Abstract:Through theoretical frameworks and applications of cognitive ergonomics, this article illustrates, with practical examples, the role of designing restaurants from the perspective of cognitive ergonomics concerning the process of perception and sensory stimuli. The goal is intended to promote well-being and differentiation in a saturated and competitive market by optimizing the interaction between patrons and their environments with a focus on perceived comfort and quality. This paper examines the application of selected universal principles of design and environmental psychology that affect how people might respond to spatial qualities and designs in the dining experience. Central to the integration of these concepts is designing for well-being which increases patron satisfaction and supports positive mental and emotional effects.
Focus Within or On Others: The Impact of Reviewers' Attentional Focus on Review Helpfulness

Abstract:When reviewers write online reviews, they differ in the focus of their attention: some focus on their own experiences, whereas some direct their attention to others—prospective consumers who may read the reviews in the future. This paper explores how, why, and when reviewers’ attentional focus can influence the helpfulness evaluation of reviews beyond the impact of substantive review content. Drawing on the attentional focus and persuasion literatures, we develop a theoretical model proposing that reviewers’ attentional focus may influence consumers’ perception of review helpfulness through opposing processes, and that its overall effect is contingent on the review’s two-sidedness. Results of one archival analysis and five controlled experiments provide consistent support for our hypotheses. This work challenges the predominant view of the positive impact of other-focus (vs. self-focus), explores the interpersonal impact of a reviewer’s attentional focus on prospective consumers who are total strangers, and reveals an important, context-specific boundary condition.

Understanding human behavior and perception allows designers to develop interfaces that connect with people on a deeper level. The term "Psychology of Design" emphasizes the necessity of studying how human perception effects the design and function of things. It recognizes that design is more than just aesthetics; it is also about how consumers perceive and interact with the product. Integrating psychology into design philosophy represents a paradigm change, acknowledging that good design goes beyond addressing fundamental requirements and involves developing emotional connections. Abstract:Anaphora refers to a phenomenon in which a linguistic element obtains its meaning via a previously existing unit or meaning. The study of anaphoric processing has always been one of the foci in cognitive science. The relevant ERP studies demonstrate that the understanding of anaphoric expression complies more with the parallel model of language processing, whose different stages are all affected and restricted by such factors as semantics, pragmatics, the frequency of antecedent, and the different forms of anaphora. Therefore, the future research should go deep into some issues like the Nref Effect, the null anaphor, the interaction of various factors in anaphoric processing, and the anaphora in Chinese.

Abstract:Design intelligence is an important branch of artificial intelligence (AI), focusing on the intelligent models and algorithms in creativity and design. In the context of AI 2.0, studies on design intelligence have developed rapidly. We summarize mainly the current emerging framework of design intelligence and review the state-of-the-art techniques of related topics, including user needs analysis, ideation, content generation, and design evaluation. Specifically, the models and methods of intelligence-generated content are reviewed in detail. Finally, we discuss some open problems and challenges for future research in design intelligence.

Abstract:To date, related cognitive load studies and theories have been developed more than 70 years. As a result, listing and comparing relative theories will help form a better understanding. Cognition is “the mental action or process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through thought, experience, and the senses”, which has the corresponding psychological mechanism [1]. It involves many features of psychological processes such as attention, working memory, problem solving and decision making. Early psychologists took considerable time to formalize their theories regarding cognitive resources. In psychology, cognition is usually used within an information processing view of an individual’s psychological functions (Eysenck and Groome, 2015). In social cognition, the term is also used to explain attitudes, attribution, attention, and decision making. Attention is the first step of information processing in human brain, as a regulation mechanism of psychological activities, which has become a vital area of focus.

