Abstract:The ecological constraints model is well supported by data from most frugivorous primates; however, the prediction power of the model is weak for folivorous primates. From September 2016 to August 2017, we collected comparative data on time budgets, daily path lengths and diets of four groups of white-headed langurs ( Trachypithecus leucocephalus ), including two large groups (G-DS and G-ZWY) and two small groups (G-LZ and G-NN) in Chongzuo White-Headed Langur National Nature Reserve, Guangxi Province, Southwest China. The aim was to obtain evidence of foraging competition and to test the ecological constraints model on this highly folivorous primate in its karst habitat. The results showed that langurs in the larger groups spent more time traveling, less time resting, and had a longer average daily path length than those in the small groups. Diet composition and dietary diversity were not significantly different between the large and small groups. Our study demonstrates that langurs from large groups suffer scramble competition in limestone forests and supports the validity of the ecological constraints model for folivores.

Factors Affecting the Ranging Behavior of White-headed Langurs (Trachypithecus leucocephalus)

Abstract:Ranging behavior is an important aspect of animal behavior that researchers use to investigate ecological influences on individual behavior. We studied the influence of diet, water resources, and sleeping sites on the ranging behavior of 2 groups of white-headed langurs (Trachypithecus leucocephalus) in a limestone habitat at Fusui Nature Reserve, China, between August 2007 and July 2008. During the study period, the total home range sizes for the 2 focal groups were 23.8 ha and 33.8 ha, the mean daily path lengths were 491 m and 512 m, and leaves accounted for 83.4% and 91.0% of the diet, which are well within the range of variation reported for other Trachypithecus. One focal group traveled significantly longer distances in the rainy season months than in the dry season months. This variation may be related to the seasonal difference in food availability and diet. The langurs did not use their home ranges uniformly, and 50% of their activities occurred within 11% (group 1) and 20% (group 2) of their home ranges. The most heavily used quadrats in the home ranges were located near the most frequently used sleeping sites. Moreover, the core areas (>70% of location records) of both groups’ home ranges included ≥1 permanent water pool. The langurs ventured to these pools for drinking when surface water became scarce in the dry season. These results suggest that sleeping sites and water scarcity may be significant influences on the ranging behavior of white-headed langurs in limestone habitat.

Abstract:Information on positional behavior contributes to the understanding of the ecological adaptation mechanisms in animals. We collected data on the positional behavior of white-headed langurs (Trachypithecus leucocephalus) at the Guangxi Chongzuo White-Headed Langur National Nature Reserve from September 2016 to August 2017 via instantaneous scan sampling method. This study aimed to examine the importance of positional behavior flexibility in limestone forests characterized by seasonal variations in climate and food resources. Our results indicated that langurs adopted leaping (47.92% ± 5.50%) and vertical climbing (40.13% ± 6.20%) as their predominant locomotor modes and sitting (83.08% ± 4.70%) as their predominant posture. Their positional behavior exhibited marked seasonal variations. More specifically, langurs used quadrupedal walking more frequently during the dry season than during the rainy months. In the stationary state, they sat more frequently during the dry season, whereas they laid and suspended more often during the rainy season. Their positional behavior was affected by fruit availability, day length, and temperature. Quadrupedal walking increased with the decrease in fruit availability, whereas leaping was positively correlated with fruit availability. Moreover, sitting was positively correlated with average temperature but negatively correlated with day length. Lying was also negatively correlated with temperature but positively correlated with day length. We conclude that white-headed langurs adapt to limestone forests with positional behavior flexibility in response to seasonality. Our research provides evidence of the effects of food availability, ambient temperature, and day length on the positional behavior of white-headed langurs, highlighting the need to understand their behavioral ecology and the influence of ecological factors on behavioral adaptation.

