Abstract:This paper examines turbulent Rayleigh–Bénard convection in a two-dimensional square cavity with partially isothermal conducting plates on the horizontal walls. The study reveals that controlling the relative locations of the partially isothermal plates can accelerate or completely suppress the reversals of large-scale circulation. The heat transfer efficiency, which is characterised by the time-averaged Nusselt number, is generally higher than that of the traditional Rayleigh–Bénard convection, and can be further enhanced when the reversal is fully suppressed. The reversal in our cases is mainly caused by the competition between the two alternately growing ‘corner’ vortices, fed by the detaching plumes from the hot/cold plates. This differs from those reported in traditional Rayleigh–Bénard convection. Fourier mode decomposition of the kinetic energy, reflecting the diverse contributors, in the reversing cases further emphasises the distinction between the current system and traditional Rayleigh–Bénard convection. In addition, multiple states were observed where the conducting plates were positioned at specific relative locations and had different initial conditions. It has been observed that the difference in Nusselt numbers between the anticlockwise and clockwise states increases linearly with the distance between the upper cold and lower hot plates. Moreover, the analysis of the buoyancy moment and the stability of the primary roll structure suggests that the higher heat transfer efficiency between the two states is strongly linked to a more stable primary roll structure. This study presents a new approach for controlling flow reversal and improving heat transfer efficiency by modifying the non-global conducting boundary and initial conditions.

Abstract:We analyze the reversals of the large-scale flow in Rayleigh-Benard convection both through particle image velocimetry flow visualization and direct numerical simulations of the underlying Boussinesq equations in a (quasi-) two-dimensional, rectangular geometry of aspect ratio 1. For medium Prandtl number there is a diagonal large-scale convection roll and two smaller secondary rolls in the two remaining corners diagonally opposing each other. These corner-flow rolls play a crucial role for the large-scale wind reversal: They grow in kinetic energy and thus also in size thanks to plume detachments from the boundary layers up to the time that they take over the main, large-scale diagonal flow, thus leading to reversal. The Rayleigh vs Prandtl number space is mapped out. The occurrence of reversals sensitively depends on these parameters.
Discontinuous transition to shear flow turbulence

Abstract:Depending on the type of flow the transition to turbulence can take one of two forms, either turbulence arises from a sequence of instabilities, or from the spatial proliferation of transiently chaotic domains, a process analogous to directed percolation. Both scenarios are inherently continuous and hence the transformation from ordered laminar to fully turbulent fluid motion is only accomplished gradually with flow speed. Here we show that these established transition types do not account for the more general setting of shear flows subject to body forces. By attenuating spatial coupling and energy transfer, spatio-temporal intermittency is suppressed and with forcing amplitude the transition becomes increasingly sharp and eventually discontinuous. We argue that the suppression of the continuous range and the approach towards a first order, discontinuous scenario applies to a wide range of situations where in addition to shear, flows are subject to e.g. gravitational, centrifugal or electromagnetic forces.

Abstract:Viscous flows through pipes and channels are steady and ordered until, with increasing velocity, the laminar motion catastrophically breaks down and gives way to turbulence. How this apparently discontinuous change from low- to high-dimensional motion can be rationalized within the framework of the Navier--Stokes equations is not well understood. Exploiting geometrical properties of transitional channel flow we trace turbulence to far lower Reynolds numbers (Re) than previously possible and identify the complete path that reversibly links fully turbulent motion to an invariant solution. This precursor of turbulence destabilizes rapidly with Re, and the accompanying explosive increase in attractor dimension effectively marks the transition between deterministic and de facto stochastic dynamics.

The Unified Transition Stages in Linearly Stable Shear Flows

Abstract:Abrupt transition to turbulence may occur in pipe and channel flows at moderate flow rates, an unexpected event according to linear stability theory, and has been an open problem in fluid dynamics for more than a century. Extensive numerical simulations and statistical analyses of the plane-Poiseuille flow have been performed. A sequence of transition stages, which includes the equilibrium localized turbulence, the temporally persistent turbulence and the uniform turbulence, is identified. The spread of turbulent band is mainly caused by an oblique extension at moderate Reynolds numbers and band splitting at high Reynolds numbers. The small scale regime of a turbulent band coincides with the oblique swirl region of the mean flow in planes parallel to the walls. Furthermore, this transition scenario is shown quantitatively to be universal for channel and pipe flows in terms of a locally defined Reynolds number.

