Abstract:Flowing granular materials segregate due to differences in particle size (driven by percolation) and density (driven by buoyancy). Modelling the segregation of mixtures of large/heavy particles and small/light particles is challenging due to the opposing effects of the two segregation mechanisms. Using discrete element method (DEM) simulations of combined size and density segregation we show that the segregation velocity is well described by a model that depends linearly on the local shear rate and quadratically on the species concentration. Concentration profiles predicted by incorporating this segregation velocity model into a continuum advection-diffusion-segregation transport model match DEM simulation results well for a wide range of particle size and density ratios. Most surprisingly, the DEM simulations and the segregation velocity model both show that the segregation direction for a range of size and density ratios depends on the local species concentration. This leads to a methodology to determine the combination of particle size ratio, density ratio, and particle concentration for which a bidisperse mixture will not segregate.

Abstract:In dense flowing bidisperse particle mixtures varying in size or density alone, smaller particles sink (driven by percolation) and lighter particles rise (driven by buoyancy). But when the particle species differ from each other in both size and density, percolation and buoyancy can either enhance (large/light and small/heavy) or oppose (large/heavy and small/light) each other. In the latter case, a local equilibrium condition can exist in which the two segregation mechanisms balance and particles remain mixed: this allows the design of minimally-segregating mixtures by specifying particle size ratio, density ratio, and mixture concentration. Using experimentally validated DEM simulations, we show that mixtures specified by the methodology remain relatively well-mixed in the thin rapid surface flows characteristic of heaps and tumblers commonly used in industry. Furthermore, minimally-segregating particle mixtures prepared in a fully segregated state in a tumbler mix over time and eventually reach a state of nearly uniform species concentration.

Abstract:Particle segregation in dense flowing size-disperse granular mixtures is driven by gravity and shear, but predicting the associated segregation force due to both effects has remained an unresolved challenge. Here, a model of the combined gravity- and kinematics-induced segregation force on a single intruder particle is integrated with a model of the concentration dependence of the gravity-induced segregation force. The result is a general model of the net particle segregation force in flowing size-bidisperse granular mixtures. Using discrete element method simulations for comparison, the model correctly predicts the segregation force for a variety of mixture concentrations and flow conditions in both idealized and natural shear flows.

Abstract:We present a continuum approach to model segregation of size-bidisperse granular materials in unsteady bounded heap flow as a prototype for modeling segregation in other time varying flows. In experiments, a periodically modulated feed rate produces stratified segregation like that which occurs due to intermittent avalanching, except with greater layer-uniformity and higher average feed rates. Using an advection-diffusion-segregation equation and characterizing transient changes in deposition and erosion after a feed rate change, we model stratification for varying feed rates and periods. Feed rate modulation in heap flows can create well-segregated layers, which effectively mix the deposited material normal to the free surface at lengths greater than the combined layer-thickness. This mitigates the strong streamwise segregation that would otherwise occur at larger particle-size ratios and equivalent steady feed rates and can significantly reduce concentration variation during hopper discharge. Coupling segregation, deposition and erosion is challenging but has many potential applications.

Abstract:In granular flows, particles can mix or segregate owing to their difference in size/density. This behaviour is commonly understood as a size- or density-driven segregating flux at the macro scale and has been studied before in systems of shear cell and chute. This work aims to model the segregation in practical systems with complex geometries and flow modes, by coupling the fundamental flow rheology and the convection-diffusion-segregation transport equation. The model is validated against experimental measurements and discrete element simulations in various flow scenarios, shown able to capture the notable characteristics of particle segregation reported, such as the core of small particles in a rotating drum. The predictions can overall match the benchmark tests although the quantitative accuracy still varies with cases, indicating the need for further study. The proposed approach, not limited by operational or geometrical conditions, provides a useful tool for the design and control of mixing processes.
Granular segregation across flow geometries: a closure model for the particle segregation velocity

Abstract:Predicting particle segregation has remained challenging due to the lack of a general model for the segregation velocity that is applicable across a range of granular flow geometries. Here, a segregation velocity model for dense granular flows is developed by exploiting momentum balance and recent advances in particle-scale modelling of the segregation driving and drag forces over a wide range of particle concentrations, size and density ratios, and flow conditions. This model is shown to correctly predict particle segregation velocity in a diverse set of idealized and natural granular flow geometries simulated using the discrete element method. When incorporated in the well-established advection-diffusion-segregation formulation, the model has the potential to accurately capture segregation phenomena in many relevant industrial application and geophysical settings.