Abstract:Our findings underline the importance of these ecological factors on habitat use for white‐headed langurs and the need to understand how ecological seasonality and group sizes impact their behaviors in the limestone forest. Understanding how animals cope with habitat‐specific environmental factors can assist in species conservation management. We studied the habitat use of four groups (two large and two small groups) of white‐headed langurs (Trachypithecus leucocephalus) living in the forest of southwest Guangxi, China between September 2016 and February 2017 via instantaneous scan sampling. Our results showed that the langurs primarily used hillsides (55.91% ± 6.47%), followed by cliffs (29.70% ± 5.48%), hilltops (7.26% ± 3.55%), flat zones (6.99% ± 6.58%), and farmlands (0.14% ± 0.28%). The langurs moved most frequently on hillsides (49.35% ± 6.97%) and cliffs (35.60% ± 9.17%). The hillsides were more frequently used (66.94% ± 7.86%) during feeding, and the langurs increased the use of hilltops during the rainy season, and the use of cliffs in the dry season. The langurs frequently rested on hillsides (49.75% ± 8.16%) and cliffs (38.93% ± 8.02%). The larger langur group used cliffs more frequently when moving and resting, whereas the small langur group used hillsides more frequently while resting. Langurs in all groups avoided the flat zones for feeding. Their use of habitat reflected the balancing of foraging needs, thermoregulation, and predator avoidance. We conclude that the ecological factors are determinants of habitat use for white‐headed langurs. Our findings suggest that conservation efforts should focus on protecting the vegetation on the hillsides and restoring the vegetation on the flat zones.

Abstract:Food habits are important factors in the adaptation of wild nonhuman primates. White-headed langurs (Trachypithecus leucocephalus) are endemic to heavily fragmented limestone forests and adapt to unique living environments via flexible food selection strategies. In this study, we compared the dietary data for white-headed langurs living in Chongzuo White-headed Langur National Nature Reserve in 2013 and 2016 to evaluate interannual variations in diet. Our results indicated that young leaves were the main food source for langurs, accounting for 52.4% (SD 25.4%) and 65.2% (SD 22.4%) of their diet in 2013 and 2016, respectively. The pattern of plant part consumption was similar between the two years. The consumption of young leaves varied with the availability of young leaves, whereas the consumption of mature leaves was negatively correlated with young leaf availability. The consumption of plant species and diet diversity were higher in 2013 than in 2016. In both 2013 and 2016, although diet diversity varied with the consumption of mature leaves, it was negatively correlated with the consumption and availability of young leaves. Dietary interannual variation is likely to either be linked to phenological variations or indicate that white-headed langurs have a flexible ecological adaptation coping with habitat fragmentation.

Abstract:The critically endangered white-headed langur (Trachypithecus leucocephalus) is confined to fragmented karst forests of southwest Guangxi Province, China. A lack of information on the influence of habitat fragmentation on langur behavior has prevented a comprehensive understanding of their ranging behavior and the development of effective langur conservation strategies. We collected comparative data on time budgets, daily path lengths, home range and diets of four langur groups inhabiting the lightly fragmented Fusui forest (G1, G2) and the more heavily fragmented Chongzuo forest (G3, G4). The aim was to explore the effect of this fragmentation on langur ranging behavior. Our results showed that the Fusui groups spent more time on moving and less time on feeding and playing than the Chongzuo groups. Daily path lengths were 472.4–536.1 m for the Fusui groups and 449.6–480.7 m for the Chongzuo groups, indicating no marked inter-site variation. The Fusui groups occupied much larger home ranges (23.8–33.8 ha) than the Chongzuo groups (14.5–15.8 ha). However, all groups had similar monthly home ranges. Diets significantly differed among langur groups. The Fusui groups consumed more young leaves and had much lower diet diversity compared with the Chongzuo groups. Our findings indicate that habitat fragmentation is one of the crucial determinants of white-headed langur ranging behavior because fragmentation reduces and restricts the home range. Langurs in fragmented habitat adopt an energy conservation strategy characterized by devoting more time to feeding and less time to moving, with a smaller home range and consumption of more plant species. We argue that linking fragmented forests with corridors should be considered a priority in a wider and comprehensive longer term langur population conservation and habitat management strategy.

