electron-rich stilbene moieties render those Cd-MOFs ideal platforms for I 2 capture. The adsorption capacity of HSB-W8 and HSB-W9 in I 2 vapor at room temperature can reach up to 2.32 and 1.92 g/g, respectively, which are comparable to the best-performing MOF materials reported so far. Furthermore, the pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetic model, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra, Raman spectra analysis, density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and control experiments were performed to shed light on the host–guest interactions and the iodine adsorption mechanism. This work develops a rational strategy to design and synthesis functional MOF materials for iodine adsorbents.