Abstract:Many products in the chemical and agricultural industries are pelletized in the form of rod‐like particles that often have different aspect ratios. However, the flow, mixing, and segregation of non‐spherical particles such as rod‐like particles are poorly understood. Here, we use the discrete element method (DEM) utilizing super‐ellipsoid particles to simulate the flow and segregation of rod‐like particles differing in length but with the same diameter in a quasi‐2D one‐sided bounded heap. The DEM simulations accurately reproduce the segregation of size bidisperse rod‐like particles in a bounded heap based on comparison with experiments. Rod‐like particles orient themselves along the direction of flow, although bounding walls influence the orientation of the smaller aspect ratio particles. The flow kinematics and segregation of bidisperse rods having identical diameters but different lengths are similar to spherical particles. The segregation velocity of one rod species relative to the mean velocity depends linearly on the concentration of the other species, the shear rate, and a parameter based on the relative lengths of the rods. A continuum model developed for spherical particles that includes advection, diffusion, and segregation effects accurately predicts the segregation of rods in the flowing layer for a range of physical control parameters and particle species concentrations. © 2017 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 64: 1550–1563, 2018
Continuum modeling of size-segregation and flow in dense, bidisperse granular media: Accounting for segregation driven by both pressure gradients and shear-strain-rate gradients

Abstract:Dense mixtures of particles of varying size tend to segregate based on size during flow. Granular size-segregation plays an important role in many industrial and geophysical processes, but the development of coupled, continuum models capable of predicting the evolution of segregation dynamics and flow fields in dense granular media across different geometries has remained a longstanding challenge. One reason is because size-segregation stems from two driving forces: (1) pressure gradients and (2) shear-strain-rate gradients. Another reason is due to the challenge of integrating segregation models with rheological constitutive equations for dense granular flow. In this paper, we build upon our prior work, which combined a model for shear-strain-rate-gradient-driven segregation with a nonlocal continuum model for dense granular flow rheology, and append a model for pressure-gradient-driven segregation. We perform discrete element method (DEM) simulations of dense flow of bidisperse granular systems in two flow geometries, in which both segregation driving forces are present: namely, inclined plane flow and planar shear flow with gravity. Steady-state DEM data from inclined plane flow is used to determine the dimensionless material parameters in the pressure-gradient-driven segregation model for both spheres and disks. Then, predictions of the coupled, continuum model accounting for both driving forces are tested against DEM simulation results across different cases of both inclined plane flow and planar shear flow with gravity, while varying parameters such as the size of the flow geometry, the driving conditions of flow, and the initial conditions. Overall, we find that it is crucial to account for both driving forces to capture segregation dynamics in dense, bidisperse granular media across both flow geometries with a single set of parameters.

Abstract:Dense granular systems that consist of particles of disparate sizes segregate based on size during flow, resulting in complex, coupled segregation and flow patterns. The ability to predict how granular mixtures segregate is important in the design of industrial processes and the understanding of geophysical phenomena. The two primary drivers of size-segregation are pressure gradients and shear-strain-rate gradients. In this work, we isolate size-segregation driven by shear-strain-rate gradients by studying two dense granular flow geometries with constant pressure fields: gravity-driven flow down a long vertical chute with rough parallel walls and annular shear flow with rough inner and outer walls. We perform discrete element method (DEM) simulations of dense flow of bidisperse granular systems in both flow geometries, while varying system parameters, such as the flow rate, flow configuration size, fraction of large/small grains, and grain-size ratio, and use DEM data to inform continuum constitutive equations for the relative flux of large and small particles. When the resulting continuum model for the dynamics of size-segregation is coupled with the nonlocal granular fluidity model (a nonlocal continuum model for dense granular flow rheology), we show that both flow fields and segregation dynamics may be simultaneously captured using this coupled, continuum system of equations.

Abstract:We study the flow of equal-volume binary granular mixtures of spheres and dumbbells with different aspect ratios down a rough inclined plane, using the discrete element method. We consider two types of mixtures -- in the first type the particles of the two species have equal volume but different aspect ratios (EV) and in the second type they have variable volumes and aspect ratios (VV). We also use mixtures of spheres of two different sizes (SS) with the same volume ratios as in the mixtures of the second type, as the base case. Based on the study of Guillard, Forterre and Pouliquen [\textit{J. Fluid Mech.} \textbf{807}, R1--R11 (2016)], the inclination angle of the base for each mixture is adjusted and maintained at a high value to yield the same pressure and shear stress gradients for all mixtures and a high effective friction ($\mu$) for each. This ensures that the segregation force and resulting extent of segregation depend only the size and shape of the particles. The species with larger effective size, computed in terms of the geometric mean diameter, floats up in all cases and the dynamics of the segregation process for all the mixtures are reported. The concentration profiles of the species at steady state agree well with the predictions of a continuum theory. The $\mu-I$ and $\phi-I$ scaling relations, where $I$ is the inertial number and $\phi$ is the solid volume fraction, extended to the case of mixtures, are shown to describe the rheology for all the cases.