Abstract:Our findings underscore the impact of habitat fragmentation on the white‐headed langurs' diets, emphasizing the importance of maintaining native vegetation and reducing human disturbance in developing effective conservation strategies for langurs. Information about wildlife diets is crucial for comprehending how species adapt to varying environments in fragmented habitats and for developing effective conservation strategies. White‐headed langurs (Trachypithecus leucocephalus) are exclusively found in fragmented limestone forests in southwestern China. To investigate the effects of habitat fragmentation on langurs' diets, we collected published dietary data and relevant environmental factors spanning from 1996 to 2021 at two regions with different degrees of fragmentation (Banli > Bapen), from 10 studies (three of Banli and seven of Bapen). The results demonstrated that the diets of white‐headed langurs were significantly influenced by environmental factors, including habitat fragmentation, annual rainfall, and mean annual temperature. Food item diversity index was significantly and positively affected by the fragmentation index, the higher fragmentation the langurs suffered, the more diverse food items they consumed. Besides, fruit consumption was negatively influenced by annual rainfall and the consumption of other items was influenced by mean annual temperature. Notably, although there are no significant differences in the feeding proportions of food items or food item diversity indices were observed between the Banli and Bapen groups, the Banli groups extensively consumed ground‐supported kudzu (Pueraria montana var. lobata), a plant rarely recorded in the dietary preferences of the Bapen groups, implying that the large plants likely lacking in the fragmented limestone forests. Our findings provide evidence of the major impact of habitat fragmentation on the dietary composition of white‐headed langurs, highlighting the need of considering the possibility that the habitats of the white‐headed langurs have all undergone extreme fragmentation, inferring the conservation efforts should prioritize protecting native vegetation and reducing human disturbance.

Abstract:We collected nighttime behavioral data by observing a group of white-headed langurs ( Trachypithecus leucocephalus ), comprising 16 individuals in a limestone forest in Guangxi Chongzuo National Nature Reserve, China, from October 2016 to August 2017. We recorded various aspects of the langurs' nighttime behavior, including the duration of entering/leaving sleeping sites, the duration of remaining in sleeping sites, the duration and frequency of movement, and the number and size of sleeping clusters in sleeping sites. The primary aim was to investigate thermoregulation strategy in these primates at night. By applying thermoregulation hypotheses, we aimed to elucidate the underlying factors driving seasonal changes in white-headed langurs' nighttime behavior. All individuals took 7.53 ± 1.16 min entering sleeping sites, and took 9.70 ± 3.05 min leaving sleeping sites, which could be a response to predation risk. Movement throughout the night was observed in most individuals. Sleeping clusters were formed by white-headed langurs during the night, with larger clusters sizes occurring in the cold season (4.68 ± 0.69) compared with the hot season (3.59 ± 0.77). additionally, langurs prolonged their stay in sleeping sites during the cold season (12.36 ± 0.63 h) compared with the hot season (11.20 ± 0.63 h), potentially as a thermoregulation strategy to combat low temperature. Our findings indicate that temperature, rainfall, day length and food availability influence the nighttime behavior of white-headed langurs, highlighting the importance of ecological variables in determining primate nocturnal behavioral responses. The observed changes in white-headed langurs' nighttime behavior strongly support their inclination toward behavioral strategies that minimize thermoregulation costs in limestone forests.

Abstract:The socioecology of white-headed langurs (Trachypithecus leucocephalus) was studied in Fusui Precious Animal Reserve, Guangxi, China, in 1997/1998. Habitat quality was classified according to the level of human disturbance. Plant species diversity increased with habitat quality. Important foods for the langurs occurred more in high-quality habitat. Home range size varied from 28 to 48 ha, and the home range area per individual decreased as habitat quality increased. Small polygynous langur groups had poorly defended ranges, but large groups defended their ranges intensively. Only harem males were involved in group defence, apparently competing for females by defending their habitat. High-quality habitat was more attractive to females; accordingly, group size increased significantly with habitat quality.

Abstract:Within a species, habitat quality may be a factor causing different activity budgets between populations. The habitat of white-headed langurs (Trachypithecus leucocephalus) has been seriously disturbed in Fusui Rare and Precious Animal Nature Reserve, China, where we carried out a study of their socioecology from September 1997 to September 1998. We collected data on langur activity budgets from the main population located in the central part of a group of limestone hills. We classified habitat quality into 4 grades according to the extent of human disturbance. We showed that the two main study groups of white-headed langurs spent on average 50% of time resting, 13% feeding, 18% moving (including foraging), 11% grooming, and 7% playing. Langur time budgets showed no significant seasonal change, but they differed among different sex-age classes. Infants and juveniles spent about 20.3% of time playing, whereas adults spent only 0.2% playing. The group in high quality habitat engaged less in feeding and more in playing than the group in low quality habitat did. Habitat quality influenced the playing time of young white-headed langurs and may be vital to their successful maturation.

