Abstract:Polarized deep inelastic scattering is considered in QCD using the diagrammatic approach. Ladder diagrams are summed via the Bethe-Salpeter equation. Comparisons with results based on Wilson expansion methods are made.

Abstract:We have carried out a NLO analysis of the world data on polarized DIS in the MS/bare scheme. We have studied two models of the parametrizations of the input parton densities, the first due to Brodsky, Burkhardt and Schmidt (BBS) which gives a simultaneous parametrization for both the polarized and unpolarized densities and in which the counting rules are strictly imposed, the second in which the input polarized densities are written in terms of the unpolarized ones in the generic form Deltaq(x)=f(x)q(x) with f(x) some simple smooth function. In both cases a good fit to the polarized data is achieved. As expected the polarized data do not allow a precise determination of the polarized gluon density. Concerning the polarized sea-quark densities, these are fairly well determined in the BBS model because of the interplay of polarized and unpolarized data, whereas in the second model, where only the polarized data are relevant, the polarized sea-quark densities are largely undetermined.

Abstract:Following Ioffe's method of QCD sum rules the structure functions F2(x) for deep inelastic ep and en scattering are calculated. Valence u-quark and d-quark distributions are obtained in the range 0.1 ≲ x <0.4 and compared with data. In the case of polarized targets the structure function g1(x) and the asymmetry [σ(12) − σ(32)]/[σ(12) + σ(32)] are calculated. The latter is in satisfactory agreement in sign and magnitude with experiments for x in the range 0.1< x < 0.4.

The Polarized Deep Inelastic Lepton-Nucleon Scattering with Charged Current at Future Colliders

Abstract:The new ways the extraction of the polarized structure function from the measurable asymmetries of the processes DIS with charged current are proposed. In QCD the spin of the nucleon is 1 1 2° = 2°�E + �g + Lq + L9, where �E, �g; Lq,g are the contributions the spin of the quarks, the gluons and their orbital angular moments respectively. The data all the experiments give what only about 1/3 the nucleon spin carry the quarks and antiquarks (�E = 0, 35 from COMPASS, �E = 0, 33 from HERMES) and l�gl :::; 0, 3 [1-3] . The orbital angular moments Lq, L9 can to be accessible through the measurements the generalized parton distributions in the exclusive pro cesses of the deep virtual Compton scattering and meson production [2] . New information on the contributions of the quarks and the antiquarks can to obtain from the experiments DIS with charged current [4-7] v(v) + N -+ z-(l+) + X, z(l+) + N � v(v) + X. Abstract:Semi-inclusive hadron production in longitudinally polarized deep-inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering is a powerful tool for resolving the quark flavor decomposition of the proton's spin structure. We present the full next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to the coefficient functions of polarized semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS) in analytical form, enabling the use of SIDIS measurements in precision studies of the proton spin structure. The numerical impact of these corrections is illustrated by a comparison with data of polarized single-inclusive hadron spectra from the DESY HERMES and CERN COMPASS experiments.

Abstract:The nucleon structure functions probed in deep-inelastic scattering at large virtualities form an important tool to test Quantum Chromdynamics (QCD) through precision measurements of the strong coupling constant $\alpha_s(M_Z^2)$ and the different parton distribution functions. The exact knowledge of these quantities is also of importance for all precision measurements at hadron colliders. During the last two decades very significant progress has been made in performing precision calculations. We review the theoretical status reached for both unpolarized and polarized lepton-hadron scattering based on perturbative QCD.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate deep inelastic and elastic scattering on a polarized spin-112 hadron using gauge/string duality. This spin-12 hadron corresponds to a supergravity mode of the dilatino. The polarized deep inelastic structure functions are computed in the supergravity approximation at large t' Hooft coupling lambda and finite x with lambda(-1/2)< x < 1. Furthermore, we discuss the moments of all structure functions, and propose an interesting sum rule 01dxg(2)(x,q(2))=0 for the g(2) structure function which is known as the Burkhardt-Cottingham sum rule in QCD. In the end, the elastic scattering is studied and elastic form factors of the spin-12 hadron are calculated within the same framework.

Abstract:Using the formalism obtained from collinear expansion, we calculate the differential cross section and azimuthal asymmetries in the semi-inclusive deeply inelastic lepton-nucleon (nucleus) scattering process e(-) + N(A) -> e(-) + q + X with both polarized beam and polarized target up to twist-3. We derive the azimuthal asymmetries in terms of twist-3 parton correlation functions. We simplify the results by using the QCD equation of motion that leads to a set of relationships between different twist-3 functions. We further study the nuclear dependence of azimuthal asymmetries and show that they have similar suppression factors as those in the unpolarized reactions.