Abstract:Experimental and numerical flow visualizations were presented to study laminar mixed convection with flow reversal in the thermal entrance region of a horizontal channel. Flow reversal near the upper wall at the entrance region of the channel was visualized by a dye-injection method, and the mechanisms of flow reversal were discussed. The experimental results showed in coincident with the stream lines with three-dimensional numerical analysis. The effects of wall temperature and Reynolds number were also studied for the size of flow reversal region (i.e., the separation bubble).
Model for transitional turbulence in a planar shear flow

Abstract:A central obstacle to understanding the route to turbulence in wall-bounded flows is that the flows are composed of complex, highly fluctuating, and strongly nonlinear states. We address this challenge by deriving from the Navier-Stokes equations a simplified model that describes transitional turbulence in a planar setting. The Reynolds-averaged and turbulent-kinetic-energy equations are projected onto a minimal set of wall-normal modes and justified model closures are used for the Reynolds stresses and turbulent dissipation and transport. The model reproduces the oblique turbulent-laminar patterns ubiquitous in wall-bounded shear flows. It also captures the pattern wavelengths and angles, and the large-scale flow associated with both stationary patterns and growing turbulent spots. Patterns are shown to arise with decreasing Reynolds number via a linear instability of uniform turbulence. Linear analysis reveals implications for the critical angle at onset.

Abstract:The volatile transition from quiescent laminar to strongly fluctuating turbulent dynamics in shear flows remains only poorly understood despite its practical importance and more than a century of intense research. The theoretical understanding of the transition process has been complicated by the lack of a linear instability mechanism and additionally by a catastrophic collapse of turbulence which can occur after extremely long lifetimes. Turbulence close to onset is investigated experimentally in three different geometries: pipe, duct and channel flow. The reverse transition from turbulent to laminar flow is observed to be a general feature of shear flows. A critical point is uncovered at slightly higher flow rates, where the nature of the flow changes abruptly to the generic case of expanding turbulence. The critical exponent associated with this phase transition is found to be universal. This confirms a conjecture made over 20 years ago based on an analogy between fluid turbulence and discrete models in statistical physics.

Non-modal transient growth of disturbances in pulsatile and oscillatory pipe flow

Abstract:Laminar flows through pipes driven at steady, pulsatile or oscillatory rates undergo a sub-critical transition to turbulence. We carry out an extensive linear non-modal stability analysis of these flows and show that for sufficiently high pulsation amplitudes the stream-wise vortices of the classic lift-up mechanism are outperformed by helical disturbances exhibiting an Orr-like mechanism. In oscillatory flow, the energy amplification depends solely on the Reynolds number based on the Stokes-layer thickness and for sufficiently high oscillation frequency and Reynolds number, axisymmetric disturbances dominate. In the high-frequency limit, these axisymmetric disturbances are exactly similar to those recently identified by Biau (2016) for oscillatory flow over a flat plate. In all regimes of pulsatile and oscillatory pipe flow, the optimal helical and axisymmetric disturbances are triggered in the deceleration phase and reach their peaks in typically less than a period. Their maximum energy gain scales exponentially with Reynolds number of the oscillatory flow component. Our numerical computations unveil a plausible mechanism for the turbulence observed experimentally in pulsatile and oscillatory pipe flow.

Abstract:Direct numerical simulation of spanwise-rotation-driven flow transitions in viscoelastic plane Couette flow from a drag-reduced inertial to a drag-enhanced elasto-inertial turbulent flow state followed by full relaminarization is reported for the first time. Specifically, this novel flow transition begins with a drag-reduced inertial turbulent flow state at a low rotation number $0\leqslant Ro \leqslant 0.1$ , and then transitions to a rotation/polymer-additive-driven drag-enhanced inertial turbulent regime, $0.1\leqslant Ro \leqslant 0.3$ . In turn, the flow transitions to a drag-enhanced elasto-inertial turbulent state, $0.3\leqslant Ro \leqslant 0.9$ , and eventually relaminarizes at $Ro=1$ . In addition, two novel rotation-dependent drag enhancement mechanisms are proposed and substantiated. (1) The formation of large-scale roll cells results in enhanced convective momentum transport along with significant polymer elongation and stress generated in the extensionally dominated flow between adjacent roll cells at $Ro\leqslant 0.2$ . (2) Coriolis-force-generated turbulent vortices cause strong incoherent transport and homogenization of significant polymer stress in the bulk via their vortical circulations at $Ro=0.5 - 0.9$ .