Abstract:François' langur Trachypithecus francoisi is a threatened monkey species whose populations have been declining rapidly during the last four decades, and at the same time, there has been a severe fragmentation of the species' habitat. Using focal animal sampling and continuous recording, we studied food selection of a group of François' langur in a small fragmented habitat in the county of Fusui, Guangxi Province, China. We also analysed the vegetation data obtained within their home range using quadrat sampling. The langurs consumed a higher proportion of leaves but from a smaller number of plant species than their conspecifics in continuous habitats. They selectively utilised specific species as food sources, and they spent 61.6% of their feeding time on four staple species, whilst only 38.4% of their feeding time was spent on the 36 plant species that were either seasonally or rarely consumed food items. Although our sample sizes were small and from a single group, our results suggest that, similar to other colobine species, François' langurs in a fragmented habitat are highly selective feeders. Although the langurs appeared reasonably tolerant and well adapted to cope with habitat fragmentation in the short‐term, they are still to be considered as highly vulnerable as their survival depends on a small number of food plants, which themselves could be threatened by other factors.
Population dynamics and conservation status of the white-headed langur in the Chongzuo forest fragments, Guangxi, China

Abstract:We present the results of two population surveys conducted 10 years apart (December 2010–February 2011 and December 2020–January 2021) of the Critically Endangered white-headed langur Trachypithecus leucocephalus in the Chongzuo White-Headed Langur National Nature Reserve, Guangxi Province, China. In the first survey, we recorded 818 individuals in 105 groups and 16 solitary adult males. In the second survey, we recorded 1,183 individuals in 128 groups and one solitary adult male. As a result of government policies, poaching for food and traditional medicine is no longer a primary threat to these langurs. However, severe forest loss and fragmentation caused by human activities could limit any future increase of this langur population.

Abstract:We studied the socioecology of white-headed langurs (Trachypithecus leucocephalus) from September 1997 to September 1998 in Fusui Precious Animal Reserve, SW Guangxi, China. We collected data on climate, phenology of food plant species, and foods consumed by langurs living in habitats with different levels of human disturbance. Feeding records showed that the most food is from less common plant species. Young leaves were the staple food item in all langur groups, and consumption correlates with availability. Consumption of mature leaves is not significantly correlated with their availability, but the langurs fed on them, and other food items such as fruits and seeds, when the availability of young leaves was low. Langurs in different areas had broadly similar diets, but they varied most in the proportion of supplementary items such as fruit. Groups in more disturbed habitat did not increase the overall proportion of mature leaves in their diet, but instead maintained their intake of young leaves from a greater diversity of species, and incorporated more immature fruit. Conservationists should direct efforts toward protection of rare plant species providing preferred food items, particularly supplementary foods at times when, and in areas where, preferred food items are less available.

Abstract:Investigating gut microbiota is important for understanding the physiological adaptation of animals to food availability changes in fragmented habitats and consequently providing new ideas for the conservation of endangered wild animals. In this study, we explored the gut microbiota of the endangered white-headed black langur ( Trachypithecus leucocephalus ), which is endemic to the limestone forests of Southwest Guangxi, China, to understand its adaptation strategies to seasonal changes in habitat using 16S rRNA sequencing. Our results revealed significant seasonal variations in the gut microbiota of white-headed black langurs. In particular, the alpha diversity was higher in the rainy season than in the dry season, and the beta diversity was significantly different between the two seasons. At the phylum level, the relative abundance of Firmicutes, Actinobacteriota, and Proteobacteria was higher in the dry season than that in the rainy season, whereas that of Bacteroidetes, Spirochaetota, and Cyanobacteria was significantly higher in the rainy season than that in the dry season. At the family level, Oscillospiraceae and Eggerthellaceae were more abundant in the dry season than in the rainy season, whereas Lachnospiraceae, Ruminococcaceae, and Monoglobaceae were more abundant in the rainy season than in the dry season. These results could have been obtained due to seasonal changes in the diet of langurs in response to food plant phenology. In addition, the neutral community model revealed that the gut microbiota assembly of these langurs was dominated by deterministic processes and was more significantly affected by ecological factors in the dry season than in the rainy season, which could be linked to the higher dependence of these langurs on mature leaves in the dry season. We concluded that the seasonal variations in the gut microbiota of white-headed black langurs occurred in response to food plant phenology in their habitat, highlighting the importance of microbiota in responding to fluctuating ecological factors and adapting to seasonal dietary changes.