Abstract:Segregation is common in granular flows consisting of mixtures of particles differing in size or density. In gravity-driven flows, both gradients in total pressure (induced by gravity) and gradients in velocity fluctuation fields (often associated with shear rate gradients) work together to govern the evolution of segregation. Since the local shear rate and velocity fluctuations are dependent on the local concentration of the components, understanding the co-evolution of segregation and flow is critical for understanding and predicting flows where there can be a variety of particle sizes and densities, such as in nature and industry. Kinetic theory has proven to be a robust framework for predicting this simultaneous evolution but has a limit in its applicability to dense systems where collisions are highly correlated. In this paper, we introduce a model that captures the coevolution of these evolving dynamics for high density gravity driven granular mixtures. For the segregation dynamics we use a recently developed mixture theory (Fan & Hill 2011, New J. Phys; Hill & Tan 2014, J. Fluid Mech.) which captures the combined effects of gravity and fluctuation fields on segregation evolution in high density granular flows. For the mixture flow dynamics, we use a recently proposed viscous-elastic-plastic constitutive model, which can describe the multi-state behaviors of granular materials, i.e. the granular solid, granular liquid and granular gas mechanical states (Fei et al. 2016, Powder Technol.). The platform we use for implementing this model is a modified Material Point Method (MPM), and we use discrete element method simulations of gravity-driven flow in an inclined channel to demonstrate that this new MPM model can predict the final segregation distribution as well as flow velocity profile well. We then discuss ongoing work where we are using this platform to test the effectiveness of particular segregation models under different boundary conditions.
Asymmetric concentration dependence of segregation fluxes in granular flows

Abstract:We characterize the local concentration dependence of segregation velocity and segregation flux in both size and density bidisperse gravity-driven free-surface granular flows as a function of the particle size ratio and density ratio, respectively, using discrete element method (DEM) simulations. For a range of particle size ratios and inlet volume flow rates in size-bidisperse flows, the maximum segregation flux occurs at a small particle concentration less than 0.5, which decreases with increasing particle size ratio. The segregation flux increases up to a size ratio of 2.4 but plateaus from there to a size ratio of 3. In density bidisperse flows, the segregation flux is greatest at a heavy particle concentration less than 0.5 which decreases with increasing particle density ratio. The segregation flux increases with increasing density ratio for the extent of density ratios studied, up to 10. We further demonstrate that the simulation results for size driven segregation are in accord with the predictions of the kinetic sieving segregation model of Savage and Lun.

Abstract:We study segregation and stratification of mixtures of grains differing in size, shape and material properties poured in two-dimensional silos using a microscopic lattice model for surface flows of grains. The model incorporates the dissipation of energy in collisions between rolling and static grains and an energy barrier describing the geometrical asperities of the grains. We study the phase diagram of the different morphologies predicted by the model as a function of the two parameters. We find regions of segregation and stratification, in agreement with experimental finding, as well as a region of total mixing.

Abstract:Deposition of granular materials into a container is a general industrial packing process. In this study, the deposition behaviour of dilute granular mixtures consisting of two types of particles that were of the same particle size but different particle densities in the presence of air was numerically analyzed using a coupled discrete element method (DEM) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Bilayer granular mixtures with light particles at bottom and heavy particles at top were first simulated. It was found that the presence of air significantly affected the flow behaviour of the bilayer mixtures. For the system with a relatively low initial void fraction, the air entrapped inside the container escaped through the dilated zones induced due to the friction between the powder bed and wall surfaces. The escaping air streams entrained light particles that were originally located at the bottom of the granular system. Consequently, these light particles were migrated to the top of the granular bed at the end of deposition process. More light particles were migrated when the deposition distance was increased. For the system with a high initial void fraction, some light particles penetrated into the top layer of heavy particles and created a mixing zone. Deposition of random mixtures with different initial void fractions was also investigated and the influence of initial void fraction on the segregation behaviour was explored as well. It was found that the increase of void fraction promoted segregation during the deposition in air. It was demonstrated that, for granular mixtures consisting of particles of different air sensitivities, the presence of air had a significant impact on the mixing and segregation behaviour during the deposition.
Transient segregation of different density granular mixtures