Fluctuation-Induced Transitions in Anisotropic Two-Dimensional Turbulence

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) turbulence features an inverse energy cascade that produces large-scale flow structures such as large-scale vortices (LSVs) and unidirectional jets. We investigate the dynamics of such structures using extensive direct numerical simulations (DNS) of randomly forced, viscously damped 2D turbulence within a periodic rectangular (Cartesian) domain $[0,L_x]\times[0,L_y]$. LSVs form and dominate the system when the domain aspect ratio $\delta = L_x/L_y \approx 1$, while unidirectional jets predominate at $\delta \gtrsim 1.1$. At intermediate $\delta$, both structures are metastable, with noise-induced transitions between LSVs and jets. We derive and verify predictions for the dependence of kinetic energy E and flow polarity on the nondimensional control parameters. We further collect detailed statistics on the lifetimes of LSVs and jets from DNS runs that are up to 10738 viscous diffusive times long. The distribution of the lifetimes is consistent with that of a memoryless process. Our DNS show an exponential dependence of the mean lifetime on $\delta$. Mean lifetimes depend sensitively on the Reynolds number Re: as Re increases, the energy gap between LSV (lower E) and jet states (higher E) arising from anisotropic dissipation increases, leading to an approximately exponential increase in lifetimes with Re for both LSVs and jets. Similarly, as the forcing scale decreases, transitions become less frequent. We study the transitions in detail, revealing that they occur in two stages: an initial, rapid redistribution of kinetic energy by nonlinear triadic interactions deforms LSVs into jets or vice versa. In the second stage, the energy of the newly formed structure slowly adjusts to its associated equilibrium value on a longer, viscous timescale, producing hysteresis. Our findings shed new light on the dynamics of coherent large-scale structures in anisotropic turbulence.

Turbulent puffs in transitional pulsatile pipe flow at moderate pulsation amplitudes

Abstract:We show that, in the transitional regime of pulsatile pipe flow, at moderate-to-high amplitudes 0.5≲A≲1 , the first long-lived turbulent structures are localized and take the form of the puffs and slugs observed in statistically steady pipe flow. We perform direct numerical simulations at many pulsation frequencies (Wo), amplitudes, and Reynolds number (Re) and observe different dynamics of puffs and slugs. At certain flow parameters we find, using a causal analysis, that puffs actively make use of linear instabilities in the laminar Sexl-Womersley (SW) profile to survive the pulsation. Using all these lessons learned, we extend a low-order model by Barkley et al. [ Nature (London) 526 , 550 (2015)] to reproduce these dynamics. We find a good agreement between the extended model and our numerical results in a broad parametric space of pulsation amplitudes 0.5≲A≲1 , frequencies Wo≳5 and 2100≤Re≤3000 . With the help of our numerical results, causal analysis and model, we determine that turbulence production has two sources at these flow parameters: the mean shear as in statistically steady pipe flow and the instabilities of the instantaneous pulsatile mean profile. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevFluids.9.024601 ©2024 American Physical Society

Revisit the intrinsic features of flip-flopping flow behind side-by-side circular cylinders