Abstract:We studied the ecology of white-headed langurs(Trachypithecus leucocephalus) in Fusui Precious Animal Reserve, Guangxi, China, in 1997/1998 and conducted surveys of them in 1996–1997 and 2003. We collected data on vegetation fragments and the activities of white-headed langurs at different levels on limestone hills. The langurs selected less fragmented habitats with less human disturbance. They spent ca. 60% of the day at lower levels of the hills during maintenance activities, including feeding. When humans were absent, the langurs even came to the ground. The hills themselves were used as a refuge from human disturbance but were not otherwise essential habitat. Results of this study have implications for improving conservation management for the langurs.

Abstract:Studies of animal ranging patterns and the influencing ecological factors are useful for understanding the relationship between aspects of animal behavior and ecology. In a year-long study, we investigated the ranging behavior and other determining factors for a group of Francois' langur in an isolated habitat of approximately 25.7 ha in Fusui Reserve, China. The Francois' langur home range was estimated to be 15.3 ha, covering similar to 60% of their total habitat. The mean yearly day range length estimate was 802.5 m (SD = 295.5 m). Langurs changed sleeping sites approximately every 3 days, resulting in increases in the amount of grid cells used and the range length. Food availability of flowers and fruits were seasonal, whereas both mature and immature leaves of most trees were perennial. Ranging behavior was not significantly correlated with the availability of mature leaves, immature leaves, buds, fruits (ripe and unripe fruits) or seeds (p > 0.05). These results suggested that variations in food type availability were not factors influencing ranging behavior for this langur group, whereas sleeping site changes, and probably predation avoidance, are factors that influence the ranging patterns of the langur group.

Abstract:Asian leaf-eating monkeys have flexible, environmentally adaptable feeding strategies. The diet and food choices of white-headed langurs (Trachypithecus leucocephalus) have, however, not yet been studied in the Nongguan Karst Hills in China, where one of the two main surviving populations of this endangered species lives. From 2000 to 2002 inclusive, we adopted an innovative video playback analysis method to identify the food species used by the langurs and to calculate the corresponding feeding frequency for each species. The video-aided methodology was shown to be efficient. It provided high-quality images, and the plant species could be identified in 98.3% of the feeding records. Based on this analysis, we found that the langurs in Nongguan fed on 70 species of plants, among which 24 were identified as their staple food species. The cumulative curve for the staple food species reached a plateau at 255 (43.7%) feeding records. This result indicated that most of the langurs' staple food species had been identified by the analysis. Copyright (C) 2011 S. Karger AG, Basel

Abstract:François' langurs in Encheng National Nature Reserve ate a higher number of food species in Encheng when compared with the other geographic populations, and they maintained a high level of food diversity and ate more vines. Moreover, they were highly selective in their use of vegetation in their home range. The findings support that François' langurs adjust their feeding behavior to cope with seasonal and micro‐variations in their dietary requirements and to adapt to their particular environment. Limestone forests are an unusual habitat for primates, especially fragmented limestone habitats. However, while some research has been conducted on François' langurs (Trachypithecus francois) in these habitats, there is still a need to improve the understanding of their behavioral adaptations to the fragmented limestone habitat. We collected data on the diet of François' langurs in a fragmented limestone habitat in Encheng National Nature Reserve, southwestern Guangxi, China using instantaneous scanning sampling, and their feeding adaptations to the fragmented forest were examined. The results indicated that a total of 101 species of plants were consumed by the langurs. They also fed on two non‐plant components, including cliff minerals and at least one species of insect. The langurs ate a higher number of food species in Encheng when compared with the other geographic populations, and they maintained a high level of food diversity and ate more vines. Moreover, they were highly selective in their use of vegetation in their home range, and fewer plants provided a high‐quality food source. During the season when food resources were scarce, the consumption of fruits and young leaves decreased as their availability decreased. This led to the use of other food components, such as mature leaves and seeds. The findings support that François' langurs adjust their feeding behavior to cope with seasonal and micro‐variations in their dietary requirements and to adapt to their particular environment.