Abstract:While many studies have investigated the impact of central and peripheral cues on the perceived helpfulness of a single online consumer review, few studies have examined how central or peripheral cues may affect consumers' search for reviews to read from massive reviews and how this knowledge can be explored in the interface design of online review systems. By combining the heuristic-systematic model with text analysis techniques, we propose three review navigation aids that incorporate extracted tags of peripheral cues, elaborateness cues (central cues), and product and service attributes (central cues). The effects of the three navigation aids against a control condition on review browsing behaviors, perceptions, and purchase intentions were examined through a laboratory experiment on a simulated e-commerce website with 160 participants. The results showed that the participants were more satisfied with the peripheral-cue-based aid for both types of products. Participants using the peripheral-cue-based aid made the most use of its unique tags, and spent a larger proportion of time reading reviews under these unique tags, as compared to those using central-cue-based aids. Furthermore, the impact of user experience with review navigation aids on purchase intentions was significant only for experience products and not for search products. These findings help designers of review systems understand the selective processing behaviors of online reviews and improve their design by utilizing peripheral cues as navigation aids.

Abstract:This paper discusses how designers formulate ideas through unstructured approaches in furniture design. The problem arose from a logical analysis of the strategies, methods, and hermeneutics in designing within the state-of-the-art interpretation principle. The goal is to understand how designers interpret the visual concept of subjectivity. In the designers’ cognitive ergonomics, verbal protocol analysis approaches methodologically analyzed. The 15-minute memorizing-based videotapes observe the designer reflection using several form properties, namely a characteristic of the uncertain objects has practiced. The findings showed the embodiment of metaphorical forms for designers to visualize unstructured visual forms as significant tangible forms. Abstract:Over the last decades, the Internet and mobile technology have consolidated the digital as a public sphere of life. Designers are asked to create engaging digital experiences. However, in some cases engagement is seen as a psychological state, while in others it emphasizes a participative vein. In this paper, I review and discuss both and propose a new definition to clarify the concept engagement with computers. Thus, engagement is a quality of an active connection between a user and a computing product, either a website or a mobile phone app. Studying it requires understanding a set of aspects like the user's affect, motivation and attention, as well as the product's design, content and composition. Finally, I propose explaining these concepts aligned with engagement and integrate them into a preliminary model to measure the manifestations.

Abstract:The specific theories addressed in this book are concerned with fuzzy rule-based systems and fuzzy weighted averages, in which the fuzzy membership functions (MF) of the input, output and internal variables take interval values, reflecting imprecision in one¿s knowledge of the MF itself. This imprecision is routinely encountered in dealing with human perceptions of the meanings of descriptive words (e.g., small, long, fast, etc.) associated with such variables,where different individuals typically have different notions regarding the disposition of the degrees of membership in a particular fuzzy set. The familiar type-1 fuzzy set fails to capture this ambiguity in membership values, thus motivating the extensions described in this book.

Rethinking Cognition: Morphological Info-Computation and the Embodied Paradigm in Life and Artificial Intelligence

Abstract:This study aims to place Lorenzo Magnanis Eco-Cognitive Computationalism within the broader context of current work on information, computation, and cognition. Traditionally, cognition was believed to be exclusive to humans and a result of brain activity. However, recent studies reveal it as a fundamental characteristic of all life forms, ranging from single cells to complex multicellular organisms and their networks. Yet, the literature and general understanding of cognition still largely remain human-brain-focused, leading to conceptual gaps and incoherency. This paper presents a variety of computational (information processing) approaches, including an info-computational approach to cognition, where natural structures represent information and dynamical processes on natural structures are regarded as computation, relative to an observing cognizing agent. We model cognition as a web of concurrent morphological computations, driven by processes of self-assembly, self-organisation, and autopoiesis across physical, chemical, and biological domains. We examine recent findings linking morphological computation, morphogenesis, agency, basal cognition, extended evolutionary synthesis, and active inference. We establish a connection to Magnanis Eco-Cognitive Computationalism and the idea of computational domestication of ignorant entities. Novel theoretical and applied insights question the boundaries of conventional computational models of cognition. The traditional models prioritize symbolic processing and often neglect the inherent constraints and potentialities in the physical embodiment of agents on different levels of organization. Gaining a better info-computational grasp of cognitive embodiment is crucial for the advancement of fields such as biology, evolutionary studies, artificial intelligence, robotics, medicine, and more.