Abstract:As one of the most intriguing wake patterns of two side-by-side circular cylinders at an intermediate gap spacing, the flip-flopping (FF) flow has attracted great attention of fundamental research interest. This FF flow is featured by the intermittently and randomly switching gap flow with correspondingly changing forces of the two cylinders. In this paper, we first present a partition map of the wake patterns behind two side-by-side circular cylinders and briefly introduce intrinsic features of each flow pattern. We focus on the FF flow aiming to explain: (i) the origin of the FF flow between laminar and turbulent regimes, (ii) their connections in different flow regimes, and (iii) mechanisms of the significantly varying flip-over time scale of the FF flows. In the laminar regime, we further divide the FF flow into the sub-classed I (FF1) and II (FF2), based on their different origins from the in-phase and anti-phase synchronized vortex shedding instabilities, respectively. By exploring the vortex interactions, we show that the FF flow in the turbulent regime has the same origin and similar vortex dynamics as the FF2 wake in the laminar regime, despite some minor disparities. Thus, a connection is established between the FF2 pattern in the laminar flow and the FF pattern in the turbulent flow. For the FF flow in the laminar regime (Re < 150-200), the mildly decreasing switching time, is several vortex shedding periods. However, for the FF flow in the weak turbulence regime (150-200 < Re < 1000-1700), the switching time scale increases significantly with Re owing to the increased vortex formation length. The FF in the strong turbulence regime (Re > 1000-1700) has a switching time scale of several orders of magnitude longer than the vortex shedding period, where the switching scale decreases gradually with Re due to the stronger Kelvin-Helmholtz vortices.

Abstract:In a turbulent fluid, the time-reversal symmetry is explicitly broken by viscosity, and spontaneously broken in the inviscid limit. Recently, Drivas [J. Nonlinear Sci. 29, 65 (2019).JNSCEK0938-897410.1007/s00332-018-9476-8] proved the equivalence of two different local indicators of time irreversibility: (i) an Eulerian one, based on regularity properties of the velocity field [Duchon and Robert, Nonlinearity 13, 249 (2000).NONLE50951-771510.1088/0951-7715/13/1/312]; (ii) a Lagrangian one, based on symmetry properties of the trajectories under time reversal [Jucha et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 054501 (2014).PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.113.054501]. We test this equivalence in a turbulent Von Kármán experiment at a resolution of the order of the Kolmogorov scale using a high resolution 4D-PTV technique. We use the equivalence to perform the first joined Eulerian-Lagrangian exploration of the dynamics leading to time irreversibility, and find that it is linked with vortex interaction, suggesting a link between irreversibility and singularity.
Emergent Flows, Irreversibility and Unsteady Effects in Asymmetric and Looped Geometries

Abstract:Fluid transport networks are important in many natural settings and engineering applications, from animal cardiovascular and respiratory systems to plant vasculature to plumbing networks and chemical plants. Understanding how network topology, connectivity, internal boundaries and other geometrical aspects affect the global flow state is a challenging problem that depends on complex fluid properties characterized by different length and time scales. The study of flow in micro-scale networks focuses on low Reynolds numbers where small volumes of fluids move at slow speeds. The flow physics at these scales is governed by the Stokes equation, which is linear. This linearity property allows for relatively simple theoretical and computational solutions that greatly aid in the understanding, modeling and designing of micro-scale networks. At larger scales and faster flow rates, macrofluidic networks are also important but the flow physics is quite different. The underlying Navier-Stokes equation is nonlinear, theoretical results are few, simulations are challenging, and the mapping between geometry and desired flow objectives are all much more complex. The phenomenology for such high-Reynolds-number or inertially-dominated flows is well documented and well-studied: Flows are retarded in thin boundary layers near solid surfaces; such flows are sensitive to geometry and tend to separate from surfaces; and vortices, wakes, jets and unsteadiness abound. The counter-intuitive nature of inertial flows is exemplified by the breakdown of reversibility. This dissertation explores two general ways of how rectified flows emerge in macrofluidic networks as a consequence of irreversibility and unsteady effects: When branches or channels of a network have asymmetric internal geometry and the second when a network contains loops.