Rank-Ordering Statistics of Extreme Events: Application to the Distribution of Large Earthquakes

Abstract:Rank-ordering statistics provides a perspective on the rare, largest elements of a population, whereas the statistics of cumulative distributions are dominated by the more numerous small events. The exponent of a power law distribution can be determined with good accuracy by rank-ordering statistics from the observation of only a few tens of the largest events. Using analytical results and synthetic tests, we quantify the systematic and the random errors. We also study the case of a distribution defined by two branches, each having a power law distribution, one defined for the largest events and the other for smaller events, with application to the World-Wide (Harvard) and Southern California earthquake catalogs. In the case of the Harvard moment catalog, we make more precise earlier claims of the existence of a transition of the earthquake magnitude distribution between small and large earthquakes; the $b$-values are $b_2 = 2.3 \pm 0.3$ for large shallow earthquakes and $b_1 = 1.00 \pm 0.02$ for smaller shallow earthquakes. However, the cross-over magnitude between the two distributions is ill-defined. The data available at present do not provide a strong constraint on the cross-over which has a $50\%$ probability of being between magnitudes $7.1$ and $7.6$ for shallow earthquakes; this interval may be too conservatively estimated. Thus, any influence of a universal geometry of rupture on the distribution of earthquakes world-wide is ill-defined at best. We caution that there is no direct evidence to confirm the hypothesis that the large-moment branch is indeed a power law. In fact, a gamma distribution fits the entire suite of earthquake moments from the smallest to the largest satisfactorily. Abstract:The spectra of dileptons radiated from the fireballs formed in high-energy heavy-ion collisions have been successfully used to investigate key properties of hot and dense QCD matter. In this paper we study polarization observables which have thus far received little attention. Microscopic calculations of in-medium electromagnetic spectral functions have thus far mostly focused on integrated yields which are proportional to the sum of the longitudinal and transverse components of the virtual photon's selfenergy. Photon polarization results from the difference of these components, which in general does not vanish for lepton pairs at finite three-momentum relative to the heat bath (and is maximal for fully transverse real photons). Using a model that successfully describes dilepton spectra in heavy-ion collisions, with hadronic emission via medium-modified vector mesons and quark-antiquark annihilation constrained by lattice QCD, we compute polarization observables in different dilepton mass bins and confront them with data of the HADES and NA60 experiments.

Abstract:We compare the relative importance of different mechanisms for polarized J/ψ production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering processes at large Q2 . The transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization framework and nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics are used to study the leading contributions from light quark fragmentation to polarized J/ψ , and compared to direct production via photon-gluon fusion, which can proceed through color-singlet as well as color-octet mechanisms. Abstract:Studies of the Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) have provided fundamental information of the nucleon structure for decades. The electron-ion collider (EIC) will be the first collider capable of DIS study with both polarized lepton and polarized hadron beams, providing the possibility of accessing new electroweak structure functions of the nucleon. In this work, we completed the DIS cross section derivations for both longitudinally and transversely polarized leptons and hadrons, with no approximations made, and with all three contributions $\gamma \gamma, \gamma Z, ZZ$ included. These results were derived using primarily tensor algebra and Feynman calculus, starting from previously established leptonic and hadronic tensors and carry out their contraction. Our results are presented in terms of both spin-averaged and spin-dependent cross sections, allowing direct comparison with experimentally measured cross sections and their asymmetries. We include also in our discussion comparisons of different conventions that exist in the literature.

Abstract:We present a method for extraction of detailed information on polarized quark densities from semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering l+N -> l+h+X, in both LO and NLO QCD without any assumptions about fragmentation functions and polarized sea densities. The only symmetries utilised are charge conjugation and isotopic spin invariance of strong interactions.

Spin-dependent Parton Distributions from Polarized Structure Function Data

Abstract:In the past year, polarized deep inelastic scattering experiments at CERN and SLAC have obtained structure function measurements off proton, neutron and deuteron targets at a level of precision never before achieved. The measurements can be used to test the Bjorken and Ellis-Jaffe sum rules, and also to obtain information on the parton distributions in polarized nucleons. We perform a global leading-order QCD fit to the proton deep inelastic data in order to extract the spin-dependent parton distributions. By using parametric forms which are consistent with theoretical expectations at large and small $x$, we find that the quark distributions are now rather well constrained. We assume that there is no significant intrinsic polarization of the strange quark sea. The data are then consistent with a modest amount of the proton's spin carried by the gluon, although the shape of the gluon distribution is not well constrained, and several qualitatively different shapes are suggested. The spin-dependent distributions we obtain can be used as input to phenomenological studies for future polarized hadron-hadron and lepton-hadron colliders.

Perturbative and nonperturbative QCD corrections in polarized nucleon structure functions and spin asymmetries of nucleons

Abstract:We have studied the deep inelastic scattering of polarized charged leptons from polarized nucleon targets and evaluated the polarized structure functions $g_{1,2}(x,Q^2)$ for protons and neutrons as well as the nucleon asymmetries $A_{1p}(x,Q^2)$ and $A_{2p}(x,Q^2)$ for protons. The higher order perturbative corrections up to the next-to-next-to-the-leading order (NNLO) using the parameterization of LSS05 polarized parton distribution functions in the 3-flavor MSbar scheme and the nonperturbative corrections viz. the twist-3 corrections and target mass corrections (TMC) have been included in the calculations. The numerical results for the polarized nucleon structure functions and the proton asymmetries are presented and compared with the experimental results. The sum rule integrals of the nucleon structure functions corresponding to the Ellis-Jaffe, Bjorken, Gottfried and Burkhardt-Cottingham sum rules have been evaluated numerically and are compared with the experimental results.
