Abstract:Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) is the largest and most crowded city in Vietnam. Therefore, the development of urban infrastructure plays a crucial in the city. The first metro line in HCMC consists of two sections: underground and elevated railroad. To construct the underground section, a deep excavation retained by diaphragm wall (D-wall) with 1.5 m in thickness was used. This paper presents the case study of an excavation of first metro line performed in HCMC, in which the deformation of ground surface and D-wall is focused on. The effects of water table level changes on the deformation are considered in this study. The site condition and construction characteristic are presented and provided for the numerical analysis. Deformation behavior of deep excavation retained by D-wall is investigated using finite element analysis in Plaxis. The numerical results are in good agreement with field data of ground surface settlement and lateral displacement of D-wall. With the consideration of the drawdown of water table level in dry season, the ground settlement increases while the lateral displacement of D-wall significantly decreases. The drawdown of water table level is a significant factor, which affect the deformation behavior of deep excavation, such as ground settlement and lateral displacement of D-wall. Therefore, it is recommended that the changes of water table level along with the season in the year should be considered in the design stage of deep excavation in Ho Chi Minh City.