Abstract:Inspired by the literature on processing fluency and the practical question of how to choose fonts for website design, we investigated the impact of customer reviews on consumer evaluation under an easy-to-read (vs. difficult-to-read) review font. We found that the feeling of ease in reading led consumers to judge the reviewers as more credible, thus increasing the impact of the reviews. Moreover, the effect of font diminished when consumers elaborated information more thoroughly (when high in need for cognition, or in an accountable situation), and thus did not use simple heuristics (reading ease) to judge the credibility of the review.
Comprehension and Assessment of Product Reviews: A Review-Product Congruity Proposition.

Abstract:This work anchors on the theories of cognitive fit and schema congruity to advance a review-product congruity proposition. The proposition states that the effects of product review content (either attribute or experience based) on the product review comprehension (reflected by perceived cognitive effort and review comprehension time) and assessment (manifested by perceived review helpfulness) of a consumer are contingent on the assessed product type (either search or experience product). The results of our first experiment support the proposition by revealing that the two matching conditions, (1) attribute-based reviews describing a search product and (2) experience-based reviews describing an experience product, could lead consumers to perceive higher review helpfulness and lower cognitive effort (subjective measure) to comprehend the reviews. However, the subjective evaluation of cognitive effort is not reinforced by the resulting review comprehension time (an objective assessment of comprehension effort), which suggests that consumers spend significantly more time processing reviews in the presence of the two matching conditions. A second experiment was conducted using the think-aloud method to gain further insights into the effects. We found that under the review-product matching conditions, consumers engage in deeper-level comprehension and expend more time in comprehension without realizing it, compared to consumers under the mismatching conditions. This research extends our current understanding of how review content and product reviews jointly influence the comprehension and assessment behavior of the consumer, and provides guidelines on the identification and the presentation of reviews to facilitate the judgment and decision making of potential consumers.

Abstract:Talking about design, most discussions circulate around physical objects or products, around their invention, development, production and marketing. While most modern design approaches do also cover questions pertaining to human interaction, e.g. within user- or human-centred design philosophies, a systematic and fundamental conception of the role and implications that human perception and emo-cognitive processing take with regard to designing physical goods is lacking. Under the umbrella term ‘Psychology of Design’, I will develop and elaborate on psychological dimensions that are highly relevant to the optimization and evaluation of design. I propagate a general psychological turn in design theory and practice in order to purposefully include not only the top-down processes triggered by context, framing, expectation, knowledge or habituation but also the psychological effects of Gestalt and Zeitgeist. Such psychological effects have the potential to determine whether the very same physical design will be aesthetically appreciated, desired, loved or rejected in the end. Psychology of design has a tremendous influence on the success and sustainability of design by triggering associations and displaying demand characteristics in a multimodal way. The paper is based on fundamental psychological theories and empirical evidences which are linked to applied examples from the world of art and design.
The effect of reviewer’s review volumes on online consumer reviews’ perceived usefulness: An event-related potential study

Abstract:What is the most useful online consumer review? Consumers face the challenge of identifying useful online consumer reviews, some of which might have been manipulated. Reviewer's review volumes is the past behavior of a reviewer. Reviews are used by many online shopping websites. While reviewer cues are receiving increasing attention, the effect of reviewer's review volumes on the perceived usefulness of online consumer review remains under-explored. This research explored the underlying neural mechanism of reviewer's review volumes on the perceived usefulness of online consumer reviews by applying the event-related potentials (ERPs) approach. Behaviorally, a higher perceived usefulness rate and reduced reaction time were observed for the high-review-volume condition compared to the low-review-volume condition, indicating that the high-review-volume condition was more desirable to the participants. At the neural level, the high-review-volume condition elicited an attenuated N2 and an increased LPP compared with the low-review volume condition, suggesting a more positive evaluation of the high-review volume condition. These results showed the positive impact of the reviewer's review volumes on the perceived usefulness of online consumer reviews and its potential neural substrates.