Abstract:Various factors including nutrients impact the food selection of animals. The studies of food nutrient and its influence on animal's food selection have important implication to the ex-situ conservation of wildlife since we need to know how much nutrients they need for their survival and reproduction in captivity conditions. In order to determine the food crude protein content and the influence on food selection of animal in karst habitat, we studied the feeding behavioral of a group of François' langur (Trachypithecus francoisi) in a severely fragmented habitat from January to December 2006 in Fusui County, Guangxi, China via focal animal sampling and continuous recording technique. In total 190 food samples belonging to 40 species were collected, the monthly food samples ranging from 9 in October to 25 in January and February. In January to March 2007 the crude protein content of the samples were determined by KDY-9830 Kjeldahl. The results showed that langurs used immature leaves through out the year, while mature leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds were seasonally used. The life forms of the foods included tree, shrub, liana and herbage. Herbage was seasonally used and the other food items from other three life forms were used all the seasons. The total averaged food crude protein content was 12.7%, the monthly food crude protein content ranged from 19.1% in April to 5.4% in June. There was no significant difference between the crude protein content of the first half year and the second half year (z = - 1.28, P = 0.20), nor did rainy season and drought season(z = -1.22, P = 0.22). The crude protein content varied with food items, immature leaves had the highest crude protein content of 13.7%, followed by mature leaves and flowers, accounting for 13.0% and 12.1%, respectively. Fruits had the lowest crude protein content, only accounting for 9.6%. Among the crude protein content of life forms, lianas had the largest crude protein content of 14.1%, trees and shrubs had the second crude protein content of 11.3%, respectively, and herbage had the lowest crude protein content of 10. 1%. The spearman correlation test showed that there were no significant correlationship between feeding duration of food items and their corresponding crude protein content (P>0.05). It suggested therefore that the crude protein content of food items was not the factor influencing the food selection of langurs in the habitat. Both physiological and behavioural factors may contribute to the crude protein requirement and intake in leaf-eating langur, which need further research.
Gut microbiota of white-headed black langurs (Trachypithecus leucocephalus) in responses to habitat fragmentation

Abstract:The white-headed black langur ( Trachypithecus leucocephalus ) is exclusively distributed in the karst forests and is critically endangered owing to habitat fragmentation. Gut microbiota can provide physiological data for a comprehensive study of the langur’s response to human disturbance in the limestone forest; to date, data on spatial variations in the langurs’ gut microbiota are limited. In this study, we examined intersite variations in the gut microbiota of white-headed black langurs in the Guangxi Chongzuo White-headed Langur National Nature Reserve, China. Our results showed that langurs in the Bapen area with a better habitat had higher gut microbiota diversity. In the Bapen group, the Bacteroidetes (13.65% ± 9.73% vs. 4.75% ± 4.70%) and its representative family, Prevotellaceae, were significantly enriched. In the Banli group, higher relative abundance of Firmicutes (86.30% ± 8.60% vs. 78.85% ± 10.35%) than the Bapen group was observed. Oscillospiraceae (16.93% ± 5.39% vs. 16.13% ± 3.16%), Christensenellaceae (15.80% ± 4.59% vs. 11.61% ± 3.60%), and norank_o__Clostridia_UCG-014 (17.43% ± 6.64% vs. 9.78% ± 3.83%) were increased in comparison with the Bapen group. These intersite variations in microbiota diversity and composition could be accounted for by differences in food resources caused by fragmentation. Furthermore, compared with the Banli group, the community assembly of gut microbiota in the Bapen group was influenced by more deterministic factors and had a higher migration rate, but the difference between the two groups was not significant. This might be attributed to the serious fragmentation of the habitats for both groups. Our findings highlight the importance of gut microbiota response for the integrity of wildlife habitats and the need in using physiological indicators to study the mechanisms by which wildlife responds to human disturbances or ecological variations.
