Abstract:A new type of metallic electromagnetic structure has been developed that is characterized by having high surface impedance. Although it is made of continuous metal, and conducts dc currents, it does not conduct ac currents within a forbidden frequency band. Unlike normal conductors, this new surface does not support propagating surface waves, and its image currents are not phase reversed. The geometry is analogous to a corrugated metal surface in which the corrugations have been folded up into lumped-circuit elements, and distributed in a two-dimensional lattice. The surface can be described using solid-state band theory concepts, even though the periodicity is much less than the free-space wavelength. This unique material is applicable to a variety of electromagnetic problems, including new kinds of low-profile antennas.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to develop a new type of metal electromagnetic structure, which is characterized by high surface impedance. Although this material is made of continuous metal and can conduct electricity, it does not conduct alternating current within a specific frequency range. Unlike ordinary conductors, the surface of this new material does not support the propagation of surface waves, and its image current will not have a phase reversal. By folding the groove structure on the traditional metal surface into lumped - circuit elements and distributing them in a two - dimensional lattice, this surface can be described by the concepts of solid - state band theory, even if its period is much smaller than the wavelength in free space. This unique material is suitable for various electromagnetic problems, including the design of new low - profile antennas. Specifically, the main problems mentioned in the paper are: 1. **Suppressing surface waves**: On traditional metal surfaces, surface waves can lead to problems such as reduced radiation efficiency and multipath interference. The paper proposes a high - impedance surface that can effectively suppress these surface waves within a specific frequency range, thereby improving antenna performance. 2. **Improving antenna efficiency**: Traditional metal grounds will short - circuit antennas close to them, resulting in low radiation efficiency. However, due to its special electromagnetic properties, the high - impedance surface can still maintain high - efficiency radiation performance when the antenna is in close contact with the surface. 3. **Reducing mutual coupling**: When multiple antennas share the same ground, surface currents can cause unnecessary mutual coupling. The high - impedance surface can reduce this mutual coupling and improve the overall performance of the system. 4. **Achieving new electromagnetic applications**: This high - impedance surface is not only suitable for antenna design, but can also be used in other application scenarios where the propagation of electromagnetic waves needs to be controlled, such as electromagnetic shielding, microwave devices, etc. Through the above innovations, the paper aims to provide a new method to optimize the performance of electromagnetic devices, especially in high - frequency applications.