Comprehension of online consumer-generated product review: a construal level perspective.

Abstract:This study explores how consumers, who differ in their psychological distance toward the purchasing event (i.e., temporal distance) or toward product review writers (i.e., social distance), comprehend concrete or abstract reviews. Two experiments were conducted. The first experiment examined how a consumer's perception of temporal distance, near future or distant future, would affect his/her comprehension of product reviews of varying abstractness. Results reveal that consumers of near temporal distance perceive concrete reviews to be more helpful. These consumers express a higher recall ability compared to counterparts of distant temporal distance. However, consumers of near temporal distance perceive abstract reviews to be less helpful and express a lower recall ability compared to those of distant temporal distance. The second experiment investigated how social distance, i.e., whether the review is written by someone who is perceived to be socially close to the reader would influence his/her comprehension of product reviews of varying abstractness. Results indicate that, with the provision of concrete reviews, consumers perceive non-significant difference of the review helpfulness under near and distant social distance and exhibit comparable recall ability. With the provision of abstract reviews, however, consumers of a near social distance recognize the reviews as helpful and recall the product better than did those of a distant social distance. This study presents a theoretically-driven and empirically- validated proposition to improve the presentation of product reviews to aid consumer review comprehension. © (2011) by the AIS/ICIS Administrative Office All rights reserved.

Abstract:Abstract While the majority of studies exploring online customer reviews in the light of intercultural comparisons draw on the theoretical framework of Hofstede’s cultural dimensions, which faced justifiable criticism, we make use of Socio-Cognitive Systems Theory to illustrate how consumers from different cultures are cognitively processing information. By employing this alternative theory, it is shown that the (heretofore established) Elaboration Likelihood Model for examining online customer reviews does not serve as an applicable framework in intercultural contexts. Reviewing extant literature, we uncover incidents questioning the generalizability of previous studies on review credibility conducted among East Asians. Building upon a research model established at a national level, we interviewed Western (German; n=552) and East Asian (Chinese; n=585) consumers to analyze the intercultural appropriateness of the model. The results empirically validate the assumptions of the Socio-Cognitive Systems Theory, and thus, finds Chinese to perceive review credibility holistically, whereas Germans tend to categorize its antecedents for evaluating them separately.

Abstract:As the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to advance, there is increased interest in how best to combine AI-based agents with humans to achieve mission effectiveness. Three perspectives have emerged. The first stems from more conventional human factors traditions and views these entities as highly capable tools that humans can use to accomplish increasingly sophisticated tasks. The second "camp" believes that as the sophistication of these entities increases, it becomes increasingly appropriate to talk about them as "teammates" and use the research on human teams as a foundation for further exploration. The third perspective is emerging and finds both the "tools" and "teammate" metaphors flawed and limiting. This perspective emphasizes "joint activity," "joint cognitive activity," or something similar. In this article, we briefly review these three perspectives.

Effect of construal level on the drivers of online-review-helpfulness

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to explore the effect of purchase context on the relative importance of the drivers of online review helpfulness and also to explore the psychological process behind it. This will help the review management team of online retailers to create a better review ranking system that considers purchase context. Based on the theory of helpful behavior, we propose that review-helpfulness is driven by review characteristics such as review diagnosticity and vicarious expression in the review, and reviewer characteristics such as reviewer-trustworthiness. Moreover, following construal level theory, we explain the relative importance of the review and reviewer characteristics. Using four experimental studies, we find that, at low construal, review characteristics have higher relative importance than high construal, while reviewer characteristics have lower relative importance. The current study contributes to the literature on online review-helpfulness and the application of construal level theory in consumer behavior. The study proposes a unique method of ranking the reviews based on consumers' purchase context and predicted psychological state while displaying them on the platforms. This is the first paper that explores the impact of construal level on review and reviewer characteristics on review-helpfulness.