Experimental Observation of Flow Reversal in Thin Liquid Film Flow Falling on an Inclined Plate

Abstract:A customized particle image velocimetry/planar laser induced fluorescence (PIV/PLIF) experimental method, aiming to capture transient hydrodynamics of solitary waves of inertia-dominated falling liquid films, is presented in this paper. A novel PIV/PLIF technique, which only uses one camera to capture simultaneously both particle image and fluorescence, and meanwhile a post-processing imaging method is also developed, which is able to simultaneously measure both internal velocity field in film and its topology. To validate the fidelity of the novel PIV/PLIF technique, a comparison between experimental results of streamwise velocity profile and film thickness and that of the Nusselt’s prediction at low Reynold number is carried out, and in addition, integral continuity is checked for transient wavy film, both of which shows that they are in good agreement. Based on experimental velocity fields and film topology, pressure distribution inside film is derived with the Poisson equation. Considering characteristics of traveling waves, the experimental results are presented respectively in spatial mode and temporal mode. In spatial mode, capillary wave dynamics are demonstrated out of velocity field, film topology and pressure distribution, which reveals that flow reversal occurs at capillary troughs. In temporal mode, the mechanism of flow reversal at capillary troughs is scrutinized on the basis of high-frequency velocity sampling and the derived pressure gradient. It is shown that flow reversal at capillary troughs is triggered due to occurrence of positive pressure gradient at the back side of the capillary wave crest, rather than the trough upstream as stated by the previous researchers. By elucidating the dynamics of flow reversal, mechanisms for the upper limit of Reynold number with respect to flow reversal underneath capillary wave trough were proposed, which might be the gradually saturated deceleration from the capillary curvature and shorten deceleration duration determined by the wave speed and capillary wave length. Our results should be of interest for optimization of the mass transport model of falling liquid films and shed light on the revealing of flow reversal mechanism.

Abstract:In three-dimensional turbulent flows, the flux of energy from large to small scales breaks time symmetry. We show here that this irreversibility can be quantified by following the relative motion of several Lagrangian tracers. We find by analytical calculation, numerical analysis, and experimental observation that the existence of the energy flux implies that, at short times, two particles separate temporally slower forwards than backwards, and the difference between forward and backward dispersion grows as t(3). We also find the geometric deformation of material volumes, defined by four points spanning an initially regular tetrahedron, to show sensitivity to the time reversal with an effect growing linearly in t. We associate this with the structure of the strain rate in the flow.

Abstract:Low Reynolds number turbulence in wall-bounded shear flows en route to laminar flow takes the form of spatially intermittent turbulent structures. In plane shear flows, these appear as a regular pattern of alternating turbulent and quasi-laminar flow. Both the physical and the spectral energy balance of a turbulent-laminar pattern in plane Couette flow are computed and compared to those of uniform turbulence. In the patterned state, the mean flow is strongly modulated and is fuelled by two mechanisms: primarily, the nonlinear self-interaction of the mean flow (via mean advection), and secondly, the extraction of energy from turbulent fluctuations (via negative spectral production, associated with an energy transfer from small to large scales). Negative production at large scales is also found in the uniformly turbulent state. Important features of the energy budgets are surveyed as a function of $Re$ through the transition between uniform turbulence and turbulent-laminar patterns.

Abstract:The transition from a chaotic to a periodic oscillatory state can be smooth or abrupt in real-world turbulent systems. Although there have been several mathematical studies, the occurrence of abrupt transitions in real-world systems such as turbulent reactive flow systems is not well understood. A turbulent reactive flow system consists of the flame, the acoustic field, and the hydrodynamic field interacting nonlinearly. Generally, as the Reynolds number is increased, a laminar flow becomes turbulent, and the range of time scales associated with the flow broadens. Yet, as the Reynolds number is increased in a turbulent reactive flow system, a single dominant time scale emerges in the acoustic pressure oscillations, indicated by its loss of multifractality. For such smooth and abrupt transitions from chaos to order, we study the evolution of correlated and uncorrelated dynamics between the acoustic pressure and the heat release rate oscillations in the spatiotemporal domain of the turbulent reactive system. The correlated dynamics that add or remove energy from the acoustic field are defined as conformists and contrarians, respectively. The uncorrelated dynamics, neither adds nor removes energy is defined as disorder. Conformist dynamics dominate the contrarian dynamics as order emerges from chaos. We discover that the spatial extent of the disordered dynamics plays a critical role in deciding the nature of the transition. During the smooth transition, we observe a significant presence of disordered dynamics in the spatial domain. In contrast, abrupt transitions are accompanied by the disappearance of disordered dynamics from the spatial domain.