Abstract:We study time-dependent density segregation of granular mixtures flowing over an inclined plane. Discrete Element Method (DEM) simulations in a periodic box are performed for granular mixtures of same size and different density particles flowing under the influence of gravity. In addition, a continuum model is developed to solve the momentum balance equations along with species transport equation by accounting for the inter-coupling of segregation and rheology. The particle force-based density segregation theory has been used along with the $\mu-I$ rheology to predict evolution of flow properties with time for binary and multicomponent mixtures. The effect of particle arrangements on the transient evolution of flow properties for three different initial configurations is investigated using both continuum and DEM simulations. Continuum predictions for various flow properties of interest such as species concentration, velocity, pressure, and shear stress at different time instants are compared with DEM simulations. The results from the discrete and continuum models are found to be in good agreement with each other for well-mixed and heavy-near-base initial configurations. However, the continuum model is unable to predict the flow evolution for the light-near-base initial configuration. DEM simulations reveal the presence of an instability driven, quick segregation for this configuration which is not predicted by the one dimensional model and requires generalization to three dimensions.

Abstract:Segregation induced by size, shape, or density difference of the granular material is inevitable in both natural and industrial processes; unfortunately, the underlying mechanism is still not fully understood. In view of the ubiquitous continuous particle size distributions, this study builds on the considerable knowledge gained so far from binary-size mixtures and extends it to a ternary-size mixture to understand the impact of the presence of a third particle size in the three-dimensional rotating drum operating in the rolling flow regime. The discrete element method is employed. The evolution of segregation, the active-passive interface, and the dynamical response of the particle-scale characteristics of the different particle types in the two regions are investigated. The results reveal that the medium particles are spatially sandwiched in between the large and small particles in both the radial and axial directions and therefore exhibit behaviors intermediate to the other two particle types. Compared to the binary-size mixture, the presence of the medium particles leads to (i) higher purity of small particles in the innermost of the radial core, causing a decrease of the translational velocity of small particles; (ii) decrease and increase of the collision forces exerted on, respectively, the large and small particles in both regions; and (iii) increase in the relative ratio of the active-passive exchange rates of small to large particles. The results obtained in the current study therefore provide valuable insights regarding the size-segregation dynamics of granular mixtures with constituents of different sizes.
A unified description of gravity- and kinematics-induced segregation forces in dense granular flows

Abstract:Particle segregation is common in natural and industrial processes involving flowing granular materials. Complex, and seemingly contradictory, segregation phenomena have been observed for different boundary conditions and forcing. Using discrete element method simulations, we show that segregation of a single particle intruder can be described in a unified manner across different flow configurations. A scaling relation for the net segregation force is obtained by measuring forces on an intruder particle in controlled-velocity flows where gravity and flow kinematics are varied independently. The scaling law consists of two additive terms: a buoyancy-like gravity-induced pressure gradient term and a shear rate gradient term, both of which depend on the particle size ratio. The shear rate gradient term reflects a kinematics-driven mechanism whereby larger (smaller) intruders are pushed toward higher (lower) shear rate regions. The scaling is validated, without refitting, in wall-driven flows, inclined wall-driven flows, vertical silo flows, and free surface flows down inclines. Comparing the segregation force to the intruder weight results in predictions of the segregation direction that match experimental and computational results for various flow configurations.

Competing Flow of Dissimilar Granular Materials in Air

Abstract:The flow behaviour of granular systems of dissimilar particles is investigated numerically. Binary mixtures of particles of different densities are considered and different initial configurations (i.e., bi-layered, bi-column and random mixture) are modelled. The competition between the flow of the dissimilar particles in a vertical tube is analysed. In addition, the influence of air on the competing flow behaviour is addressed by comparing the flow behaviour in air and in a vacuum. It is found that the competing flow behaviour depends on the dissimilarity of the constituent particles, such as air sensitivity and the initial configuration. Furthermore, it is illustrated that the presence of air has a significant impact on the flow behaviour, which can induce dramatic rearrangements of the dissimilar particles for the stratified systems and segregation of randomly mixed systems.
Measuring segregation characteristics of industrially relevant granular mixtures: Part I -- A continuum model approach

Abstract:We present a method to estimate the segregation parameter, $S,$ a key input in a continuum transport model of particulate flows. $S$ is determined by minimizing the difference between measured and model-predicted concentration profiles. To validate the approach, we conduct discrete element method simulations of size-bidisperse mixtures in quasi-2D bounded heap flow; the resulting data show that $S$ calculated from concentration profiles is consistent with the directly measured value. The method's accuracy depends critically on the velocity profile during filling, but only weakly on the diffusion coefficient. When the velocity profile is nominally spanwise invariant, the error between estimated and measured $S$ is $10\%$. This method is intended for practical application (described in Part II), so we restrict characterization of the velocity profile to that which can be readily determined experimentally, and explore the sensitivity of concentration profiles to variation of the gap between the sidewalls of the heap.
